Beginners typically take 60 minute classes once per week at a recurring time. Young children typically take half hour classes and older children, adult musicians and those on a budget typically take 45 minute classes. The most common lesson length to start with is 60 minutes, as the teacher will need to tune your instrument and help you get set up. Some students choose to take lessons twice per week when a concert is coming up, to catch up from a vacation or if they just want to make faster progress.

In class, you will learn new techniques, receive guidance on how to achieve the best sound possible and learn songs that you like and that interest you. You are expected to take this guidance and practice it thoroughly at home until you feel comfortable with it, so that when you are in class next, the teacher can move on to a new concept or skill which builds upon the skill practiced at home. They will only move you forward once you can do the more basic technique.

About Antoinette
Finding an schooled violinist and finding a good violin teacher are two very different things. When I see other teacher's profiles, they boast of the years of training they had. Anyone can learn and play, but it takes a love of teaching to really make a difference in someone's life.

PATIENCE
When you have a love of teaching, you have a seemingly endless resource of patience. This is because what the student sees as "patient" is really just a small step in the educational process. It is a fraction of time just before a correction. When you have something new to teach, whether it is a new technique, or a correction of something being done improperly, and you know exactly how to break it down so it is understandable and accomplishable, you know it is always a short matter of time before the student gets it. And by short, I mean a matter
of seconds, or minutes.

FRIENDLINESS
I respect others and what they feel and have to say. I treat others as I would want to be treated and lessons are always a pleasure to my students, because it is a pleasure for me to teach them.

EXPERIENCE
I have been playing for over 26 years. I have played with a multitude of local orchestras and bands and have done countless studio recording sessions and live shows. All of this experience comes through in my teaching either directly (when it comes time for you to perform) or incrementally.

When you are learning, there is a vast sea of information. Not all of that knowledge is equal in importance. It is incredibly important to be able to distinguish what is important and what is not very important. All of my real-life experience, and continuing experience reveals itself in the form of ensuring my students know what is truly important.

Lest you get the idea that I am a wishy-washy, undemanding teacher, I can assure you this is not the case. Lessons are fun, but that is because they are productive. You will walk away being able to do something, and that requires hard work, and practice.

WHAT I EXPECT FROM MY STUDENTS
Practice.
Practice.
Practice.
And a winning attitude.

I can even work with you if you don't have a winning attitude, but it makes it more fun when you do!

HOW FAST CAN I EXPECT RESULTS?
Some students who were musicians previously leave the first lesson being able to play their first song. Most students however, who have never played an instrument before, can expect to be comfortable bowing (a huge part of the process - half the sound!) within the first few weeks, and will then move on to learning songs. We will be learning sheet music as well, on a very, very easy gradient. After the first couple months, I expect you to tell me which song it is you might like to learn most so that we can start working on it.

RENTALS
I rent out violins of all sizes.
I sell the book that I teach out of (or you can obtain it online or from Sam Ash).

If you have any questions, I am happy to answer them. You can use the contact button on this website and I will gladly answer you in return.

Antoinette is, by far, the best music instructor that I have ever hired. Music has always been a part of my life. As a child, I took piano lessons for years and continued on and off through college. As a complete novice to the violin, I was nervous to begin such a challenging instrument as an adult hobby. Antoinette is encouraging, intelligent and incredibly skilled. Her calm demeanor and patience is vital to one's success. She focuses on the building blocks to a successful technique with ease. I am incredibly grateful to Antoinette for reminding me of how enjoyable music can be. I look forward to our weekly sessions around my busy work schedule. Her location is conveniently located within walking distance from the subway in NYC.

I took violin lessons for a year with an instructor I found through a different organization (not TakeLessons)--and I learned more in one hour with Antoinette than I learned in 30 lessons with that other teacher. In just one lesson, I can see that Antoinette is friendly, smart, encouraging, knows her stuff--and knows how to teach (which not every good player can do). I'm an adult, but I bet she'd be just as great with a student of any age.

About Pedro
I offer lessons to students that have a desire to improve their playing and knowledge of music.

A brief summarization of my process:

-Establish concepts for healthy practice routine with the student. The type of practice is more important than the raw amount of practice.

-Set a 3-4 month goal for study outlining key issues.
-Identify strengths and areas of improvement in the student as they appear in the weeks.
-At the end of the 3 months, all this work and practice comes together in either a recital or a special project (audition, recording, etc.).

-Retrospective review and planning for next set of months.

Within the above framework, I try to encourage:

-Appreciation of music and learning as a whole
-Organization! And techniques to improve it.
-Analytical skills (micro and macro)
-Initiative -- taking a proactive attitude towards one’s learning
-Communication

It was truly a pleasure meeting Concetta for my first ever violin lesson. It is difficult to learn anything at the age 40, specially a musical instrument, but she made it comfortable and easy to understand. She's extremely patient a key quality when teaching a subject such a music to anyone. I would say, give her teaching style a try and you won't regret it. Very knowledgeable indeed.

As a violist with a Master’s degree in Performance from the prestigious Colburn Conservatory, an experienced teacher mentored by respected Suzuki expert Shelley Bears Schleigh and chosen for a Teaching Fellowship with renowned Robert Duke, and an individual with an insatiable passion for psychology and development at all stages, Rachyl offers the complete package of polished performer, trained teacher, and passionate mentor. She has a particular interest in the development of young children, and, having moved to New York in 2017 from the San Diego Symphony to teach at the Brooklyn Music School, Rachyl is living her dream as a teacher. Her main goal for 2018-19 is to further this dream by expanding her studio. You/your child will receive consistent, dedicated care, individually tailored attention according to needs, abilities, and learning styles, and the inspiration to feed the brain and the soul with musical knowledge.

About Rachyl
Teaching is my passion, and the reason I moved to New York. From a young age I have always been deeply invested in the subjects of Development and Nurturing. I consider it my calling in life to pursue these subjects through teaching. My goal is always first and foremost to form a true connection with each individual student, observing their learning patterns carefully and trying different approaches until the student is thriving. My approach is continually positive, reinforcing excellent habits and achievements, and striving to find tiny goals that make a student feel he or she is constantly succeeding. My students find that their trajectory is continually upwards. You or your child would receive regular performance opportunities, regular specific feedback, consistent attention and high-quality musical training.

I am professional violist
, and a violin and viola instructor from the Philadelphia area. I graduated with my Master of Music in Performance with a Teaching Fellowship from the Colburn Conservatory in Los Angeles, a selective school which accepts only 125 students total on full scholarship including room and board. I also spent one year in the San Diego Symphony. I have performed in eight states as well as in Canada and Austria. I now teach lessons at the Brooklyn Music School and for such agencies as Thumbtack, Musika, and Music To Your Home. Last year I taught music at the Brooklyn Heights Montessori School. My primary background is in the Suzuki Method; I have taken the official introductory course this past year, and plan to become officially certified this year. I have taught all levels, learning styles, and ages, I have background working with students who need special consideration, such as those on the autism spectrum or with attention disorders.

Every student is different; therefore there is no one method or strategy that will work universally. I create tailored lesson plans for each student taking into account age, experience, personality and learning style. Lessons can include ear training, music history, harmony, sight reading and improvisation depending on the level and goal of the student. When working with young children, I typically use games and activities and follow Mimi Zweig’s principle of violin teaching, which is based on natural physical motions nurtured in a non-judgmental environment. This pedagogy uses the Suzuki repertoire but can also be used with other books. The Suzuki method is one of the most popular in the US. This method establishes strong musical and technical fundamentals. Other methods lead to similar results and can be just as enjoyable and interesting.
For older children and adults, I choose appropriate repertoire based on their musical interests, while still focusing on technique. Typically ...

About Lidia
I was born in Vitoria-Gasteiz, Spain, and started playing the viola at the age of 5. When I was 19 I moved to London to study at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama where I attained a Bachelor of Music with Honours. Following my Bachelors degree, I completed a Master of Performance at the Royal College of Music and was awarded this in 2014.

I started teaching privately in 2010 and help students of all ages prepare for their exams (grades 1 to 8), auditions and other performances. I create tailored lesson plans for each student and teach both the performance and theory aspects in preparation for the exams. Most of my students are long-term students and have been learning with me for 3-4 years, with some up to 6 years. I take great pride in their success and my students have had a 100% success rate in the ABRSM exams.

In addition t
o teaching privately, I have also taught in various primary schools in the London Borough of Newham, teaching violin to students in years 5 and 6 (4th and 5th Grade) to take steps 1, 2 and grade 1 in the ECAM programme with the London College of Music and the University of West London. This involved designing lessons to ensure students were ready to take the final exams by end of term and varying teaching methods to ensure all learning styles were accommodated.

I have performed in New York City, London and France (including at the Merkin Concert Hall, LaMama Theatre, BBC Proms, the Barbican Centre and the Palace of Versailles) I was also invited to take part in the Philharmonia Orchestra ‘Infernal Dance’ chamber music series and was finalist in the Max and Peggy Morgan Competition run by the Guildhall School of Music & Drama in London.

Other courses and qualifications that I have completed include: ‘Teaching the Violin and Viola: Creating a healthy foundation’ at Northwestern University, a Level 3 Teaching Assistant certification and a Child Protection Awareness programme.

Viola jokes are for losers... I think viola has one of the most gorgeous tone in the entire orchestra family. I can work on solo pieces as well as chamber music / orchestral excerpts of your choice.

About Keiko
I am a violinist of the Attacca Quartet, a NY-based string quartet that has been traveling all over the world! In addition to concertizing, my colleagues and I teach students of all levels wherever we go; we have given lessons, masterclasses and lectures in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Colombia, Peru, Ireland, Australia, Japan, UAE... good thing we all speak the universal language of humanity: music.

I grew up in Yokohama, Japan, but I decided that I was ready to explore the world when I was finishing up the 10th grade. I moved to New York to pursue a musical life and career. I have Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Violin Performance, as well as Artist Diploma in String Quartet Studies from The Juilliard School.

I have been teaching students of all ages since 2005. Many of them were young children who simply enjoy playing the vi
olin, but I have had several students win domestic and international competitions. While I enjoyed the experience of being a part of numerous children's lives tremendously, I am slowly moving towards teaching adults because my busy tour life does not allow for me to be in town all the time.

With my adult students, I often encourage them to work on a solo repertoire of an appropriate level, as well as an ensemble piece that would allow us to develop our musicianship. I am very friendly and casual, but if you ask me to, I can be very tough (I was raised by a tiger mom.)

If you are a beginner and need help with reading music in general, don't worry- I teach a course called "Ear Training" at Juilliard, so that can be a part of our lessons as well.

I look forward to meeting you and making music together!
