Music has always been my biggest passion. I started playing guitar at the age of 10, and I haven't been able to put it down since. In grade school I started my first gigs playing in bands and spent all of my time outside of school playing guitar.

Coming from a family of eight where there wasn't much money for schooling, I put myself through high school and college gigging, and teaching.

I earned a music degree from Wayne State University in performance guitar, studying under the likes of Joe Fava and Charles Postlewate. At the same time playing extensive clubwork, shows, concerts, studio work and teaching.

My styles include virtually all elements of guitar. Rock, Blues, Metal, Country, Classical and Jazz.

In "2006", I opened up a guitar studio in South Lyon Mi, where I taught, along with lessons from my home.

I take a very serious, professional approach to my music studies and my teaching, but with a very humorous, and free-flowing concept to keep my students interested. I am very patient, and truly care about the progress of each student.

Each student that I teach has a different lesson structure depending on what the student wishes to accomplish. I tailor each lesson to help them move closer at a rapid pace to whatever style of music they have the strongest interest in. But because guitar is such a diverse instrument with many different established forms of technique, I do advocate developing proficiency in multiple styles of playing.

While I completely approve of learning to play music from TAB which expedites the playing of actual songs, I highly recommend that beginning guitarists learn to read music as you never know what they might end up doing with their knowledge. (Studio work, shows, teaching, or other scenarios where reading music is essential).

Starting to learn any instrument can be a challenge. But with persistence, guidance, and actual progress, learning how to play an instrument can be of the most rewarding experiences, regardless of your age. With my help, you or your child will be able to enjoy the experience of discovering how fulfilling playing can be.

Carl is currently working with Palen Music Center. He is also teaching at the University of Tulsa as an adjunct faculty member. He maintains an online music studio through TakeLessons, where he teaches several instruments privately and in group settings including saxophone, guitar, oboe, music theory, flute, clarinet, and piano.

Carl taught at Oklahoma State University as a Lecturer of Saxophone and Music Theory during Dr. Jeffrey Loeffert's sabbatical in Fall 2017. His duties included graduate saxophone lessons, graduate music theory review, graduate saxophone pedagogy, and saxophone studio class.

As a member of KU's Jazz Ensemble 1, Carl has performed with Dave Douglas, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Alex Sipiagin, Steve Owen, Gary Foster, Steve Houghton, Clint Ashlock, David von Kampen, Peter Epstein, Jeff Miley, James Miley, Roger Shew, and Brian Hamada, Brandon Draper, Rich Wheeler, Beau Bledsoe, Jeff Harshbarger, and Matt Otto. In July 2014, Carl went on a European tour with KU Jazz Ensemble I featuring Steve Leisring and Deborah Brown. Together, they performed at the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland, the Vienne Jazz Festival in France, and performed in several cities in Germany. Recordings by this band resulted in KU winning the DownBeat Student Award (Graduate College Large Jazz Ensemble Division) in 2015.

While at OSU, Carl was a GTA for the saxophone studio and music theory programs. His responsibilities included Music Theory I-IV tutoring and grading, sight-singing grading, piano labs, classical and jazz saxophone lessons, saxophone quartet coaching, saxophone studio Webmaster, and saxophone studio class. Carl was a member of the OSU Wind Ensemble and Jazz Ensemble 1. He had a regularly performing jazz trio and played in OSU's X2End saxophone quartet. The X2End quartet performed locally at the 2011 Navy Band Saxophone Symposium in Washington D.C., at the 2011 NASA Region IV Conference, and has won the state and division rounds of the 2010-2011 MTNA Chamber Music Competition. The X2End quartet went on to win the 3rd place prize at the national final round of the MTNA Chamber Music Competition. They also were the Division II Chamber Ensemble winners at the 2011 Hubbard Music Competition where they were awarded the 2nd place prize in the overall finals. Carl's final degree paper at OSU was a study of composer/performer collaboration. He traveled to Texas, Michigan, and Ohio to interview saxophonists and composers including David Dees, Peter Fischer, John Sampen, Marilyn Shrude, Joe Lulloff, and Charles Ruggiero. He has presented his lecture at the 2011 Navy Band Saxophone Symposium, the 2011 NASA Region IV Conference, and the 2012 OSU Single Reed Summit. As a member of OSU's Jazz Ensemble 1, he has performed with Bob Sheppard, Conrad Herwig, Wayne Bergeron, and Andy Martin.

While at SWOSU, Carl performed as a member of the marching band, wind ensemble, Jazz Ensemble A, saxophone quartet, and his own jazz combo named Five-Seven. As a member of SWOSU's Jazz Ensemble A, he has performed with Dan Haerle, Bob Bowman, Jack Mouse, Fred Forney, Janice Borla, Eddie Daniels, Pamela York, Lynn Seaton, Carl Allen, Dr. Michael Cox, Tom Williams, Dr. Robert Chambers, Dave Hanson, Drori Mondlak, Delores Williams, Byron Stripling, Frank Wess, Kenny Drew Jr., Dennis Mackrel, Bill Watrous, Rich Eames, Jennifer Leitham, and Randy Drake.

As an advocate of new music involving the saxophone, he has participated in a commissioning consortium for Alone Together by composer David MacDonald through Kick Starter. In 2013, Carl performed the premier of Cuento #3 by Nelson Ramirez Diaz. During summer of 2014, he recorded selections from Dr. John Walker's "The Alto Saxophone in the Attic," published by Carl Fischer. At the 10th Annual SDSU/Brookings Optimist Jazz Festival in 2015, Carl directed SDSU Jazz Ensemble I's premier of Dog, Tired by David von Kampen.

Carl is a Conn-Selmer Endorsing Artist. He hosted the North American Saxophone Alliance Region 3 (ND, SD, NE, MN, IA) Conference at South Dakota State University on March 17-18, 2017. On Saturday, April 8, 2017, Carl performed Dreams in the Dusk by David Biedenbender with South Dakota State University's Wind Symphony, directed by Dr. Jacob Wallace. On Monday, February 6, 2017, Carl performed the premiere of Lhotse for alto saxophone and percussion by Steve Danyew with Dr. Aaron Ragsdale. In April 2017, Carl performed solo tenor saxophone and orchestral clarinet in Ethan Bortnick's national PBS Special called "Generations of Music," which featured special guest, Peter Yarrow, from Peter, Paul and Mary.

The Method

1) Music is a language...... By: Victor Wooten.

Both music and verbal languages serve the same purpose. They are both forms of expression.
They can be used as a way to communicate with others, they can be read and written, then can make you laugh or cry, think or question and can speak to one or many and both can definitely make you move.

"Music wor
ks better than the spoken word because it doesn't have to be understood to be effective."

In some instances, music works better than the spoken word because it doesn't have to be understood to be effective. Although many musicians agree that music is a "language" it is rarely treated as such.

Many of us treat it as something that can only be learned by following a strict regiment under the tutelage of a skilled teacher. This approach has been followed for hundreds of years with proven success... But it takes a long time. Too long.

Think about the first language you learned as a child. More importantly, think about how you learned it.

"You were allowed to make mistakes."

You were a baby when you first started speaking and even though you spoke the language incorrectly you were allowed to make mistakes - and the more mistakes you made, the more your parents smiled!

Learning to speak was not something you were sent somewhere to do only a few times a week. The majority of people you spoke to were not beginners, they were already proficient speakers. Imagine your parents forcing to only speak to other babies until you were good enough to speak to them! You'd probably be an adult before you could carry on a proper conversation.

To use a musical term, as a baby you were allowed to "jam" with professionals.

If we approach music in the same natural way we approached our first language, we would learn to speak it in the same short time it took to speak our first language.
Proof of this can be seen in almost any family where a child grows up with other musicians in the family.

Here are a few keys to follow in learning guitar or bass:

In the beginning we embrace mistakes instead of correcting them. Like a child playing air guitar there are no wrong notes.

Allow young musicians to play and perform with accomplished musicians on a daily basis.

Encourage young musicians to play more than they practice. The more they play, the more they will practice on their own.

Music comes from the musician, not the instrument.

The early you start, the better. Kids age 6 or up are my best customers. They don't have adjust to anything other than to get their little fingers around a guitar appropriate to their size.
For young adults and people that tried play the guitar the old fashion way, here's my advise:

You will need to take a step back... or maybe two steps. Let me show you a better way.

These 3 things changes everything in how to learn or teach guitar. This is just to start the journey. I won't even mention custom songs or our musician club for you to perform your songs.

Remember that a language works the best when we have something interesting to say.
Many music teachers never find out what their students have to say. We only tell them what they are supposed to say.
A child speaks a language for years before they even learn the alphabet.
Too many rules at the onset will actually slow them down.
In my eyes the approach to music should be the same.

After all, music is a language too.

Perfect first session. Michael adapted to Rory's deep understanding of music theory but total lack of knowledge of the bass. He was thoughtful, patient, and adaptive introducing the bass and providing practice suggestions to Rory. I recommend Michael in the highest terms as an instructor for beginners and knowing his vast education and experience in the bass I must assume this travels though the entire range of students - beginner to advanced. About Kyle

Specific:
Being specific helps us breakdown skills, that seem impossible, into manageable exercises. I call it chunking. Once we master the chunks we put it together to easily play something that in the beginning seems so challenging.

Sequential:
That old saying, "Walk before you run", also applies to guitar! With your guitar playing goals in mind, I am always developing a sequential path, building skills that ultimately lead you to your musical goals. I
have taught students from their first lesson through to preparing for their shows in some of NYC's top music venues.

Demanding:
The sweet spot is so important in learning guitar just like any other skill. Play with less than 50% accuracy and you are developing bad habits. Play with over 80% accuracy and you are not pushing your skills. I strive to keep my students learning at the edge of their abilities, thats where all the cool stuff happens!!!

Engaging:
It all comes down to what excites you about guitar, what makes you want to wake up at 6am and practice! There are so many things to learn with guitar; it is very important that whatever you chose to learn fully engages you. Nothing is worse than learning something that you do not have a curiosity about!

Abut me:
It is my ambition as a guitar educator to radiate enthusiasm and inspire my students to obtain their musical goals. In my years as a professional musician I have gained insight on how to bring the best out of my students. In addition to performing, my teaching career has given me many wonderful experiences. I have spent many years in one of the largest guitar schools in NYC, where in addition to being a mentor to guitar teachers, I have prepared for and taught private lessons, classes, and rock bands to well over fifty students per week.

Bio:
As a freelance musician bouncing between Europe and NYC, I am extremely grateful to experience the joy of playing with many wonderful talents from around the city, country, and world.

Born in a small town in the Midwest, I grew up listening to a diverse range of music. Through my parents I was exposed primarily to Celtic, Country, Folk, and Rock music. Listening to artist from these genres of music aided in developing a musical sensibility that is continually reflected in my playing. In my teens, I was immersed in a scene that was defined by heavy guitar riffs and shredding guitar solos. Rock and metal music ruled over the local scene and would also overtake my musical interest for several years. Later, in my early twenties, I was exposed to jazz music. The new textures, sounds, and rhythms that Jazz offered, changed my playing forever. Later, I spent my mid twenties traveling the globe performing as a guitarist with recording artist from both the UK and USA. Traveling and performing helped to give me a better understanding of music and art. Now in my early thirties I enjoy teaching, recording, and making music with friends!

I should also mention I am grateful to have had opportunities to study music with many incredible mentors. These mentors have inspired and given me direction that has not only influenced his playing but also my views of art and life. In Michigan I studied with the talented classical guitarist Carlos De La Barrera of Argentina, as well as Jason Werkema, a wonderful talent and mentor to many. While performing nationally and internationally I was given the chance to study with some great innovators. Through their lessons, and music, they remain highly influential in my playing. I am grateful to have studied with Adam Rogers, Gilad Heksleman, Jack Wilkins, Julian Lage, Zvonimir Tot, and Aki Ishiguro.

If you’re like looking for an instructor for any level of guitar study, you won’t find one better than Kyle! I had the good fortune of studying guitar with Kyle in a 5-course beginner series at New York City Guitar School; then continued onto a fingerstyle class, and a 3-level Lead guitar series led by him. At every point in study, Kyle was an excellent instructor. Not only is he a consummate musician and a versatile guitar player, he also has all the qualities one would want in an effective teacher: Empathy for the beginner, patience, and a sense when it’s the time to nudge or challenge students to the next level or technique. Kyle is agile in his command of the class, in group sessions he can address each students’ needs or stumbling block in the moment, answer questions, but keep the class moving and on topic. Individual sessions are not self-conscious or daunting, as Kyle fosters a encouraging and focused look at new techniques; breaking material down into student's level of comprehension. Corrections are always edifying and done with respect. Kyle shows great examples of where a basic lesson can go in the bigger picture, often accompanying and providing progressions to practice that day’s material; so a class might feel like a little jam session rather than just repetition. All of this, and he’s also a very nice guy with a great sense of humor; class is always informative and fun. Five stars!

Kyle is fantastic! I took lessons with Kyle for about two years - He’’s an excellent musician and teacher - very bright and engaging with an easy-going style - he’s super-nice and makes leaning to play guitar really fun.! From learning basic chords and techniques - to advancing, building repertoire, and ultimately performing. - he has a super-positive and supportive style, and excellent music skills and knowledge - making him a great teacher!! I recommend Kyle to anyone who wants to be a guitar player - he’s the best!

Experienced teacher of 5 years able to teach all levels of experience. I am a graduate of The New School of Jazz and Contemporary music. While at the New School I studied with some of the masters including Reggie Workman, Billy Harper, Jane Ira Bloom, Matt Wilson, Dave Glasser, Peter Bernstein, Vic Juris and many others. Additionally, I was a tutor for three years in every subject so I know their curriculum back to front. I am available to teach Ear training, Sight Reading, Improvisation, Music Theory, Rhythm, Arranging, Composition, Music Appreciation, Guitar doubling on bass and much more. Payton has done a great job helping me grasp the material. He knows how to pinpoint what is giving you trouble and how to effectively solve it. Overall my playing has greatly improved since taking lessons with him and I would highly recommend.
