I have been playing classical piano since 1960 and started with ten years of private classical instruction. I have taught classical piano full time since 1998, including music theory, proper hand and finger technique and methods to enhance ear training and ease of playing classical compositions.

About Steven
Have you always wanted to learn how to play the piano, guitar or electric bass? Or maybe you've just felt like brushing up your musical knowledge and playing skills? Now’s your chance to fulfill those dreams!

About Me: San Francisco Bay area pianist/guitarist/bassist; I've been playing music for over 50 years. I'm classically trained with a solid foundation and knowledge of music theory, and have over 40 years experience teaching, recording and performing. I have done session work and/or performed with members of Journey, Santana, Jackson Browne, Eddie Money, The Doobie Brothers and Greg Allman to name a few, and am currently teaching piano, theory and bass to Mike Dirnt, the bassist for Green Day. Let me take my education and experience and pass them on to you!

My main goal as a music instructor is to pass along my love and kno
wledge of playing music to my students, always vigilant for sharing shortcuts that will help the student to achieve their lesson goals faster. Some teachers teach only out of books. I am not such a teacher. Books solve the problem of learning music in generalizations and by their very nature, cannot take into consideration personal issues a student will encounter.

Most students are able to learn enough of the necessary mechanics at the first lesson to actually play something before they leave that lesson. This is important because they realize that playing music IS possible. I always enjoy the look on their face when they realize they have actually “played” their instrument at their first lesson.

I am not the sort of teacher who yells and screams if the student comes in unprepared. I realize that people come to me for a variety of reasons and I work with them with whatever they bring in. I am patient and if a student is not understanding a certain aspect, I bring into play alternate approaches. Not everyone assimilates information in the same way. Learning music should be an enjoyable adventure for the student and I venture to say that my students enjoy coming to their lessons. We have fun, and we learn.

My current rates are $40 per half hour, $60 per 45 minutes and $80 per hour, and believe me... you will get your money's worth! Also I should note that due to my current students, plus teaching at a private school in Sausalito and recording sessions, my time constraints only allow me to teach lessons out of my home studio in Alameda. Hopefully this will work for you as well!

A GREAT MUSIC TEACHER!
My daughter wants to learn to play an electric guitar. Then, we met Steven through Take Lessons. We initially planned on getting the guitar lesson first but Steven introduced her playing the piano as well. He is very knowledgeable in teaching how to play an instrument and does so in a way so that the child can understand. Thanks a lot Steven!

Steve is a rare find - an accomplished musician, a great teacher, and a genuinely nice guy. My 10 year old and I have been taking lessons with him for the past year, and our progress/improvement has been significant and noticeable. Particularly with my son, Steve is patient, supportive, and very encouraging, and he teaches at just the right level. He always makes sure that we cover music theory along with learning our favorite songs in order to get the most out of our training. My enjoyment of piano has increased significantly since starting lessons with Steve, and each time we leave a lesson he says: "Have fun with it!" I highly recommend Steve as a teacher.

I studied classical piano with 4 different high-caliber teachers for 6 years, and have taught at over 100 students to attain solid technique and proficiency. Skill levels I work with range from the complete beginner all the way up through advanced classical music repertoire.

Lessons are always a balance of fun and hard work, spontaneity and consistent practice, communication and challenge. I teach a combination of technique, with an emphasis on musical style and help to cultivate good practice habits. I also facilitate workshops and recitals to enable my students to perform in front of others.

About Peter
Whether piano, voice, songwriting/composition, music theory or music production, I bring all that I have learned and developed as a musician to the lesson in the interest of the student’s growth.

Whether we work in classical, jazz, or pop, We focus on what will directly fit your individual goals. We can cover the full spectrum of technique, theory, ear training, sight-reading, and performance. What emerges over time is tailor-made program suited to your needs and goals.

A little bit about my background: I have studied with over 12 music professors, both in the classroom and individually for 6 years at Saddleback Community College in Orange County. I’ve studied a number of styles while composing for and performing in various small ensembles, including:  world music, classical, pop, jazz, and musical theatre. I continue teach, produ
ce and compose music for myself and other artists as well.

I look forward to getting to know you!

My 10 year old son loves playing little riffs on the piano but really didn't want lessons for fear it would be too much like school. Peter has been awesome about tailoring the lessons so that my son can choose the Music he likes and move forward from his place of interest. Peter is a skilled and gifted pianist, and my son is totally inspired to keep playing and put in the work to improve.

I have been working with Peter for a little over a year and although I'm moving away, I will be continuing my sessions with him over video. Over the past year, I've had the most incredible mentoring experience with Peter and would highly recommend him to students of all ages. I used to play piano as a kid and quit when I was in middle school, and Peter has helped me regain, maintain and build on my skills. He takes measures to keep me accountable in my practice and also nurtures and encourages me creatively -- his experience as a composer comes in handy and we have dope jam sessions. In addition to his musical teaching practice, Peter is also training in somatic and trauma healing modalities that infuse his work with students with care and attunement. I know some parents who work with him keep him around their kids as a life coach and buddy as well as a music teacher. He's the best and I will miss seeing him every week in person!

Peter has taught my 11yr old son so much! The Focus is on the fundamentals but he is flexible and fun which support creative learning and keeps my son engaged! A great instructor that is very reasonably priced and it is convenient to have such a great teacher come to the house, many others we looked do not offer that kind of service.

I am both patient and enthusiastic as a teacher. I love music, and enjoy the opportunity to share my love of the piano with my students. Once I have determined the student's level, I find music that will help them progress towards a higher level.

About Lella
I studied Musicology and Piano Performance at the Shandong Normal University School of Music, where I graduated with my BA in 2005. I taught music and established a band at a property management institute while a student there, and established my own practice after I graduated. I came to the United States in 2013, where I have continued to play piano and have joined a local band. I am happy to continue sharing my love of music with my students here.

I began tutoring Mandarin in January 2015. As a native speaker, I can guide you to a very high level, and help you learn to speak with a proper Chinese accent.

Please note: Online classes are available for Mandarin Chinese only. Piano lessons are only available in person.

We just had our first lesson and we hit a few bumps but my daughter has never had music instruction before so we're giving it another go next week to see if things go more smoothly. 3 stars above says meets expectations, and though it didn't, I just hesitate to give someone 2 stars based on one lesson.
Here are some details from class:
My daughter (K) just turned 5 but is pretty mature for her age and has expressed an interest in learning the piano so we signed up for individual lessons with Lella. At the start of class I mentioned again (I had noted it at booking time as well) that K has had zero experience with music instruction. Immediately Lella sat with K on the piano bench and started explaining treble clef sign, bass clef sign and what hands they relate to. Lella also has a thick accent as I was trying to follow along with her explanations with a little difficulty. She even asked if K speaks Chinese and I said "no" so she said "you're Indian right?" My daughter would look around from time to time while Lella was explaining at which point Lella would just keep seeing "Pay attention sweetie!" Then she asked my daughter to write the numbers 1-5 in a book and when she said she didn't know how to write the number 2, Lella laughed and said "you know, but you forgot right" so I spoke up and explained "no she has not been taught to write her numbers yet, but she can read/recognize them" to which Lella seemed very surprised, so I felt the need to say, "she's still in preschool. But if you write them she'll be able to tell you what they are." So then Lella switched to counts, explaining about the values of different notes. She asked my daughter if she had questions, to which my daughter said "I think I understand what you're saying, if it's just a circle that means four, but if it's a circle with a line..." And before she could finish her thought Lella said "no that's not a line, it's a stem". At another point when Lella asked if she had any questions, my daughter slowly said "yes... what's velour?" And when Lella looked confused I had to step in and explain that Lella was saying "value", the amount of counts for a note. By the end of the half hour lesson, Lella had reached her explanation of middle C, which she described to my daughter saying "this is middle C because it's in the middle, there are two black keys, then on the left is C. Can you find another one?" When K didn't respond right away, she repeated herself, and again another time. So I said "she really has had no previous music experience, I think you need to even explain to her that those are called keys, like there are black keys, white keys..." And Lella just looked at me confused.
At the end of the lesson I agreed to buy the theory book so we can practice that at home, and Lella asked if I can sit in on the next lesson to help explain things to my daughter, because she "doesn't really focus". I agreed to sit in on the lesson, for my own benefit so I can help her with HW since I also don't have music experience. But I also mentioned to Lella that her accent is quite strong and I think my daughter was having trouble understanding her, and Lella seemed surprised by that comment.
I don't know... it says on Lella's profile that she has worked with young kids but I can't really see how the class was any different from how she would teach me, an adult with no prior music experience.
Oh! I forgot to mention something so basic - when we met Lella she thought I was someone else so I re-introduced myself and introduced my daughter. Then as we were saying goodbye at the end of class I realized Lella had never introduced herself to my daughter, so I asked "oh, what would you like K to call you, Ms. Li, or Lella? Ms. Lella?" She said Lella was fine so I turned to K and said "Tell Lella bye K." It just hit me, I mean that's something about creating a relationship with a young student. Speaking to them directly, making that connection. Lella was really smiley which gave the impression she was friendly but she never really made a connection with K who is the student, not me.

Lella quickly recognized what I needed to practice and brought me a great book that helped me get back to where I was very quickly.

Hi! First, I will ask for your experience not only with piano but with music. We will work on posture, playing technique and reading. Because of my tutelage, my default material for beginners is Suzuki Book 1 which you can either purchase yourself or I can bring one for you. If you have other music material that you would like to work on, I am happy to use that instead. Then I will assign you homework which you will need to practice on your own in preparation for then next lesson.

About Charlotte
Hi! I am currently a student at University of San Francisco studying Biology and Neuroscience. I began studying piano when I was 4 through the Suzuki method and started teaching when I moved to San Francisco to start school. I am dedicated to the Suzuki method and believe in it. When I take on a student, I want them to accomplish their goals but will require that they practice and prepare for each lesson. With practicing done, we can work on and hone your skill together and (I hope) develop a love for music and an instrument I hold very dear.

I love teaching piano. In my eight years of experience, I've learned several piano methods, and I've developed my own approach which balances playing, listening, and analyzing music. My students have told me they appreciate me for my clear, simple way of explaining things, my enthusiasm, and the personal attention I give to each student. My primary goal is to train well-rounded musicians, and offer the benefits that entails, such as discipline, critical-thinking, and creativity.

Hi,

I have been playing classical piano since I was three and a half years old, and have taught students of all ages and levels since I was fifteen. I was awarded the Associate of the Royal Conservatory diploma for Performers at age 17, the highest academic standing awarded by the Royal Conservatory of Music. I have studied music theory, including harmony, counterpoint, music history, and music analysis. I have also performed in benefit concerts, competed in a large number of contests, and collaborated with other musicians in a variety of ensembles.

I'm a very easygoing instructor and am very flexible about meeting my students' needs. I've studied under instructors with a wide variety of teaching skills, and can adapt my own teaching method to suit the preferences of my students. I absolutely love the piano and really enjoy sharing my passion with others. Please let me know if you have any questions!

About Audrey
I have been playing piano for 20 years, and am certified as an Associate of the Royal Conservatory (ARCT) professional performer by the Royal Conservatory of Music.

My classical piano training not only involved playing the piano, but also involved music theory, music history, music analysis, and ear training. I can provide a comprehensive instruction experience that is specifically designed for every student's level and goals.

I am a very easygoing and supportive instructor, and am very flexible about meeting my student's needs and preferences. I would love to mentor students who share my passion for classical piano music!

Want to learn to improvise on the piano? Compose your own amazing tunes?

Learning to create your own music will make you a better pianist and musician. It will expand your creativity in other fields, and will give you a great amount of joy. Plus, it will make your friends and family look at you with wonder.

I've been teaching people how to improvise for 10 years now and can help you do the same. This is, incidentally, a great way of getting beginners to really enjoy playing and develop some fundamental skills. Feel free to contact me to see if we're a match!

About Daniel
My passion is helping people learn new skills. Nothing gets me more excited than seeing someone improve in something that I know will enhance their life.

In terms of my personality and teaching style, I'm very relaxed and make learning really fun--that's part of what enables learning to be effective!

In terms of my experience, I've been an educator for the last 10 years. I have also worked in education at Google, Amazon, and other well-known companies and won several awards for my educational strategies (E3 scholar, South by Southwest Scholar, Design, Art, Technology Award, Hermes Creative Award, and more). In terms of education, it's a BA from Brown University, a Master's from Carnegie Mellon, and an MBA from Wharton.

So... let's get to the things I love teaching most!

PIANO
I've been playing piano for 25+ years. When I first
started learning, I really struggled to motivate myself to practice, so I understand many of the challenges that beginners face when they take up the instrument. It's not easy! However, I've learned some strategies that make practicing fun and effective. I love motivating individuals to accomplish things they could only dream of. My particular specialty is helping people learn how to improvise and compose their own music. By being able to improvise, you'll be able to not only WOW your friends and family, but also have a greater appreciation and understanding of all the music you hear. You'll naturally also get better at music theory, and--once you're good--you'll have a feeling of satisfaction that is incredible.

SPANISH
Quieres hablar Español? Having learned four languages and taught many in the past, I've crafted a particular style for teaching people languages that takes into account the way that humans learn languages naturally. We'll converse and read about all your interests so that you can really enjoy it. It's really fun and you'll get to speak very quickly!
