Bass is my primary instrument. Upright is a great new challenge for any electric player.

About Ross
I am a Philadelphia native and current Portland transplant. I play a lot in the PDX jazz scene and am also the bassist for local Portland groups Crow Daddy (@crowdaddyband) and The Renegade Gospel Band (@renegadegospelband).

Before moving to Portland I earned my Bachelor's degree in jazz performance from Temple University in 2013, I went on to earn my master's degree in Jazz Performance from Rutgers University in 2015, and then went on to have a 4 year career as a music director for large production companies and cruise lines.

After a steady 4 years of traveling and directing music programs I chose Portland as a place to finally settle and move forward with my music career. Teaching has always been a major part of who I am and what I am passionate about.

I of course teach bass both electric and upright, but am also very comfo
rtable teaching guitar, theory, and songwriting.

Send me a message any time if you have questions about my music, career, and teaching experience.

Ross totally knows his stuff. He can teach rock, jazz, blues, heck even classical bass. He has a masters degree in Jazz with a focus on the bass. His teaching style is very friendly and supportive. He has been involved in teaching the bass for years ( along with guitar, piano, etc. and knows music theory like a pro ) in addition to other music profession jobs centered on conducting, teaching and performing.

It is my goal as a teacher to give you the tools to play music but more importantly to create music.

My Teaching Philosophy

Left Hand-
Scales and arpeggios our the bedrock of music. They are the foundation of everything harmonically and melodically. We will begin with learning our major, minor and pentatonic scales and corresponding arpeggios. Once we have an understanding of those we will delve into our modes and more “exotic” scales.

Right Hand-
The right hand is our time machine. It gives us the ability to play in time and with groove and feel. We will work on rhythmic studies string crossings and practicing with a metronome. Remembering music is harmony, Melody and rhythm working as one.

For those who are new to playing music the hardest thing for some to master is rhythm/time keeping. It is the black and white right or wrong of the music world. Often times our want to progress quickly is hampered by skipping over the basic building blocks of rhythm and ...

About Steven
Steven F offers instruction for electric or acoustic bass guitar, upright bass, mandolin and ukulele as well as music theory.

Steven F., a professional musician and teacher for over fifteen years, graduated cum laude with a performance degree in the upright bass from The Ohio State University where he studied and performed everything from classical to classic rock. Indeed, from the blues to bluegrass, from rock to classical, he has done it all. He currently plays with The Spikedrivers, Fox ‘n’ Hounds Bluegrass Ensemble, and Neil Jacobs' American Gypsy. He recently performed with guitar legends GE Smith and Jorma Kaukonen and David Grier.

In addition, Fox is a gifted instructor with over twelve years of experience. He incorporates music theory and technique in lessons so his students are able to go farther than just readin
g music. They learn to create music, to play with other musicians, and to play by ear.

Although Fox is serious about music he is able to keep lessons entertaining for students, and offers instruction in many musical genres. Many of Fox’s students have gone on to study music in college and have started successful careers in the field.

I can’t believe how much material was covered in a 60 minute lesson! Steven was engaging and encouraging. My 16 year old son learned a lot and had a great time doing it. We are looking forward to future lessons!

My primary goal with all of my students is to help them make great music that is true to themselves. I also try to stick with a sound-before-symbol approach to learning music. What this means for my teaching is a focus on training both the ears and technique. I always prefer a more personalized approach to teaching, working with students to find repertoire that speaks to them and improves their musicality and technique.

About Isaac
My Values
As I’ve developed my teaching style over the last ten years, I’ve found myself zeroing in on a few key qualities I want to cultivate in my students and in my self including great ears, a high proficiency on the instrument, and a strong and interactive sense of musicality. At the center of my practice is a devotion to personal growth and discovery. For myself, I find this by teaching in a variety of contexts from teaching in classrooms at a private school to sharing volunteer masterclasses around the world. No matter the context it is my goal to share with my students and those who will listen the lessons I have learned through music and to help them uncover their own. As such I am constantly striving to inspire personal connections to the music and a stronger sense of community

My experience
I have consistently taught priva
te lessons to bass players, pianists, and other instrumentalists since 2010. I have also had the opportunity to teach over a dozen jazz clinics, including two separate visits to the annual Panama Jazz Festival to teach and perform. At Berklee I studied music pedagogy and continue to research pedagogy on my own time. Recently through a teacher training program I have participated in workshops learning the basics of Suzuki, Kodály, and Orff Shulwerk methods. I currently teach music classes part time at a Manhattan private school and part time in an El Sistema based after school strings program.

My students have gone on to win statewide competitions such as positions in the All State jazz band and orchestra. Some have participated in music festivals around the country such as the Newport Jazz Festival and others have continued on to study at the collegiate level at schools including McGill University and Northwestern University.

Isaac is an excellent teacher and is highly recommended. His method is not centered on drills, music reading or repetition, but rather on getting an understanding of how the notes, chords work together. In so doing, the student gets a great understanding of theory and it opens the door to improvisation. In addition he's very patient with folks such as myself who don't come to class with a deep understanding of music theory.

Jonathan taught me when I was around middle school age and has left a lasting impression on how I approach the bass and music 10-ish years later. Under his tutelage I learned music theory, techniques, and all sorts of different genres and styles.

His lessons were always very professional. I always felt challenged, but not overwhelmed, by the material being taught. He also made it easy to be interested in the lessons; he would always ask if there's any song or genre that I wanted to learn and that sort of thing.

Overall, definitely a 5/5 top shelf educator and musician.

I have been playing guitar and bass for over 15 years, which has been a remarkable and rewarding musical journey. After teaching myself for seven years, I decided to attend the Atlanta Institute of Music from which I graduated with a performance-based scholarship. My own approach to learning has helped me to teach students from all various backgrounds as I am able to adapt my lesson plans to accommodate either a more classical or more colloquial approach to effectively relate the material to each student effectively. My lesson plans are structured around the goals that students set for themselves, which I then show them how to achieve in a practical manner. This is a great life skill that will extend even beyond music. The only goals that cannot be reached are the ones you tell yourself repeatedly "I can't", which is the only real barrier to learning and creating.

I specialize in classical upright bass. I have 8+ years of private teaching experience and am comfortable with all ages and skill levels. Want to challenge for a higher chair in your orchestra class? Easy. Need help prepping for All-State? I'm your guy. Do you have college auditions coming up? No problem. My approach promotes comfort in all positions on the fingerboard and overall healthy posture.

About Zach
Like a lot of people I know, I began playing bass in 6th grade orchestra. In middle school, I began to think that music was more than just a passing interest. The orchestra took the morning off from regular classes to have extra rehearsal time before a feeder school tour that afternoon. I thought it was the best day ever since I got to just play bass all day! In high school, I took every opportunity to study music I could. I joined the jazz band, took AP music theory, played the musicals, got into All-State, and joined the youth symphony. I went on to earn a BM in music education and now play and teach bass professionally.

I can be seen playing with such groups as the Anchorage Symphony, Anchorage Opera, and am a founding member of the Anchorage Bowl Chamber Orchestra. I've taught bass workshops for various ensembles in the Ancho
rage School District and at Birchwood String Camp. My students have been admitted to the Alaska All-State Orchestra, All- Northwest, and have received top marks at solo and ensemble festivals.

I'm so excited to work with you! Please reach out with any questions or to see if we'd be a good fit!
