I can't say enough good things about Earl's instruction. He's extremely knowledgeable and talented and yet responsive, inspiring, and kind. Rather than applying a narrow and rigid approach to teaching, lessons are built around my abilities and interests and he has taught me new ways of looking at music and playing guitar. I've been teaching bass guitar for 10 years and my students have been able to go farther than they've ever imagined. From being able to become a great asset in bands, starting serious careers in music performance, to furthering their musical studies by attending college/university, and even becoming teachers themselves. My students have truly learned that with learning an instrument comes a much deeper love, understanding, and increased appreciation for music at a foundational level. Therefore, students inevitably develop a real sense of intimacy for music and become part of the life long journey that all of us musicians are on. Lastly, with time and patience, my students truly realize how very much capable they are of achieving anything they set their minds to achieving. Within the first few lessons, you'll be able to tune up your bass guitar properly, become familiar with your fretboard while learning to read a very useful tool known as tablature in order to get started right ...

Luther has been very helpful at teaching me the basics while also making sure we move at a pace in which I am comfortable before jumping into any new exercises. I look forward to having him as a teacher for a long time.
Brian Gee
When I was 53, I decided that I would like to learn how to play the bass guitar. I contacted Mr. Blackwell to see if he would be interested in teaching an older person how to play music. Mr. Blackwell told me that he could teach me how to play and my age is not an issue. I still remember my first lesson. I showed up with a music book and Mr. Blackwell said we are not going to use a book at this time because he wanted to teach me what I needed to know for my skill level, which by the way was novice! Three years later, not only can I play the bass, read music and improvise as needed, I play in a band and we are on the radio! If you are thinking of learning music or want to advance your music skills, Mr. Blackwell is the teacher that you are looking for! Bravo Mr. Blackwell!

Abbey is the real deal. She is the musician’s musician, the teacher’s teacher. As an instructor, she brings enthusiasm, patience, and thoughtfulness to every lesson. Coming into her tutorage as an intermediate level student, she has pushed and inspired me to be a more thoughtful performer and composer. Abbey draws from her deep well of theory and technique to create very practical exercises to fit one’s individual needs. I highly recommend her instruction for students of any level.
Andrew
Abbey is a great musician and she's everything you could want in a music teacher: inspiring, patient, thorough, and absolutely aware of just who she's teaching and what and how that student needs to learn. She's the best.
John
I highly recommend Abbey to the serious bass player. Highly qualified with a Master's Degree, and with a natural talent for teaching, Abbey is one of the best teachers I've ever seen and motivates me to do my best. Always making sure you understand what's being taught and tailoring the lessons to your individual needs and aspirations. Abbey can find problems even you might not be aware of and helps work out a solution.

"This is the guy you are looking for.

At 42 I finally got around to buying my first guitar (no musical background other than fan) and set about teaching myself with books and videos. 10 months later I realized that in spite of working at it every day I was going to get to the 1-year mark and not be able to play a single song all the way through (of the 70's and 80's hard rock that I love, I could play "Twinkle-Twinkle Little Star" pretty well). I was rapidly becoming "that guy" who can play sloppy intros to 300 songs, but nothing else.

I looked around the web, and settled on Ahmad because of his credentials and reviews, and I could not be happier with my choice.

The thing that makes Ahmad special is that he put as much effort into becoming a great guitar teacher as he did in becoming a great guitar player. Every lesson is tailored exactly to my ability at that time. If ever I have had particular trouble with something Ahmad is ready with additional material, alternate ways to learn it, different ways to explain it. No matter what the technique or concept, Ahmad has seen this mistake before and knows just what to do. Some days I leave with many pages of material to master, and some days just one or two. It is all about how slowly or quickly I am picking up the new thing, and all about learning things the right way so that the foundation is solid when I am ready to advance to the next level. There is no schedule or competition (except with myself) and the only objective is to learn more and get better.

To show examples in action Ahmad routinely finds 70s and 80s hard rock for me (not every single note is from Guns-n-Roses of course, but if a particular concept relates to something in a familiar song from the genre, that's the one Ahmad will pick for me to master). You do not have to learn jazz! (I mean if jazz is your thing I am certain that Ahmad can teach you that.)

I really doubt that there is a player at any level (or in any style) who would not learn a lot from Ahmad (that is if you are prepared to be humble and possibly review some foundational material you think you know already... if you knew it, Ahmad would not be teaching it to you... he can hear that your timing is off, or if you didn't hit all of the strings in that chord, and so can your audience). (Once, while I was performing an exercise from the previous lesson, Ahmad had his back to me digging in his filing cabinet for my next materials and said "Did you play the fifth note with an upstroke?"... He heard that, it was supposed to be a down stroke and he heard a difference so slight I didn't even know I was doing it.)

If you are a beginner as I was, my advice is to commit to four lessons with Ahmad. By the end of that time you will hear that you are advancing, and more importantly you will understand where you were and where you are going. It might seem kind of basic at first (which is why I say to go with at least four) but it does not take very long to understand how much better you will be with strong fundamentals. If, instead, you learn to play badly, and you practice regularly, eventually your speed will improve... and then you will play badly fast which actually sounds worse than playing badly slow... all that work for less than nothing.

I have been taking lessons for about a year and half. I can play some Lead Guitar now. And I can play some real songs now. Even those 300 intros are getting tight, that is to say I now play them with the right timing, technique, phrasing and feel!

PS - If Ahmad says "it's time for the Harmony Classes", do it! Like most things Ahmad has taught me, I have resisted it in some way at first, and the harmony lessons are no different. Like everything Ahmad has taught me, the harmony classes have immediately made me better at playing guitar, and have provided a foundation that makes the next thing and the next thing and the next thing easier, faster, and better."

"Jeff Stetson is & has been my #1 recommendation to learn to play music for 20+ years!

Jeff was probably the best thing to happen to me as a teenager. I took bass lessons from Jeff for 5 years & in that time, my world of music expanded as did my skills in playing music. My lessons with Jeff prepared me well enough to enter into college level music courses. If I had an audition, Jeff zeroed in on what I needed to know & helped me get the gig. His study techniques work, if you work em'! He will show you what you want & you will get a whole lot more. Ask him about the Louie Louie/Wild Thing thread & you will get the history & learn to play R-n-R, the Blues, R.n.B, Funk. & the foundations of Jazz. All levels, all styles, Jeff Stetson is my #1 recommendation for learning music. Thanks Jeff, I am positive you helped keep me out of trouble & possibly jail too."
