You will learn posture using French or German bow. You will be guided by me through method books and use supplemental materials I create for you to advance. You will learn some jazz styles and how the bass works in a rhythm section. You will learn about chord progressions in songs. I've been teaching upright for 5 years. You will learn to make the bass sing as a solo instrument. Most of my students have gone on to play in jazz combos and trios. I want to be your next instructor.

About Mark
I NOW TEACH ONLINE LESSONS. I teach according to your individual needs. I only teach in my own studio. I do not travel anymore. I also have time to teach lessons every other week. You may inquire to me about my availability to teach every other week on Saturdays. I help you become successful on piano, violin, cello, viola, bass, guitar, or bass guitar. I help you learn the instrument and learn to read music with my own ideas using fun worksheets and songs you really like to learn how to play. I fill your voids with activities such as practice techniques, sub-lessons, and ear training. I guide you toward proper posture, tone development, and the ability to keep a steady beat. I help you develop your musical independence by tweaking lessons to help you succeed. I help you have fun learning to read music for your instrument using my materia
ls. I believe talent is not a factor in learning. Mastering an instrument is the result of effective instruction and step by step guidance toward foundations and skills. I love to teach private lessons because I believe in spreading the word to make the great gift of playing music available to many. It is an inherited right and gift to enjoy a lifetime of personal satisfaction from playing a musical instrument. I love to help students build confidence and make progress. I help them problem solve by going through problems with them. I teach "how to think" and how to become a life long learner of the instrument. I love the challenge of finding ways to help students become successful at every step of the way. I am excited and enthused to be apart of student progress. I am influenced by many 20th Century performers including Van Cliburn, Oscar Peterson, George Shearing, Erroll Garner, Yudi Menuhin, Issac Stern, Dave Brubeck, and Horowitz among others. I am passionate in my teaching about providing an effective solution to my student's needs. I am pleased to announce my teaching has awarded a cello student a spot at Del Sol music high school for the 2017-2018 school year. this student of mine passed an audition January of 2017 as a result of my teaching. The student worked very hard and followed my instruction very well. Congratulations!! I am also pleased to announce two of my cello students have both passed auditions to play in the Las Vegas Youth Orchestra starting in September 2017, September 2018, and September 2019. They both auditioned during May 2017, May 2018, and May 2019. Congratulations to both of you!!! There is also a viola student of mine who has passed audition for LVYO in May 2019 for the September 2019 season; Congratulations!! I also had a violin student who passed auditions for LVA (Las Vegas Academy) a couple of years ago. I have no connection to these organizations. These students all worked hard and followed my instruction. I can help you learn as well. Recently with the development of "octave" strings, if you have been split between learning violin, viola, or cello; these strings installed on a violin or viola make the instrument sound like a cello. It is really something. They are tuned an octave below, so they sound very low. A lot of cello music will have to be transcribed for owners of these instruments installed with "octave" strings. Videos can be found on YOU TUBE of these instruments played. They are ordinary violins or violas strung up with thicker strings to sound an octave below.

I am a professional educator who works with both children and adults, and has the patience to help them. I am a performer who has over 30 years of public experience in solo playing as well as ensemble work. I have performed at Nordstrom for nine years, and performed at many private functions. I have performed classical as well as jazz music as part as my performance experience. I have taught private lessons for well over 20 years. I'm sorry, as of Summer 2016 I do not travel to student locations. I teach at my studio as well as online. If you are among the many parents who home-school your children, you should consider music lessons for them. There are many benefits of home-schooling, but unfortunately students miss out on specials. Practicing an instrument can make up for that and also teach critical learning habits and personal skills toward learning in general. Give me a try, in my studio or online; I can help you learn.

*** Lesson Details ***
I believe in personalizing your approach to the strangeness of the instrument. You need to learn much about posture, and proper tone production within the first year. Method books are not "how to" books. You need a teacher to guide you toward becoming familiar with the instrument. You also need to learn how to listen to the sounds you make as you play. To develop "musical independence" you need to become musically literate, develop tone production skills, and internalize a steady beat. Rhythm and tone are basic concepts that must be mastered to maximize pleasure in playing your instrument. Learning how to problem solve is another skill I teach so you can help yourself toward progress.
I believe in using the instrument in daily activities such as playing "Happy Birthday" at family get together. Christmas Songs or Hanukkah Songs can bring much joy during December family parties.
A musician in the house brings much joy during holidays and celebrations; and the families are brought closer together. Memories are created and last forever. Playing an instrument is exciting and expresses what can not be said using words. I believe in teaching students based on their strengths, and building upon them. I am excited to help you learn!!

I only teach in my own studio and online. I do not travel anymore.

You can advance quickly if you are taught to listen to yourself and follow my instruction. I will guide you every step of the way to understand how music making works. Music lessons are fun and enjoyable. I am pleased to guide you through your learning every step of the way. My students in Las Vegas have had much success with my teaching and guidance. I will succeed where others fail. You will reap the benefits of my professional instruction. I bring a wealth of teaching experience, teacher training, and professional playing experience to every lesson. Most music store studio instructors have very little or no teacher training. Playing experience does not make one a helpful teacher. Failure to learn "how to" teach along with not earning any teaching credentials will not make anyone an effective music instructor.
I have experience teaching children and adults with autism within a variety of functioning ranges. They learn in their own unique style which suits them best.

All around wonderful teacher

Marcus is quite the gifted teacher. By far the best I've had the pleasure to aspire under. He is very easy to understand, and doesn't overwhelm you, taking time on the little things (the most important). He creates an atmosphere that is encouraging to learn in. We all know those teachers that create a stressful environment that inhibits progressive learning, as well as frustration in yourself. Marcus is certainly the opposite. He is also quite easy to communicate with--Creating lesson plans, setting goals, etc... In summation, a professional and a friend I would recommend to anyone and everyone.

I began teaching upright bass in 2009. During the 2012-2013, I was the orchestra director at Rolling Meadows High School. I specialize in either jazz or classical studies for the upright bass. Topics include: holding position and posture, left and right hand technique, musical notation, rhythm, scales/arpeggios, and repertoire.

About Dave
Dave K. began playing guitar at the age of 10. His influences include Joe Satriani, Eric Johnson, Guthrie Govan, Jimi Hendrix, David Gilmour, Jeff Beck, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Pat Martino, Pat Metheny and Scott Henderson. At the age of 17 he began teaching private guitar and bass lessons to classmates from his neighborhood high school. It was through this initial experience with teaching that he realized he wanted to make music education his career. Since then he has taught private guitar and bass lessons at Naperville Music, Rossi Music, Horizon Music, and the Plainfield School of Music. In addition, he has taught orchestra, guitar, and jazz band at Rolling Meadows High School.
In 2000 Dave graduated from the University of Northern Illinois with a degree in jazz and classical guitar where he studied with world-renowned fusion guitarist Fare
ed Haque. In addition, Dave has studied guitar with some of the best guitar players in the world including Dave Uhrich and Andy Timmons.

This year, Dave is releasing his first solo instrumental guitar album under his own name. In addition, he continues to teach rock, jazz and classical guitar and bass in the Chicago area.

As a private music instructor for the past 15 years, I personally have been granted the opportunity to teach a wide variety of music students. I have taught students ranging in age from 6 to 65. I have taught students from various ethnic and economic backgrounds. I have taught students with various physical, emotional, and learning disabilities. Regardless of the situation, I have always approached each lesson with the idea that every student deserves my best efforts as a teacher. This is because I believe that everyone, regardless of age, cultural heritage, ability, or financial circumstance deserve the opportunity to participate in the best music experiences possible.

I believe that everyone has the ability to learn to play a musical instrument and achieve success on it if they possess the desire to do so. This is because music is a vital part of the human experience. Music has the ability to turn ordinary life experiences into extraordinary ones. Think of everyday events such as: waking up in the morning, commuting to and from work or school, going through the work or school day, going to dinner with a friend or loved one, going to a sporting event, watching a movie or television show, or working out at the gym. Now, picture what these everyday events would be like without the presence of music. Without music, these experiences would be extremely dull and we as human beings would not be able to full appreciate the wonderful moments in our lives.

As a music educator, my promise is to guide my students through the journey of learning to play music so they can experience the joy that it brings into their lives and the lives of others. I promise to help my students realize their full musical potential. I will always treat each student equally with fairness and respect, provide the best possible atmosphere for their growth, and recognize that each student is unique in how they learn and grow.

Lesson Topics Include
Music reading (Tablature, rhythmic notation, and standard notation)
Technical mastery of the instrument (Proper left and right hand technique, chords, scales, arpeggios, etc...)
Rhythm and counting

I realize it was the first lesson but I was a little disappointed that we spend nearly the entire time on housekeeping items, like canceling and re-scheduling appointments. I think that could have been covered with an e-mail or handout. I also thought we spent too much time going over the differences between acoustic and electric guitars - considering my age and background. Would have liked to see him demonstrate what I was asked to practice before the next lesson instead of just being told to refer to the workbook.

My students can expect a loving, supportive, and encouraging atmosphere to learn a difficult instrument. We will go through the basics of hand shapes, learn how to navigate the neck with scales, and tunes that make the upright bass approachable.

About Oliver
I specialize in upright bass, jazz bass, funk bass, bass technique, and rhythm. I will inspire a positive attitude and good practice habits that will help any student succeed. I’ve extensively studied jazz, latin jazz, funk, rock music, hip hop, bluegrass, folk, and composition.

I can also teach guitar, piano, drums, and voice. As a mulit-instrumentalist, jamming with my students is a priority. Being able to play with other musicians is one of the best feelings you’ll ever experience. I’m happy to take you there!

Recently, I helped one of my bass players get a scholarship to go to Berklee Summer Camp to study music.

I am very excited to continue my teaching on TakeLessons. I look forward to helping new students to become the musician of their dreams.

I've been playing professionally in Chicago for five years where I play up
right for a classical chamber pop group called the Nine Worlds Ensemble and for a jazz group with Frank Catalano, a popular Chicago sax-man. I co-managed, played upright bass, and sang for an ambient-folk band, Sedgewick, based in Chicago. I've played upright bass in the Frank Catalano and Jimmy Chamberlin (drummer for Smashing Pumpkins) super group and Bowmanville.

I am currently dreaming up my own jazz-inspired project called the ohm trio. Working on my debut record under my solo name ohm. Be on the look out!

Hey there – I am so glad that you want to study bass! Upright bass is the cornerstone of my passion for music -- it is such a beautiful instrument and I love to help people find their unique personality on the bass. A little bit about me: I am a graduate of the world-renowned jazz program at the Jacobs School of Music and have been teaching for 8 years. I am well-versed in tried-and-true methods of establishing healthy technique, good tone, good time, and musicality on the bass. I have experience with many styles and genres and have been fortunate to play with artists from over 20 countries. My work has been featured in NPR’s Jazz Critic’s Poll, Jazziz Magazine, and All About Jazz, and I was recently chosen to be a cultural ambassador for the U.S. State Department’s global music fellowship (OneBeat). In other words, we can work together on whatever music really lights you up, no matter the style! Whether you are just beginning or are already advanced, there's so much we can do ...

About Hannah
I hold a degree in Jazz Studies from the Jacobs School of Music, where I focused especially on Afro-Cuban music, thanks to the tutelage of Latin Jazz giants Michael Spiro and Wayne Wallace! My jazz background also gave me rigorous training in music theory and history.

My performance career is highly diverse! You like folk? I’ve played with Chicago’s beloved Al Scorch and Della Mae’s guitar star, Courtney Hartman. You like hip-hop? I play and record with artists at Classick Studios, where Chance The Rapper, SZA, and No Name make albums. Indie rock? Part of what got me into bass was underground/DIY scenes—I love playing a good basement show! How about jazz? I’ve done everything from standards gigs at hotels to composing for experimental groups like The Liberation Music Collective.

I’ve also had the pleasure to play with musicians from ov
er 20 countries. One of the most rewarding experiences of my life was being a Fellow for OneBeat, a program run through the U.S. State Department that brings together international musicians to compose, record, and tour together. I have learned so much about the power of music through my relationships with artists from all corners of the globe.

I believe in “Occam’s Razor” bass playing – finding a simple, elegant solution to the “problem” at hand, whether that “problem” is finding a good fingering for a fast-moving melody, finding a tasteful yet interesting bassline for a funk groove, or improving your right-hand speed so you can finally play that one Tool song you’ve always loved. The “Occam’s Razor” approach builds your instincts and helps you become a solid, expressive bassist that everyone wants to play with!

No matter where you are in your musical development, I can be your ally. I have experience teaching all ages and experience levels and can help you go deeper in whatever music lights you up. I can offer advice about musicianship too – how to start a band, how to rock an audition for your school’s jazz ensemble, or how to make the most of a recording session.

Bass is a physically demanding instrument, and over my career I have recovered from multiple injuries. I am committed to helping you develop healthy technique that prevents and manages injuries and adapts to your physical conditions. I try to offer compassion AND solutions to students who struggle physically with their instrument or face health challenges. I’ve been there too, and I’m here to help.
