I do believe that classical piano instruction is the best way for anyone to learn how to play an instrument. Individual instruction encourages the growth of excellent music skills, and provides a foundation for music literacy. I will develop individualized programs for piano study, offering instruction that best suits the student. Private lessons can offer flexibility to learn the type of music students are personally the most interested in.
I am a highly organized, outcome-driven and motivated professional musician and educator with solid experience in the classroom. For the past 25 years, I have been employed with Amati music academy and seven years on the faculty of University of St Francis. I am very comfortable with all aspects of the current music syllabus, including teaching musical concepts (such as duration, pitch, dynamics, tone color, texture and structure) as well as performance, composition. I am fully qualified, with a Bachelor of Education in Music, Double Masters in music performance and education from University of Nottingham. I am proficient in classical, jazz and Celtic fiddle violin and possess solid skills in piano (grade 8-13) Royal conservatory system. Throughout my teaching career, I have been driven to help students achieve their very best. I str
ongly believe that music has the power to change lives – to enhance the social, cultural and spiritual lives of people, and serve as a profound medium of personal expression. Professional perform experience: The Chicago, Natalie Cole, Smokey Robinson, Three tours with Moody Blues, YoYo Ma etc.... The most important thing I look for in a student is communication skills, as well as talent. I like to nurture students and help identify their individual strengths, which is a key factor in shaping a musical persona that will make its mark both on and offstage. I do not advocate a uniform technique for all students. Physical differences and learning styles are always taken into consideration. Potential is as important to me as early achievements and experience. My goal is to help students become self-sufficient, discriminating artists. I discuss practice techniques often and develop individualized scale routines. I encourage initiative and expressive musicality as well as precision. Above all, music needs to bring obvious joy to the student, regardless of the difficulties.”

I am a 50-something-year-old business executive who began taking beginner piano lessons with Susan Merdinger almost 5 years ago.
Now, I am performing Chopin Nocturnes and Preludes and cherished works by Mozart and Beethoven to name just a few.
My Mom let me quit piano lessons in 1967 when I was growing up on the Southside of Chicago. I spent the next 45 years regretting it.
Now, as my piano teacher, Susan is inspiring me to make up for lost time.
At the end of each year, I am amazed at being able to play pieces I couldn’t have imagined performing 12 months earlier. This satisfying achievement comes only because of Susan’s character and competence as a teacher and her passion and enthusiasm to motivate me to practice 1 to 2 hours every day.
Susan is patient while maintaining very high standards with a commitment to excellence. She celebrates the progress of all her students to whom she is dedicated. While waiting for my lesson to begin, I have watched in amazement as she interacts with a full studio of very diverse students, young and old, boys and girls, beginners and advanced, even handicapped blind and autistic students. I’ve watched as she’s brought smiles to all her students after their recitals and audiences after her own concerts.
And Susan is one of the smartest persons I know who is expanding my horizons of the classical repertoire I play and appreciation of the classical music I listen to. There is a special pride to see your piano teacher perform solo or with members of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra at historic venues in Chicago or New York City.
I am a busy executive, but my piano lesson is the highlight of the week, even if that entails a 90-minute battle in Chicagoland rush hour traffic to get to my lesson.
That’s because my life is richer with the music Susan imparts.
I can’t recommend her strongly enough.

The first lesson with Susan was fantastic. My daughter is looking forward to working with her.
For the past two years, my focus in my music studies has been primarily in classical piano. A few of the composers whose works I have had the great pleasure of practicing as well as studying in depth have been: Johann Sebastian Bach, Claude Debussy, Edvard Grieg, and Franz Joseph Haydn.
My name is Paulette L., and I am a recent graduate of Elmhurst College, which is located in the nearby suburb of Elmhurst, Illinois. In May, I earned my Bachelor's in Music Business along with minors in Communications and Spanish.
Music has played a significant role in my life since I began studying piano at the age of 5, and it continued to play this significant role after I began taking guitar lessons at the age of 10. After about 7 years of piano studies and 2 years of guitar studies, I decided to take a small break from my overall music studies and instead place my focus on my academics and additional extracurricular activities. Shortly after beginning high school, however, I started up my guitar studies again through my involvement in my Parish's Young Adult Choir/Band. Shortly afterwards, during my sophomo
re year of high school to be precise, I was walking by the piano in the living room of my house and felt a small tug to sit down and try to plunk out a few measures of a slightly familiar song; ever since then, I have not been quite able to stop wanting to keep learning!
Throughout the four years I studied and enhanced my skills at Elmhurst College, I took private lessons for Piano, Classical Guitar, and Voice, and I have completed four levels of Music Theory. I am organized, hard~working, detail~oriented, accustomed to working with people of a variety of age groups and learning preferences, sociable, adaptable, easy to get along with, fair, creative, pro~active, and proficient in English and Spanish.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact TakeLessons and I wish you the best in your future music studies!
TESTIMONIALS "Jonathan's experience as a musician and teacher helped me advance tremendously in my ability to play guitar and understand music on a more advanced level. He's great at relating to his students and takes a genuine interest in their progress. " -Victoria L.
I have been playing piano since the age of 4 and have studied with various prestigious pianists, including John Weems, Nancy Weems, Alan Chow, and Anton Nel.
Current student at Northwestern University's Bienen School of Music. I have experience in cello performance, piano performance, orchestral music, and chamber music. I have studied with various prestigious music instructors and attended various music festivals, including the Interharmony Music Festival, Meadowmount School of Music, and the Aspen School of Music.
Ethan is a great piano teacher!
we just finished our 2nd session, and i enjoyed the lesson so much, i can’t wait to have next session.
he is passionate, detail oriented, and professional.
he is also flexible, and experimental in his teaching, eager to see me flourish, trying to get the best from me.
he has this uncanny communication skills to help me appreciate and understand more deeply a music piece i am learning.
most of all, in just 2 weeks, Ethan helped me to recover “fun” and “freedom” during my piano practice (:))
First time playing piano? Resuming after years (decades?) of not playing the piano? No matter your age or experience, you can always learn and improve!
Pop songs, jazz ballads, classical pieces, or movie/game themes, there must be something you are interested in playing and get better!
I have always been a self-studier in my entire life. Being able to learn with just books and your brain is a crucial skill to have! However, I know not everyone (and sometimes even myself) have the discipline and motivation to keep going during hard times. This is where a tutor would come in handy.
I enjoy tutoring (doing it ever since I was in high school for my classmates) and helping other overcome problems that I have encountered myself because it enhances my own understanding and makes me happy that my self-studying is helping others. Sometimes, my students even bring up alternative ways of thinking that I have never thought of before!
I focus on the fundamentals (technique, sightreading, playing by ear) to prepare all my students to tackle any pieces they want, whether it's classical, pop, jazz, ragtime.
I enjoy sharing my love of music by helping others embark on their musical journeys. I am a strong supporter of using a combination of aural training and sightreading to boost musicality and finesse.
In the past 6 years, I have taught students of all ages, ranging from children to seniors. You are never ever too old to learn the piano. You may not be the next Chopin, but with practice and dedication, you will eventually be able to play the mass majority of piano repertoire.
Strong fundamentals (scales/chords/arpeggios) are important, but I also remember to make music fun and not boring by providing diverse selections of supplemental (pop/ragtime/blues) pieces.
I offer private piano lessons and/or flute lessons to students of all ages (5 - adult), both beginner and advanced. I design individualized lesson plans for every student and I enjoy teaching all genres of music including (but not limited) to: Classical, Pop, Rock, and Jazz music. I let you play what you want to play. Is there a song you're dying to learn? Well, I'll help you make that dream a reality.
I began my teaching studio in Glenview, IL as a current music student having only a small handful of students. Over the years, I've had to relocate twice (to Chicago, IL and Iowa City, IA), due to my musical studies. In May 2013, I reestablished my permanent studio in Glenview, IL and currently have a steadily growing music studio.
I began my musical studies, playing the violin, when she was 7 years old. When I turned 9, I also took on the flute and piano, both of which became my primary instruments. I hold a Bachelor of Musical Arts Degree from the Chicago College of Performing Arts (Roosevelt University) and a Master of Arts Degree from the University of Iowa. I enjoy playing a wide variety of music, ranging from Classical to Video Game Music.
Over the years, I have participated in various musical ensembles such as high school marchi
ng band (flute section leader), symphonic band (principal flautist + piccolo player), symphony orchestra (principal piccolo player), chamber music groups, and university chorus. I have also had opportunities to be a part of intensive summer music programs abroad (for piano and flute) during my middle school years in Osaka, Japan and, later during my university studies, in Vienna, Austria.
"Adam is a wonderful piano teacher. He was patient, answered every question and made me feel comfortable since I was just a beginner. His instructions were
easy to follow and help me pick up things at a quicker pace. I look forward to continuing my lessons with Adam."

"Regina is very patient to beginners and will really take time teaching until she see progress. Being experienced with her craft, she knows children very w
ell and their she works according to their capacity. I recommend her to parents with children just beginning with piano."
"I took piano lessons with Daniela for 4 years. It was a very valuable experience. Daniela is not only very passionate about music, but is also an extraord
inary instructor. She assigned me many classical pieces that really pushed me to advance in my musical techniques and skills. Additionally, Daniela organizes two recitals every year for family and friends. If you are looking for a well-rounded instructor who truly cares about her profession and her student, then Daniela is the instructor for you!"
"My daughter loves her lessons and looks forward to them each week. That to me is a sign that she is engaged and learning...what more can you ask for!"
"My daughter took lessons from Ms. Clarissa for just over a year and a half, beginning in 2nd grade. We love Ms. Clarissa! My daughter learned so much in e
ach lesson, and was so comfortable with her teacher. Clarissa is clearly a very accomplished pianist, but her kind demeanor is really wonderful with children and new players. My daughter loves to play the piano and is always eager to go to her lessons. I have watched Clarissa's more experienced students play at recitals and am always very impressed by how advanced they are. I would highly recommend Clarissa to anyone!"
"Lydia is a great teacher! She selects great music for my level and offers me suggestions to improve my ability. I enjoy practicing everyday and she never
gets frustrated when I make mistakes but shows me correct fingering.
I began playing at 13 years old, and have taken lessons from many other teachers and now I'm 69 and have MS, she does a great job with me!"
"Chaojun is an amazing musician! She has excellent musical taste and fantastic technical facility. She is a great teacher for students of all ages!"
"Hiring J.R. has been an incredibly uplifting, fun, and educational experience. A far better experience than I could have asked or hoped for. I’m learning!
And excited for the progress, which does take an investment of practice, energy & time. He is extremely patient & flexible with how to cope with my needs (when possible) and super supportive: I’m almost 50 and paralyzed.
As corny as this sounds I’ve never known anyone with such a broad overall knowledge, experience and wisdom about music and instruments. If I have a question about my piano playing, or virtually any music question, he either has the answer or helps me find it if he doesn’t.
He is extremely knowledgeable and respectful and has more than earned my respect and gratitude.
Hiring him is one of the best choices I’ve ever made. The only regret I have is that I didn’t hire him sooner."
