About Geoff

Hi, my name is Geoff and I play Double Bass, Bass Guitar, Cello and Piano. I played full time in a Symphony orchestra for 20 yrs., began playing Piano in 1963, Bass Guitar 1970, Double Bass 1977 and Cello 1982. I prescribe lessons complete with Solo, Ensemble, and Technical Playing and Reading Skills thoroughly as well as progressively. I make the lessons fun and interesting and relate well with all types of personalities. My students view me as a teacher and friend who' s a good listener when they have things like overloads in homework from school and other complications that kids face. They do great at NYSSMA and are asked to play in all ensembles at school. I love animals and my hobbies are hiking in the mountains including in snow and ice, camping, building things and work on my own car when I can. Most of my students stay with me for

8-10 yrs. and handle themselves very well in all ensembles. They play to earn scholarships for college as well and play for life. Happy Playing!

About Gio

I studied music at UCF (Orlando), focusing on classical and jazz guitar, but I also have years of experience playing rock, blues, folk, hip-hop, and musical theater on both guitar and drums.

I have been teaching guitar, drums, and piano for about eight years to students of all ages. Music is what I'm passionate about and it's what I enjoy. I want to inspire that same passion into the hearts and minds of others.

I am a laid-back teacher, fun, and I focus on the needs, abilities, and ambitions of the student. In turn, students must realize that learning an instrument takes a lot of work and dedication. One can't expect to learn very much if s/he only practices or thinks about the instrument during the lesson. If the student is willing to put some time into practicing, then I will help them go far!

o Equipment ***
I have several guitars, a drum kit, djembe, mandolin, clarinet and full-size keyboard.

This was my first lesson with Nick. He is a very nice guy. He created a calm, relaxed atmosphere in his studio, and he was clear when he gave me particular instructions. His knowledge of music theory in general, and of the five-string banjo in particular, was quite impressive. I would recommend him highly to both a beginner and to anyone (like myself) who is in need of a refresher course. I am very much looking forward to my next lesson.

Nick Russo is a fantastic tutor for kids and adults who would like to learn Ukulele, guitar, banjo or other instruments. He makes ‘learning fun’ he's friendly and cheerful. I don’t have any background in music but, Nick made it easy for me to understand the notes and how it works. I always look forward to every lesson. I Highly recommended Nick to everyone.

I’ve been taking guitar lessons with Nick now for a few months and it’s been a terrific experience — cannot say enough good things. Each lesson builds on the last and Nick tailors them to my ability and musical interests mixing in enough music theory, which makes learning both productive and enjoyable. Most importantly I feel like I’m beginning to understand how music works and not just blindly memorizing patterns or scales. I considered online courses before choosing Nick, but there’s no substitution for one-to-one instruction. Nick’s feedback and instruction are invaluable.

I was a little concerned about trying to pick up guitar in my early 40s, but its been a rewarding experience so far and I’m looking forward to more lessons with Nick.

About Christopher

In my many years of teaching and being taught I have realized that the best teachers are those who really focus on the needs of the student and help them realize their passion for playing music. Since getting a Batchelor's degree in Jazz Studies from NYU, I have performed in festivals and concert halls all over the world. I've really enjoyed taking lessons from Chris. He is knowledgable and able to articulate intricate musical concepts while presenting a casual, welcoming vibe. He honed in quickly on where I was in my training and steered the lessons to what I needed most to learn at that moment. I've progressed quite a bit since taking lessons with Chris. I'm playing more and better and I can't think of any higher praise for a teacher.

It was always a lifelong dream of mine to play the bass and Chris has made that a reality by providing affordable lessons and taking a slow, hands on approach to teaching me the bass. He is also such a nice guy so that makes the whole experience that much better. I am forever thankful that I met Chris and look forward to working with him more!

Private Bass Guitar Teacher

I teach all guitar levels, all ages, with many years of experience. My students have earned the highest scores on the NYSSMA (New York Music Association) yearly evaluation. Aside from that, the relationship with my students is always very respectful, friendly and patient.

About Juan

New York city composer and guitarist Juan is a native of Ecuador raised in Colombia. He immigrated to Miami at age 20 to escape the political climate of the late 90’s, and resides in Manhattan since 2008.

Juan’s music blends elements from his unique life experiences, having been raised as an only child by a single mother in a bohemian environment. He was a recording and touring rock guitarist in Colombia, and he has studied East Asian music extensively, inspired by interaction with musicians and artists in China, Japan, and Indonesia.

His latest accomplishments include a performance of his composition “Reino Incierto” at Carnegie Hall (2015) and Sounds of the City, as well as a performance of his guitar quartet composition “Rising” by the UK guitar quartet.

Juan currently studies classical guitar with Mark DelPriora, chair of

the Guitar Department at the Manhattan School of Music, where he earned a master degree in composition. His mentors include composers Susan Botti, Reiko Fueting, and electronic music pioneer Joel Chadabe. He earned a Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Florida, where he studied jazz guitar with Tom Lippincott, and composition with Susan Epstein-Garcia.

Juan is also an avid cartoonist, collector of rare books and little cars, food adventurer and runner.

*** Lesson Details ***
Guitar teaching encompasses many disciplines. One has to be a bit of a psychologist in order to gauge a potential student needs and musical sensibilities. The mathematical aspect of musical notation and rhythm makes us part mathematicians. In the end, there is also a self-actualizing aspect to guitar teaching in the sense that we are always witness to those moments that made us decide a career on music.
During my years of guitar teaching I have encountered many types of students, and I have learned from them as much as they have learned from me as they make me question aspects of music that I would have never thought about. I have learned to not take for granted the definition of concepts such as rhythm and harmony, and to look at guitar technique from different perspectives as I find ways to accommodate to a student’s capabilities. Ultimately, it is also a job that requires a lot of planning and structure. My first step, generally, is to assess the student’s ability and interest to find material suitable for them. Then, I proceed to familiarize with the student’s musical tastes and sensibilities to assign practice material accordingly. For example, if the student is interested in rock or pop music, we will work on a particular song that fits his level and also solves a particular technical problem. During that process I will answer any of the student’s questions, and provide insight into musical terminology. We will also work on basic concepts of rhythm, melody, and harmony. My training as a composer and jazz guitarists also enables me to tap into the student’s creative side. In that case, we would start with a basic blues progression and blues scales, and work on the basics of improvisation or songwriting.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Basement studio w/ small keyboard, amp, acoustic guitar, 3 electric guitars, music books w/ seating for parents and lots of magazines!

*** Travel Equipment ***
I provide music sheets, students should have an instrument, tuner, paper, pencil, and a metronome.

*** Specialties ***
I teach fundamentals of music theory, principles of jazz improvisation, classical guitar technique and repertoire, song writing, pop songs, sight reading, and overall musicianship, as well as Jazz, Rock, Blues, Bossa Nova, and other Latin Styles.

With a patient and intuitive approach, Juan tailors each lesson to fit not only the student’s skill level, but also desire for depth of understanding. When I first began taking lessons, I was only able to plunk a few chords and play along with a few basic songs. However, over the course of a year and a half with Juan, I gained a foundational knowledge of the classical guitar, as well as the confidence to site read and play a range of other styles of guitar music. He seamlessly integrated music theory concepts into song studies, helping me learn major/minor scales and chord shapes, and then apply this knowledge to better understand song structures and composition. It has been such a great experience learning from Juan, especially because he is both an exemplary teacher and guitar player!

Carissa Austria, age 8, learned piano with Jeff. Her lessons were instrumental in giving her the incentive to practice on her own. Jeff created lessons that made my daughter curious on how to play on her own and experimented with certain keys and sounds. Thank you Jeff for giving my daughter the deep insight to playing the piano not only from her weekly lessons but encouraging her to practice on her own with minimum supervision.

Nick is really the best instructor ever! He is very knowledgeable about different styles and techniques, but he tailors each lesson so that the student is learning on their own terms - not pushing a methodology or using cookie cutter plans. He is very patient and kind and will work with you at your own pace, whether you are a beginner or want to learn on a more professional level. He plays a ton of different instruments and has experience touring with bands as well as classical training. He's really a one-stop-shop for all your musical needs! Hire him! He's made my life a lot better by teaching me his ways.

Aaron is a positive and inspiring instructor. He is very competent on the instrument (and I believe he is well versed in more tha

Sometimes that has not been so easy, as with Modes, but he is willing to modify the lessons according to what I have wanted to learn and how easily I can absorb it. If there's something I'm not grasping, he tries to explain it in a different manner and with a little effort on my part, I can comprehend it. He definitely wants his students to learn and have fun, while also making it challenging."
