About Alison BinShing
Born in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, Bin Shin (Alison) began playing cello at the age of 8. She received a Bachelor of Music from the Shanghai Conservatory of Music in 2002 and a Master of Music from the Longy School of Music of Bard College in Cambridge, Massachusetts in 2013.

Ms. Alison has held several orchestral positions, including with the Malaysia National Symphony Orchestra, the Radio Television Malaysia Orchestra, The Youth Orchestra of Shanghai, Boston Chamber Symphony, the Metrowest Symphony Orchestra, Boston Callioppe Orchestra, and The Greater Boston Asian- American Symphony Orchestra. She has extensive international performing experience, including an engagement with the National Symphony of Malaysia at the Asian Orchestra Festival held in Japan in 2004 as part of a tour of China, Japan, Korea and Thailand. As a member of the
Radio Television Orchestra in Malaysia, she performed on several Malaysian television shows including Astro and Malaysian Idol. These experiences helped shape Ms. Alisonas an artist and inspired her to nurture the next generation of musicians.

In addition to her appreciable experience as a performance artist, Ms. Alison's commitment to mentor future generations of cellists motivated her to tutor at the Shanghai ABRSM Music School, the Shanghai American International School, Edvox Strings Music School in Singapore, and the Bentley Music Academy in Malaysia. She has instructed a cello section, taught at a private cello studio and instructed orchestral repertoire classes. These experiences have helped her to further develop her expertise in music education and engagement as a qualified music teacher in greater Boston. In addition to employing a traditional teaching style, her dedication to cello and teaching inspired her to become certified as a Suzuki method trained instructor in 2011. Ms. Alison enjoys instilling the same passion she has for music in her students and hopes to encourage her students to develop their own musical style.

In 2010, before coming to the United States to study for her Master in Music, Ms. Alison began her own quintet, The Trout Quintet, which performed classical music in Kuala Lumpur. In addition to Ms. Alison's extensive classical string music repertoire, she often experiments with different musical styles such as Bossa Nova and Lieder, performing as a guest with several groups in the Boston area. Her creativity and drive have helped her to become an accomplished performance artist and a well-respect music teacher.

Starting in September, Ms. Alison will be performing with the Waltham Philharmonic and the New Philharmonic Orchestra etc. In addition, she will be leading the cello section at the Josiah Quincy School using the groundbreaking El Sistema system, pioneered in Venezuela by Dr. Jose Antonio Abreu.

I've had two lessons so far and Alison seems like a really wonderful teacher. She is very attentive to detail and good at giving advice and feedback. I haven't taken music lessons in a long time, and I've never played a string instrument before, but already with Alison's expert instruction, I feel like I'm really learning. I highly recommend her!

Dr. Spaeth is currently working with Palen Music Center. He is also teaching at the University of Tulsa as an adjunct faculty member during Spring 2018. Spaeth maintains an online music studio through TakeLessons, where he teaches several instruments privately and in group settings including saxophone, guitar, oboe, music theory, flute, clarinet, and piano.

Dr. Carl Spaeth taught at Oklahoma State University as a Lecturer of Saxophone and Music Theory during Dr. Jeffrey Loeffert's sabbatical beginning August 2017. His duties included graduate saxophone lessons, graduate music theory review, graduate saxophone pedagogy, and saxophone studio class.

Prior to working at OSU, Spaeth was Instructor of Jazz and Saxophone at South Dakota State University from 2014-2017. His responsibilities included directing the annual SDSU/Brookings Optim
ist Jazz Festival, directing Jazz Ensembles I-II, Jazz Combo, Jazz Improvisation lessons, Jazz Pedagogy, online Jazz Appreciation, private saxophone lessons, saxophone quartets, private oboe lessons, and group guitar class.

Spaeth completed his Doctor of Musical Arts degree in saxophone performance at the University of Kansas in 2014, and his Master of Music Pedagogy and Performance from Oklahoma State University in 2011. He graduated from Harrah High School in 2002, earned his Bachelor of Music Education from Southwestern Oklahoma State University in 2008, and was a 5th-12th grade Head Band Director at Fairview Public schools. He is currently a member of the North American Saxophone Alliance, the Jazz Education Network, Music Teachers National Association, National Association of College Wind and Percussion Instructors, and an Honorary Member of Tau Beta Sigma. He has held previous memberships with Kappa Kappa Psi, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, Kappa Delta Pi, and the Oklahoma Bandmasters Association.

While at KU, Spaeth was also a graduate teaching assistant for the saxophone studio and jazz studies program. His responsibilities included Assistant Director of the KU Jazz Festival, directing Jazz Ensembles II-III, directing Jazz Combo III-VI, directing Saxophone Quartets II-III, teaching private saxophone lessons, assisting in saxophone studio class, and teaching the music education woodwind methods course. His Lecture Recital Document, A Performer’s Analysis of Selected Jazz Works for Saxophone Quartet, featured an interview with Bob Mintzer. Spaeth was a member of KU Jazz Ensemble I, KU Saxophone Quartet I, and KU's Helianthus New Music Ensemble. As a member of KU's Jazz Ensemble 1, Spaeth has performed with Dave Douglas, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Alex Sipiagin, Steve Owen, Gary Foster, Steve Houghton, Clint Ashlock, David von Kampen, Peter Epstein, Jeff Miley, James Miley, Roger Shew, and Brian Hamada, Brandon Draper, Rich Wheeler, Beau Bledsoe, Jeff Harshbarger, and Matt Otto. In July 2014, Spaeth went on a European tour with KU Jazz Ensemble I featuring Steve Leisring and Deborah Brown. Together, they performed at the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland, the Vienne Jazz Festival in France, and performed in several cities in Germany. Recordings by this band resulted in KU winning the DownBeat Student Award (Graduate College Large Jazz Ensemble Division) in 2015.

While at OSU, Spaeth was a GTA for the saxophone studio and music theory programs. His responsibilities included Music Theory I-IV tutoring and grading, sight-singing grading, piano labs, classical and jazz saxophone lessons, saxophone quartet coaching, saxophone studio Webmaster, and saxophone studio class. Spaeth was a member of the OSU Wind Ensemble and Jazz Ensemble 1. He had a regularly performing jazz trio and played in OSU's X2End saxophone quartet. The X2End quartet performed locally at the 2011 Navy Band Saxophone Symposium in Washington D.C., at the 2011 NASA Region IV Conference, and has won the state and division rounds of the 2010-2011 MTNA Chamber Music Competition. The X2End quartet went on to win the 3rd place prize at the national final round of the MTNA Chamber Music Competition. They also were the Division II Chamber Ensemble winners at the 2011 Hubbard Music Competition where they were awarded the 2nd place prize in the overall finals. Spaeth's final degree paper at OSU was a study of composer/performer collaboration. He traveled to Texas, Michigan, and Ohio to interview saxophonists and composers including David Dees, Peter Fischer, John Sampen, Marilyn Shrude, Joe Lulloff, and Charles Ruggiero. He has presented his lecture at the 2011 Navy Band Saxophone Symposium, the 2011 NASA Region IV Conference, and the 2012 OSU Single Reed Summit. As a member of OSU's Jazz Ensemble 1, he has performed with Bob Sheppard, Conrad Herwig, Wayne Bergeron, and Andy Martin.

While at SWOSU, Spaeth performed as a member of the marching band, wind ensemble, Jazz Ensemble A, saxophone quartet, and his own jazz combo named Five-Seven. As a member of SWOSU's Jazz Ensemble A, he has performed with Dan Haerle, Bob Bowman, Jack Mouse, Fred Forney, Janice Borla, Eddie Daniels, Pamela York, Lynn Seaton, Carl Allen, Dr. Michael Cox, Tom Williams, Dr. Robert Chambers, Dave Hanson, Drori Mondlak, Delores Williams, Byron Stripling, Frank Wess, Kenny Drew Jr., Dennis Mackrel, Bill Watrous, Rich Eames, Jennifer Leitham, and Randy Drake.

Spaeth's primary saxophone instructors have been Vince Gnojek, Dr. Jeffrey Loeffert, Dr. Ann Bradfield, Dr. Keith Talley, and William Rodney Hull. He has had additional instruction in lessons and masterclasses from Gary Foster, Dr. Joseph Murphy, Dr. Michael Cox, Bob Sheppard, Johnny Salinas, Dr. Kimberly Goddard Loeffert, Dr. Geoffrey Deibel, Dr. Jonathan Nichol, Dr. Griffin Campbell, Dr. James Laughlin, and Dr. David Dees. Spaeth's jazz directors have included Dan Gailey, Bob McCurdy, Dr. Jonathan Martin, Dr. Keith Talley, and Dr. Terry Segress.

​Spaeth enjoys recording several instruments in his home studio and composing new music. His compositions that have been performed include his big band arrangement of Cat Battles by Joshua Redman, September in the Refrain (alto saxophone and electronics), Funk-o-matic (jazz combo), Smooth (jazz combo), and The Deadline Arrives at Dawn (alto saxophone and electronics). As an advocate of new music involving the saxophone, he has participated in a commissioning consortium for Alone Together by composer David MacDonald through Kick Starter. In 2013, Spaeth performed the premier of Cuento #3 by Nelson Ramirez Diaz. During summer of 2014, he recorded selections from Dr. John Walker's "The Alto Saxophone in the Attic," published by Carl Fischer. At the 10th Annual SDSU/Brookings Optimist Jazz Festival in 2015, Spaeth directed SDSU Jazz Ensemble I's premier of Dog, Tired by David von Kampen.

​Dr. Spaeth is a Conn-Selmer Endorsing Artist. He hosted the North American Saxophone Alliance Region 3 (ND, SD, NE, MN, IA) Conference at South Dakota State University on March 17-18, 2017. On Saturday, April 8, 2017, Spaeth performed Dreams in the Dusk by David Biedenbender with South Dakota State University's Wind Symphony, directed by Dr. Jacob Wallace. On Monday, February 6, 2017, Spaeth performed the premiere of Lhotse for alto saxophone and percussion by Steve Danyew with Dr. Aaron Ragsdale. In April 2017, Spaeth performed solo tenor saxophone and orchestral clarinet in Ethan Bortnick's national PBS Special called "Generations of Music," which featured special guest, Peter Yarrow, from Peter, Paul and Mary.

You can play what you can hear. I work on developing the student's mental concept of how a particular piece of music might sound. This solid musical thinking translates into a reliable technique. Technique should come naturally and should not be overly thought, but I will explain what seems to work for me and analyze the student's playing.

Beginning students start with a method such as the well-known 'Piano Adventures'. Most lessons should include some study of theory. More advanced students will work on progressively more demanding literature.

I began my violin studies at age 9, with my humble public school string program

I continued through high school and into college, playing and singing with auditioned district ensembles, school musicals, and chamber choirs, coming in as runner up in my high school's concerto competition, and performing twice in Carnegie Hall. I studied opera, vocal pedagogy, and passed my piano proficiency exam from the advanced class.

In 2003, I earned my violin performance degree at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, and soon after, joined the Kansas City-based Celtic folk group, Tullamore. I have enjoyed 13 seasons with this lauded regional group, playing countless esteemed Celtic festivals across the country and embarking on five international tours of Ireland and Scotland, as well as a Caribbean cruise hosted for our fans. Our sixth international tour is scheduled for 2019 in Scotland.

In 2014, I relocated to Hampton, Virginia, where I auditioned for the Hampton Roads Philharmonic, and currently play as a first violinist.

In 2015, I began playing with Brackish Water Jamboree, an award-winning Americana band, featured on NPR's Out of the Box series with Paul Shugrue, and host of the NorFOLK Festival.

Throughout this time, I have enjoyed teaching a full and enriching music studio of students: hosting recitals, open mics, and ensemble rehearsals, and watching students achieve goals they didn't know were even possible. Music has been a special part of my life since I was 4 years old. I took lessons for 10 years and continued to play in college for the Naval Academy Women's Glee Club as the accompanist. While with the Glee Club, I had the opportunity and honor to sing for two Presidents and play piano for one, and sing with Beyonce as part of Obama's Inauguration Celebration.

I specialize in teaching children as I put a great emphasis on fun! I want students to have joy playing before it gets difficult in order to encourage them to play longer. Melanie was an amazing piano instructor for my twin daughters. They very much enjoyed every lesson with her. She used creative and kind methods to get them to practice and enjoy learning.

Piano has so many challenges for beginners so I emphasize the basics early. A student wants to be able to continue advancing independently and needs to have a proper foundation of theory in order to do that.
Students may have talents in playing by ear and may have interest in making their own compositions, I am a teacher who will encourage these ambitions. Not forgetting, again, to continue pressing the study of theory.
Knowing how to hone in on a student's learning style has helped me keep individuals moving forward and keep the instruction exciting!
I love music and just want others to get to express themselves and find the joy in it that I do.

Music has been a central pulse to my entire life. I started taking piano lessons at age 5 and picked up the clarinet in elementary school. By the end of middle school I was writing songs on the piano and guitar and trying to get anyone I knew to play in a band with me.
In High School I finally did manage to play in a band that would play shows in the Greater Rochester Area in New York State. Once I hit age 18, I packed my bags and moved to San Diego where I continued working on my craft and started my new life.
I never stopped playing music, writing songs, and trying to find people to collaborate with. By the time I started my career as a hairstylist, I knew that I had to share my love and passion for music with others and endeavored to build a student schedule.
My first students, as an adult, were my future in-laws. Mother, father and si
ster in-law learned piano, guitar and music theory with me. My late father in-law had a left leg amputation and was blind. We taped rice on the back of the guitar neck so he would have a tactile reference to his frets. It felt so good to bring a dream of his to life and to prove to naysayers that anyone can play, even if the challenges are far greater than average.
Within a year, I had enough referrals to fill 2 days of the week with students. I have held 3 recitals and plan on having a holiday recital this year.
I will never stop sharing music with others and look forward to meeting any new students granted via this platform.

Students will learn how to read music, understand and apply basic music theory concepts, and learn how to practice with effective strategies. Repertoire will focus more on Classical music, but will include other styles as well.

About Elyse
I recently moved to the Peninsula from Texas, where I taught piano for the Texas Christian University Music Preparatory Division for five years. I earned my Masters of Music in Piano Pedagogy degree from TCU in 2014, and before that my Bachelors of Music in Piano Pedagogy degree from the University of Oklahoma. I have lots of experience teaching students of all ages and ability levels. My main goals are for my students to learn to read music, understand basic music theory concepts so they can apply them through improvisation and composition, use effective practice strategies to learn any piece they want to learn, and to always enjoy the process of learning to play piano. I also really enjoy tailoring curriculum to each individual students learning style and interests. I know that students who play music they enjoy will practice more and I

I teach the Taubman Technique. Developed by Dorothy Taubman, this technique teaches the motions that are virtually invisible & which comprise a virtuoso technique. This technique also protects the student from injuries associate with piano playing, Along with teaching technique, I incorporate Theory as well. Teaching the piano is not work for me, it is a way of life. The lessons will reflect my love for what I do. You will leave your lesson with something new learned & you will have had an engaging & fun time in the process.

About Tony
I am a Brooklyn boy whose life has revolved around music from the start. First I sang. I still sing. As a child I taught myself the recorder, accordion, guitar & piano. I performed on all except the accordion. I attended a Music & Art HS focusing on flute & piano. I have a BA, MM & in 2004 was awarded a Doctorate in Flute Performance from the University of Washington, Seattle. Currently, I study piano with Edna Golandsky, the founder of The Golandsky Institute. She teaches the Taubman Technique developed by her teacher, Dorothy Taubman. This method teaches the movements that lie beneath a virtuoso technique while protecting the student/performer from the injuries commonly suffered by so many pianists. I teach this technique. Tony is a fantastic and engaging teacher who has been teaching my 10 year old son piano for several years now at The Brooklyn Conservatory of Music. His enthusiasm is contagious and we are so grateful to know him as a teacher and an all-around great person!

Tony has been my son's flute teacher since February. He treats children with respect and honesty, which is transpatent. He inspires them with his own beautiful sound on flute or piano while playing duets, but doesn't overly challenge or intimidate them.
We're all happy with the progress we hear and even more pleased that daily practice, though still requiring some parental support, continues to be pleasant and comfortable for my son.
We truly appreciate Tony's humor as well as his warmth. We're so fortunate to have found him.

I first met Tony over a decade ago when I was around 12. From the time I was in middle school, Tony has been kind, caring, attentive, and enthusiastic. He treats his students of all ages with respect and pushes them to be their best. Tony is a teacher in the truest sense of the word - he truly loves his students and this music, and instills that sense of wonder into every lesson. He cares about his students beyond their musical interests and takes the time to forge a true connection with them individually. I cannot say enough about the type of musician, teacher, and human being Tony is, and would highly recommend him for students of all ages.
