I've been teaching cello for 30 years and my students have gone on to play with different ensembles like symphony orchestras. Within the first few lessons, you'll be able to play simple songs by reading and by ear and as time goes on you'll be able to play more complex repertoire. I specialize in classical, style but I can teach you different kinds of styles, typically use Kummer method and Suzuki repertoire but I use a variety of method and books. I have the following tools available for your lessons: cello, computer program, sound system, Tuner and Metronome . I love working with students of all ages and experience levels and I can't wait to meet you!

About Maria
With more than 30 years of teaching experience for the cello, I have taught students of all ages, throughout California and overseas. I earned a Bachelor's degree and a Master's degree in Cello Performance and am currently the Principal cellist for the Camellia Symphony, California. In addition, I am teaching all levels of cello and beginner violin lessons to my students in Folsom, Napa and Sacramento.

My professional performing experience began in Medellin, Colombia in 1985 with the Medellin Philharmonic Orchestra where I was their Soloist beginning in 1992 and later on, as First Cello, from 1998-2002.

While in Colombia, I also performed with the Antioquia Symphonic Orchestra and the Antioquia Chamber Orchestra from 1991-1999.

I left my hometown of Medellin to come to the United States where I performed with the
Texas Christian University Orchestra in Fort Worth, Texas in 2000. Returning to Medellin, I spent the next year with the Eafit Symphonic Orchestra.

Finally, I settled in Sacramento in 2003, coming here to earn my Master's Degree in Cello Performance while performing throughout the next year with the California State University, Sacramento Symphony.

In Sacramento, I have also performed with the Sacramento Metropolitan Orchestra and with several other chamber groups.

At this time, I am teaching all levels of cello and beginner violin. My students range in age from six to seventy years and enjoy learning in a relaxing environment at their own pace.

I incorporate several different teaching styles to meet each students' individual needs and abilities.

*** Specialties ***
cello, violin
Suzuki for kids and traditional classical style.

Maria is an exceptional cello instructor. She is accomplished and highly skilled, though what sets her apart is her obvious love and enthusiasm for teaching. She is patient, discerning and observant, as well as friendly and approachable. She's been great in every way with our 10-year-old daughter.

As an adult beginner, Maria has been impeccable making me feel comfortable, encouraging me, challenging me, and teaching me. She is kind, professional, efficient, and very good at what she does. It is evident that she loves teaching as deeply and as truly as she loves the cello.

I took cello lessons from Maria for over five years. I found her to be very patient and encouraging. She has a passion for teaching and always made me feel uplifted after a lesson, eager to get back home to put into practice what she has taught. I am an adult student so perhaps a little more of a struggle than if I were much younger, but she never made me feel discouraged even on my worst days. She teaches from the heart and is an amazing cellist. I feel so fortunate to have been guided by her and will continue to play hopefully untill I can no longer hold the cello!

You can always recognize a skilled cellist. The music sounds smooth and graceful, the tone quality is lovely. Unskilled cellists just don’t sound the same. What’s the difference? Skill of course. The skill to play a very large instrument with relaxed hands and arms by using your core muscles to transfer your body weight through your arms and hands into the cello. Not every cello teacher knows how to teach that.

I believe that my unique combined musical and medical background makes me a better cello teacher. In addition to my graduate and undergraduate musical training and extensive musical experience, My knowledge of human anatomy and mechanics of how the body works can help you develop habits that will lead to the beautiful singing tone that’s makes the cello a favorite.

We will then build on those habits to develop good intonation, a lovely vibrato and a variety of bowing techniques that are the building blocks of great musical performances. I will help you develop

About JoAnn
Your lessons are designed to help you develop the skills and confidence you need to successfully perform in public. I work hard to prepare your lessons and I ask my students to invest daily time working on skills studied at their lessons. Performing music requires the patient integration of multiple skills over time, however, the rewards are BIG.

During your lessons you will receive instruction in skills needed to sing or play the cello as well as musical skills including rhythm, melody, harmony and style. Because there is a lot to learn, I encourage you to consider 45 or 60 minute lessons, which I offer at substantially reduced rates to make them more affordable for you.

I continually update my teaching methods by attending workshops and master classes and I incorporate my knowledge of human anatomy and function, to help you
perform with minimal strain. Also, I incorporate internet resources in your lessons to keep them interesting and up to date.

What will your lessons be like?
At your first lesson we will explore and name the parts of your instrument (voice or cello). We'll talk about what you would like to learn, set attainable goals and select songs that you will be successful learning.

In subsequent lessons you will warm up with scales and exercises, using common intervals with basic rhythms to improve your technical abilities and gain musical skills and knowledge, such as hearing pitches and intervals and keeping with the beat. This will also help you learn to read music.

Singers will learn to use breathing to coordinate with your vocal folds to make a beautiful tone and sing on pitch, relax your throat and tongue to create resonant chambers, shape your mouth and tongue to color the tone, and use your tongue and lips to form the words.

Cellists will learn to transfer your body weight into your cello to produce a mellow tone, placing your hands and arms on the cello and bow in a relaxed and balanced manner to allow you to play smoothly and in tune and to prepare you to produce a lovely vibrato. Since cellos don't have frets, you will also learn to locate each note on the cello but just a few notes at a time - until you know them all.

You will learn to use your technical skills and knowledge to create musical phrases that sound beautiful and authentic and are fun to perform and listen to. You will need to practice simple skills and phrases repeatedly until they become habit. I will lend you my kind and patient support to help you through the bumps in the road.

Not sure how to practice at home?
To support your practice at home you will: Receive a recording of each of your lessons to practice with; Learn simple exercises you can do at home; Learn to create and use simple backup tracks of your songs to learn to hear rhythm and harmony; Learn how to use your computer at home to get feedback for pitch, and tone quality.

Nervous about performing?
When you are comfortable I will provide opportunities to perform in student programs performing for friends and families.

You will have opportunities to participate and perform in workshops which include performance opportunities, lectures, demonstrations and Master Classes with nationally recognized teachers and performers.

I accompanied my teenage son to his first voice lesson with JoAnn and thought she was excellent. I particularly appreciated how she broke everything down to the most basic scientific level. She demonstrated clearly how the voice actually works and what is going on in the body that affects the voice. She taught that learning to control those things will improve the voice and quality of singing. I'm confident and excited that her tutelage will improve my son's singing. He enjoyed it and is looking forward to next week.

Private Teaching Experience I have been teaching for 5 years with students of all ages and levels of playing

Methods: I grew up learning the Suzuki Book Method and this is what I prefer to teach my current students which I find great for beginner cellists! Major/Minor Scales, Arpeggios, and Etudes are some of the essentials I cover in learning the cello

Musical Concepts: music theory, proper bow technique, proper left hand technique, phrasing, rhythm

Lesson Overview: Gener
ally, lessons consist of a warm up with scale-arpeggio and warm-up exercise. After a warm-up, my students' focus on a specific piece of repertoire that pin-points a certain technique . Once I think the student has progressed through and mastered a specific piece to their level, we move on to more challenging repertoire learning new technical concepts and ideas. Lessons are a great way to help you progress much faster at the cello!

Music is an important part of our lives, and thus I am not a one-style type teacher. I work with everyone at their current level and develop lessons for them based upon their desires. I believe that teaching the classics is just as important to teaching current music and inspiring each of my students to reach beyond their current comfort zone. I stress developing good practice habits and fundamentals, as these make any style of playing more enjoyable.

I have thoroughly enjoyed my experience with Johanna. She has been encouraging, thoughtful and very informative as I began this exciting introduction to the cello. As a mature student with some musical training, she adjusted the pace of my lessons to leverage what I knew and focused on strong fundamentals to help me gain confidence on the instrument. She has pushed me to achieve my learning goals in a very short time. I look forward to each lesson to learn as much as I can under her skillful, steady guidance and support.

At the start of my time with my students, depending on their skill level, I will take them through the physics of producing a clean and robust tone while also remaining relaxed and stress free. I focus on music theory as well as ear training to give my students a good musicianship foundation so that cello playing and all music endeavors are more accessible. I guide my students through a range of repertoire until I find what really clicks with the students particular desires and interests.

About Jeff
I am a classically trained cellist and a recent graduate from the Bob Cole Conservatory of music in Long Beach California. My teacher during this time was Dr David Garrett of the Los Angeles Philharmonic and Dr, Marlin Owen of the Biola Conservatory of Music. I have been playing cello for fifteen years and have been playing in orchestras for the past ten. I was the principle cellist for the Irvine Young Concert Artists Orchestra for two years and was Assistant Principle cellist In the CUSLB symphony orchestra.
In addition to classical music my time at the Bob Cole conservatory allowed to play in various Jazz ensembles and allotted me some proficiency at improve and composition. I primarily teach classical music but I would very enthused to delve into a more contemporary practice as per the request of the student.

I'm a young, versatile musician with a wide range of skills, and I love to share this experience with others by way of teaching. I've earned graduate degrees in both cello performance and music composition from prestigious schools, studying with some of the best educators the world has to offer. Whether you want a better understanding of music theory and history, to become a more competent cello player, or to learn to enjoy playing music for yourself, I will teach you in a manner that will make you a well-rounded musician and is personalized to your goals and the repertoire that interests you. All ages and levels welcome!

About Michael
I'm a young Canadian musician with a versatile range of skills and interests. My primary instrument is cello, but I'm also a composer with a strong background in music theory and music history. I'm an associate composer with the Canadian Music Centre and a member of SOCAN.

As a cellist, I've had the privilege to perform with some of the world's most celebrated musicians. I'm also a founding member of the former Mahewa String Quartet - with whom I won the grand prize in the chamber music category of the 2008 Canadian Music Competition - and I've performed as a soloist with the Meadows Symphony Orchestra and Calgary Youth Orchestra. I'm also a passionate advocate of new music, performing and premiering works with multiple new music ensembles in addition to initiatives as a soloist and chamber musician, often collaborating directly with
composers.

I studied at Southern Methodist University (B.M. ’13; M.M. ‘17), and Northwestern University (M.M. ’15) after receiving pre-collegiate training through the Mount Royal Conservatory in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. My studies have been funded in part by three generous grants from the Alberta Foundation of the Arts, in addition to the Alberta Arts Graduate Scholarship. My primary teachers include cellists John Kadz, Andrés Díaz, and Hans Jørgen Jensen, along with composers Xi Wang, Simon A. Sargon, Jay Alan Yim, Kevin Hanlon, and Lane Harder.

In addition to my more conventional interests, I also enjoy utilizing my musical skillset outside of the classical and concert music world. I'm a prolific arranger and improviser, and have collaborated in multiple capacities with choreographers, authors, playwrights, and filmmakers. This is all in addition to my main passion: teaching music. As a teacher, I aim not only to train skilled performers, but more importantly to foster deeper appreciation and passion for music at any age or level.

Outside of musical pursuits, I like cooking, painting, hockey, hiking, and spending as much time as possible in the Canadian Rockies (as well as enjoying the companionship of my wonderful dog and my awesome wife).
