Includes singing technique, movement and gestures, repertoire selection, musicality and interpretation, diction, pitch memory, sight-singing, etc., with a focus on Broadway and other musical theater repertoire, according to the student's experience and needs.
Both voice and piano lessons are based on a foundation of healthy technique while incorporating musicianship skills and encouraging the student to develop their own creativity. While my focus as a performer is opera and other classical music, I am experienced in teaching Broadway/musical theater, pop, rock, R&B, folk, and other styles and genres. I encourage my students to explore new styles and apply good technique to any style they may choose to sing or play.

As a member of both NATS (National Association for Teachers of Singing) and ACDA (American Choral Directors Association) I am constantly working to improve my teaching skills by keeping up with the latest pedagogical research. I love sharing new tips and techniques with my students!
I strive to create a lesson environment that is open and honest, where my students are never afraid to ask questions or try something new. I am always happy to explain concepts in a different way and I encourage improvisation and creativity in addition to healthy technique and strong musicianship.

I have been singing since I was 3, anything and everything from Michael Jackson to Elvis Presley to Luciano Pavarotti. Originally from Colorado, I studied music/theatre, as well as vocal pedagogy at The University of Colorado at Boulder, where I graduated with highest honors. I made my Broadway debut in "The Phantom of the Opera" at age 24. I also performed in "Chess in concert" as a featured rock tenor soloist at the New Amsterdam Theatre on Broadway with Josh Groban. I have understudied and performed lead roles in the first AEA National Tour of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s "Whistle Down the Wind." Regionally, I have played many lead roles all over the United States in productions including "Les Miserables," "Miss Saigon," "The Wild Party," and "She Loves Me."
As an ASCAP recording artist, currently I am working in the studio with a full production team on my first pop/rock album. I also often sing on demos for producers and write songs for other artists in many different genres.
As a TV/Film actor, most recently I was on set with Marvel's TIARA 2 on Netflix. I have booked lead roles in 4 SAG-AFTRA short films, as well as the comedic lead in a SAG-AFTRA Web-series. I was called back for producers as a Series Regular for "The Knick," an episodic series produced and directed by Steven Soderbergh on Cinemax.
My audition prep will help you master your sides for any playing space; Broadway plays/musicals and especially on camera.
TIYA clients include (aspiring) Broadway performers, Film and TV actors, singer-songwriters, news anchors, dancers, comedians, CEO's all over the world, as well as karaoke enthusiasts, and songwriting hobbyists.

For Singing, as a vocal technician/trainer I am like going to the gym for your voice. My exercises are safe, simple, and most importantly, I teach you how to practice correctly.
For ACTing, we can explore both the foundation itself with monologues and scenes, as well as the tricks of the trade mastering the camera frame and how to create memorable auditions for TV/Film.
For Songwriting, we can explore the fundamentals of both lyrics and music, as well as catchy hooks, production, and song structure.
You may use my time however you wish (Voice, Acting, Songwriting, or Artistic/Career guidance).
Most vocal sessions will usually be a combination of strengthening/ conditioning exercises, and then exploring/performing a song.
Most ACTing sessions will be theatre monologues, TV/Film sides and/or On camera auditioning craft.

What happens in a Lesson? In order to train your physical voice, it is necessary to do vocal exercises, in the same way that one needs to train at a gym. There is no "magic key" to unlock one's voice; it is a matter of daily practice and muscle strengthening/stretching. So, the first part of the lesson will be focused on vocal exercises specifically tailored to YOUR VOICE and its needs. The second half of the lesson is the fun part- SINGING! We will work on any songs and styles that YOU choose. Whether you want to sing Rock, Country, Pop, Musical Theater, or Classical, there is a healthy and communicative way to sing!

Andrea completed her Masters of Music at The Manhattan School of Music in 2013. Prior to MSM, Andrea received her Bachelors of Music in Jazz Studies from Michigan State University and attended the prestigious high school at the Duke Ellington School of the Arts in Washington D.C. where she majored in classical voice and piano.
Andrea received her Masters of Music Education from Columbia Teacher's College in 2017.
Andrea released her debut album âDhyanaâ in 2011. She also sings for a French Gypsy-Jazz band, a neo-rock band, and a Nigerian
In addition to performing, Andrea is also a passionate educator. She has run her private voice and piano studio for 10 years and also teaches at The Larchmont Music Academy, Compass Arts, and Victoria Children's Group nursery in New York.
In the fall of 2013, Andrea and her band traveled to Mumbai, India to serve as the inaugural faculty at the True School of Music for four months. Andrea served as Head of the Vocal Department. The faculty taught young adults age 17-21.

I believe lessons should be fun and that the most important thing about music education is passing on and encouraging a love for music. Especially with young children, I am flexible and teach a broad range of musical skills to help keep the student interested and engaged.
For both voice and piano study, I believe in finding your own sound and am willing to work with you on whatever musical style you are drawn to, but I am a big advocate of learning proper technique, regardless of the genre.
Lessons will spend time working on both technique and repertoire. Students are encouraged to bring in music that they want to learn. If a student is not sure of what song or style he/she wants to work on, I have plenty of books to choose from. We'll discover what you love together!

For younger students, we will do a more general music/singing lesson as the vocal chords are simply not fully developed yet.
Ages 4 and up.
For younger students (ages 4-10), I recommend 1/2 hour lessons. 45 minute lessons work well for ages 10-12.
Full hour lessons are recommended for students age 12 and up
*For lessons at home lessons (your home), a piano or keyboard (3 octaves at least) is required. I use it to accompany vocal students as well.

I followed singing lessons in Belgium, in Italy and had at least 7 teachers before, but only Andrea could explain me in a way I could understand how our voice works. She is patience, very well informed and trained. She looks at you as a person and adapts her teaching to your person.

OTHER LESSON INFORMATION
SINGING: Bel Canto singing technique for the modern singer is taught in private and group classes. No one sounds like old opera singers, even if the student wants to sing opera. Students are allowed to choose most of the material they learn in the lesson. There will be times when Rachel will suggest a song to a student but if the student doesn't enjoy the song, they will work as a team to find a song that does work for the student. Gain a better tone quality, complete control of your voice, bigger range, more flexibility, and confidence. Learn healthy voice technique, how to fully take care of your own voice so you can sing for the rest of your life (even after lessons), and become a self sufficient performer for life.
ACTING: Stella Adler, Stanislavsky, Chekhov, and Meisner Acting Technique for Theatre/Camera is taught in private and group classes. All students are exposed to each technique and Rachel sees which technique each student responds to the most. Once the student and Rachel are able to identify the technique, Rachel continues to use the terminology of that technique for the remainder of the time the student is in lessons. Students eventually are able to play roles truthfully and realistically, even if the roles are opposite of the student's own personality.
BY THE TIME STUDENTS GRADUATE FROM LESSONS:
1. Gain a lifelong, solid, consistent, and healthy technique that they can always count on in practice and performance.
2. Gain specific technical and personal notes in a notebook and/or computer file that is organized and always accessible for review.
3. Gain artistry, performance skills, and a strong voice that will look/sound authentic; Singers will sound appropriate to whatever style of music they are singing. (No fake sound or look.) Actors will just be in the moment and truthful whether they are on stage or in front of the camera.
4. Gain the confidence to always put on a great performance.

MISSED LESSONS/MAKE UPS:
If the student needs to miss a lesson for sickness, they or their parent/ guardian, if the student is under 18, must let Rachel know at least 24 hours before their missed lesson. If they need to miss due to an other activity or vacation, they must contact Rachel at least a week from their next scheduled lesson in advance to prevent from forfeiting the lesson. All make ups will be scheduled within 4 weeks from the missed lesson. If rescheduled lesson or make up lesson is missed, no new make up will be given unless Rachel is not able to teach for some rare reason.
If a student is going to be late they need to contact Rachel as soon as possible, to let her know they will be late. Lessons will end on time unless she is able to extend the lesson due to a late student or her schedule allows for it though please understand, Rachel would be extending a courtesy and would not be obligated to do so. If on the rare occasion Rachel is running late, she will always make up the time.
SITTING IN: Parents/Guardians are ONLY permitted to stay for the first lesson and are NOT permitted to sit in for any other lesson/class unless invited. This is to promote good/strong teacher-student relationship quickly and easily. Also, many times students feel more comfortable when their parents/guardians leave.

Justin Pollinger is a vocal coach, singer, performer, and educator based out of Jersey City, NJ.
During his high school years, Justin discovered his passion for music and education. Kenneth Brown, his former choral teacher, and mentor recognized Justin's untapped potential. Justin has spent 14 years studying under some of the best vocal coaches in New York and New Jersey, including Sarah Bachman Krieger (Manhattan School of Music, The Juilliard School), Steven Schnurman (The Juilliard School) and; Katherine Wessinger (University of Michigan). He currently studies under Melissa Perry (Westminster Choir College, Temple, and post-graduate work included 750 hours with Maestro Vittorio Rosetta of La Scala) While doing studies at Westminster Choir College, he studied with Tenor Eric Rieger (Eastman School of Music).
Justin founded and directed The A Cappella Choir of Middlesex County. After a successful first year and a full-length album, The A Cappella Choir sang at Carnegie Hall for the premiere of Eric Whitacre's electronic opera "Paradise Lost: Shadows and Wings"
Justin was the head of the choral department at the New Dover United Methodist Church in Edison, NJ. He directed and musically directed production's of The Rocky Horror Show at the Villagers Theater in Somerset, which subsequently moved to The Den Nightclub and ran for 2 consecutive years.
Justin has organized, directed and performed in fundraisers for the Edison high school Choral program, the program that first honed his raw talent and a place that to this day he still can call a home.
As a performer, Justin was seen as a backup singer in the Bryan Hansen band. He has participated in theater all over NJ and is frequently hired for studio session work. He recently contributed backing vocals for Mike Wells' upcoming third studio album.
Justin has been teaching privately since 2007 (Justin Pollinger Vocal Studio). His Students have been accepted to some of the top music programs in the country including Westminster Choir College, Boston Conservatory, Cincinnati Conservatory of Music, Oberlin Conservatory, Mason Gross School School of the Arts, The Hart School and AMDA.

As far as logistics go, I have both driven and taken the subway to get to her house. She lives super close to the L train (maybe a 2 or 3 minute walk?) and there is usually adequate parking nearby. Her home is lovely and the backroom where the piano is has incredible acoustics. I could sing there for hours!! Her cute pup Waka is also a nice addition/perk to the overall environment :)

I am a New York City based young professional recording artist, performer, songwriter, and vocal coach . I have a BFA performance degree in Music Theater, and have performed through Europe as well as the United States.
I have worked with Artists such as Christian Knoll (Broadway), Carlos Alomar (Grammy Award Winning), Chris Young (Real Housewives-Bravo), Constantine Pappas (Phantom of The Opera), Peter Bliss (NYC Songwriters Collective), and many others.
Some of my work has also been featured on the Billboard Charts. As a craftsman I am always working on my craft, and looking to collaborate and help others work on their craft.
As a teacher I have a strong foundation in teaching kids ages 5-18, and have worked with many young adults ranging in their mid twenties.

My degree is in Music Theater, and I have a strong passion for it. However, I also have a deep passion for contemporary Pop music, and would love to coach students interested in both realms. I do have an understanding of many genres, and can help any student find their true voice, and through that be the best singer they can be.

My 10 year old daughter Spencer has been wanting to take a lesson for so long she's always singing Disney songs around the house, and finally I thought, why not give it a go.
When I first met Adam his smile was infectious, and I could already tell he knew what he was doing, and this was the right choice.
He sat down at the piano we have at home, and began doing scale work, within minutes time, I could already see that Emily was already enjoying the lesson.
They worked learning "For the First Time In Forever" together, and Emily now sings both parts, and very well/on pitch might I add.
Spencer takes lessons from Adam bi weekly, and is always anxious for him to come and share his knowledge with her.

I had one lesson with Adam, and now take lessons with him multiple times a month. He has not only helped me gain confidence in my vocal ability, but continues to provide fantastic training, and I feel my voice getting stronger with each lesson. I had no idea that I had an upper register, nor did I understand what that meant prior to working with Adam.
I can proudly say I am finding my voice more and more everyday.

My approach to teaching voice first starts with listening to your goals as a singer. I then personalize your lessons to reach those goals, using tools from the vocal toolbox as I call it -- which includes physical alignment, breathing, vocal placement, relaxation techniques -- as well as repertoire guidance! I tailor vocal exercises to the individual student, aiming to strengthen and focus tone, improve control and release tongue and jaw tension.
I also act as a supportive mentor working with singers to prep for auditions or performances. I give techniques to get over nerves, and help students emotionally connect to the music while improving body language and connection to the breath.
