About Paul
Paul M is an American born, New York-based Piano teacher, Vocal coach, Pianist, Composer and Artist. As an educator, Paul is part of The Suffolk Piano Teachers Forum, College Music Society and Music Teachers National. He has been an Adjunct-instructor at New York University (NYU). Paul also conducts master classes and seminars in The United states and South America. For the past few years, he has implemented classes in composition and music history in the coastal area of Ecuador and New York. His music studio in New York City is in high demand. In 2006, he received a Bachelor Degree of Music from Stony Brook University.
As a Pianist, In 2006 Paul was a prizewinner at the Music Club of Douglaston Piano Competition. For two consecutive years, Paul was awarded The Suffolk County Piano Forum Prize. XLNT Music recently wrote, “Paul is a fine pianist that performs with superb pianism and great sensitivity.”
 His recent public performances include Ecuador South America, Steinway Hall NYC, The United Nations, Faust Harrison Hall, Saint Peters NYC and The Staller Center. Paul has performed with The Stony Brook Symphony Orchestra and The New York University Symphony Orchestra. He has studied with well-known piano teachers including: Martin Canin, Morey Ritt, Tina Dahl, and Anita Gelber. In 2011 he released a record consisting of his performance of original compositions for solo piano that is available in bookstores and on iTunes.
As a composer Paul has composed music for the feature film Documentary Between the Shades, directed by Jill Salvino and premiered at the Soho International Film Festival in 2017. In 2014, Paul was the composer for the radio show Ackerman Associates Meets Dracula written and directed by Peter Stass. In 2014 he wrote the score for, Lies People Tell, a short film that premiered at the san pedro film festival. In 2011, he released his first solo record Succession of images, a song cycle for solo piano. In 2017, he released his second record Hope, a chamber music work recorded with clarinetist Thomas Piercy and Violinist Patrisa Tomassini. Recent public piano performances of his music include Ecuador in South America, Steinway Hall NYC, The United Nations, Spectrum NYC, Faust Harrison Hall, Saint Peters in NYC and The Staller Center in Stony Brook NY.

As an artist, Paul is known for creating large instillations, paintings and live performing art pieces. From 2014-2016, he was the artist in residence at Spectrum Gallery in NYC. In 2014, he completed the Elevator Time Machine, a large instillation made of elevator parts that responds to sound. He also wrote and produced a 20 minute live art piece called Static in Movement for piano and video. His acrylic on canvas works have also been presented at Spectrum NYC, The Art Bar, The Gallery at Logos and Ward-Nasse gallery.

From a lot of experience with beginner piano students, both young and adults, I have been able to find a regimen of piano teaching that combines time efficiency with fun. While working with intermediate to advanced students, I have had coached them to apply and get accepted into some of the top Universities and Conservatories in the country. My students, beginner intermediate and advanced levels, have been awarded for their performances and activities in schools and competitions.
I am also a composition teacher. I work with composition students from beginner to advance. My composition students, over the years, range from all ages starting at 7. My students, after the first year, have been able to write string quartets and piano trios. My advanced students have entered competitions all over the country and are very successful in their composition practice. Some of their compositions have been performed in famous concert halls and schools.
As a vocal coach, I work with students of all ages. The repertoire that I recommend to beginner students includes Disney, Broadway and classical music. For intermediate and advanced vocal student, I have successfully prepared them for competitions, Broadway and University auditions as well as personal enjoyment.
Most recently I held a piano, composition and vocal recital for my students at the world famous Steinway Hall in New York City. I believe that some students work better when there is motivation for performance activities. For that reason I host these type of events. Students that decide they want to take place in these events perform among all levels. I offer these performance opportunities as an invitation. Each student has a choice as to whether they would like to perform.

Kevin will help you unlock the potential in your voice and get you to a place of confidence while singing

I can't recommend Kevin enough, especially for someone like me, who's returning to voice lessons after many years. Kevin has debunked the prior myths I had about the voice and singing and I now feel confident to sing after a few warm ups and an hour of being awake and talking. Kevin has really simplified the singing process for me while also teaching me techniques that keep singing challenging and invigorating. My voice is the strongest, most authentic, and most consistent its ever been and I definitely owe that to training with Kevin.

A creative, patient, and talented teacher

I started singing when I first entered college, and I fell in love with it. My only problem was that I didn't have the experience or the knowledge on how to develop my voice. I have always wanted to be on stage singing and acting in musical theatre shows, but I didn't think I had the talent for it. Kevin helped to change this for me.

Kevin took me under his wing and right away my voice began to improve. I had a richer, deeper resonance and I started to be able to find control over my voice, my flexibility and range increased, and I started to find the carefree, easy singing voice that people strive towards.

Lessons with Kevin were always enjoyable. He is one of the most supportive people I know, and he has a way of making you feel good about yourself even if your voice is cracking or being uncooperative. I remember one time, I went to sing an F above the staff and my voice just broke completely and some really terrible sound came out. All Kevin said was, "There's that frog!" and we laughed it off and continued with the lesson.

One of the best aspects of Kevin's teaching is his ability to explain concepts clearly. He provides many different viewpoints for addressing issues with the voice and can clearly articulate solutions to your specific vocal needs.

In addition to being able to teach well, Kevin is also a very talented singer. He uses a lot of vocal models in his lessons (which only enhanced his ability to communicate concepts clearly), and I was always blown a way with how rich and resonant his voice was. I envied his ability to transition smoothly throughout all the ranges of the voice.

I know that I was not Kevin's easiest student to teach, but thanks to him I now have the confidence and the skill to get up in front of people and sing my heart out, and actually sound good! Last summer I landed the role of Rolf in our community theatre production of The Sound of Music. This would not have been possible without Kevin.

I learned more in 2 years than all of my years in singing

I started taking voice lessons with Kevin when I was a Junior in college. I had been seeing a voice teacher in NYC who had worked for years with many professional singers on Broadway. So, I wasn't sure what to expect when I started working with a grad student from the school of music (which mostly focuses on classical voice). I wanted to learn about classical voice but, I mostly wanted to continue working on musical theatre songs. So, I wasn't sure how much I could learn from a grad student who was young and learning about voice himself.

Kevin exceeded my expectations. On my first day with Kevin, I was nervous because all of my voice teachers in the past had been strict and would even occasionally yell at me. So, I could never fully be comfortable at a voice lesson because I had always been afraid to make mistakes. Kevin puts you at ease right away with his friendly and bubbly demeanor. He encourages you to give it your all and applauds mistakes and cracks because it means you are trying and getting to a new place in your voice that you're not used to. Kevin wanted to work on what I wanted to work on, however, he was also able to teach me things I had never been taught before with my old teacher like newer concepts and simply how to sing with a richer voice. Kevin was able to help me with all kinds of singing as he is trained in musical theatre, classical, and opera.

I knew I could also count on Kevin because of how honest he would be with me. He would tell me his honest thoughts about my work and any shows he came to see me in. I valued Kevin's opinion because he was ALWAYS straightforward with me.

Not only was Kevin a great teacher but, he was SO supportive of me. Kevin came to my rehearsals and performances to give me tips on how I could improve my performance and coached me on characterization singing. He even agreed to meet with me outside of our normal lessons if I ever needed help with an audition piece.

I could honestly go on and on about how wonderful Kevin was and I am so sad that I can no longer have him as my voice teacher due to distance. However, the things Kevin has taught me will always stay with me and I am sure I will use everything he has taught me for years to come.

I HIGHLY recommend Kevin R. as a voice teacher. No matter what kind of singer you want to be or how experienced or trained you are Kevin will meet your personal needs to help you reach your goals. Voice
I am an empathetic teacher, sensitive to the students individual process of learning. My singing lessons usually start with breathing and relaxation exercises. Vocal exercise come next, then when the student is fully warmed up, we will begin to work on songs. It is important that the student be part of the process of picking material since the more they personally respond to the material the more apt they are to be engaged in their lessons and the more quickly they will learn. After three to six months they will understand the fundamentals of breathing and relaxation and its importance to proper vocal training. They will have begun the process of extending their range and will understand the principles of performance in song.
Acting
As an acting teacher and coach, I tailor my classes to the needs of each student. I utilize improvisatory and sensory techniques to help unleash spontaneity. I also encourage the students to use their personal experiences as a way to access a full range of emotions. I enjoy working with the student on script analysis, so as to discover the underlying motivations of the character the student is working on.
Creative and Lyric Writing
I use prompts as a way to get the student writing. Often, I will ask the student to write for stretches of time without editing themselves. It is important to unleash imagination before beginning the process of editing. Many times it is the unexpected that is the must compelling.

While there I taught lessons and group workshops on singing, acting and general performance to students ages 5 through high school. Since then I have worked with young students on a regular basis in both private lessons and working with music outreach programs in New York schools. In addition to building musical skills, I find that performing and studying music gives children a sense of accomplishment and confidence in their lives.

*** Lesson Details ***
The style and pace of my lessons are tailored to each individual student. I bring structure to the lessons, but work at the speed that is comfortable for you. It is my ultimate goal to give you the tools and the confidence to learn and perform music on your own. Most importantly we make the most of our time together for whichever length of lesson you choose.

Each lesson generally starts with a physical and vocal warm up. This is followed by vocal exercises (arpeggios, scales, and various other exercises that will develop flexibility and also breath control in the voice, as well as expanding the vocal range). The last part of the lesson will most often focus on a song or piece of music as we incorporate the technical and artistic elements we have worked on thus far.

Expectations:

Depending on the level of the student we will begin with the basics: pitch matching, simple vocal exercises, and standard songs. After a few months of lessons students should expect to have the skills to move on to more difficult vocalizes and advanced songs. All that we do in our lessons will have an emphasis on singing in the most healthy way for your voice.

We will work on intonation, rhythm, style, diction and projection. We will also do audition and performance preparation. I will give the you exercises to take home and work on between lessons.

We will have fun and learn a lot in the comfortable and energetic setting that I create!

*** Studio Equipment ***
Private in-home studio: Separate studio with electric piano, music stand, several chairs, music books, mirrors, speakers and open space for us to work in!

There is a separate living room/waiting room where parents/caretakers are welcomed to wait while their student is in their lesson. Parents/caretakers are also welcomed to sit in on all or part of lesson in the studio.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I will bring music repertoire books that we might be using. I would expect them to have a keyboard or piano.

*** Specialties ***
I am classically trained, but have studied pedagogy pertaining to many different types of singing. I work with many singers of Opera and Musical Theater. I also have a lot of experience working with singers who are in bands and play instruments (guitar, bass, drums, ukulele, keyboards) while they are singing. I find this provides an entirely new set of challenges for the singer and feel that I have found efficient and successful ways of negotiating this. I also teach students of jazz and folk music and work with singer-songwriters on getting the best of themselves on their original pieces.

Rebecca is a wonderful vocal teacher with an incredibly warm personality that puts me at ease at encourages me to enjoy the practice of singing. During lessons, she explains each exercise very clearly and always knows the right advice to give when I am having trouble grasping a concept. Julia has been teaching private voice for over 10 years. In 2006, she opened her private voice studio in Austin, TX where she completed her Graduate studies at The University of Texas. She now resides and teaches in Bergen County, New Jersey. *** Lesson Details ***
What happens in a Lesson? In order to train your physical voice, it is necessary to do vocal exercises, in the same way that one needs to train at a gym. There is no "magic key" to unlock one's voice; it is a matter of daily practice and muscle strengthening/stretching. So, the first part of the lesson will be focused on vocal exercises specifically tailored to YOUR VOICE and its needs. The second half of the lesson is the fun part- SINGING! We will work on any songs and styles that YOU choose. Whether you want to sing Rock, Country, Pop, Musical Theater, or Classical, there is a healthy and communicative way to sing!

I provide a keyboard. The student should provide a recording device, iPhone, etc.

Professional Bio:

A recipient of the prestigious Lenore Annenberg Fellowship in the Arts, baritone Alex made his Vancouver Opera debut in the 2017 season as the title role in Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro, and will debut the role of Il Conte in the same opera in the 17/18 season with Opera Naples. Formerly a member of the ensembles of Theater Basel and Opernhaus Zürich, Alex made his European debut in Switzerland singing The Hunter in Rusalka, Moralès in Carmen and L’Ami in Debussy’s rarely performed La Chute de la Maison Usher. Since then, he went on to make several further role debuts in Zürich, including Silvio in Pagliacci under Alexander Vedernikov, Ned Keene in Peter Grimes under Erik Nielsen, and the three baritone roles of Bohuslav Martinu’s rarely performed Juliette, under Fabio Luisi.

Previous noteworthy engagements included his principal role debut with the Glimmerglass Festival in Cooperstown, NY, singing Belfiore in Verdi’s King For a Day, of which the New York Times noted the debut of a “sensational” new talent. In 2014, Alex performed in a high profile gala concert for the 85th Anniversary of the Ópera de Bellas Artes alongside legendary tenor Franzisco Araiza, soprano Maria Katzarava and bass Eric Halfvarson. He made his Lucerne Festival debut as Don Quixote in Manuel De Falla’s El Retable del Maese Pedro conducted by Clement Power, performed as the baritone soloist in Mendelssohn’s Die Erste Walpurghisnacht with the Orchestra Symphonique de Mulhouse, and debuted the role of Sam in Bernstein’s Trouble in Tahiti for the opening festival of Opernhaus Zürich’s 2012/13 season.

A 2007 B.M. graduate of Northwestern University, Alex received an Artist Diploma from the Academy of Vocal Arts in 2011, and has been a top prizewinner in several major international competitions.

Not only is Alex a kind, patient, and encouraging teacher, but he also presents valuable technical information in a clear and comprehensible manner. I leave each lesson feeling vocally fresh and with new nuggets of vocal wisdom to think about during the week.

I also feel that I can apply the vocal technique Alex teaches to the many different genres of music that I sing (opera, musical theater, gospel, etc.)
