About Alexander
My name is Alex, and my passion is teaching music. I offer clients a unique learning experience with customized lesson plans and personalized attention to fit your exact goals and needs. These aren’t just words to me…they are a commitment I make to everyone that I have the pleasure of working with.

Here’s who I am…

I earned a Bachelor's of Music from Berklee College of Music where I studied Bass Performance and Composition. I have years of experience playing upright and electric bass in many styles such as rock, jazz, orchestral, and big band. I’ve studied a variety of instruments over the last 20 years including guitar, bass, drums, ukulele, and piano.

Here’s what I can do for you…

I will give you my full attention and unyielding patience with each and every lesson. Together we will explore the principals of music that
will enable you to learn to play in any style you choose to study. Ultimately my job is not to teach you to play, but to show you how to teach yourself. I will arm you with a thorough understanding of technique and theory.

I love working with kids and adults. I love brand new players with no experience as well as seasoned players who just want to fill in some gaps in their knowledge. Whatever your age, and wherever you’re at with your playing, I hope you will give me the chance to help you have more fun and confidence in music.

Every player I work with gets access to a personal online Lesson Journal where you can see my notes from our lessons, do homework from your “Stuff to work on” lists, and access my entire digital library! Every lesson is designed just for you.

Let’s get started…

You can take lessons at my studio, in your home, or online via Skype.

For lessons in my studio, I can provide instruments and amplifiers for both of us.

There is ample seating for parents to sit in on lessons. Parking is available in the driveway.

You’re going to love your lessons!
-Alex

Classical, jazz, rock, sight reading, ear training, music theory, improv, scales/arpeggio training.

About Susan
Hi, my name is Sue L. I perform professionally with Cascade Chamber Orchestra (classical) and Mango Nights (World Music and Jazz). I've been teaching all strings and piano for about 20 years. In the first few lessons students learn how to get get big, beautiful tone by learning various bowing techniques that are easy to learn with a little daily practice.

Then I teach how to read music and play songs in a variety of styles: Gypsy, classical, bluegrass, contemporary classical, rock and more. The album I use for this is a beginning book called VIP Strings composed by my mentor Dr. Lyons. The book comes with a play along piano accompaniment CD that makes practicing fun! Along with this I teach music fundamentals like scales, music theory and ear training.

For more serious students, I use materials from the Associated Board of the
Royal Schools of Music and prepare them for one to two exams a year. The exams test playing abilities on 3 songs plus scales, arpeggios, ear training and music theory. Students that pass get a beautiful certificate for each level, grades 1 to 8.

I earned my music degree from Portland State University in 2006, graduating with honors. In 1996 I won two Medals of Distinction for violin performance and music theory and then in 2001 I received a Merit Award from the Associated Board of the Royal School of Music, London, England for viola performance. I've been blessed to be able to perform in a variety of ensembles and genres such as musical theater pit orchestras, string quartets, the Vancouver Symphony, and rock, jazz, tango, Middle Eastern and blue grass/folk bands.

My biggest thrill is to be able to transmit culture to the younger generation through music.

*** Lesson Details ***
I offer the following for my violin, viola, cello, bass and piano students. Most of all, it is the joy of music making that I want to share with my students.

Private and group lessons
Two recitals a year
Special performance opportunities throughout the year
Classical, jazz, fiddle, rock, tango, sacred, Celtic, folk
Music theory
Customized lesson plans using various methods old and new

I endeavor to provide a fun, non intimidating environment for students while motivating them to achieve their highest potential by providing many performance opportunities throughout the year. Some of my students have appeared as special guests with my band, Mango Nights.

Included with weekly private lessons are once a month group lessons where students can learn essential ensemble skills and have fun meeting other students.

Beginning students learn several simple songs that teach great tone and rhythm using classical, folk, blues, rock, ragtime, bluegrass. Students learn concepts such as syncopation, rhythm, note reading, articulations, dynamics, asymmetrical time meters and and more. Each book comes with a CD with piano accompaniment which makes practicing at home enjoyable.

Students are gradually introduced to scales, arpeggios, music theory, ear training and sight reading. All this works together to produce "the complete musician". The complete musician is a person who has excellent rhythm, pitch, note reading skills and creativity, a person who can enjoy and appreciate music in it's various forms over a lifetime whether it be for personal enjoyment or as a career.

For more serious students who have the goal of auditioning for university scholarships, top youth orchestras or becoming a professional musician, an accelerated intensive course is available in partnership with the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music. In this program, the student is prepared for a once a year rigorous exam requiring the playing of select pieces, scales and arpeggios, sight reading and ear training. The candidate performs for the visiting Associated Board Examiner from London England and is graded on a point system. Upon passing the student receives a beautiful certificate and additional awards for high scores. Once a year at a separate time, a written exam for music theory is taken. The exams are graded 1 to 8 and can be classical or jazz depending on the candidate's choice.

The main focus is on technique (bowing, fingerings) while covering any classical repertoire. I can also cover jazz, rock/pop if the student wishes.

About Nathan
I have been teaching private lessons for close to 10 years and have been an active performer for even longer, playing in all different types of groups, from rock bands and jazz groups to orchestras and brass bands. I can teach just about any age and skill level and cover anything you are interested in learning; whether its a certain style, genre, technique or song.

I went into banjo lessons not knowing if I could master the instrument or not, being nearly 70 years old. While by no means a master (and never going to be), I have learned so much from Sam and he has shown such patience with me. I often leave my lessons wondering how he ever puts up with me - but he does. His encourgement, laid-back style, expertise and knowledge of music (plus theory) and the banjo is impressive. His good nature makes my lessons so much more pleasant. I would say Sam is a a great teacher for both a beginner or an accomplished musician or in between. He likes to talk and demonstrate (nice and slowly if requested) so I would recommend hour-long lessons at first.

Upright bass is my main instrument and the instrument I love most. If you're looking to become a melodic, versatile player then I believe I'm the right teacher for you. Most teachers will start upright bass lessons with slow accompanying exercises, but I want to teach students to play melodically and take active roles in their ensembles. Upright lessons with me focus on learning melodies in a variety of genres, working on the upper register, and building strength and speed in the left hand.

About Ethan
Hello, my name is Ethan. I'm a professional musician living in the DC area. I perform in jazz clubs, concert halls, restaurants and more on upright an electric bass.

My main performance experience is in jazz settings--I've performed with jazz artists like Rufus Reid, Gary Bartz, Steve Turre, and Marshall Keys. Additionally, I've received Outstanding Soloist and Outstanding Small Jazz Combo Awards from Downbeat Magazine.
While the majority of my experience is in jazz settings, I've also taught rock, pop, funk, and gospel styles to electric bassists and classical styles to upright bassists. While at Oberlin I taught bluegrass, funk, jazz, arranging, improv, and classical lessons to 18-40 year olds. My teaching approach focuses on performance--it doesn't matter what style the student is interested in.

Ethan has been the perfect teacher for my kids. They respect him. He gives them praise when it is well-earned, but also constructive comments, which I appreciate. He has set the expectations high and thereby motivated them to work much harder than I would have thought possible. They have improved greatly in just a few months of lessons with him. He is excellent about working on improving their technical skills (scales, making sure they can and are reading the music). Now that they have improved to the extent that they have the reward of playing pieces that sound like "real" music, they are much more enthusiastic about playing. But Ethan showed great patience early on when there wasn't as much enthusiasm. Ethan also has them playing duets with each other and he plays duets with them and jazzes up his part which they really enjoy. This also has the effect of showing them what might be possible some day if they stick with it. Administratively, Ethan always communicates with me about his schedule in advance and has been accommodating about rescheduling lessons when one of us has a conflict. Overall could not be happier and my kids will be sticking with Ethan as long as his schedule has room for us.

I specifically and intentionally approach teaching students the upright bass from a body-centric perspective, utilizing "Deep Listening" concepts. More than anything, though, I'm interested in catering to your individual needs as a student and musician. I'll do whatever I can do to support you in reaching your goal(s) with the upright bass, and try to make the journey to reaching that goal as accessible and exciting as possible!

About Kelley
I've been formally studying music and playing instruments since my first guitar lesson at four years old, when my hands were still too small to play chords on the instrument. Since then, my passion for music has only grown - I've continued to study the guitar, as well as the upright bass, saxophone, and piano, and now hold a BA in Music and German from Hampshire College, as well as an MA in Music Composition from Mills College. I'm currently in the process of applying to PhD programs in Musicology for 2019.

I've been teaching for quite a few years now, and have found that it's another passion of mine. Helping others to learn their own language of music is one of the most emotionally rewarding experiences I've ever been lucky enough to have.

My lessons always start with a focus on listening, and then move outwardly to sounding and mu
sic-making. I'm happy to cater to each individual student's musical goals and needs - so whether you're interested in learning advanced music theory, just learning a few chords on the guitar so that you can play while you sing with friends, or anything in between, I'm more than happy to support you in doing so!

I aim to create as safe a space as possible for folks of all ages, abilities, genders, and identities to explore their musicality.

My students can expect a loving, supportive, and encouraging atmosphere to learn a difficult instrument. We will go through the basics of hand shapes, learn how to navigate the neck with scales, and tunes that make the upright bass approachable.

About Oliver
I specialize in rhythm, attitude, and energy because I feel they are the most important elements that one needs to become a musician. Work ethic is also very close to my heart because by working consistently you gradually become a better musician and a better human--building good practice habits are critical to any musician. A passion for music gets me out of bed in the morning and also keeps me learning.

I got my degree in bass and vocal performance at Knox College. I continue to learn how to better my lessons, my life and my knowledge of music. I taught upright bass, electric bass, guitar, and rock bands at Flatts & Sharpes Music Company for two years. I currently teach upright, electric bass, guitar and rock bands at Rock House in Wilmette.

I am co-manager, upright bass player, and singer for an ambient-folk band, Sedgewick, based
in Chicago. I play upright bass in the Frank Catalano and Jimmy Chamberlin super group, 9 Worlds Ensemble, and Bowmanville.

About Julianna
Dear Student,

I am so excited you want to take music lessons! If you love music, we'll have a lot of fun learning together. My best memories are from playing with friends in band and orchestra. Playing the flute took me to college and to visit Europe, even to meet my best friend and my husband! I love to listen to and teach all kinds of music and can't wait to hear what your favorites are. I studied to be a classical flutist so I play a beautiful silver flute in the orchestra but my husband and I also love popular music. In our group, "Mr & Mrs Music" I play a hot pink flute and he plays an electric cello! We mix classical music, pop, and movie hits and have so much fun performing in our community. I can't wait to meet you and make music together!

Dear Parents,

Thank you for giving your child the gift of music! Even if they don
’t recognize it right away, they are so fortunate to have your support. As the founder and owner of NOVA Music Academy, I believe that children always win when parents and teachers unite to provide support. We hope that by inviting you into the NOVA Music Academy family, your unique child will find joy in learning music and grow to appreciate the deeply expressive power of art for a lifetime.

I can personally attest to the joy that music has brought my life, including full scholarships for a bachelors, master's and doctoral degree and I could never have done it without my amazing flute teachers. I'm looking forward to repaying their investment into the next generation of musicians, I sincerely hope your child is one of them!
