Hello future viola students -- welcome!!

In addition to playing violin, I've also played viola in duets, trios, and string quartets, and is another beautiful instrument to learn.

My approach includes providing the student with a good foundation of both left and right hand technique using a combination of method books which reinforce note-reading and proper posture for the first year. We then start adding solo pieces from the Classical repertoire and supplement those with modern pieces from Pop, Latin, Jazz, or any other style the student would like to learn.

Students always get a well-rounded education with me on the string instruments I teach AND are prepared to play either alone, or in groups when the opportunity presents itself.

Happy Practicing!

About Nicolas
Hello there, future string players and welcome to my profile!!

I was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and raised in Miami, FL. I started my musical career at the age of 8, singing in chorus, playing the recorder, and shortly afterwards moving to the guitar, and the violin.

When I was 15, I was nominated for a James L. Knight Award in Music, and I performed as a violin soloist with the Miami Beach Symphony Orchestra, and the Greater Miami Youth Symphony playing Mozart's Violin Concerto No. 3 in G major. One of my most memorable experiences when I was a kid! In high school, I formed my own string quartet and we would perform all over the South Florida community especially at hospitals and for the elderly. At 16 years old, I was also given an internship with the New World Symphony, conducted by Michael Tilson Thomas, for about 2
years. During this time, I was able to take lessons from master violinists such as Marc Thayer and Glen Cherry. During this time, I was given the opportunity to perform with the New World Symphony at 17 years old for pops concert conducted and performed by Chuck Mangione in El Doral, FL.

I later on accepted a scholarship for violin performance at the University of Miami for my Bachelor of Music, and earned my Master of Music from Florida State University. I also taught string orchestras for 10 years at Ruth K. Broad Bay Harbor K-8 Center, South Florida Youth Symphony as conductor (and now composer!), and conductor of the Greater Miami Youth Symphony. I was appointed Assistant Conductor of the Alhambra Orchestra for two seasons under the guidance of my high school orchestra teacher, Mr. Reginald Nicholson (1947-2011). It was here where I was able to work on my compositions, orchestrations, and conduct a fine group of musicians.

I now live in sunny Los Angeles, in the Sherman Oaks area, and I'm loving the new change. I am eager to share my knowledge with new students on various subjects such as learning a string instrument to learning a different language. Please feel free to ask me any questions.

I am looking forward to getting to know you and your goals for learning!

LESSON DETAILS
I have been teaching music as an adult, certified teacher since I was in college, but have done teaching as early as 15 years old.

I will help you create a fantastic technical base so you will be able to play with ease as your skill level develops, all while keeping the lessons fun and engaging.

MUSIC STUDIO
Piano, Violin, Guitar, Music Stand, General Teaching Aids, Recording Equipment.

TRAVEL EQUIPMENT
I can provide a music stand and basic materials but the student is expected to have their own instruments and to buy the music I recommend. I can recommend various vendors/shops where you can buy the ideal instrument for your lessons.

EXPERTISE
I am classically-trained musician that also specializes in Tango performance, Latin/Jazz, Rock, and a variety of other styles. I believe that training in the classical aesthetic will create a firm, solid foundation to crossover into other areas listed above. With a good dose of technical exercises, scales, and a variety of repertoire, my students always turn out well-rounded, ready to tackle almost any kind of music they wish to learn.

Thank you for stopping by and let me know what you would like to learn!

Nicolas is a talented musician who is a gifted and natural teacher to young children. My daughter is only three years old and it’s clear that he has a special bond with her. Since she was an infant, he has instilled in her an appreciation for music. Thanks to Nick, my daughter remains fascinated with string instruments and I attribute her ability to carry a tune to Nick’s suggestions when she was a baby. Nick’s mellow personality and ability to connect with young children makes him the perfect music instructor!

As a parent of a 9 year old, I could not be happier with the instruction my daughter is receiving on the viola. Nick provides detailed instructions on how to practice, makes it fun, and encourages her to do her best. I could see the progress she has made in the recent months since we started and we're confident that she's going to do amazingly well on her fall recital. Thank you, Nick!

Students can expect to learn the basics of holding and creating sound from a stringed instrument; parts of the viola; the string names; note reading; and to have a really great time learning!

About Lisa C.
After playing the violin for over 20 years, Lisa was inspired to share the gift of music with others by her teacher, Susanna Sonnenberg. Lisa is a member of the American String Teacher’s Association, and has attended the 2017 ASTA National Conference. She currently performs with the Edgewood Symphony Orchestra. Lisa has played in recitals, the Chartiers Valley High School Orchestra, and was accepted to the 2006 PMEA District Orchestra. She has studied with Larry Weiss, Linda Andersen, and others. Lisa can’t remember a time before she learned how to play the violin; it has brought her great joy. Her favorite piece to play is the Bach Double Concerto in D Minor.

At 8 years old, Lisa fell in love with the violin. Throughout school, she studied with private teachers and played with the school orchestra. At home, her dogs were a great audie
nce.

Lisa went on to study history at the University of Pittsburgh, and later earned her law degree from Duquesne. She never forgot her violin, though, and continued to play in her spare time.

Music adds beauty to the world, and finally, after years of keeping the violin to herself, Lisa decided to share her playing with others. Lisa teaches traditional, classical method. The method books she uses include: Essential Elements for Strings, Samuel Applebaum, and All for Strings, among others. She supplements the technical exercises with repertoire from the Suzuki series. Lisa enjoys playing all types of music, in addition to classical, and teaches these songs, as well. Additional music includes pop artists like Taylor Swift, classic rock, electronic music like Lindsey Stirling, celtic, folk, and just about any other type of music you can think of. As a teacher, Lisa strives to be positive and encouraging. She believes that music should be fun, so her main goal is to make sure her students are having a good time!

I have been teaching viola since 2008. I have performed on movie soundtracks and was a guest soloist with Hamline University Orchestra. I am certified in Suzuki Method and also teach traditional lessons. I've worked with students age 4 to adult.

You are never too old to begin! I've worked with beginners of all ages.

Playing viola is about so much more than just classical music and scales! Although we love scales. Scales are how we show off how fast we can play. In addition to solid fundamentals of technique and musicality, I teach a broad range of styles including folk/fiddle, pop, and movie and video game scores. You'll get to learn the music that YOU want to play!

About Alex
I am an award-winning composer and have been passionate about music all my life. I've been playing in symphonies for over a decade, have been principal violist and a featured soloist, and performed as a session player on movie scores. I've taught violin and viola since 2008 and worked with students ages 4 to adult. I am certified in the Suzuki Method and also teach what is sometimes referred to as "traditional lessons."

My daughter, Ada, was losing interest in her violin lessons and not making progress, so we signed her up to take lessons with Alex. This turned out to be the best decision that we could have made. Alex had excellent rapport with my daughter and was quickly finding important practice points for her to focus on. Even more important I was impressed with the multitude of solutions and exercises that Alex came up with to help my daughter get beyond her problem areas, and bad habits. On top of this, Ada was having fun, and was getting really motivated to practice. Alex’s attention to detail, excellent skill on the instrument, creativity with exercise ideas, and persistent yet friendly character were the perfect ingredients for a positive and productive music lesson experience. We would still be taking lessons with Alex if she still lived in our area for sure. (She is also an incredibly talented composer, which is a great thing for young musicians to learn about).

Alex is a truly gifted teacher. Teachers like her are rare especially when it comes to the arts. Not only does she make lessons fun but she also has the ability to put people at ease. Alex is also great at teaching those with learning differences. I Have extreme learning disabilities along with visual perceptual processing difficulties and thus have many blocks in place when it comes to learning things such as theory. No matter how long it takes me to understand something Alex is ever patient never giving up on me never getting frustrated with me. She has found many ways around many of the blocks that I have with theory. When I first began lessons with Alex I couldn't clap or count rhythm unless I had the main part. Since taking lessons with Alex I am now able to count rhythm better when I am not the main part. I would highly recommend Alex to anyone looking for a great teacher!

Experienced strings player (20 years on violin, eight on viola) available for eager students of all ages, from total beginner to late intermediate ability. I structure my lessons so that students explore their musical interests while building a strong technical foundation and good practice habits. I specialize in classical music with some experience in traditional music. I prefer to start students using the Suzuki books but have plenty of supplemental books and materials for learning traditional Scottish, Irish, and Old Time fiddling.

About Emily
I have been playing the violin for more than twenty years (my parents believed in starting young!). My music degree is a minor in Violin Performance from the University of North Carolina at Chapel, where I played with the award-winning UNC Symphony Orchestra, a string quartet, an indie/folk band, and various other ensembles. For the past two years, I have been teaching foreign language full time at the middle school level, which has been an excellent way to develop my teaching abilities. I've always preferred tutoring and small group teaching to a full classroom, however, and I am excited about teaching private music lessons.

I am primarily a classical player, but my interest and experience in traditional music (especially Celtic trad) have grown over the past few years. I learned primarily through the Suzuki method for my first ten
years of lessons, and this is my preferred method of teaching. If you want to learn classical or fiddle music, I'll help you learn! If there are other styles you're interested in (pop, Broadway, etc.), we can certainly explore those genres together--in my experience, students who play music they like do much better than those who play what they're forced to. On the other hand, the value of good technique only increases the further you get into any genre, and classical repertoire is an excellent way to learn technique.

Core aspects of my teaching philosophy:

1. Learning by ear. This is an incredibly valuable skill to have, and it's easier the sooner you start. If you play music, you should listen to music, a lot.

2. Being part of a community. If at all possible, I will help you find or set up group lessons, performance opportunities, or jam sessions on at least a monthly basis (though this may be trickier for online students). Having fun making music with other people often encourages students in their motivation to practice, desire to learn new technique, and knowledge of repertoire.

3. Practice. There are no shortcuts around this one. Like learning by ear, good practice habits are much better started soon than late!

Every student is unique, so I will tailor the lessons to you and make it fun! I'm passing on to you the training I received from the very best master teachers of the violin. Stringed instruments are challenging, but I believe in enjoying making music at every level, while establishing a strong foundation in good technique. For learning fundamentals of music theory and ear training, we will play various rhythm and improvisational games. I have extensive background in European classical music, and I've also done quite a bit of improvisation, some fiddling, and electric violin and viola. Whether you want to be the next Joshua Bell or the next Lindsey Stirling, I can help you improve your playing. I will help you sing, dance and tell a story through your violin or viola.

About Gloria
Born into a musical family in 1966, I have extensive performance experience as a classical violinist and violist, and I've been composing my own music since 2000. I am very grateful to have studied with some of the finest teachers of violin, viola and chamber music, and I graduated in 1990 from the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, one of the best conservatories in the world. I've played often with the Philadelphia Orchestra and the San Francisco Symphony, and I was the Concertmaster of the Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia for 6 years.

I'd like to pass on the knowledge gained from my years of playing in orchestras, chamber groups and solo concerts. My teachers taught me the most refined techniques of tone production and continually showed me how to make the music come alive emotionally and tell a story.

I've also play
ed a lot of music by contemporary composers, in groups like Network for New Music and Orchestra 2001 in Philadelphia, as well as Left Coast Chamber Ensemble in the Bay area. Some special tours I went on were with the Philip Glass Ensemble and with Tan Dun, the composer of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.

My own compositional adventures started in the the late 1990's when I started improvising with a DJ mix in a small club. Since then I have experimented a lot with pickups and electric violin. I've created surround sound collages, improvised music for modern dance, and learned digital audio editing skills. I am knowledgable about Pro Tools and Ableton Live. If you are interested in electric violin, looping or using MIDI effects, I can share what I've learned about these things.

I have two solo CDs of original music - one violin, one viola - you can find on CDbaby and bandcamp.com.

You can make music and be creative no matter what playing level you are on. I believe in having fun as you learn, and I stress learning by example and by ear. Reading music is good, too, but often that gets in the way of listening. We will build a foundation step by step and add on elements when you are ready. Also - I can help you be relaxed as you play. I have never had tendonitis or another occupational injury, thanks to good posture and technique. Body awareness is part of the process. Let's have fun- - you can do this!

NOTE: for students age 7 to 12, I require the parent to be present at the lesson and take an active interest in the student's progress. Also, the child must want to play this instrument.
