While instructing private voice students, I teach the functional approach to singing. This mindset allows the vocalist to focus on singing freely in all genres. I believe it is important to not only teach a wide variety of repertoire, but to also inform my students on vocal health. Along with a functional approach to the voice, I promote a safe and welcoming environment to make music in. If a student does not feel comfortable in the space they are in, then they will not perform to their fullest potential and I would not have completed my job. With some instruction, anyone can sing, and I provide the tools necessary to do so.

Mary is a lively, voluble person with enormous experience particularly in musical theater who enjoys working with students.
Initially and as the student moves along, Mary assesses talent and abilities and then continues to periodically reassess the learning in a manner that never ceases to amaze me. I have been working with Mary for six months and found her evaluations of my strengths and what I need to work on to be spot on every time.
What I esteem most is Mary's technical acumen, the techniques she learned from her teachers and mentors and her experience as a performer. Her keen ear and eye immediately pick out every nuance being sung that needs work. She answers questions about where "to go" in throat, mouth, tongue, torso, etc., demonstrating how to correctly produce the sounds, tones, and supported breathing in question. Voice teachers, of course, are supposed to do this. Mary does this superbly.
If you are seeking a teacher who knows her technique, especially in musical theater, I highly recommend Mary.

Hi Mary,
In my opinion, our session last night wasn't productive. My opinion is, you weren't really interested in teaching me. Out of the 60 minute session. I only did about 3 to 5 minutes of exercises. You spent 55 minutes talking about your past and present students, professional actors you know, show business, acting techniques and your accomplishments. You did talk about about the script that i would read and the emotion behind it, but that lead into more about your students and professional actors you know. it took you 30 minutes in your office to find that script, (which should have been done a head of time) then we went downstairs and another 25 minutes of talking before i could read it to you.

Towards the end when i finally spoke up about so much time being passed and nothing being done. You said you needed to see my personality so you can know where to start with me. That made no sense to me, how are you seeing my personality if you are the one mostly talking about your accomplishments and who you know and what you've done?
Why not pick a point and start there and see what my weak and strong points are? You also asked me the same questions you asked me on the phone, have you ever taken lessons before, why do you want to act, what do you do for work which to me just consumed more time.

What i found surprising and discouraging was when you asked me why would I take acting classes up here when there are some of the best acting schools in the world just an hour away in New York City? I wish you had said that to me over the phone before our meeting, I would reconsider taking lessons from you and just spend the extra money and go down to the city. If i were an instructor i would be grateful for anyone who sacrificed their time and money to come see me, and never ask why they chose me when there is better not that far away. With that said I have decided to cancel my remaining lessons with you please do not bill me any further.

Jason

PS Telling a person of color that they are a weird fit as a real estate agent in Croton N.Y, and would be a better fit in Brooklyn N.Y was discriminatory and offensive to me.

I found Mary on my search for an acting coach pertaining mostly to my upcoming drama school auditions. Her vast knowledge of this business is evident as well as her ability to help ground and craft your work. Each and every lesson was applicable towards my artistic pursuit. I consistently recommend her as a leading instructor in this field!

"So far with Barbee has been a fantastic experience, she is a really talented and patient teacher and performer, she is humorous which is good, you don't want a teacher that is serious all the time, although she can get serious when needed.
A really good person to work with, in general great! I truly love her teaching and her dedication to students."

"Fawn is a refreshing change and one of the best instructors we have ever known

After going through a barrage of music instructors, Fawn was a refreshing change. Our family has been taking piano, voice, performance and songwriting lessons from Fawn for 3 years now. My husband, myself and our son and daughter are her students and we all adore her. She has a lovely spirit and kind heart. She pushes us each in our own individual ways to be the best we can each be, and she always checks in to see how we are doing on a personal level too. She is such a positive person, her energy could light up an entire city. I don’t know any one that works harder. I think hearing her songs on the radio, seeing her perform and work hard at her own successful music career, as well as work hard at helping her students achieve their best is one of the things that motivates me to work harder. Fawn’s attitude is, ‘anything is possible if you believe’. Not only do we believe, but we believe in her. She is the best candidate for the job and this household deeply appreciates her."

"She is a great teacher!

I took Serena's lessons via skype and I wasn't sure what it would be like at first, but I loved the experience. I didn't even have to leave my house for voice classes. I really liked her because she really does try to help you out and makes the experience relaxing and fun. She has been in plenty of musicals herself and has lots of experience. I would definitely recommend her!!"

"Mary Elizabeth is a wonderful teacher. She has really helped me understand how important breath control is for my singing. She has also helped me to feel more comfortable with performing and getting into the character that I am portraying. I have also learned that sometimes stillness is the most powerful thing to express emotion in certain songs. Working with her as a teacher has inspired and encouraged me so much in learning how to sing. She makes learning vocal technique fun!"

"Professionalism is the first word to come to mind regarding Michelle. I have had over a decade of music and voice lessons with various teachers. By far, Michelle is the most professional educator. Michelle understands that our voices are like any other instrument, and has a holistic approach to the health of the body and voice. With her guidance I am confident I will sing healthy and strong well into my senior years. Personality would be met second word for Michelle. She is very engaging and as excited about my progress as I am. She inspires the confidence that we can reach our goals and beyond. This has been time and money well spent."

Want to Someday Star On Broadway? 3 Tips from an Expert

Dreaming about someday starring on the Broadway stage? Here, Los Angeles, CA teacher Meredith P. shares her expert tips to help you get there...   As an audience member, you can sit back and relax at a Broadway show, and not truly understand the work that it takes to get to that coveted stage and the tremendous blood, sweat, and tears that go into each performance. As with athletes, the only thing the audience sees is the end result. A lot of times it can be intoxicating and glamor …
