I just finished a series of online upright bass lessons with Dr. Norman. It's wonderful to have a lesson without toting the bass around town. Dr. Norman is impressive in skill and knowledge. There was nothing musically he didn't know, couldn't explain, or demonstrate on the bass. He has a keyboard at hand to play chords or emphasize a particular key, and he is proficient on that too. Dr. Norman is A++.

Experienced in classical, jazz, and various other styles and genres. If you want to develop excellent technique and dexterity with a fun and laid-back yet knowledgeable and motivating teacher, you've come to the right place!

About Liana
My name is Liana, and I am a freelance double bassist, music instructor, and music administrator. I have been playing music for nearly my entire life, starting on piano at the age of five and moving on to learn other instruments as the years progressed. I have performed with various orchestras, chamber groups, musical theater pit ensembles, jazz big bands and combos, on studio recording sessions, and more.

I have collaborated with artists such as John Clayton; Wayne Wallace; Mic Gillette and Lenny Williams (of "Tower of Power"; and many more. I have also performed at the Monterey Jazz Festi
val, the Montreaux Jazz Festival, the San Francisco War Memorial Opera House, the Valley Performing Arts Center, on the Battleship USS Iowa, and at Yoshi's Jazz Club in Oakland, CA.

I have served as principal bassist with the CSUN Symphony and the Dragon Singers Orchestra, and as substitute principal bassist of the Westlake Village Symphony. I have also performed as a member of the CSUN Jazz "C"‚Äč Band on double bass; the Jazzschool Studio Band on double bass; Tenth Muse on double bass, vocals, and ukulele; as a founding member of the band Polyhymnia on electric bass; and on ukulele with the band Noble Creatures.

I grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area, where I studied under Pat Klobas. My further studies continued in Los Angeles under Oscar Meza and Gary Pratt. I received my B.A. in Music Breadth Studies from California State University, Northridge in 2016.

All lessons are incredibly flexible and are tailored to each student's needs, abilities, and goals! If you have a book you've already been working from and want to continue with, great! If you don't like working from a book at all, also great! I am by no means strict, but together we will work hard to you craft your technique to maximize your potential!

I look forward to the possibility of meeting and working with you!

I have studied upright bass for 20 years. I am classically trained and studied under Barry Lieberman, former assistant principal of the Los Angeles Philharmonic. I went on to study jazz at the prestigious William Paterson University. I then spent the next 13 years gigging and teaching in a variety of situations in New York City and now Los Angeles. I have played a full spectrum of music on the upright and love to impart that knowledge to my students!

About Kellen
I believe this is a great time to be a musician. I have come of age as a musician in a time when music making and the music industry have shifted dramatically. There are many positives in this shift, with new oppurtinites opening up for musicians. I also see these changes not being addressed in music education. There are many things I wish I would've been taught when I was younger that would have accelerated my growth, and I love using that knowledge to accelerate my student's growth. I teach tonal harmony (as you'd learn in music school), focus on groove and rhythm (which is commonly neg
lected in music school), and an awareness of new technology (which was ignored when I was in music school). I believe because no matter which direction you are coming from, you will come to this intersection making music in this era.

I had been playing guitar for a while, mostly learning songs and chord changes on my own. I wanted to take lessons to work on composing my own songs, and this is where Kellen really helped me. He had a lot of ideas and suggestions that were really helpful in trying to create a unique composing style. He's a trained musician, and it shows when he helps me with music theory and exposing me to lots of different styles of music.

I have been playing Upright bass for 18 years, and started my career with the bass while still in college teaching and freelancing. I primarily play in orchestral settings, in small string groups, orchestra pits, and larger orchestras such as the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra and the New West Symphony. I have played bass in big bands, as well as played and sang in folk groups. I have had years of formal arco training and could help you improve this if you want. Bass is my passion, and it brings me great joy to share my passion with inquiring minds. With my instruction, you will have all you need to get rolling, or get better at what you already know and conquer your goals as a musician and steady bassist. It's all about that bass so lets make it happen!!!

About Carla
I have been teaching music and playing live for over 15 years professionally. I teach students how to learn on their own and practice efficiently. I can teach you how to simply play well enough to lead a campfire singalong, or to audition for college, or a potential job. Lessons catered to students learning styles, goals and needs. Patient and fun for kids or adults. Lets make some music!!

Carla was my very first bass instructor over 20 years ago. As a teenager I remember being so in awe of her skill on the guitar and the stringed instrument and her knowledge of music as a whole.
Watching and listening to her play was one of the main reasons I first decided I wanted to play in a band and she took me from an absolute beginner who knew nothing, to being able to jam with people, rehearse with a band, and even to playing on stage.
Carla's teaching and passion for music was so influential for me and really laid the foundation for what would lead me through several different band opportunities from original music to cover bands and all sorts of styles of music. Music has been and will always be a passion and a hobby of mine but also has been a source of income and all of that is only possible because of Carla. I am so grateful and whenever someone asks how I got started playing bass I always mention my awesome neighbor who lived down the street and taught me so much of what I know about music.
I highly recommend taking lessons from this true professional, incredibly talented musician, and genuinely good person who strives to impact people and the world around her. She's definitely one of the best!

There are teachers who teach the skills and techniques needed to learn and master an instrument, and then there are those that live, breathe and passionately pursue an understanding of an instrument: it's history, it's purpose, it's boundaries, and beyond. Carla is most assuredly the latter, and lives her life in pursuit of consistently bettering herself and those around her musically, but also emotionally, physically and spiritually.

Carla's ability to embrace music, beyond her mind, but into her soul allows her to pass along instruction and teaching that goes beyond mere knowledge, and delves into the heart and power of music's ability to move us in ways so far deeper than "enjoying it."

With so much extensive professional experience, and a full pursuit of life, health and wellness, there is no better teacher you could consider. I recommend Carla, without reservation, to anyone considering any of the many instruments she's so proficient in.

Thank you, Carla, for changing my life through music!

My 11yr son has been taking lessons with Jonathan for almost a year now and we could not be more happy with level of instruction that Jonathan provides.

Not only is he an amazing bass player but he's a great mentor to my son as well. Each lesson he finds a way to challenge my son without making him feel overwhelmed. He makes learning fun!
