I just recently started with Dee. She is doing a great job of helping me realistically assess my performance, and constructively set goals to improve the aspects that need work. It's been fun and very helpful.

Our 8 year old son had his first Guitar lesson with Dee this past weekend, and she was amazing. She wasted no time getting down to brass tacks with our son, showing him the various parts of the guitar, how to hold it and within minutes he knew two chords. She was able to keep our kiddo engaged, offered great praise and positive feedback/reinforcement and kept him on task for the entire 45 minute lesson. We could not be happier and cannot wait to see what he learns during his next lessons with her!

Private Upright Bass Teacher

Classical music-focused, fun and relaxed environment, experienced teacher with top conservatory background

About Jessica

Jessica moved to the Chevy Chase/Bethesda area in 2009, having grown up and gone to school in New York and Ohio. She loves the area, and she and her husband are thrilled to be putting down roots in the community. As a performer, Jessica has traveled around the world, but throughout her career teaching has been one of her most important focuses. "As a relative newcomer to the DC area, growing my private studio has been a great way to get involved in the community. My teaching style is individualized, but I always try to include two important things: building a strong basic skill set, and developing creativity."

*** Lesson Details ***
Whether your goal is to make it into All-State, give a solo recital, play tunes at family gatherings, or just try something new for the very first time, I will help you succeed and have a good time along

the way.

In my view, the most interesting thing about performing music is that it is one of the few activities that engages both the left and the right brain at the same time. With that in mind, my teaching places equal importance on developing strong technique, and developing creativity. Students learn all the basics of music, and also spend time developing strong ensemble skills and strong background knowledge of style and repertoire, so that they can enjoy music in all kinds of settings, all their lives.

Knowing from experience how "boring" it can be to learn by rote, I combine technical work with fun time playing duets together, improvising, and exploring a wide variety of styles and genres of music. After all, there is no experience so motivating as hearing a new piece that you HAVE to learn to play yourself!

*** Studio Equipment ***
lessons in either living room or upstairs office; Steinway baby grand piano in living room;

*** Travel Equipment ***
I expect piano students to have daily access to either a piano or a keyboard with 88 full-sized, weighted keys. Bass or cello students must have their own bass or cello.

*** Specialties ***
classical, baroque, renaissance

I had a great first lesson with Jessica. The lesson took place in a comfortable studio in her house. We discussed my goals and then reviewed where I am currently. She paid carefully attention to my body position with the bow and had several great suggestions on exercises to improve it. I'm already looking forward to the next lesson.

I really enjoy taking piano lessons with Jessica. It had been 40 years since I took lessons (as a teenager). Jessica's manner as well as her knowledge and love of music is just what I was hoping to find in a teacher. Her ability to explain musical concepts and her thoughtful approach to teaching has far surpassed my expectations. She gives great constructive feedback and ensures that you understand what she is saying. She is very positive and patient. I thoroughly enjoy my lessons with her and recommend her strongly.

About Michael

Michael has worked with kids for 10 years in schools and arts programs to find fun and their best self through performance. He has taught orchestra, chamber music, jazz band and music theory in the public schools, while performing in local ensembles in and around the city. He also has studied drama, voice and movement and believes all these skills help in expressing yourself--no matter what pieces you want to play!

In addition to working with students K-12, he also loves working with adults. I try to provide a nurturing atmosphere for someone trying revive or discover previously hidden musical interests!

*** Lesson Details ***
We begin with what we love. The student usually chooses one of his or her favorite songs to interpret. Later, we add music, usually from the classical or jazz fields, that build our skills and help us f

eel successful. All technique is based on real music. Learning scales, keys and music theory become part of the music. By the end of 6 months, we will have a "repertoire" of several songs that express our best self!

Private Upright Bass Teacher

The main focus is on technique (bowing, fingerings) while covering any classical repertoire. I can also cover jazz, rock/pop if the student wishes.

About Nathan

I have been teaching private lessons for close to 10 years and have been an active performer for even longer, playing in all different types of groups, from rock bands and jazz groups to orchestras and brass bands. I studied music at Frostburg State University (Bachelors) and the Peabody Conservatory (Masters). I can teach just about any age and skill level and cover anything you are interested in learning; whether its a certain style, genre, technique or song.

*** Lesson Details ***
My lessons are laid back, with a focus on perfecting the basics. Most students work out of a method book appropriate to their skill level. Aside from that we'll also spend time learning songs and pieces of the students choice. With the right amount of effort, you'll know your way around your instrument in no time at all

*** Travel Equipment ***

Will provide sheet music and exercises. My students should have a working instrument as well as any method book or sheet music we are working on.

*** Specialties ***
I teach all styles and genres

This is the first lesson I got to listen to of my son working with Nathan. Usually I'm not home from work. I am really impressed with how much he was able to help my son improve so quickly. I wish we had started this much sooner.

Michael is an engaged, easy to talk to, knowledgable, and thorough teacher. It seems like teaching comes naturally to him - he explains the full scope as well as the details of what you're learning so that you know why you're learning it. I'm looking forward to our future lessons!

Perfect first session. Michael adapted to Rory's deep understanding of music theory but total lack of knowledge of the bass. He was thoughtful, patient, and adaptive introducing the bass and providing practice suggestions to Rory. I recommend Michael in the highest terms as an instructor for beginners and knowing his vast education and experience in the bass I must assume this travels though the entire range of students - beginner to advanced. We look forward to the next lesson.

Suzuki Method - students as young as age three can learn to play the upright bass!

About Hans

I started my career as a musician at the age of 5 studying with Suzuki violin teachers. During high school, I moved my concentration to the electric and double basses. I began studying in college as a jazz performance major and also earned a Bachelor of Science in Music Education with state certifications in Pennsylvania and New Jersey. I have years of experience teaching diverse learners and students with special needs in several public, private, charter, and catholic school districts. I love teaching and attend certification courses each summer for Suzuki Bass Pedagogy with Virginia Dixon at the Milt Hinton Bass Institute at Oberlin Conservatory, and Elmhurst College.

As a performer, I have played with many orchestras, artists, weddings, chamber groups, theater companies, and bands in the Philadelphia area. I love performing all types

of music and continue to study performance at Rowan University under the tutelage of Douglas Mapp and Timothy Schwarz.

"David was great. We just need to figure out why the connection was so fuzzy so we can communicate a little better."

"Mark is a great teacher, not only for his knowledge in music but for the instrument as well. He is a patient and kind but will also encourage you to break
out of your comfort zone to guide you towards the goals you want to achieve on your instrument. I really enjoy my lessons because not only am I getting better on the upright bass, I feel the lessons have helped me become a better musician."

Laura
"Kyle has given me contra bass, aka upright bass, weekly lessons from August 2015 through May 2016. I have never played a string instrument prior to this,
although I do play piano and have played the flute, bagpipes, and piccolo over the years. I did not need education in reading music.

Kyle was able to take me from sounding like a lower octave version of Jack Benny (a mid-20th century comedian famous for his howlingly horrid violin playing) to a level where I know how to hold the instrument and the bow, the fingerings, bowing technique, and how to get a very respectable sound from the instrument.

He also installed the strings when I received the new instrument, found a manufacturing flaw in the bridge height that the manufacturer subsequently paid to repair, and diagnosed a resonance issue with the instrument that was corrected with a balance weight on the string below the bridge."

"Dr. Norman L. teaches via skype, he is in LA and my son is on the east coast. I choose Norman as a teacher for my son due to his experience and credential
s. He is both an educator and a musician. Norman received 5 stars due to his personality, knowledge and teaching methods. My son enjoys his lesson because the teacher adapts his teaching style to accommodate my son's current string bass skill level, playing ability and his learning style. Alex recommends Dr. Norman L. for a teacher for any string bass player."

"Excellent Teacher

Along with being incredibly knowledgeable, Alex has the patience and communication skills that really make him excel as a teacher. As a
complete beginner to the upright bass (and music in general), I find Alex breaks concepts down in a clear, step-by-step fashion, so that it is not overwhelming. He also gives useful tips on how to be a better learner when tackling challenges, which helps make my personal practice even more effective. Alex is approachable and eager to answer questions even in between classes - I highly recommend him as teacher!"

"Norman was extremely qualified and talented. His lessons were suited to my individual needs and he answered the questions and worked with me to make the
most out of my level and limited lesson time. I have learned a great deal and this experience with Norman was well worth the time and money. I am grateful for his lessons."
