Classical piano is my strongest area as a performer and were the first lessons I took as a child. I have been playing for 20 years and would love to help you find your voice in the instrument.
Lessons will target technique, music theory, and musicianship skills. You will learn works by Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Chopin, Debussy, and other composers of your choosing.
*** NEW POLICIES ***
I'm currently only taking students that can commit to weekly lessons. I no longer allow 24-hr cancellations, which is a policy Takelessons promotes, but I don't find it useful for the teacher or the student. If you'll be out of town, I allow 4 cancellations per year. I also take off these dates: July 4, Thanksgiving/Black Friday, and December 24 - January 1. If you need to reschedule for another reason, I will try to find another time during that week for your lesson, but if it's an exceptionally busy week I may not be able to find a time-slot. You will still be obligated to pay for the lesson.
*** Bio ***
I have an MFA in Music Composition and Piano Performance from California Institute of the Arts and
Constantly composing, film scoring, and performing, I'm a very active musician that works with classical musicians, rock musicians, and everything in between. I teach a variety of instruments and will cater lessons to your styles and interests. I'm also a recording artist and work with music software such as Ableton Live, Native Instruments, and Sibelius. I would love to teach you how to compose and record your own music in whichever genre you prefer.
*** Lesson Details ***
Many of my students have studied music in the past, but weren't able to keep the passion. I pride myself as a very enthusiastic teacher that works hard at making lessons fun and interesting for any age and background. All of my students (from 3 years old to 60 years old) enjoy music and practice very hard. You will be provided with a solid foundation in theory, aural skills, technique, and creativity, giving you the ability to carve your own path in music. You will learn the correct way to play your instrument and develop the intuition to command it expressively.

I began my musical studies at the piano, and have over 20 years of playing under my belt. Our lessons will cover piano technique, theory, standard classical pieces and contemporary approaches to the piano as well.
My love for music began very young with piano lessons at age five. I continued lessons throughout high-school and college, but during that time I also found my love for singing and musical theater. Upon discovering opera I felt like I found my calling and have been studying and performing classical voice ever since. The combination of romance languages and the amazing athletic feat that is operatic singing captivated me from the very first moment I saw it and I’ve been hooked ever since.
I hold a Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance from San Jose State University, and since graduating I have performed with Opera San Jose, Symphony Silicon Valley, Celestial Opera Company & Independent Opera Company.

Maybe you’re a closet Pavarotti fan and have a yearning to hit those stratosphere-high notes, or maybe you just love to sing and want someone’s encouraging ear. That's pretty much the gist about me and my teaching, but if you'd like to know what your lesson might look like feel free to ask me! I usually respond within a day.

With the classical piano lessons, the beginners will work on music theory, note recognition, and counting rhythms. We will also work on beginner piano pieces.
Intermediate students will focus more on technique, fingering, advanced pieces using both hands, starting to memorize pieces.
History has always fascinated me. The way our world has developed and changed and continues to evolve is amazing. Everything can be tied back to the past, and I feel it's important to take a look back, put yourself in that time, and really study how things were to help understand why things are the way they are now.
Crocheting and knitting are a couple of good habits/hobbies I picked up about 10 years ago. I sell scarves online and I'm always working on some sort of project. I will have you knitting and pearling with the best of them!

Strong instrumental playing begins with a solid understanding of the fundamentals of music and the simple act of making a sound from the instrument. Students learn to play music by ear first, and are later introduced to music notation. More advanced lessons emphasize sight-reading, expression, and improvisation.
Thomas has studied piano for 15 years, and continues to play regularly. His education has included courses specifically on musical instruction methodologies, and he has been trained as a pianist at the collegiate level.

No one ever regrets learning an instrument… yet many grow old wishing they had taken music lessons! A talent they’ll be able to develop their entire life, your children will thank you for giving them the chance to learn music. And bonus points for you: after just a couple years, you’ll have free entertainment every Christmas!
Or maybe YOU’RE the one that wishes to learn! It is never too late to begin learning an instrument. Everybody has the ability, and if you’re determined and interested, there’s nothing stopping us from achieving this very special goal. (Interested in learning to compose? Scroll to the bottom to learn more.)
Everybody learns differently, and everybody likes different things. Whether it’s improvising or singing alon
1. Building a really strong foundation so it's easy to interpret or understand any part, and to play it with the right amount of practice.
2. Learning to sight-read music, so you can play it well as soon as possible.
3. Learning how to improvise (make-up) music, learn music by ear, and to understand and create chords, which lets you play music in different ways.
4. Play different styles from classical to jazz to popular music.
5. Learning how to practice efficiently so you can learn music as fast as possible.
6. Composing our own original music.
Practice makes perfect! Learning an instrument helps build self-confidence and discipline. If your child’s bored, distracted, or just needs a constructive hobby, music is a great place to get them interested in something that will help them feel better about themselves, and the effects will be felt across everything else they do, through better studying habits to a more patient, diligent work ethic.
It’s also relaxing! Stressed about work? Need an escape? Everybody has the power to learn an instrument. Seriously, there’s no such thing as “talent.” Just start lessons and get practicing! It really is that simple, and I’ll guide you through every step of the way.
I have a diverse background teaching students of all ages, from 3-year-olds to retirees alike, customizing what we learn to the individual student. We’ll learn how to read music just as easily as you read words; improvise and compose music of our own; and feel good playing any style: classical, jazz, rock, and all. My experience as a working musician in films, musical theater, and pop music, as well as classical concert music, allows me to appreciate and teach styles that many other instructors overlook, and I know full well that learning an instrument is not about becoming a professional; it’s about being able to connect to others or oneself through music… and also to just have fun! There’s no need to learn music we don’t like! It’s not about stuffing Beethoven into your kids’ ears… we just want to make music, be that Beethoven or Billy Joel.
Learning an instrument is one of those few skills that will genuinely last you your whole life. I don’t want to sugarcoat it: it takes time to learn an instrument. It takes practice, and sometimes it’s frustrating. But the results are well worth it.
Now get out there and make some music! But start by signing up for lessons. I can’t wait to get started!
“What’s that chord?” “Why does all my music sound the same?” “How do I fix this voicing?” “I just can’t get it out of my head!” …sound familiar? You’ve probably hit a rut. Or maybe you’re just starting out. Either way, you want your music to sound new, exciting, and to come out exactly how you hear it in your head. Yes… you CAN learn to compose music, you CAN learn to be more creative, and you CAN learn to share your sound with the world.
Film music, classical, jazz… whatever your interest, all music comes from the same place, and by learning a handful of basic concepts, you can apply these to whatever style you’re trying to write. Learning to emulate another musician involves knowing what they’re doing. Learning to create a groundbreaking sound requires that you know what’s already been done, and how to achieve it. Step by step, we’ll work our way there.
We’ll learn how to write cool, interesting chord progressions, how to write beautiful melodies, and how to voice chords. We’ll learn how to control the mood of our music, from making it sound relaxed to adding tension wherever we want. Maybe you’re trying to write for an orchestra, or just a small band. By learning the basics, you can then easily break away from what’s been done and come up with something truly new… the goal of any aspiring composer!

I teach all skill levels and all styles. Every lesson I teach is customized to that individual student and their musical interests. I do not believe in simply teaching people how to play songs; I believe in teaching people how the songs they love are constructed, and how they can incorporate the elements of a piece of music that they like into their personal musical style so they can apply them to everything they play in the future. I use music as a lens to teach the process of learning so that you can reach a point where you feel confident in creating your own exercises to further your development. My goal is to give you the tools to pursue music, as well as anything else, to the best of your ability without someone watching over your shoulder. That way you’re free to explore whatever it is you love the most!

In addition to topics specific to the piano, I also teach synth programming/digital music creation, patch creation, MIDI programming, recording techniques, vocal coaching, performance coaching, songwriting, and composition.
