Students can expect a teacher that addresses every single aspect of learning orchestral upright bass: from honing bow technique, to left-hand formation and fingering choices, to reading musical notation, interpreting music and learning rhythm.

My goal is to help students develop a technical foundation on the bass for playing just about any kind of music that they are interested in, and to support students with practicing tips for areas in their playing where they want to improve. My specialty is symphony orchestra training, so I primarily use the Essential Elements for Strings books at the beginning, and then later as students make progress, I begin to introduce standard orchestral repertoire, sonatas, and concertos written for the bass. I have been teaching since August 2016 and so far I have helped students get into All-States, ensembles at the New England Conservatory Preparatory Division, Districts/Regional festivals, youth orchestra programs, and music degree programs at ...

My 11 year old has attended an after school music program in our district for a few years playing the double bass. When Covid hit, she was no longer able to continue learning, but her music teacher recommended her to audition for a selective music program at Berklee College of Music. That's when I reached out to Darren via his website to see if he could work with my child for the 8 week period to prepare for the online audition submission.

Darren worked with her every week on a completely new song, introduced great techniques that enabled her to learn quickly and develop new skills. Those 8 weeks were very productive as my she learned the entire song, did the audition and was accepted into the Berklee music program. Darren is a very knowledgeable and dedicated music instructor and I am grateful to him for helping my daughter get into a selective music program. The online lessons from Darren are exceptional. You will not be disappointed with his instructions.

My son Ethan started working with Darren early this summer after Ethan's previous instructor for 5 years had decided to retire . I was surprised how quickly Ethan was bonded with Darren in this virtual setting. Due to Covid 19, all lessons have been conducted via Skype. Here is what Ethan was talking about Darren. "I have nothing but good words to say about my experience with Mr. Sacks. within a few weeks, I improved a lot. He was able to help me fix fundamental issues with my playing. He was also incredibly kind and patient with me. Mr. Sacks was also always able to explain things well and give me new ways to improve my playing. He doesn't let go of my mistakes but very encouraging when providing advice."

Karen was not prepared for the lesson. She spent 15 minutes trying to send me photos from a beginner Tabla book available on Amazon. She did not own a set of Tabla drums. She ensured me she could teach anything, but could not pronounce the words used for proper Tabla technique, knew no history and could not even teach me to tune. She literally was reading out of the book figuring it out along the way. I lost a lot of trust from this and asked for a full refund for future lessons.

Karen is an incredibly skillful teacher. She is very passionate about music and it easy to be comfortable with her. She shares her training and knowledge very clearly. The vocal exercises seem very unique and holistic for body and voice health. She is very encouraging, caring, and soul-uplifting. I feel like I have a new connection with my voice and all that is connected to using it... as an instrument and the journey is only just starting. 45 minutes went by so fast. I am looking forward to my next lessons.

I am a string specialist. That means I teach and play violin, viola, cello, double bass, guitar, bass guitar, mandolin, ukulele and piano. I earned B.A. earned from the University of Northern Colorado, Greeley Colorado where I was a double major in classical guitar and double bass. In my senior year I was the recipient of the Annual Concerto Contest where I performed the "Concerto in A Major" on double bass with the University orchestra for the spring concert. I have played in both professional and semi-professional orchestras in Colorado and Arizona. I believe that any student will practice more if he or she likes the music they are playing. Periodically I will ask a student to give me a name of a piece of music that they would like to learn how to play. I notate it for them, often simplifying the rhythm and chords in Finale NotePad and give it to them free of charge. I teach students how to play music on their given instrument. Not just how to play the instrument but working on ...

I'm a motivated and good listener teacher who loves to see his students accomplish their objectives. I have a Masters degree in Jazz from the Manhattan School of Music and a Bachelor in Classical Double Bass from the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna, Austria. I'm a active musician, both as a leader of my projects as well as sideman. I have played all around Europe, Egypt as well as much around in the New York area. I have also released two albums under my name, composing all the music in both of them.

I have been teaching for 5 years. Right after finishing my Bachelor degree, I started teaching in two major schools where I taught double bass, piano, music theory and conducted the school's orchestra. Since I moved to New York, I taught through the Manhattan School of Music Outreach Department, teaching young students about Jazz and Improvisation. I have also taught privately in my home studio.

My name is Jerry. I LOVE music and passing my knowledge on to others. I have played many different instruments in many different kinds of bands. It all one major thing in common, it was FUN! If you are not having fun while learning an instrument you won't want to learn. Lessons can be fun AND educational at the same time. I have had many parents tell me I'm one of the best teachers they have ever seen. (A couple of them were public school teachers themselves). I truly want my students to succeed and I will do everything in my power to help them accomplish that!

Extremely unprofessional to abruptly cancel scheduled/paid lessons without the courtesy of a message or any notice because this instructor was unhappy with a 12-year-old child's progress. Very surprised by and disappointed in the manner in which he handled this situation, certainly could have been handled with more respect and maturity.

Jerry is a wonderful instructor. I wasn’t sure how online lessons would go but they have been seamless and fun and my son is making progress with the bugle. I would highly recommend this format and this teacher. The convenience and quality of instruction are excellent. We are signing up for more lessons and may move on to another instrument once my son feels confident on the bugle.

"David gave my son music lessons on upright bass and electric bass in the musical genres of classical and jazz, from 5th grade through high school. David is extremely a talented and knowledgeable musician as well as being a very professional and competent teacher. David interacted effectively with my son, through the ups and downs of middle school and high school. David stuck with him and always supported him. My son's success in his high school music program was very much due to David. My son has continued on to Shenandoah Conservatory, studying Jazz performance on the upright bass. David is a working musician as well and was influential in introducing my son to the realities of music as a profession. David and my son continue to keep in touch and jam when their schedules allow. I highly recommend David Lester as a music teacher for all levels on upright and electric bass in multiple styles and genres (classical, jazz, rock, funk)."
