I'm an experienced and dedicated cellist, having played with Orchestras and Chamber groups throughout my state. My lessons are focused on relaxation, and am as laid back or strict as the student needs. Whether you're a beginner or advanced, shooting to be a church player or a pro, I have taught students for that and am the teacher for you.

About Nicholas

Nicholas is a professional cellist that has studied since the age of 9. He has now been teaching the cello, viola, and violin for over a decade for students of all ages, beginner to pre-college level. Throughout Nicholas’s career, he has been an active member of Honors Orchestras, Youth Symphon

This far he is a very knowledgeable and professional person. Unfortunately we found that my cello was lacking due to defects in build and so now I have to get a replacement which I am hoping does not hinder our lessons. He has been very helpful with getting me sites to get material and tools necessary for our sessions. Look forward to our next session and moving forward.

He is really good at helping you understand how to play the instrument in detailed but open ways. He is a font of information.

Let's get you playing the music you've been hearing in your head. Each week, you'll get a personalized practice guide tailored to your goals. I love playing and teaching the cello, and I cant wait to share that passion with you.

My teaching style is as slow as you need, as fast as you can go. Technique should always serve the music, so we'll focus on creating art and telling the story that you want to tell. I'll work with you to create a personalized study plan that is engaging, positive, and progress-oriented.

Lessons are open to anyone, even if you don’t have a cello yet! I have worked with everyone from beginning students learning the basics of holding the bow to advanced players & colleagues looking for a discerning ear.

I generally recommend 45 minutes for beginners, but there's no time limit; I love to dive into details and can work as long as you can!

This year, I founded my teaching studio HelloCello, and I'm so excited to

My experience taking cello lessons from Claire was such a positive one! I decided to learn cello as an adult, with no prior knowledge at all. Claire helped me familiarize myself with the instrument, explained how to care for it, taught posture, technique, etc., all through virtual lessons. She is Very personable, patient, and knowledgable. I highly recommend taking lessons from her!

Cello:
A bowed or plucked string instrument with four strings tuned in perfect fifths. The strings from low to high are generally tuned to C2, G2, D3 and A3, an octave lower than the viola. It is a member of the violin family of musical instruments, which also includes the violin and viola and the double bass. The cello is used as a solo musical instrument, as well as in chamber music ensembles (e.g., string quartet), string orchestras, as a member of the string section of symphony orchestras, and some types of rock bands. It is the second-largest and second lowest (in pitch) bowed string instrument in the modern symphony orchestra, the double bass being the largest and having the lowest (deepest) pitch. My lessons always start out with the basics! We start out by learning notes by plucking the strings and then the bow is soon incorporated. The goal is to eventually learn all the notes on the fretboard and also learning how to read and play chords. As the student progresses ...

Extremely knowledgeable! Karen is a superb guitar instructor. Honestly, I was struggling. Discouraged! She helped me understand my strengths and weaknesses, and moved me from beginner to intermediate in a matter of months. If you’re getting tired of learning from YouTube and smart phone apps, let Karen kick start your guitar playing. You’ll be glad you did. Thanks Karen!!

This teacher misrepresented her ability to teach the C system chromatic button accordion. I don't believe that she has ever played one. I asked her before purchasing a set of classes if she knew this instrument and was competent to teach it, and she said she was.

She didn't have one, so she could never demonstrate anything I asked about. She didn't know the key layout. She didn't know the conventions for numbering fingers. She didn't know the basic home key scale pattern.

I waited until I'd finished four classes with my new teacher before writing this so I'd have a good basis for comparison. He is immensely better at teaching this than she was. It further convinced me that she never should have represented herself as competent to teach this particular instrument.

As a teacher, I enjoy cultivating joy and curiosity through cello and believe in creating a warm, open environment for students to develop into inquisitive lifelong learners! While I work with students individually to come up with their own goals, some of the core objectives I have for my students is to develop solid technique and tone quality as well as expression and satisfaction through creating music. I use a variety of tools for learning from standard technique books and classical repertoire to fiddle tunes and rote learning. I believe every child and adult is musical and am excited to explore the cello with you!

Maria is wonderful. I am an adult first-time learner, and I couldn't imagine a better teacher. Maria is patient and funny but also extremely organized and attentive to accuracy. The beauty of her own cello playing stuns me every time. I found her by accident, and feel extremely lucky. Highly recommended.

Maria is so helpful, got down to business and now I have plenty to practice before my next lesson. I am grateful she feels comfortable having me in her home studio for instruction. I would find ZOOM meetings quite difficult since I am truly a beginner.
Thank you, Maria!

I provide a fun experience of learning to play and share music. My philosophy in working with students is to curb their interests with my vision for their success with technique and musicality. I want my student to not only become good cellist, but also enjoy music on a theoretical and historical level. My overall goal is to make a connection with people that will last and music can be an outlet for growing as a person.

About Carrie

Carrie recently relocated back to Davis California from Ann Arbor Michigan where she freelanced and taught cello at schools and in her private studio. After finishing her masters at Florida State University, she has performed with the Jackson Symphony, South West Symphony Orchestra, and West Symphon

"Jessica is wonderful! I began studying the cello as a quite older student - in my 50s - and have had a few teachers over these last 15 years. When teaching an adult student, the teacher has to understand that our lives, schedules and demands are quite different that those of a young person. Jessica's patience, persistence and genuine good humor in the face of my busy life is beyond admirable. Even though I am quite challenged in finding practice time, she "puts up" with me and my showing up to lessons with minimal preparation. I've accepted that I'm never going to be the great cellist of my dreams, but Jessica is facilitating my learning to enjoy playing this wonderful instrument that I've had a deep love affair with for many years. I can't thank her enough."

Is There Such Thing as a Left-Handed Cello? How to Play as a Leftie

Handedness is the sense that one hand is more dexterous or coordinated compared to the other. Researchers usually determine an individual’s handedness by observing which hand is used to write or eat. Although the causes of handedness are not fully understood, about 10% of the population is left handed or ambidextrous according to Dr. M.K. Holder, a researcher and specialist on handedness. Many left handed students wonder if they will need a specialized instrument in order to learn to play …

Is Cello Hard to Learn? Read THIS Before Taking Lessons

Many beginning musicians wonder, “Is cello hard to learn?” The process of learning the cello is not difficult, but it’s important to keep in mind that the cello is not an instrument of instant gratification. It does require focused, daily practice time and a good teacher to guide you along the way. How far you progress with cello is a direct result of the amount of quality time you put into practicing the instrument. Even someone who puts in just 30 minutes a day will notice a signi …
