Not only do I have certification in specifically private lessons, but I have a very wide range of experience. I have played classical music, quartet music, new compositions, avant-garde pieces, and also in jazz and rock bands. I taught music professionally in public schools for 5 years, and I've been teaching privately for 7. I'm an active professional performer, as well as a composer, and the former principal violist of The Parker Symphony.

About Andrew

I love music, and I love teaching music. I have been actively involved in the music industry since 2008, performing in classical concerts, quartet performances, and even rock and indie bands. I love passing my expertise on and igniting a passion for playing in others.

Learning an instrument should be fun, and rewarding too! I am empathetic and collaborative in my teaching approach. I have studied different teaching methods, and draw from all of these approaches to develop a program of instruction designed to meet each student’s individual needs. My training includes the Suzuki and O'Connor methods, and I have worked with a number of great artists. I have taught in many situations, including in public schools and at summer camps in Haiti! In addition to teaching, I perform in a string quartet and with the Colorado Symphony and I have degrees from Oberlin and Yale. All that training doesn't mean that I can't be relaxed and down to earth.

About Helen

I have been teaching students of various ages for many years, while also performing with The Colorado Symphony and the Highlands Square Ensemble (string quartet). The process of learning the viola should be enjoyable. The youngest child can enjoy games, and novel ideas to keep them interested

Helen McDermott
Exceptional Violist, Masterful Teacher

Helen McDermott is an exceptionally talented violist who is also a masterful, empathetic teacher. She brings a truly unique combination of technical virtuosity, pedagogical professionalism, and psychological insight into the music studio. I know this from personal experience because I have greatly benefited from being one of her viola students.
Her vast experience as a professional violist gives her a wealth of technical knowledge, not only about how to play the viola but, more importantly, how to play beautiful music with this instrument. She has studied, and continues to study, different teaching methods, drawing from all of these approaches to develop a program of instruction designed to meet each student’s individual needs. She also connects empathetically with her students, creating an atmosphere of collaboration and mutual respect that alleviates anxiety, thereby allowing genuine learning to take place.
In short, her breadth and depth of expertise, in both musicianship and pedagogy, make her an ideal viola teacher who guides students on their path to realizing their full potential as a violist and as a complete musician.

I am a professional violinist and violist in the Boston area. I am a graduate of the New England Conservatory where I have studied with Miriam Fried, Donald Weilerstein, and Martha Katz. I have performed extensively throughout my life as a soloist, chamber musician, and orchestral player on both the violin and viola in a variety of professional ensembles including substitute viola work with the Borromeo String Quartet. I draw from this performing background to teach my students of all ages and abilities.

I currently act as Adjunct Instructor of Violin and Viola at Merrimack College, where I serve as a primary instrumental teacher to enrolled students. I have also acted as the primary violin teacher for Main Street Music, LLC, in Waltham. Additionally, I run a private studio of 5-10 students as young as 6 and as old as 60. Of these, some never touched an instrument before our first lesson, and some are serious conservatory-bound musicians intending to make a career as a performer.

Luther loves to teach. At every lesson he is there for you, ready to help you. He has an extensive musical background, after studying violin at New England Conservatory with Meriam Fried and Donald Weilerstein, as well as performing and studying at many prestigious summer music festivals, including Ravinia’s Steans Institute, the Perlman Music Program Chamber Music Workshop, the Norfolk Chamber Music Festival, and the Taos School of Music. In addition, Luther is an excellent violist, studying with Martha Katz, also at New England Conservatory.

Luther loves to answer all of your questions. He will analyze and dissect your technical questions about how to play the violin: concerning tone, bowing, left hand issues, and how to use your arms, shoulders, back and your whole body while playing the instrument. He can help you with fingering and answer your questions about written music. He will demonstrate and help you play musically. He is able prepare you for your orchestral audition, help you learn concertos and other solo music and help you with chamber music. Thanks Luther for continuing to help me attain my dream to become an excellent violinist!

I had my first lesson with Luther today. He is personable, informative, gave constructive feedback and encouraged me. I found his style of instruction helpful.
I’m looking forward to my next lesson with him.

It's a blaze to work with Luther! He identified my problem very quickly and provided concrete advices on improving the sound. His understanding on how beautiful sound is made is very clear and systematic. There are so many dimensions in the sound making for violin but he always breaks it down and works on each individual part of my postures and bowing. My sound is now much fuller than before! He also not only teaches violin but also how to think about music in general. I feel like I am constantly critically thinking on how I can experiment with each phrase after I take lessons with Luther. I will highly recommend Luther if you want to find a violin teacher!

"Rebecca teaches with the Suzuki method. She accommodates my previous experience with music, filling in some gaps and skipping over what I know. She also accommodates other needs: I take a lot of notes, slowly, and she waits while I finish.

In person lessons are the dream, but Rebecca works around the limitations of the internet beautifully. Her instructions are sometimes a direct how-to, other times about exploring by myself as I practice.

Finally, it's clear she loves the instrument. Now viola lessons and practice are the highlight of my day!"

However, Kendra's kindness and positive attitude assured me that I had made the right decision. She also is attentive to specific needs, and accomodates for different paths depending on individual goals. Thanks for all you do for me Kendra!"
