Thomas J. W. is an active music teacher, composer, adjudicator, and clinician in the greater Philadelphia area. He has over fifteen years experience as a concert band director, marching band director, jazz improvisation instructor, choral director, private instructor, and marching drill writer. His directing career has included small rural band programs, small metro programs, large high-achieving suburban programs, and non-profit youth bands. In addition to his band compositions, he also has over forty unpublished vocal arrangements to his credit, most written for use with collegiate men's a cappella groups. Thomas taught over 600 online and local private music lessons in 2016.
Thomas has a Bachelor of Science degree in Music Education from The Pennsylvania State University. He holds a teaching certificate in the states of Pennsylvania
and New Jersey and has taught at the secondary level in both states. In addition to both instrumental and choral ensembles at Penn State, Thomas was a student leader in the Penn State Blue Band and a member of the brass section of the Cadets of Bergen County Drum and Bugle Corps in 1993 and 1994. He served as an Associate Director of the Warren Junior Military Band of Youngstown, Ohio from 1995 to 2005. He also served as a visual staff member for the renowned North Penn Marching Knights of Lansdale, PA for one season in 2004.
He is a current adjudicator with Drum Corps International and Cavalcade of Bands. He is a member of MENC, PMEA, NJMEA, ASCAP, CASA, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, and the National Band Association. He appeared in the Marquis Who's Who Among American Educators in 2004 and 2005, an honor rarely bestowed upon teachers, as students who appear in the Who's Who Among American High School Students must nominate them. He currently is a music teacher at the Center for Performing and Fine Arts of the PA Leadership Charter School in West Chester, PA and resides in Downingtown, PA with his wife and two sons.

*** Lesson Details *** My lessons are tailored to the needs and interests of each student. If a student is involved in school music ensembles, we will work with their lesson books from school in addition to material outside of the books, including SmartMusic, Noteflight, and teacher-created materials. We will focus on building proper tone production and individual technique - something that often is difficult to learn in a large ensemble setting.
I am capable of starting a beginner student on any band instrument including percussion, any classical string instrument (violin, viola, cello, string bass), and piano. I can begin a student on drum set and work with them through their first method book, but I would then recommend they find a specialized drum set teacher after a period of six to twelve months.
For advanced students, I work from selected conservatory etude books on developing advanced skills and can work with students on audition pieces for honors bands/orchestras or college auditions.
My lessons are a half-hour once a week, with the option of working for 45 minutes or 60 minutes.
Thomas is honestly an amazing musician and teacher. He was really patient with me. Despite having to deal with major timezone differences (as I live in Myanmar), he took the time to figure it out. Also, he helped me figure out the stuff it took me months to figure out. He also really knows what he's doing. I learned so much in that hour of practice. 10/10 would recommend him.

I am experienced (3 years) in home school tutoring. I mostly work with Florida Virtual School students. I overlook their tests and assignments, and help them with preparations for Discussion Based Assessmemts (DBA). I also help parents with required annual evaluations and how to sign up with home education department. For my tutoring sessions I use skills that include goal-directedness, I teach how to organize learning in small steps and how to set them up; I always strive to motivate and engage my students to make them interested in learning and have fun; I also use self-control skills to teach how to avoid distractions and I show how to use different focusing strategies. I use positive mind set skills to teach how to use failures as learning opportunities.

um and Education; and Masters in Arts (2012) in Teaching English to speakers of other languages, and Bachelors in Music Education (2010), both from Florida Atlantic University, as well as a degree in violin performance from Chicago. I studied piano in Chicago for 10 years & taught both piano & violin for over 20 years. I also teach flute & cello for the past 5 years, as I studied them during my Music Education program. I have taught music for over 24 years using the traditional and Suzuki methods. I am fan of the Essential Elements method and I Can Read Music book for string instruments, and the Alfred's Piano Library for piano. Alfred's piano library can be used for any age as they also have books especially made for adult learners. I also like their music flash cards. For teaching music theory I mostly used Fundamentals of Piano Theory (9 levels) combined with Master Theory (6 levels) books.
I personalize every lesson, and always set goals for my students. Most of my violin students are members of the Florida Youth Orchestra as well as the Gold Coast Youth Orchestra and my piano students participate in Pompano Beach Piano competition and the annual Piano Guild auditions. I teach any age and any level, and always stress that learning a new instrument is very similar to learning a new language, it needs a lot of patience, persistence and repetitions. My lessons are customized to my students needs, and are work in progress as they needs may change over time. I always remind my students that music can give them instant gratification when they learn to play favorite songs. I always encourage my students to tell me about their music preferences, so I can incorporate them in their music lessons.
*** Lesson Details *** All my tutoring sessions include reviews of previously learned material and if possible the use of technology. I use students books but often bring extra study materials if necessary. All my lessons include technique and reading music. I like to use the Finger Power for piano students and Essential Elements for my string students, and scales for both. Music theory: I use Master Theory and Fundamentals of Piano Theory books for younger ages, Alfred's music flash cards to support learning notes and musical terminology, and of course the fun part performance.
Besides Essential Elements for strings I also use String Tunes and I Can Read Music to add more fun to the lessons as well as support reading music during the lesson. For piano students I use Holiday Treats book, which comes in 2 different levels: Beginner & Intermediate, so my students have a new songs for a specific holiday.
*** Studio Equipment *** I always bring violin with me to be able to show what I teach.
*** Travel Equipment *** The students need to have their books and assigned material ready for tutoring. Instrumental students needs to have their music books, flashcards & instrument available as well as a pencil. I always stress with my students to be organized and prepared for their lesson, this way they will be able to focus better during the lesson. I always bring my violin with me. I also ask that the room where the lesson takes place be free of any distractions, such other siblings or any other noise. The quiet environment helps in faster learning.

I'm sorry, I cannot handle this Instructor for my children. She wasn't me but she's not quite the people person I expected. Her personality is not a good match for a high school tutor. Unfortunately her English is not good enough. Her accent is entirely too strong. Also she does not know enough Geometry to help my kids.

*** I provide sheet music for new tunes, stickers, and I keep on hand a basic fix-it kit for common instrument issues. I also try to keep backup books and a shoulder rest around at my studios so if someone forgets their equipment we can still make good use of the lesson.
I expect the student to provide their instrument, shoulder rest, binder and sheet protectors for loose pages, blank notebook, and any supplementary books we may need. I don't require lots of books - just ones you'll use!

Laura has been a great teacher for my 6 year-old daughter (starting taking lessons when she was 5). She is endlessly patient and has a perfect balance of fun and instruction in all her lessons. She helped us every step of the way--picking out the right rental instrument, finding extra workbooks that would be fun, coming up with ways to make practicing at home enticing. Laura is made to be a fiddle teacher--she has a obvious passion both for the music and sharing it with her students. My daughter left every lesson with Laura beaming with pride. I'd recommend anyone searching for a teacher to go with Laura!
Many teachers who teach viola are primarily violinists, and are not as aware of the extra attention to detail and slightly different techniques that this instrument requires. Since I am primarily a violist, I can teach tone production, posture, and other techniques from the perspective of a player who has spent time learning the idiosyncrasies that make the difference between an excellent violist and a competent one.
My teaching style is inspired by my initial training in the Suzuki method, and my studies with violist and pedagogue Karen Ritscher at Oberlin Conservatory. Please note, I have not yet received training as a Suzuki teacher and use the Suzuki method books and the teaching I received as a Suzuki student as a jumping off point for working on each student's individual needs.
I studied viola at Oberlin Conservatory of Music and moved to Portland three years ago to pursue performance and teaching opportunities. Since then I have performed with Classical Revolution PDX, Cascadia Composers and ARCO PDX and am a member of Macaulay Balkan.
My initial studies were on violin using the Suzuki method, which has greatly influenced my teaching approach. However, I am dedicated to customizing the lesson time and structure to the needs and priorities of my students.

At the first lesson, Grace took the time to understand my musical goals then made a solid assessment of my current level of playing. She was able to identify small changes in my technique/form and crafted modifications in my warmup to support the change in technique.

I feel Grace is a great teacher for my eight year old daughter. This is my daughters first time playing an instrument. Grace is so patient and respectful to my daughter. Grace is teaching us a little at a time which I believe is a good pace for us. I have had to learn as well so I can assist my daughter in her practice at home. This part I didn't expect but Grace offers guidance. I feel through Graces lessons she not only is learning how to play the violin but learning self discipline and respect.

***Bio*** Born in Tashkent, Uzbekistan in 1987, Anna started her studies at the age of 4 at the Uspensky Specialist Music School. Her first solo performance was at the age of 8. At the age of 14, she took first prize in the Glazunov International Violin Competition in Paris. She is the Grand-Prix winner of the International Violin Competition held in Alma-Ata (Kazakhstan). In 2009 Anna performed with the Gunma Youth Symphony Orchestra Festival in Tokyo, and in concert series with the Symphony Orchestra of Hamburg (Germany), conducted by Claus-Peter Modest, held in Bukhara (Uzbekistan). In 2013 she performed a debut recital in New York City at the Lyric Chamber Music S
ociety. Anna has served as Concertmaster of the Lynn University Philharmonia in Boca Raton, FL. Participated in master classes with Leon Fleisher, Guillermo Figueroa, Schmuel Ashkenasi, Daniel Heifetz, Elmar Oliveira, Philip Setzer, Ilya Kaler, Philip Fowke, Mikhail Gotzdinner; as a member of orchestra performed under the baton of John Nelson, Albert-George Schram, Jon Robertson, Guillermo Figueroa, Greg Ritchey; worked and performed with such distinguished artists, as Ilya Kaler, Lawrence Dutton of the Emerson String Quartet, Yael Weiss, and Ralph Kirshbaum. Anna graduated with MM from Lynn University in 2015. In May 2019, Anna will obtain her Doctoral degree in Musical Arts from SUNY Stony Brook.
*** Lesson Details *** The first lesson is a process of establishing professional contact between a student and a teacher, therefore I will ask you to do a couple of exercises in order to figure out your current level. I will then recommend you the appropriate repertoire.

Anna is an excellent and very patient teacher. I am an adult student that has zero experience in music but in the last few weeks I’ve learned how to read music and actually how to use my violin all thanks to Anna.
Catherine is a performer, teacher, and arranger. She has performed in world class venues such as Weill Recital Hall in Carnegie Hall, Merkin Hall, Kosciuszko Foundation, as well as the Museum of Natural History, and she has performed with over thirty different chamber ensembles, including the American String Quartet and the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra. Her career developments are primarily in music, but she also pursues interest in creative writing, journal writing and human rights. She has given many community performances and raised charity funds for organizations such as World Vision, A. G. Rhodes Health & Rehab nursing home, Columbia Hospital, Corpus Christi Church, and InterVarsity Christian Fellowship.
Catherine initially gained her musical inspiration through her family and has been performing since her youth. Her family provided
her countless opportunities to perform, to participate in event planning, and to experiment with new music and arranging. She grew up participating in her mother's studio recitals at home and enjoys an annual family tradition of organizing and performing Christmas programs at church. One of Catherine's projects during her studies at the Manhattan School of Music was the Symposium Concert Series, which has led her to perform in apartment homes around the city and build a community of young artists. She has made countless arrangements for solo viola and viola with various ensembles which she often performs.
Catherine resides in Brooklyn, New York with her husband, Lawrence. She plays on a Raymond J. Melanson viola made in 1987.

I have played the violin and the viola for 13 years, and have studied both extensively at a high level. You can expect a good mixture of technique and pieces in our lessons, along with many conversations about body awareness and tension release. The last two points are my passion projects, as I aim to help you develop pain free playing at all costs!
I am currently a freelance violist and strings teacher in the greater Hartford area. I completed a masters degree in viola performance at The Hartt School in December of 2018.
In the past year, I have collaborated with Teaching Artists International in traveling to Peru and Guatemala to observe and teach students immersed in the El Sistema philosophy. El Sistema began in Venezuela as a method of orchestral instruction that carries with it an essential component of social justice and inclusivity.

Jake has a keen sense of how to pace lessons, and has a sharp eye & ear for technique. If I had just taught myself through YouTube I might be okay at violin, but the quality would be nowhere near where it is today without Jake's help.
