I've been teaching music for 15 yrs on guitar, piano, bass, cello and bass. My students have ranged from from 5yrs to 75yrs of age. I have seen many student go on to join orchestras, bands, broadway shows or simply continued their education to a university or college. Being able to read music profeciently has given me the opportunity to teach off many method books but like to use Alfred Method, Mel Bay and Frederick Noad Method books. I teach many styles ranging from classical, jazz & blues, rock, contemporary and pop. I do stress and recommend all my students to learn how to read music and usually by our second or third lesson they will playing simple songs. I am here to help you make music!
Knowing that you are looking for a instructor to teach you music puts a smile on my face. You see, music has been a part of my life since the age of 3. Some of my first memories are of me accompanying my father at home with his rehearsals or just singing together to have fun as a family. I believe music is a gift that unites people together bringing out our deepest emotions that words cannot express. At the age of 5 I received an organ and from that point on I embarked on a long life journey to indulge and learn more about music. In elementary, junior high and high school I was involved in any subject dealing with music. I joined school choirs, orchestras, bands, marching bands, jazz bands, musicals you name it. While enjoying all school music activities I was selected to join in honor county and state orchestras and choirs. In junior h
igh and high school I was selected to play for the Junior Pacific Symphony Orchestra, received scholarships to music summer camps, and was selected musician of the year. In college my quest continued with the Orange Coast College Orchestra, Praise Symphony Orchestra, Vanguard University Orchestra as well as guitar ensembles and college choir groups. I've also taken private lessons from Dr. Art David (Julliard graduate) in stand up bass as well as David Black (Pacific Symphony Orchestra) and classical guitar with Richard Glenn and David Murray. I've been teaching now for 15 years in guitar, classical guitar, bass guitar, stand up bass, cello, piano and voice ranging from 5 yr old to 65 yr old. My styles of music range from classical, jazz, rock, blues and contemporary. At this point I'm enjoying playing and singing in my church choir and worship team as well as teaching my two kids the joys of music. I hope you truly enjoy the joy of learning music whether it be through me or another teacher.
*** Lesson Details *** As a teacher I require all students to set time aside to practice. For without it, it is only wasting your time, your money and my time. I don't expect a total dedication to it but I do want to see some effort put into it. A little practice can go a long way and the more you do it, the faster you will progress and the more you will enjoy it. We will first start off with what you want out of music and the level you are at and go from there. Student can bring their own music either thru tabs, music sheet or just by ear but one thing I do expect is a student to learn how to read music notation. We will go thru the regular warm up exercises, material practiced during the week and any new music for the following week. Correct techniques in how to hold your instrument or voice procedures will be addressed. Music theory will also be part of the lesson as well as ear training. At the end of either 3 to 6 months you will have learned the basics of music and will be playing songs for you or someone else to enjoy. I will make it a total relaxing and enjoyable atmosphere but some dedication has to put on the students' part.

I am a professional studio player with a Doctorate in Music, and have played on hundreds of blockbuster movies including the Oscars and Grammys. I work with many orchestras and can teach you how to get work as a bassist. Also can teach jazz...

I just finished a series of online upright bass lessons with Dr. Norman. It's wonderful to have a lesson without toting the bass around town. Dr. Norman is impressive in skill and knowledge. There was nothing musically he didn't know, couldn't explain, or demonstrate on the bass. He has a keyboard at hand to play chords or emphasize a particular key, and he is proficient on that too. Dr. Norman is A++.

Tomas loved his first lesson with Dr. Norman. Dr. Norman provides a structured environment, something Tomas needs to thrive.
Acoustic Upright Bass is one of the most satisfying instruments to play. Smart, yet sensual the bass provides the link between rhythm and harmony, subtlety and physicality. Learn to groove and sing with one of the best instruments!

Long Version: Marcus B. is a performing and teaching artist specializing in acoustic upright bass, electric bass, guitar, and songwriting. Growing up in a musical family, Marcus’ entire life has been intertwined with music. Marcus began performing with his father at the age of four in churches and concert halls, singing and later picking up guitar at the age of 8 and then upright bass at the age of 13. Marcus received his Bachelors of Fine Arts in Jazz
Bass from California Institute of the Arts. At Cal Arts Marcus had the honor of studying under world renowned jazz musicians Charlie Haden, Darek Oles, Joe LaBarbera, and Larry Koonse. I am so thankful to have found Marcus as my bass instructor; he is the exact type of teacher I was looking for. His training and love for music were evident upon first meeting him. I have learned so much in the short time I have been taking lessons. He is a very patient and passionate teacher.

All around wonderful teacher
Marcus is quite the gifted teacher. By far the best I've had the pleasure to aspire under. He is very easy to understand, and doesn't overwhelm you, taking time on the little things (the most important). He creates an atmosphere that is encouraging to learn in. We all know those teachers that create a stressful environment that inhibits progressive learning, as well as frustration in yourself. Marcus is certainly the opposite. He is also quite easy to communicate with--Creating lesson plans, setting goals, etc... In summation, a professional and a friend I would recommend to anyone and everyone.
I focus on musicality when I teach any instrument. With the bass, that stretches from playing with strong tone and staying in tune all the way to thumb position vibrato and advanced bowings. I'm a classical player but I include jazz, folk, and rock in my lessons.
I'm an avid music fan familiar with rock (indie rock, classic rock, alternative), pop, funk, disco, and classical genres. Music has been my "thing" since the day I was born and I love connecting with people through their favorite music.
My lessons focus on empowering each student with the skills to play what they want to play.
If you want to have a good time playing great music, you've come to the right teacher!
*** Lesson Details *** You and I work on simple exercises that help get you to the next level in your performance and then apply the principle taught to a piece of music you are familiar with. It's a great method that gets you playing what you want to play at the level you want to play it at.
*** Studio Equipment *** All of the instruments that I teach (guitar, bass, upright bass) as well as recording gear (Pro Tools
, mics, synths, etc.)
*** Travel Equipment *** Any instrument that I teach.
*** Specialties *** Classical Upright Bass and Music Production (mixing, mastering, Pro Tools recording, beat sequencing)

Colin is such a great teacher! He has been so helpful with improving my guitar skills, and he is teaching me all of the songs I’ve been wanting to learn, as well as music theory. Would highly recommend him!
I specialize in playing the upright bass, and I have a great time teaching it. I enjoy giving the student perspective on the instrument, explaining the entire double bass and the intricate methods I've used to master it, from Simandl to Rabbath.
I studied upright bass at two Midwest Universities, Northern Kentucky University and University of Cincinnati CCM. I have been playing the bass professionally in ensembles for years. I have experience playing jazz, blues, bluegrass, rock, folk, musical theatre and classical music.
My name is David and I'm a professional musician who just moved to North Austin. I came from Cincinnati, where I went to the University of Cincinnati College Conservatory of Music, taught dozens of students at all levels and played regular gigs every weekend. I have been teaching for over fifteen years, and I'm looking to get a few new students. I teach guitar, piano, bass guitar and even upright bass. If it's a tutor you are looking for I can also teach music theory and appreciation. I have a knack for teaching young people, probably because I was young when I started my musical journey. I've been very successful at inspiring a student's love of music and instilling the patience required to take on the challenge of playing an instrument. The first thing I like to do is get to know you, the music you enjoy and your goals. In a way, I l
ike to begin by letting the student lead. In addition to learning from you, I intend to present you with new information, to try and broaden your musical tastes and teach you how to be an active listener.
David has been so amazing with out 9 year old daughter. We have gone to him for over 2 years and she has come so far with her skills! He has so much patience. He's so kind and wonderful with kids. We were recommended by a friend and now we recommend him! He's high in demand for sure! We are sad we can't use him anymore due to scheduling issues. His prices are better than others too!

Quickly contextualized my needs as a student, and got me familiar with components and techniques of composition. The goal was to be able to help me more easily communicate ideas and designs to audio engineers at a company I work at. There has been a very observable benefit to this in the expedience of discussions, and fidelity of concept being engineered.

David is very kind and sweet to my kid. He has so much patient. He makes the class fun, entertain and way beyond expectation.
I have studied upright bass for 20 years. I am classically trained and studied under Barry Lieberman, former assistant principal of the Los Angeles Philharmonic. I went on to study jazz at the prestigious William Paterson University. I then spent the next 13 years gigging and teaching in a variety of situations in New York City and now Los Angeles. I have played a full spectrum of music on the upright and love to impart that knowledge to my students!
I believe this is a great time to be a musician. I have come of age as a musician in a time when music making and the music industry have shifted dramatically. There are many positives in this shift, with new oppurtinites opening up for musicians. I also see these changes not being addressed in music education. There are many things I wish I would've been taught when I was younger that would have accelerated my growth, and I love using that knowledge to accelerate my student's growth. I teach tonal harmony (as you'd learn in music school), focus on groove and rhythm (which is commonly neglected in music school), and an awareness of new technology (which was ignored when I was in music school). I believe because no matter which direction you are coming from, you will come to this intersection making music in this era.
Great teacher! Kellen has made me really excited about the guitar again.

Kellen is a great instructor. He explains musical ideas in an way that I qet quickly. I'll show him a song and he'll pick it up and teach it to me right away. I would definitely recommend him!
February 22, 2017
I had been playing guitar for a while, mostly learning songs and chord changes on my own. I wanted to take lessons to work on composing my own songs, and this is where Kellen really helped me. He had a lot of ideas and suggestions that were really helpful in trying to create a unique composing style. He's a trained musician, and it shows when he helps me with music theory and exposing me to lots of different styles of music.
I provide lessons in all styles of music including jazz, classical, rhythm & blues, hip-hop, and others. My students have won top awards in their respective school music programs including orchestra, band, and jazz band. I emphasize having fun, and allowing the student to discover and choose what music they want to learn, while still challenging them to get better each day.
I have been a professional bassist for over 10 years. I specialize in upright bass, electric bass, and some keyboard. I hold a Bachelor of Science in Music from Northern Michigan University, and studied with bassists Richard Davis, David Friesen, David Ziegner, and violinist Barbara Rhyneer. I have worked professionally with jazz musicians Dick Berk, Jon Mayer, and Ron Steen. I have played blues with guitarists Billy Flynn and Felix Reyes, vocalist Earl Thomas, and organists Doc Woodward and Paul Linden. I was also a member of the Marquette Symphony Orchestra from 2009-2016. I have played all styles of music from country western, to bar rock, to Latin, to pit orchestra musicals. My students have won top awards in their respective school music programs, and have earned positions in professional jobs.
Jonathan did a great job. I’m starting from scratch! Patient and very understanding. Loved it.

John is a very effective teacher. I took bass lessons and I have improved so much. John is an amazing teacher and I would recommend him to anyone looking to learn the bass guitar or upright bass.
June 28, 2017
Jonathan taught me when I was around middle school age and has left a lasting impression on how I approach the bass and music 10-ish years later. Under his tutelage I learned music theory, techniques, and all sorts of different genres and styles.
His lessons were always very professional. I always felt challenged, but not overwhelmed, by the material being taught. He also made it easy to be interested in the lessons; he would always ask if there's any song or genre that I wanted to learn and that sort of thing.
Overall, definitely a 5/5 top shelf educator and musician.
Have been actively playing and studying Jazz for 6 yrs. My first instructor for upright bass was the man who recorded bass for most of the Gordon Goodwin's phat band albums.
Hello, I have been studying and playing music since 2003 in and outside of a general school setting. I started on Alto saxophone and eventually moved to guitar and bass as my primary instrument. I have recently graduated from Cal State University of Long Beach in pursuance of a degree in musical performance with a specialization in jazz studies, which compiles teachings in classical technique and contemporary stylings.
"Great instructor. Focuses on the basics and provides a lot of encouragement which helps. Also, allows student to decide what they'd like to learn and allo
ws you to select the type of music you are most interested in.
"My Instructor was very clear and specific so that what he was teaching made sense to me, both in concept and actual playing the double bass. I would give
him 10 stars if I could."
"Just had my first lesson with Rachel and really enjoyed it. She is a very good teacher and I look forward to many more lessons with her."
"Steven is an excellent teacher. He had a lot of helpful information and made a great effort to assess my needs. I’m looking forward to more lessons!"
"Marcelo is great. He is very patient and flexible.
Along with being incredibly knowledgeable, Alex has the patience and communication skills that really make him excel as a teacher. As a
complete beginner to the upright bass (and music in general), I find Alex breaks concepts down in a clear, step-by-step fashion, so that it is not overwhelming. He also gives useful tips on how to be a better learner when tackling challenges, which helps make my personal practice even more effective. Alex is approachable and eager to answer questions even in between classes - I highly recommend him as teacher!"
"This is the first lesson I got to listen to of my son working with Nathan. Usually I'm not home from work. I am really impressed with how much he was able
to help my son improve so quickly. I wish we had started this much sooner."
"Super cool guy. A lesson with Eli is the perfect blend of his knowledge, expertise, patience, and overall chill. 5 stars all the way."
"I am not a bass player, but I am composing for the double bass. And so Dr. Norman's expertise in both the bass and composition makes him uniquely qualifie
d for my purposes. He certainly knows both musical endeavors extremely well. I am particularly pleased with his enthusiasm and interest, and his willingness to follow the lesson with additional resources he sends me. In addition, he is a good guy and easy to make friends with."
