I love showing other people how to play musical instruments, especially cello! If you're a beginner, I'll get you playing music right away; note-reading, scales, and stuff can come later. If you've been playing for a little while, we can work together to help you learn new skills, new music, and practice techniques that can help you progress quickly while avoiding frustration.

Thomas and Sammy connected right away. Thomas had a terrible experience last year and following that, wouldn't even pick up his cello without proadding and arguing. This afternoon he picked up his cello and started playing the minute he got home from school. Yea! Prayer answered!

Jonny plans on communicating a love for music in his lessons. He believes firmly that technique's purpose is to get out of the way of the music and all physical training (posture, hand formation, release of tension, etc.) is to allow that to be fluid process. A lover of etudes and scales, Jonny uses those as the building blocks to developing a musical ear and allowing the performer to truly connect to the audience.

About Jonathan

Jonny Martin is studying under Kurt Baldwin of the Arianna String Quartet. Having studied the cello for over 15 years, Jonny has had many opportunities to experience the joys of music. Dahna’s holistic approach to cello pedagogy initially emphasizes the development of proper body alignment and technique which then fosters effortless tone production, accurate pitch, and musical expression. The lesson curriculum is modified to fit each student’s individual needs.

In addition to weekly private lessons, the students have the opportunity to meet and interact with each other in quarterly group performance classes. Performance opportunities are also available at various venues around the Silicon Valley. Many of the students are members of local youth orchestras such as The Palo Alto Chamber Orchestra, the El Camino Youth Symphony, the Peninsula Youth Symphony and the California Youth Symphony. Students also have the opportunity to take part in the the Capriccio Chamber Music Institute which Dahna runs jointly with her colleague Alexander Eisenberg. This unique program offers students the opportunity to perform side-by-side with local ...

I am amazed by the progress my daughter made studying with Dahna. Dahna challenges her with hard pieces and helps her understand the music by playing together with her. Dahna makes sure my daughter “feels” the piece she is playing. With the feeling the technique becomes easy.
Dahna pours her heart and soul into teaching, and that shows in every concert: all her students play really well.

"Laura is a wonderful cello teacher. Our daughter (10 y.o.) has been playing cello for 2 years. We just moved to NYC and needed a cello teacher. We found Laura and our daughter just had her first lesson with Laura. They reviewed skills, practiced pieces, ear training and Laura provided appropriate level workbooks at the end for home practice. Our daughter said "I can't wait to work with Laura again next week." Proof enough for us."

"I took 10 lessons with a different teach last summer and ended my package not being able to read sheet music or find my finger placement on the strings without second thought.

I have had just 3 lessons with Ellen thus far, and am reading sheet music like a wiz and gaining more and more confidence each lesson with my finger placement and now bowing.

Ellen has a wonderful system of teaching that truly makes everything she exposes you to stick, and has been getting me very excited to continue on knowing that I am in good hands and will progress quickly because of it. I will most definitely continue to see Ellen."

Is Cello Hard to Learn? Read THIS Before Taking Lessons

Many beginning musicians wonder, “Is cello hard to learn?” The process of learning the cello is not difficult, but it’s important to keep in mind that the cello is not an instrument of instant gratification. It does require focused, daily practice time and a good teacher to guide you along the way. How far you progress with cello is a direct result of the amount of quality time you put into practicing the instrument. Even someone who puts in just 30 minutes a day will notice a signi …
