I am pretty easy going. I want you to feel comfortable and at ease, but we do need to focus and can have fun doing it. :)
I utilize various methods for each instrument, which is determined by the students learning style and ability; needs, so this can change as time goes on (not sticking to one particular publishers materials). I have done (and continue to do) extensive research into materials available for each instrument I teach, and supplement with my own, to utilize the best out there for "YOU" for the best possible progress. While ensuring an extremely well-rounded musical education, so you can progress at the best possible rate. Since each student's potential is different, each will progress differently. This is also determined by your dedication to daily practice (the more you practice, the quicker you will progress & the more accomplished you will become). This is a 'Team Effort'; I give the guidance and tools. You practice, utilize learn these tools, and off we go! The sky is the limit!

Lessons are fun. My philosophy is that students should have music in their lives and benefit from the lessons they take now for years to come. Learning to play a musical instrument will help students with math skills, study habits, and develop a skill that will last for a lifetime.

After 3 months students will understand the fundamentals of their string instrument, know how to care for their instrument, warm up properly, be able to read and play introductory passages. After 6 months the student will have learned basic music theory, how to read music, and have advanced through playing multiple songs.

About Betsy
Music is the biggest passion in my life. I love being able to share that gift with my students, and look forward to their progress as much as my own. I continue to grow and develop as a musician, and love connecting with people through music. My students all learn to love and appreciate music, theory and performing as I share my knowledge and expertise.

I have degrees in Violin, Viola and Vocal Performance, that I earned while on full scholarship for music. I started violin as a young child with the Suzuki Method and later added viola. I began singing professional gigs while still in high school, and was the youngest member ever with the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra Chorus at 17. I also have extensive experience singing in non-classical groups and bands and am comfortable performing and teaching musical theater, pop, country,
opera, operetta, and church music. With solid vocal technique my students are able to cross genres with ease, and sing whatever inspires them musically.

I currently play viola with the La Jolla Symphony, and have sung with the San Diego Master Chorale and the San Diego Symphony. I was concertmaster in several symphony orchestras and have played as section leader for viola in numerous groups. I also play in and manage a string quartet and am also currently coaching small group string ensembles. My siblings and I have played in our family string quartet for over 20 years, and still perform together. Most recently I was chosen to record a new song Glow for Disneyland's California Adventure World of Color Winter Dreams.

I am comfortable teaching with various different methods, and cater lesson plans to the individual student. With over 14 years of teaching experience, I have taught students that vary in age from 3 to 75 years old, and am very comfortable with teaching children.

Vocal students are encouraged to pick songs from whatever genre sparks their interest. With violin and viola I use the suzuki method of training and follow the books and lessons, I use other books to supplement scales/technique.

Hello….the viola is a wonderful instrument and is tuned an octave higher than the cello. The viola's open-pitched strings are: from hi to low…A, D, G and C. No E string. The viola is played like the violin but with more natural arm weight as the strings are thicker. The viola also comes in fractional sizes: 12 inch up to 17 inch. A new viola student needs to be fitted for the correct size so the instrument is not so big and heavy that it will case frustration with playing and possibly an injury from being too big…this is especially true for children and adult women. We have viola's for rent, professional set up with good quality strings.

About Diane
I love to teach the violin, viola and fiddle. I really enjoy working with adult beginners to help them discover music. You are never too old to learn! I also enjoy working with young children and youth to establish a wonderful foundation for the student. I have special training in working with children from age 5 up to youth. I work with the student to incorporate, into the lessons, a strong sense of musicianship with both the violin, viola and fiddle. I am a structured teacher, one that is helpful, friendly and fun to work with. In working with young children, I encourage the parent to be involved with the lessons and they must be present at the lesson...to partnership, so that the child will progress and have an enjoyable experience. I use a modern approach in selecting books for each student.. books that inspire and encourage the s
tudent at his/her skill level and age. I discuss the various books with the parent and together we make a decision on the books used to help the child learn in his/her best way. Having taught several string instruments during the past 15 years...I understand the importance of passing on musical knowledge to brave adult beginners and to children and their parents who are starting out on a musical journey. . Music lessons can be a wonderful "corner stone" to help build confidence, creativity and explore new beginnings in learning a musical instrument. Music lessons also boost reading, math and critical thinking skills. Lesson are but a series of building blocks that bring joy and confidence to the young and old. Believe in music for life! Come take lessons and we will explore a musical journey together on the violin or fiddle.
In the past 10 years, I have taught violin and fiddle privately at my home studio and at various music camps, festivals, violin workshops and classrooms around the US. I continue to take private, classical violin lessons and go to music education seminars and workshops. In addition, for the past 20 years, I've attend music camps and week long workshops around the US. These camps, workshops and festivals focus on the various violin both for adults and children and for fiddle, traditions such as Old-Time (Southern) Appalachian, Scandinavian, Scottish and Bluegrass. Several of the workshops I go to yearly focus on classical violin playing and teaching for both adults and children. I play in a community string orchestra on a weekly basis for the past 8 years with a classical repertoire. I also continue to take private fiddle lesson with a classically trained violinist who is a professional fiddler. I'm continually learning so that I can pass information on to my students. Come "fiddle" with me and learn this exciting instrument.
I am now retired from nursing having spent 30 years in the nursing education field.
I would enjoy working with you or your child to help you or the child discover the joys of music making tailored to your goals on the violin or the fiddle. Besides teaching, I'm involved with my husbands business, Bobs Violins and Bows. We restore, setup, rent and make violins. We also repair and re-hair bows and sell new and vintage restored bows. Our shop helps students as well as professional players. If you decide on lessons, please get in touch with us BEFORE you rent or purchase an instrument for the student .For children we have smaller size instruments. My husband is a professional luthier and sets up all instruments so you will be learning and playing on a good student violin. We recommend renting an instrument instead of purchasing one to make sure the student wants to continue to play and learn. For children: Violins come in fractional sizes and the child needs to be measured correctly to ensure a proper size. If an instrument is too big, this can lead to discouragement with not being able to play. If you sign up for lessons with me, contact us first before you purchase an instrument so that we can measure the student for the proper size. Learning to play on an instrument that is professionally setup and of the correct size will help the new student progress and they will have an enjoyable experience. Playing on a violin that is too big for a child can lead to injury or frustration for the student and parent.

*** Lesson Details ***
My violin/fiddle lessons start out with the basics for beginners. For a beginning student, the basic approach to good technique for the instrument is essential in developing tension-free playing. To give you an idea of the basics: how the violin and bow are held, good posture, producing great tone with your instrument, learning basic music theory (major and minor scales, arpeggios and note values), sight-reading music, aural training (learning by ear), rhythm, learning how to tune the instrument and instrument care. I always teach the violin parts, some history of the instrument and how to care for your instrument and put it away after each practice. I also teach the student how to practice and we go over a hand written practice sheet at the end of each lesson so they have a lesson plan from which to work on at home. If the student is a child, I review this lesson plan with the parent and encourage them to be active with the student during the week of practice.
What are lessons like for a student? I use a simultaneous approach to violin technique, in that everything connects. I teach through the very basics of building skills using a variety of warm-ups, exercises, etudes and pieces (tunes) from violin or fiddle books that are age and skill level appropriate. Together the student and I use hands on learning; listening to tunes/pieces by my playing the tune for them and by using music CD's. I teach sight reading and playing music from notation with skill building work books to read music and basic theory. I have the student play along with me on simple exercises. This incorporates a sense of fun and meaning for the student. I also incorporate ear-training (aural skills) in teaching children and adults, this builds confidence and joy in listening which builds musicianship. . I use a call and response method to help establish skill building in all areas of playing from tone production to intonation (playing a note to correct pitch) to learning tunes and pieces and to establishing rhythms and beginning improvisation. Call and response is: teacher plays and student plays it back. This is a fun way to learn for adults and children. This is creative teaching and learning methods where progress is made by the fact there is no right or wrong way...just individual progress that builds confidence. I'm a flexible and caring teacher in helping develop musicianship skills. I'm a very firm believer in practice and teach the student (parents of children) how to practice effectively. A written practice sheet is sent home. Progress can be accomplished with only 15-30 minutes of focused practice a day. I believe that the teacher is an essential force in developing good practice habits with a student so they can grow individually and really enjoy both learn and making music.

*** Studio Equipment ***
I have a large, sun filled room in my home that is my studio. It is a smoke -free home. I have a music stand, good lighting, chairs, a tuner, metronome, a digital recorder, and several shoulder rests and chin rests to try out for individual comfort and play ability. In addition I have a music library of violin and fiddle books, CD's, videos and student articles of interest that I can share with my students. I also have properly set up violins of all sizes for rental for adults and children. Children need special sizes of violins to learn and play on so they will not become injured playing on an instrument that is too big for them. Buying instruments on Ebay or the net can be a disaster as they tend to not be setup correctly for playing and can also be of poor workmanship and materials. It's best to talk to a trained luthier or someone with knowledge before you buy an instrument. Beware of the VSO's....Violin shaped objects. Come fiddle with me. Stay tuned. Diane

*** Travel Equipment ***
I like my students to have a three ring notebook with folders inside and about 8 protective clear sheets so I can write down their assignment, notes and the handouts can be saved for reference. I give out lots of handouts and charts to help[ the student so they don't have to buy lots of different books. They in turn can write down questions for me for the next lesson. A good music stand at home is important so having a stand and a space for music is important for the progress of the student.

*** Specialties ***
I specialize in teaching children ages 5 and up. I also love teaching adults. I prefer to use several method (tutor) books depending on the student, their skill level and their age. I use several different music theory workbooks as well, again appropriate for adults, youth or a young child.
I teach classical violin technique for beginners for a solid foundation in violin playing and branch out into fiddle tunes and styles if the student is interested in learning fiddling. Having a good background in violin technique and basic music theory prepares the student for any genres they wish to learn. This also educates them to the proper mechanics of tension-free and pain free playing that is very important for a beginning student. and for success and progress.
Come learn violin with me and have fun while progressing.

Diane is a fabulous teacher!! When my daughter wanted to start violin and fiddle I knew I would need to know something about violin to help her at home. So, Diane taught my 5 year old and me. Diane really has an amazing bond with my daughter and has truly become one of our family... She makes the lessons fun and engaging for my daughter... She takes a personal interest in her students and gears the lessons to their level. Diane is always willing to work with you when it comes to schedules as well, for example: summer time vacations.... I highly recommend Diane as an instructor. She knows her instrument, her theory, and how to convey the information to adults and small children. We have now been taking lessons for a couple of years and my daughter still looks forward to them and that is due to the investment that Diane has personally made in their relationship!

Adrian is very friendly. Right now he is teaching my 7-yr-old the violin. It is a big commitment on my part (as the parent) to help oversee his practice times at home. I’m grateful for Adrian’s guidance on helping us achieve goals by showing him how to practice. I like how Adrian shows my son what to do and encourages him to think and speak about each piece. My son is still on the shy side right now, but I’m hoping he’ll warm up more. He enjoys being challenged, so I’m looking forward to this journey with him together.

Adrian is great. We've only had one lesson so far, but my 8-year old already wants to go back and he really enjoyed Adrian's welcoming and comforting approach. Adrian took time to understand why my son wanted to learn the violin, why he choose the violin and what his motivation was for learning such a unique instrument. We can't wait to go back and learn more!!

About Ray
Hello!

My name is Ray, I'm 30 years old, and was born in Queens, NY. I studied classical music for many years as a youngster at the Aaron Copeland School of Music college preparatory program. During this program I was introduced to Jazz, and around the same time began experimenting with synthesizers. I went on to study Electronic Production & Design at Berklee College of Music in Boston, and quickly became a very sought after studio musician and performer.

I've been successfully teaching many instruments and proficiency levels for 16+ years now, and can say with pride that teaching is my passion, and I anticipate it being a very important part of the rest of my life.

I enjoy reading nonfiction books on science, math, and philosophy, and am building a career as a pop music producer.

*** Lesson Details ***
My music lessons
are unique for three main reasons:

1. I have a very deep understanding of music, sound, and theory, and feel music to be one of my native languages.

2. I have devoted considerable amounts of time and energy studying neuroscience, which has greatly improved my understanding of the learning process.

3. I have been blessed with the tremendous amount of patience necessary to guide a student through the necessary steps it takes to learn at whatever pace is optimal, in order to maximize the efficiency of the learning process for each individual.

*** Equipment ***
Students must have their own instrument, and purchase their own materials (books, etc). From time to time I make my way to a local music shop, and am happy to purchase materials for reimbursement.

*** Specialties ***
Classical music is my background, and what I believe to be the most cognitively and emotionally fulfilling style of music to study and play. That said, I'm also a big fan of pop music (as well as other genres), and encourage students to enjoy learning their favorite songs from the radio.

My understanding of music theory is extremely thorough, and I'm happy to incorporate as much or as little of it as the student's interest dictates, nevertheless maintaining the minimal amount of theory necessary to get the most out of learning music and the instrument.

Thanks for checking out my profile! Please contact me with any additional questions you may have, as well as to inquire about day/time availability. I'll do my best to get back to you right away (usually within a few hours).

I enjoy encouraging beginning & intermediate viola students to develop a love of the instrument and solid technique!

I can also help an advanced student who's interested in fiddle repertoire.

About Laura
Laura has taught throughout her musical career and loves nothing better than to introduce students of all ages to the magic of creating their own music! As a teacher, she focuses on balancing inspiration and explanation. Inspiration: because if you don’t love your music, what’s the point? And technique: because if it’s easy to play and sounds good, you’ll keep coming back for more!

Laura has a BA in Violin Performance and a minor in American Roots Music from Berklee School of Music, has taught privately for nine years, and plays in several bands. Laura has taken firsts in her age division at several fiddle contests, including the California and Nevada Oldtime Fiddle State Champions, Western Open Championships and top 5 in the National Oldtime Fiddle Championships.

*** Studio Equipment ***
I provide sheet music for new tunes, stick
ers, and a basic fix-it kit for common instrument issues. I also try to keep backup books and a shoulder rest around at my studios so if someone forgets their equipment we can still make good use of the lesson.

I expect the student to provide their instrument, shoulder rest/end pin stopper, notebook, device for recording music, folder/binder for loose papers, and books. I don't require lots of books - just ones you'll use!

*** Travel Equipment ***
See Studio Equipment, above.

*** Specialties ***
I love teaching oldtime, bluegrass, country and celtic fiddle - most of what I do as a performer fits in along those lines. I teach Suzuki method violin as well. My Suzuki teacher learned directly from Shinichi Suzuki!

I encourage all my students to improvise, to try different musical styles, and to experiment with composition. My goals are to share my own love for music, and enable students to discover their unique musical voice.

Laura has been a great teacher for my 6 year-old daughter (starting taking lessons when she was 5). She is endlessly patient and has a perfect balance of fun and instruction in all her lessons. She helped us every step of the way--picking out the right rental instrument, finding extra workbooks that would be fun, coming up with ways to make practicing at home enticing. Laura is made to be a fiddle teacher--she has a obvious passion both for the music and sharing it with her students. My daughter left every lesson with Laura beaming with pride. Being a violin and viola teacher for the past 25 years, I love imparting to my students the how-to of tone production, and can teach from beginner all the way to conservatory auditions! If you need longer lessons just book them consequently. (For example: 30+30)

About Stephanie
I am a career musician, and conservatory trained violin, piano and vocal instructor with over 40 years teaching experience, and a resume spanning many pages. I also am a well endorsed composer and public speaker. Furthermore, I LOVE teaching! I am a competition judge, member of National Music Teachers Association, and Suzuki Association of the Americas. I have proven results, as documented on my students YouTube channel. With my instruction, you will learn quickly and most importantly, correctly, saving you time and resources as you reach your musical goals. Fact: One of the only activities that activates, stimulates, and uses the entire brain is music, so let's get started!

Some people have difficulty reaching a teachers' studio. For this reason, I have perfected my ability to teach via Skype or FaceTime. It is an advantage f
or my students to be instructed by a quality teacher. It's worth a try, isn't it?

Please note: I only accept weekly lesson students. Also, due to my performances, I'm not always able to this calendar up to date....so when you request a lesson time, allow me to communicate with you, if we need to adjust it a bit. It almost always works out if you don't mind doing that.

*** Lesson Details ***
All the students on my Student YouTube channel who have studied under three years, are practicing 2 hours a week, and you will have a similar result. That's 20 minutes a day, 6 days a week. Students under 5 practice about 5-10 minutes a day.

Please have an assignment book that lies flat, and keep it next to your music books as you practice between lessons. My instructions are very detailed to insure your best progress.

Studio Equipment
For on-line lessons, you will need a quiet place, and please test your sound and video prior to beginning of lesson. For students under 13 or so, do have a parent or caregiver taking notes while we work together.

Specialties
I have much experience with various learning styles, and in fact, am featured in a documentary made of one of my autistic students.

Stephanie is one of the best teachers you can possibly find through Takelessons. We are extremely fortunate to have found her. She is a successful professional musician who is very strict yet with a kind heart and skills/experiences to steer students through their learning limitations. I had trouble to make my older daughter to practice piano for years, and almost came to the point to have her given up learning. Stephanie changed everything. Now my older daughter is getting not only serious with piano but practicing harder then ever. I am so happy to see the results. Highly recommend her!!!

My 13 year old son has been taking viola lessons with him for 2 months and I can already hear an improvement in his playing as well as see a marked improvement in his bow hold and body alignment. My son had previously taken private lessons with another teacher for about a year, but Joshua is really helping him to focus on proper technique. Joshua is a very professional, affable and patient teacher.

I highly recommend Joshua for violin or viola study. Joshua maintains high standards for his students but is patient and professional at all times. His communication style is friendly and down to earth. I have learned a great deal from Joshua about how to approach violin exercises and, most importantly, the reasons behind the exercises!
