My approach to teaching involves combining work on technical fundamentals and transcription. I find that starting with detailed technical practice makes the achievement of a player's goals quicker, and transcribing from recordings adds real playing experience and is invaluable for building musical vocabulary.

I have been playing the bass guitar as my primary instrument since 2000. I have performed, recorded and written with a number of successful bands in the past. I am happy to take students at any skill level, and for any style. I believe strongly in integrating music theory and ultimately moving students toward musical self-suffiency, rather than focusing exclusively on learning particular pieces.

Thanks Ben!
He is patient, kind, and highly knowledgeable. I clearly see the upward trajectory in my kids' musical capabilities. One of my kids can be difficult to deal with, especially when he is tired, but Ben would mold his approach to the lesson on the spot to keep my kid engaged (e.g., instead of continuing the lesson on the actual piano, he'd switch to a fun music-oriented game).

He's nice, chill, fun, easy to talk to, flexible...
I learned so much from his lessons because he can come down to beginners level.
The way he explains things are simple and easy to understand even I didn't have any music background.
I really enjoyed lessons from him. If my time works out, I would love to come back to his class again!

I cannot learn something without wanting to immediately begin sharing what I know. That's what inspired me to begin teaching, and it continues to drive me today.
My credo is, "Take fun seriously." There is a reason we say that we "play" music; it is meant to be entertaining, for the listener and the performer. I know you want to learn to play an instrument so that you have one more pleasure in your life, and not to take up a new profession. But I also assume the highest potential in my students. If something is worth learning, it's worth learning well. My goal is for people to say to each other, "There seem to be a lot of good guitarists coming out of the Madison area. What's in the water?" My bottom line: Whatever your personal objectives, it is my job to discover them and help you meet them, whether you're interested performing at the campfire or the concert hall.
If you do not live nearby, we can learn together through online chat via FaceTime, Skype, or Google Hangout. I ...

I have played the Bass since 2003 and have extensive teaching experience on the instrument. The bass is the foundation of the rhythm section in rock, pop and jazz. I help bass students develop a strong instrumental technique as well as an approach to the important role that the bass plays in a musical ensemble.

The feedback that I would give is that I wish there was more of a plan for my first lesson. I was simply asked to talk about my musical experience, which is fine, but I wish I was asked to play some scales, riffs, intervals etc. Also, we didn't talk very much about knowing goals for the lesson or for music were so the lesson felt a bit undirected. But music is pretty exploratory so I might be a bit harsh."
