About Alexander
My name is Alex, and my passion is teaching music. I offer clients a unique learning experience with customized lesson plans and personalized attention to fit your exact goals and needs. These aren’t just words to me…they are a commitment I make to everyone that I have the pleasure of working with.

Here’s who I am…

I earned a Bachelor's of Music from Berklee College of Music where I studied Bass Performance and Composition. I have years of experience playing upright and electric bass in many styles such as rock, jazz, orchestral, and big band. I’ve studied a variety of instruments over the last 20 years including guitar, bass, drums, ukulele, and piano.

Here’s what I can do for you…

I will give you my full attention and unyielding patience with each and every lesson. Together we will explore the principals of music that
will enable you to learn to play in any style you choose to study. Ultimately my job is not to teach you to play, but to show you how to teach yourself. I will arm you with a thorough understanding of technique and theory.

I love working with kids and adults. I love brand new players with no experience as well as seasoned players who just want to fill in some gaps in their knowledge. Whatever your age, and wherever you’re at with your playing, I hope you will give me the chance to help you have more fun and confidence in music.

Every player I work with gets access to a personal online Lesson Journal where you can see my notes from our lessons, do homework from your “Stuff to work on” lists, and access my entire digital library! Every lesson is designed just for you.

Let’s get started…

You can take lessons at my studio, in your home, or online via Skype.

For lessons in my studio, I can provide instruments and amplifiers for both of us.

There is ample seating for parents to sit in on lessons. Parking is available in the driveway.

You’re going to love your lessons!
-Alex

Instruction in Upright Bass may cover a number of topics. Students will learn about the construction and proper maintenance of the instrument, and physical considerations (how to hold the instrument properly, proper hand placement and position, avoiding injury, etc.). Students will also learn about scales and arpeggios, rhythm, and pizzicato vs. arco playing. Genres covered include jazz, bluegrass, classical, folk, and more. For jazz students, lessons will include an exploration of walking bass lines, latin-jazz rhythms, ostinatos/riffs, and improvisation.

About Kevin
Experienced bassist/pianist available for eager students of all experience levels and ages! I started playing piano as a young child, and bass while in high school. I have been unable to put down either since! I structure my lessons around what students want to, while also helping them build a strong musical foundation. I teach electric bass, upright bass, piano, and other keyboard instruments (organ, synthesizer, etc.). The main genres I cover are rock, blues, pop, funk, and jazz, but am also capable of teaching classical, latin, folk, country, and many other styles. I utilize a number of texts in my lessons, including, but not limited to, method books by Simandl, Ray Brown, and Rufus Reid, an etude collection by John Pattitucci, and a latin method by Oscar Stagnaro. The following materials are available at my studio: amp, basses, cables
, effect pedals, recording equipment, manuscript paper, and more. Piano lessons are conducted at the student's home.

I picked up the bass during high school, and performed in the school's jazz ensemble, guitar ensemble, orchestra, symphonic band, and percussion ensemble. These groups help me establish foundational skills on both bass guitar and upright bass, and provided me with an understanding of the prevalence and diversity of bass in many types of music. In 2011, I began studying music at the University of Utah, and graduated in December 2014 with a Bachelor of Music in Jazz Performance. During that time, I was able to study under the best musicians in Utah, exploring numerous areas of music, including theory, history, composition, recording, performance technique, and many more. It was during this time that I established my private studio, as well as began teaching at the Granger School of Music in Park City, where I also help develop music courses for high school credit.

I have had the pleasure of playing in many different bands and ensembles for over 10 years. During this time, I have played throughout Utah and surrounding states, embarked on a handful of tours, appeared on TV and radio, and participated in multiple recording projects. Recent projects include Hot House West, Crook & The Bluff, and Charles Ellsworth.

My 8 year old daughter has been taking lessons with Kevin for almost a year. She likes that the lessons are fun, Kevin taught her the Super Mario Brothers theme song, and I like that she is being challenged while also developing an appreciation for all types of music. Even though my daughter is taking guitar lessons, Kevin occasionally incorporates other instruments (piano, mandolin, ukulele) into her lessons. We both love this! Kevin is always on time and comes to each lesson with a planned agenda. He is also great to work with when rescheduling. We hope to continue our lessons with Kevin! He is awesome!

Kevin Schultz is an extremely qualified teacher of many instruments. I have taken Mandolin and Piano from him and is able to match his instruction to my way of learning. I have seen him perform with his band Electric Cathedral as well and was
amazed at their talent.
I would highly recommend lessons from Kevin Schultz.

The main focus is on technique (bowing, fingerings) while covering any classical repertoire. I can also cover jazz, rock/pop if the student wishes.

About Nathan
I have been teaching private lessons for close to 10 years and have been an active performer for even longer, playing in all different types of groups, from rock bands and jazz groups to orchestras and brass bands. I studied music at Frostburg State University (Bachelors) and the Peabody Conservatory (Masters). I can teach just about any age and skill level and cover anything you are interested in learning; whether its a certain style, genre, technique or song.

*** Lesson Details ***
My lessons are laid back, with a focus on perfecting the basics. Most students work out of a method book appropriate to their skill level. Aside from that we'll also spend time learning songs and pieces of the students choice. With the right amount of effort, you'll know your way around your instrument in no time at all

*** Travel Equipment ***
Will provide sheet music and exercises. My students should have a working instrument as well as any method book or sheet music we are working on.

*** Specialties ***
I teach all styles and genres

Classical music-focused, fun and relaxed environment, experienced teacher with top conservatory background

About Jessica
Jessica moved to the Chevy Chase/Bethesda area in 2009, having grown up and gone to school in New York and Ohio. She loves the area, and she and her husband are thrilled to be putting down roots in the community. As a performer, Jessica has traveled around the world, but throughout her career teaching has been one of her most important focuses. "As a relative newcomer to the DC area, growing my private studio has been a great way to get involved in the community. My teaching style is individualized, but I always try to include two important things: building a strong basic skill set, and developing creativity."

*** Lesson Details ***
Whether your goal is to make it into All-State, give a solo recital, play tunes at family gatherings, or just try something new for the very first time, I will help you succeed and have a good time along
the way.

In my view, the most interesting thing about performing music is that it is one of the few activities that engages both the left and the right brain at the same time. With that in mind, my teaching places equal importance on developing strong technique, and developing creativity. Students learn all the basics of music, and also spend time developing strong ensemble skills and strong background knowledge of style and repertoire, so that they can enjoy music in all kinds of settings, all their lives.

Knowing from experience how "boring" it can be to learn by rote, I combine technical work with fun time playing duets together, improvising, and exploring a wide variety of styles and genres of music. After all, there is no experience so motivating as hearing a new piece that you HAVE to learn to play yourself!

*** Studio Equipment ***
lessons in either living room or upstairs office; Steinway baby grand piano in living room;

*** Travel Equipment ***
I expect piano students to have daily access to either a piano or a keyboard with 88 full-sized, weighted keys. Bass or cello students must have their own bass or cello.

*** Specialties ***
classical, baroque, renaissance

It is my goal as a teacher to give you the tools to play music but more importantly to create music.

My Teaching Philosophy

Left Hand-
Scales and arpeggios our the bedrock of music. They are the foundation of everything harmonically and melodically. We will begin with learning our major, minor and pentatonic scales and corresponding arpeggios. Once we have an understanding of those we will delve into our modes and more “exotic” scales.

Right Hand-
The right hand is our time machine. It gives us the ability to play in time and with groove and feel. We will work on rhythmic studies string crossings and practicing with a metronome. Remembering music is harmony, Melody and rhythm working as one.

For those who are new to playing music the hardest thing for some to master is rhythm/time keeping. It is the black and white right or wrong of the music world. Often times our want to progress quickly is hampered by skipping over the basic building blocks of rhythm and ...

About Steven
Steven F offers instruction for electric or acoustic bass guitar, upright bass, mandolin and ukulele as well as music theory.

Steven F., a professional musician and teacher for over fifteen years, graduated cum laude with a performance degree in the upright bass from The Ohio State University where he studied and performed everything from classical to classic rock. Indeed, from the blues to bluegrass, from rock to classical, he has done it all. He currently plays with The Spikedrivers, Fox ‘n’ Hounds Bluegrass Ensemble, and Neil Jacobs' American Gypsy. He recently performed with guitar legends GE Smith and Jorma Kaukonen and David Grier.

In addition, Fox is a gifted instructor with over twelve years of experience. He incorporates music theory and technique in lessons so his students are able to go farther than just readin
g music. They learn to create music, to play with other musicians, and to play by ear.

Although Fox is serious about music he is able to keep lessons entertaining for students, and offers instruction in many musical genres. Many of Fox’s students have gone on to study music in college and have started successful careers in the field.

Perfect first session. Michael adapted to Rory's deep understanding of music theory but total lack of knowledge of the bass. He was thoughtful, patient, and adaptive introducing the bass and providing practice suggestions to Rory. I recommend Michael in the highest terms as an instructor for beginners and knowing his vast education and experience in the bass I must assume this travels though the entire range of students - beginner to advanced. Few lessons with Zeph at our place when we lived together and subsequently at my house. Zeph was patient and showed me lots about chord voicing. He both showed me progressions that highlighted the kinds of modification possible and helped me to include more variety in my own compositions. We'd play through a bit of my stuff first usually, then move in to more of the lesson. After working on that, we'd go back into something of mine with more focus and precision. Zeph was good at matching my skill level, and keeping the content and the focus consistent with what I could understand at the time. His knowledge of music theory was, at least for me, expansive enough that his answers and references ended up being very helpful. He introduced tone substitution, for instance, in a super easy to understand way.

All in all, great experiences over the last 5+ years and I'll definitely be working with him while I'm in California.

My classes are very flexible when it comes to what the student wants. I can go from just teaching very basic bass playing to advanced harmonic concepts and jazz improvisation. On the first class, I give the student the choice of controlling our lessons materials about what they want to learn. Or the student can choose to let me control our classes, in which I will bring my own materials and ideas in which we should work and will go through the whole academic process of learning music.

About Marcelo
Established New York musician. Berklee College of Music Graduate. Have been teaching for many years and know that each student has their own mindset and we need to work around each person`s goals and interests. I teach mainly pop, rock, blues, jazz, classical, funk, RnB. All ages and levels are welcome.

*** Lesson Details ***
Lessons are very relaxed and we will focus on ways to practice and getting the student to learn what he/she wants. Some people just want to come and learn a few tunes, some want to really learn the instrument and practice all the time. It all depends on the individual and I`m more than ready to adapt for each one of my students with the methods I have.
On our first class we will spend some time discussing what are the goals of the student and I will formulate a good plan so we can reach those goals in no time
.
I usually have 3 main paths that the student can choose.
1st - Learn the instrument enough so you can play your favorite songs and have fun with friends.
2nd(most requested) - Learn the instrument from scratch. Study technique, repertoire, a little of reading and music theory and learn how to improvise. This will allow the person to have their own tools to study on their own after attending classes with me.
3rd - Usually people who have been playing before like this one. We will go deep in music theory, ear training, reading, improvising and technique. Always leaning challenging tunes that will develop the student skills. This one allows the student to follow a professional path on the future, or maybe go into a music college.

*Location
Classes can take place at my studio or at your own location with an extra fee for transportation.

*Under 18 students
For children under 18 parents are more than welcome to stay for the classes, tell me if there is any specific goal you are looking for or talk about any subject that you might want.

*AUDITION PREP
I also help people to prepare for auditions. For this subject, I will tell you how to get ready for an audition. If you are trying to get in a college I have many contacts around the country and know how most auditions work and can help you with any question there might be. For auditions for orchestras or band we can work on repertoire and behavior to get you ready and all set to get accepted.

Jonathan taught me when I was around middle school age and has left a lasting impression on how I approach the bass and music 10-ish years later. Under his tutelage I learned music theory, techniques, and all sorts of different genres and styles.

His lessons were always very professional. I always felt challenged, but not overwhelmed, by the material being taught. He also made it easy to be interested in the lessons; he would always ask if there's any song or genre that I wanted to learn and that sort of thing.

Overall, definitely a 5/5 top shelf educator and musician.
