Every student is different; therefore there is no one method or strategy that will work universally. I create tailored lesson plans for each student taking into account age, experience, personality and learning style. Lessons can include ear training, music history, harmony, sight reading and improvisation depending on the level and goal of the student. When working with young children, I typically use games and activities and follow Mimi Zweig’s principle of violin teaching, which is based on natural physical motions nurtured in a non-judgmental environment. This pedagogy uses the Suzuki repertoire but can also be used with other books. The Suzuki method is one of the most popular in the US. This method establishes strong musical and technical fundamentals. Other methods lead to similar results and can be just as enjoyable and interesting.
For older children and adults, I choose appropriate repertoire based on their musical interests, while still focusing on technique. Typically ...

Lydia is an excellent violin teacher. She has a very gentle, patient demeanor which is so important when working with kids. My daughter started lessons just after turning 5, and though her focus was not always there, Lydia always found ways to keep her learning and engaged. 6 months later, my daughter is much more focused and already playing songs and starting to read music. I think it's important to note that Lydia is very organized, always on time, professional, and pleasant to work with. Very highly recommend!

I began violin as an adult. Cameron has always made certain lessons are at my level. If a technique needs more work, we focus on that. I always leave a lesson feeling like I am learning, and knowing I will continue to progress.

Cameron is great and really wants his students to learn violin the correct way. I tend to want to take shortcuts and he encourages me to learn the foundation and work from there.

Hello! I am a Baltimore-based violist studying at the Peabody Institute of Music. My primary goal in teaching viola is to help people make progress as efficiently as possible, with whatever intensity feels right for them. I encourage scales and a small technical regimen for sound production and conditioning, to go alongside practicing repertoire using a method that makes it simple to play cleanly and expressively.
Understanding the logic great compositions are built with is essential for making that music truly come to life, so I am a big proponent of teaching music theory as a part of lessons. For beginning students, developing a good musical ear and enjoying exploring the possibilities of the viola always comes first.

Ryan
I started my violin lessons with Brian during my sophomore year of high school and continued with him through my senior year. He immediately began working with me on the music I had received from being in the Capital High School Orchestra. Throughout my years with Brian, we worked on perfecting many solos, creating beautiful ensembles, and enhancing my knowledge of music theory. Brian provided me a perfect transition as I moved from playing in high school orchestra to making music in my personal life. Whether you an absolute beginner or have been playing for years, I would absolutely recommend taking lessons from Brian! He is an amazing teacher, working with you every step of the way in pursuing your dreams in music, whatever they might be.

Brian is a great and patient teacher. He listens to me and pushes me when he knows that I can do better. He is super talented, super nice, and he has a good sense of humor. 10 out of 10 would recommend.

"My daughter started taking online voila lessons with Nikita, and because this was our first experience with online lessons, we weren’t sure about what to expect. Turns out, my daughter started improving on all of the skills she hadn’t mastered. This growth started very quickly after lessons, thanks to Nikita! Through years of playing, she has never learned to acquire these skills, and after two or three lessons she had fully conprehended them. Nikita helped her so much!"

I went to him for some feedback on my orchestra excerpts before a big audition I was worried for and he had really great advice not only about the music itself but approaching auditions mentally and physically. He also demonstrated a lot of them and his playing was simply inspiring. If you want to really learn how to play viola, Michael is your guy!"

"It was our first lesson with Charles for my 9 year old son. We finally found the right instructor! Without being condescending, he taught my son some basics about holding the instrument correctly, how to bring it up for play.... essentially proper playing etiquette that he is not getting at school from a teacher who is far too stretched with a large class of multiple instruments and only ONE teacher. (She really needs an assistant) I think he is going to learn a LOT and I love that he corrects him without being rude nor condescending. I would give him 5 stars but it's our first lesson. Will review again after a month and hopefully gloat some more about him! :) ~ Very pleased!"

"Megan is so pleasant and fun! She has strong focus on technique, and explains these practices in a way I can understand. Since I am a beginner, and adult learner, it's important that my music teacher is patient and cheers me along throughout the process - Megan definitely has that gift. I also appreciate that she writes down technique tips and exercises for me to practice at home (so I remember what she taught me in class.) I'm looking forward to continuing to learn from Megan, and play music beautifully on my Viola one day."
