The viola is more than just a "big violin". It has idiosyncrasies that make the mechanics of playing it different. If you are switching from violin to viola, you'll need some help in adjusting to the bigger scale of everything, especially the bowing technique.

It's such a beautiful instrument, full of warmth and depth for those willing to explore it. Viola lessons include theory, technique, repertoire and working with your physiology to find just the right hold.

About Gail
I studied music from elementary school through high school, taking a break to have a family. After I volunteered to teach Kindergarten and first grade music at a school in Lakeside, I picked up my instruments and began to study again in earnest. Many hours of study, lessons and practice later, I am a better musician than I have ever been, and I've also gained a valuable perspective on teaching that I never could have had by simply being a musician.

I currently play viola with Equinox Quartet, playing Renaissance music up through the Baroque period.

My strengths lie in working with young children, helping them both understand music and love it. My goal for every student is to leave me having a strong understanding of theory, musicianship and desire to seek out more opportunities for growth. I work with each student to tailor a prog
ram specifically for their needs, from working through simple bowing mechanics issues to the psychology of performance. Each student has different challenges to overcome, and simply using a one-size fits all approach is not going to help them.

I pride myself in being flexible and available to to my students for questions, whenever they may need to ask them. I believe that you shouldn't have to wait for the next lesson to have the question answered that may just make the pieces start coming together a bit quicker for you.

*** Lesson Details ***
A typical lesson consists of checking student's progress, addressing any immediate issues and working on skill building.

OK, so those are the basics, but what happens is so much more than that! One student may have trouble hitting a C#, so we'll work on those. Another may have trouble relaxing, we might spend some time on breathing exercises to help with that. Still another might have a death grip on the neck of their instrument, so we'll do some exercises to help relax their hands.

My goal is to help students get well on their way to a lifetime love of learning and making music.

In 3-6 months, they should be:
* Reading music consistently at a level appropriate to their progress.
* Developing an understanding of rhythm and meter.
* Placing their fingers properly, and reliably for the most part.
* Developing correct posture and holding their instrument and bow in a relaxed manner that suits their body type and facilitates the freedom of movement required for great music.

*** Travel Equipment ***

*** Specialties ***
Classically trained, but I realize not everyone learns the same way, so a hardcore theory based approach is not always the right choice. We work together to develop a plan that will work and help foster a love of making music.

I specialize in working with kids of all ages. Don't we all have a little kid inside us just itching to get out and play?

My newbie (beginner with zero experience) son has been taking violin lessons via skype for almost 2 years now. I specifically was looking for a teacher who could meet us over the internet, considering I needed a break from the commute. Although I wasn't sure this could work, I gave it a shot...& I am SOOO glad I did! I love the flexibility for our lessons to be in the early morning before school, we could only do this online.

My son LOVES playing his violin! It's funny because he wanted to quit once or twice when he came upon new challenges, etc. Gail works patiently with him as he gains confidence, slowly but surely he has improved dramatically. She has customized his lessons perfectly to fit his needs which is what I was hoping for. Online accompaniment to his songs made it even more fun & we just started a fiddle book (my son's request) which he is enjoying enormously.

My son picks up his violin & plays on his own all the time, WOW! He sounds great, is learning good technique & theory, but most importantly he was given a chance to enjoy the learning process, to me this is priceless. You won't be disappointed with Gail, she is a GREAT teacher! So glad we found her!!!

Side note: In the beginning I was trying to figure out how to tune the violin for my son, & fingering. The snark tuner & the chinatera fingerboard sticker gave me some needed confidence that we could do this online.

Gail is a very good and kind violin teacher and was just perfect for my son's introduction to instrument. He really enjoyed the lessons and learning how to play each of the strings then putting them together in a song. It was a wonderful experience.

I do a variety of styles in music for the violin. I use whatever method (book or teaching style) is needed to teach what the student needs to learn.

About Chris
I have been teaching private violin for over 20 years, and private viola/cello for about 10. I have taught in Charles and St. Mary's County Public schools. I am a member of American Strings Teacher's Association, National Association for Music Educators (Maryland Music Educators Association), and the Music Teachers National Association (Music Teachers Association of Charles County). As a teacher, I'm very student oriented. We move at your pace. The more you practice, the faster we move. I do encourage learning to read music, but I use multiple ways of teaching to reach my students. Everyone learns in a different way. My primary job is to see you achieve your goals in relation to your instrument. I also encourage that you take every opportunity to perform. There are many groups in the area that allow for different ages and styles of music
. I can help you understand what is going on behind the music and hopefully see what the composer was hoping to convey, if that is something you want to know. When I was a student I always wanted to know "why?". As a teacher, you will know why if I do.

*** Lesson Details ***
I try to keep my lesson area as stress free as possible. It's OK to make mistakes in my studio. I would like you to bring a notebook to lessons as well as your music and instrument. I write as much as I can down because if you were like I was during lessons, I would forget everything I was supposed to be watching for after 3 days. Like I said above, we move at your pace. The more you practice, the faster we move. Questions are a good thing. It shows interest. But sometimes you just have to stop asking questions and just take the leap of faith.
We start with note reading as well as proper form and the parts of the instrument. We also deal with general care. I will tune your instrument every time you come in for lessons until you learn how to tune it yourself. We will review the day before, I will check on what work you've done and then move onto the next song/ technique etc. After we learn how to pluck the first 8 notes, we start with scales and bowing.

After that we move through the "usual" routine. Scale, etude, song(s) or school test songs, audition requirements etc.

I try to keep the same routine because for some students it's easier for them to focus if they know the lesson is going to move in a familiar way. It's reassuring. After we become proficient in the basics, we move into whatever genre you would like to play, within reason. If you are in the school orchestra we will work towards you getting an A.

I would say I'm more laid back when you are not preparing for an audition. Auditions require a lot of work and I want you to do as close to perfect as possible. I become fairly demanding during that time.

In about 6 months, you can play almost any tune you can hear on the radio. Explaining where you could be gets fairly technical and I might as well be talking like Charlie Brown's teacher.

I am familiar with Paul Rolland's work, Valerie Bobbett Gardner's Violin Virtuosity, as well as Guillespie's. I was brought up Suzuki but haven't been trained in Suzuki. I have taken classes on how to teach to a variety of students so I could hold a teaching license in the state. I do participate with (Canadian) The Royal Conservatory of Music Music Development. This is active in the US also.

Special note: If you are allergic to cats, you will want to take lessons at my other studio location, not at the home.

IF you are contacting me with questions, please include either take lessons or lessons in the subject area so I can find you faster. I get a lot of junk mail and it is easy for me to miss a note from you.

My primary expertise is in teaching beginners to low intermediate students but I gladly accept students of any level.

About Peter
I am energetic, experienced and creative music teacher with a proven ability to get the very best out of pupils, an expert at identifying the appropriate resources required for a subject matter and ensuring that they are used efficiently and effectively Most of my students read and play simple music after 2-3 classes of active instruction.

I posses an extensive classical music and music pedagogy training. All my musical knowledge and expertise was attained in Eastern Europe. I play and teach piano, upright bass, bass guitar and a range of other instruments. Over the years I taught basic piano, the beginner violin, viola, cello and a variety of school instruments such as recorder and xylophone. I also teach advanced music theory, harmony and basics of composition and orchestral arranging required for music colleges. I especially
find it rewarding working with beginners and the opportunity to show them the amazing world of listening, playing and making music.

The teaching begins with identifying student's musical needs, goals and tastes. Students are taught a stimulating, thorough, and graduated course of recital solos, theory, technical studies, and classic repertoire. For those wishing to pursue more of a classical approach to music, there are proven methods to accomplish that goal established by European master teachers and pedagogues. Also, I can teach the know-how of Jazz and Blues though gradual lessons that cover basic theory, scales and chords up to melody and harmony development.

*** Lesson Details ***
The learning process should be, for the most part, fun and based upon a strong relationship between the teacher and the student. Curriculum and lesson plans are based on student's abilities and aspirations with appropriate balance between theoretical and practical work. The lesson material is always carefully chosen, and when necessary, adapted to specific learning needs.

With a proper approach, everyone can learn to play music. Whether you want to pursue a music career, or just play for fun and enjoyment I can help you attain your goals. From basic piano and stringed instruments, to advanced theory, harmony, composition and improvisation to jazz, pop and rock.

Classes are not based on a single source or book. I provide other exercises in printed form for students to keep and take home.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Two high end digital keyboards, two violins, viola, cello, upright bass, bass guitar and amplifier, music stands, stereo equipment with a large CD collection of just any conceivable music style.. Assorted school instruments: recorder (soprano and tenor), xylophone. Various music charts and a large library of music resources and other books; Extensive e-library and ability to print any required material on the spot. Instant access to many on-line sheet music resources.

*** Travel Equipment ***
Full size and a school grade digital keyboards , bass guitar, amplifier, staff paper and other printed resources, violin, viola, spare parts, maintenance tools and equipment.

Peter got right down to business and it is clear he knows what he is doing. My son is 5 and Peter kept his attention for the full 30 minutes, which is really saying something. At the end of the first lesson, my son was introduced to and could repeat note names; could play a five-note scale; and was learning his right hand from his left. I myself went to Juilliard and Yale for music and am so pleased Peter will be teaching our child(ren).

Are wondering why every time you hit a certain note, it squeaks, or crunches, or sounds glassy? Or maybe you can't quite read the notes. Perhaps you are no stranger to the instrument, but need improvement of musicianship, expression, etc. Let me help you master the skills you're trying to achieve. With my help, you can make breathtaking music!

About Kimberly
I grew up in a household of 9 where music was always center stage. We would sing as a family in different venues and were often called the VonTrapp family. I have enjoyed singing and performing from a young age. I began studying flute at age 8, after scoring highest in the harmony listening exam and began formal violin lessons at the age of 9. I studied all genres including, fiddle, classical, musical theater and 20th century. I have continued to study violin since then and have performed in many orchestras and small groups, such as Honor Orchestra, the Paradise Symphony, the Yuba College Orchestra, Yuba-Sutter Oratorio Society Orchestra and more. I have been concert master and first stand in many of these. I have also soloed in many and have been the first violinist in quartets for countless weddings and other events. I have also played
in numerous pit orchestras for musicals.
I have been in choirs and soloing since I can remember. I have performed and soloed in choirs such as the Yuba-Sutter Oratorio Society, CSUS Chamber Choir, the CSUS Women's Choir and more. I have toured to Victoria, Montreal, Ottowa, Oregon and Washington. I have also been in opera productions such as The Magic Flute, Peleas and Melisande and Die Fledermaus (The Bat) with CSUS Opera. I am a recent recipient of the Saturday Club Scholarship, a prestigious award, and have won many competitions (some repeatedly) both vocally and with violin, such as the Tri-County Competition, Young Artist Competitions, and the California Soloist and Ensemble Competitions. Additionally, I have performed musical theater repertoire and have performed as lead in musicals such as Beauty and the Beast and Into the Woods. I have also soloed repeatedly with the Yuba College jazz band and at churches all around.
I have earned my Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance from CSU Sacramento. I have my Associates Degrees in both Music and Early Childhood Education from Yuba College. Additionally, I have obtained my certificate of completion of training from Music Together, an organization which trains teachers to teach Basic Music Competence (both in tonality and meter), and am currently teaching this curriculum.
I have been teaching music privately for over ten years to all ages, genders and abilities. Additionally, I have taught ages 0-5 years in a preschool setting for 7 years and am extremely familiar with developmentally appropriate practices for both preschool and school age, as I am a site supervisor at a child development center with a preschool and after school program. I have had many adult students as well and encourage adults to enrich their lives with music at any age! Additionally, I have experience teaching parent child classes and am familiar with how to teach to the particular needs of each family and student.
I'm extremely excited and looking forward to growing as a professional, both teaching and performing, in both the areas of violin and voice and to be instrumental in your musical growth too; I can't wait to share my passion with you and to ignite your passion for music too!

*** Lesson Details ***
I have been teaching since 2002 and have loved every minute of it! I teach all ages. I tailor my style of teaching to each student's goals and to what works for you. If you want to learn Taylor Swift music, I won't be giving you arias. On the other hand, if you wish to study classically, I have repertoire appropriate for you. I teach fiddle, classical, orchestral, 20th century and more for violin students and have experience with jazz, classical, musical theater, pop, religious, spiritual, choral, 20th century and more vocally.
For violin students, I use the Suzuki method as a pushing off point, a tried and true method used in many countries across the world, though I have other repertoire including fiddle, orchestra, small ensemble, solo, concertos, Christmas, and more. For vocalist, I start with the book, Adventures in Singing. I also have warm ups and exercises to keep you vocally healthy. I will teach you anything you want to learn! I also teach how to read music, theory and harmony, depending on your interest and tailored to your current skill level.
I am encouraging and knowledgeable. I will meet you at your current level, be that beginner, intermediate, or advanced. My students can look forward to being encouraged and growing through their time with me. I don't have preset ideas about where you should be in 3-6 months, nor do I have a one size fits all teaching style. Instead, I will work with you individually so that you will become the best musician you can be, meet your goals, and increase your enjoyment and appreciation for music.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Lessons in open space, upright piano, digital piano, music stands, metronome, violins available for rent, music, staff paper and computer

*** Travel Equipment ***
I expect my students to provide the instrument with all of it's accessories (ie shoulder rest, rosin, bow and case) along with the appropriate level Suzuki book. I have instruments available for rent. My voice students should bring their own music also. I have a piano in my studio along with music stands. Of course, every student must have a pencil and come ready to have fun learning! :)

*** Specialties ***
Suzuki, solfege, art songs and arias, reading music, fiddle, classical, healthy vocal technique and musical theater. I am very good at working with any age.

I love the viola; I'm primarily a violist and love nothing more. I would love to share my passion with you or your child!

I have a Master's degree in Viola Performance, and viola is my primary instrument. I have received extensive instruction on the minutiae of the viola, and can help you with any need that you many have!

I tailor my approach to each student. Some students require more technical work, some require interpretive. Both are fascinating and can be taught with structure and clarity.

About Martina
Hi! My name is Martina and I am a classically trained violist. In May of 2013 I received a Master of Music from Roosevelt University, where I studied with Lawrence Neuman of the Chicago Symphony. I received an undergraduate degree from the University of Wisconsin with Sally Chisholm of the Pro Arte quartet. The only thing I love more than playing viola is sharing the joy of music with others! I've received training on violin and viola and can't wait to start teaching you or your child.

*** Lesson Details ***
I tailor my approach to each student to make sure that:
1.) The student is getting exactly what he/she wants out of the lessons.
2.) The lessons are an appropriate difficulty for the student.
3.) A student's strengths and weaknesses are being addressed with a tailor-made lesson plan and long-term goals.

*** Travel E
quipment ***
I can provide a stand. Student is responsible for purchasing an instrument, and any sheet music. I can definitely advise on an instrument to purchase and will instruct with specific music requests.

She pointed out all of my strengths and weaknesses at the first lesson, and she always teaches at my pace and not her own, giving me the opportunity to completely learn something before moving on to more difficult things. She is overall a very friendly person who you will feel incredibly comfortable to be around, and she always does the best job that she can to teach me every single lesson. My students build technical proficiency and musicianship through a variety of personalized exercises, etudes, and pieces that encourage their creativity and a love for all kinds of music. Most importantly, they have lots of fun!

About Selena
I offer beginner to advanced violin lessons for all ages. I have gotten to perform in many different ensembles and styles. This allows me to adapt to students' interests. Having taught privately for over a decade now (has it really been that long?), I have developed many ways of explaining specific concepts since one student may understand it perfectly if explained differently than how another student grasped it. Teaching violin is one of my greatest loves because I get to constantly see students fall in love with music and violin.

All ages are welcome! Viola is one of my secondary instruments and I would love to pass on my passion for music to my students. Students can expect to learn how to play the viola with proper technique in a way that is unique to each student. Students can also expect to improve their overall music ship skills while earning audition skills and gaining overall confidence. I cannot wait to work with you.

About Brynn
I am an experienced violinist currently earning my bachelor's degree in violin performance at Youngstown State University. I have been playing the violin for 10 years. I am classically trained but enjoy playing other styles of music as well. I have been a part of many honors ensembles such as PMEA District 1 Orchestra, PMEA Honors Orchestra and Strings North in PA. At Youngstown State University, I participate in the Dana Chamber Orchestra, Dana Symphony Orchestra, and Strings Ensemble.

My students can expect to improve each week in their technique and overall musicality. I want my to students to have fun, love music and improve throughout their lessons with me. I want to pass on my passion for music to my students.

I have my child abuse clearances and my criminal background checks (with fingerprints) in OH and PA.

Everyone knows that violinists are a dime-a-dozen and that the viola is WAY COOLER than the violin, right?! With a richer, deeper, more mellow sound, the viola is a great instrument for anyone with sensitivity to higher frequencies! It also gets bigger than a violin, so the viola suits people with longer arms much more comfortably, usually, as well!

About Kaylah
Hello! My name is Kaylah and I have been teaching private lessons for 10 years! I graduated in 2011 from the University of Wyoming with a Music Education degree. My studio has grown in the last 10 years from having 3 students in my parents’ basement to now having 6 teachers and 110 students enrolled taking lessons on violin, viola, cello, bass, recorder, ukulele, guitar, piano, flute, and saxophone each week! Our students range in age from 3 years old to 75 years old! We definitely believe that music is for EVERYONE!

I also perform regularly with the Wyoming Symphony Orchestra and the Powder River Symphony Orchestra. I also participate in a program called Music on the Move to bring live music to assisted living homes and hospitals in Wyoming! My students and I also perform for our community many times each year whenever we are calle
d.

My latest venture has been to start the Eastern Wyoming Youth Orchestra in rural, southeastern Wyoming! We started off our first season with 20 students and a full string instrumentation in the Orchestra!

I LOVE teaching the violin, and even more, I LOVE teaching kids to LOVE music! I hope that you will consider me as your new teacher!!

I have found that Kaylah is a conscientious, knowledgeable, and engaging teacher. She has helped me to learn the foundations of the ukulele which has brought many hours of enjoyment, not only in lessons, but also during practice at home. I highly recommend her as a teacher on any of the instruments that she is highly qualified to teach.
