A lifelong musician and songwriter, Ian S. has extensive experience teaching guitar and piano to students age 3 and up both as a private music instructor and as a staff music instructor at the Institute of Music for Children. With 28 years of experience on the guitar and 32 years on piano, Ian has studied and performed with several award-winning music artists, and has written, recorded, and produced over one hundred songs. He plays and teaches a variety of styles on both the guitar and the piano, from classical to jazz to rock. Ian is patient, friendly, and loves sharing the gift of music.

Ian was the guitarist in the Princeton University Jazz Ensemble for 3 seasons, was selected from a nationwide pool of musicians to perform at a special music event at the Kennedy Center in Washington DC, and was the recipient of the New Jersey Gove

I am very laid back and friendly, and I want you or your child to be as comfortable as possible during our lessons. You or your child will develop confidence and musical intelligence. I will make your lessons fun, enjoyable, and effective. Boredom is not an option! Music is fun... let's keep it that way.

The teaching methods I use will be custom-tailored to your individual needs, personality and specific musical goals. If it's guitar or piano you want to learn, I want to get you playing exactly what you want to be playing as soon as possible. That's what you're here for, and that's what I'm here for. I will make it happen. If it's songwriting that you want to learn, I will help you access that place inside of you that is dying to express itself creatively, and will teach you techniques to harness that energy and translate it successfully into musical expression.

You can expect to learn all the basics of music theory, proper playing techniques, improvisation and spontaneous musical expression, and I will help you develop your "ear" so you can figure out songs you like just by listening to them. This is all about you and your goals, and I want you to achieve them in a fun and engaging way.

Dr. Spaeth is currently working with Palen Music Center. He is also teaching at the University of Tulsa as an adjunct faculty member during Spring 2018. Spaeth maintains an online music studio through TakeLessons, where he teaches several instruments privately and in group settings including saxophone, guitar, oboe, music theory, flute, clarinet, and piano.

Dr. Carl Spaeth taught at Oklahoma State University as a Lecturer of Saxophone and Music Theory during Dr. Jeffrey Loeffert's sabbatical beginning August 2017. His duties included graduate saxophone lessons, graduate music theory review, graduate saxophone pedagogy, and saxophone studio class.

Prior to working at OSU, Spaeth was Instructor of Jazz and Saxophone at South Dakota State University from 2014-2017. His responsibilities included directing the annual SDSU/Brookings Optim
ist Jazz Festival, directing Jazz Ensembles I-II, Jazz Combo, Jazz Improvisation lessons, Jazz Pedagogy, online Jazz Appreciation, private saxophone lessons, saxophone quartets, private oboe lessons, and group guitar class.

Spaeth completed his Doctor of Musical Arts degree in saxophone performance at the University of Kansas in 2014, and his Master of Music Pedagogy and Performance from Oklahoma State University in 2011. He graduated from Harrah High School in 2002, earned his Bachelor of Music Education from Southwestern Oklahoma State University in 2008, and was a 5th-12th grade Head Band Director at Fairview Public schools. He is currently a member of the North American Saxophone Alliance, the Jazz Education Network, Music Teachers National Association, National Association of College Wind and Percussion Instructors, and an Honorary Member of Tau Beta Sigma. He has held previous memberships with Kappa Kappa Psi, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, Kappa Delta Pi, and the Oklahoma Bandmasters Association.

While at KU, Spaeth was also a graduate teaching assistant for the saxophone studio and jazz studies program. His responsibilities included Assistant Director of the KU Jazz Festival, directing Jazz Ensembles II-III, directing Jazz Combo III-VI, directing Saxophone Quartets II-III, teaching private saxophone lessons, assisting in saxophone studio class, and teaching the music education woodwind methods course. His Lecture Recital Document, A Performer’s Analysis of Selected Jazz Works for Saxophone Quartet, featured an interview with Bob Mintzer. Spaeth was a member of KU Jazz Ensemble I, KU Saxophone Quartet I, and KU's Helianthus New Music Ensemble. As a member of KU's Jazz Ensemble 1, Spaeth has performed with Dave Douglas, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Alex Sipiagin, Steve Owen, Gary Foster, Steve Houghton, Clint Ashlock, David von Kampen, Peter Epstein, Jeff Miley, James Miley, Roger Shew, and Brian Hamada, Brandon Draper, Rich Wheeler, Beau Bledsoe, Jeff Harshbarger, and Matt Otto. In July 2014, Spaeth went on a European tour with KU Jazz Ensemble I featuring Steve Leisring and Deborah Brown. Together, they performed at the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland, the Vienne Jazz Festival in France, and performed in several cities in Germany. Recordings by this band resulted in KU winning the DownBeat Student Award (Graduate College Large Jazz Ensemble Division) in 2015.

While at OSU, Spaeth was a GTA for the saxophone studio and music theory programs. His responsibilities included Music Theory I-IV tutoring and grading, sight-singing grading, piano labs, classical and jazz saxophone lessons, saxophone quartet coaching, saxophone studio Webmaster, and saxophone studio class. Spaeth was a member of the OSU Wind Ensemble and Jazz Ensemble 1. He had a regularly performing jazz trio and played in OSU's X2End saxophone quartet. The X2End quartet performed locally at the 2011 Navy Band Saxophone Symposium in Washington D.C., at the 2011 NASA Region IV Conference, and has won the state and division rounds of the 2010-2011 MTNA Chamber Music Competition. The X2End quartet went on to win the 3rd place prize at the national final round of the MTNA Chamber Music Competition. They also were the Division II Chamber Ensemble winners at the 2011 Hubbard Music Competition where they were awarded the 2nd place prize in the overall finals. Spaeth's final degree paper at OSU was a study of composer/performer collaboration. He traveled to Texas, Michigan, and Ohio to interview saxophonists and composers including David Dees, Peter Fischer, John Sampen, Marilyn Shrude, Joe Lulloff, and Charles Ruggiero. He has presented his lecture at the 2011 Navy Band Saxophone Symposium, the 2011 NASA Region IV Conference, and the 2012 OSU Single Reed Summit. As a member of OSU's Jazz Ensemble 1, he has performed with Bob Sheppard, Conrad Herwig, Wayne Bergeron, and Andy Martin.

While at SWOSU, Spaeth performed as a member of the marching band, wind ensemble, Jazz Ensemble A, saxophone quartet, and his own jazz combo named Five-Seven. As a member of SWOSU's Jazz Ensemble A, he has performed with Dan Haerle, Bob Bowman, Jack Mouse, Fred Forney, Janice Borla, Eddie Daniels, Pamela York, Lynn Seaton, Carl Allen, Dr. Michael Cox, Tom Williams, Dr. Robert Chambers, Dave Hanson, Drori Mondlak, Delores Williams, Byron Stripling, Frank Wess, Kenny Drew Jr., Dennis Mackrel, Bill Watrous, Rich Eames, Jennifer Leitham, and Randy Drake.

Spaeth's primary saxophone instructors have been Vince Gnojek, Dr. Jeffrey Loeffert, Dr. Ann Bradfield, Dr. Keith Talley, and William Rodney Hull. He has had additional instruction in lessons and masterclasses from Gary Foster, Dr. Joseph Murphy, Dr. Michael Cox, Bob Sheppard, Johnny Salinas, Dr. Kimberly Goddard Loeffert, Dr. Geoffrey Deibel, Dr. Jonathan Nichol, Dr. Griffin Campbell, Dr. James Laughlin, and Dr. David Dees. Spaeth's jazz directors have included Dan Gailey, Bob McCurdy, Dr. Jonathan Martin, Dr. Keith Talley, and Dr. Terry Segress.

​Spaeth enjoys recording several instruments in his home studio and composing new music. His compositions that have been performed include his big band arrangement of Cat Battles by Joshua Redman, September in the Refrain (alto saxophone and electronics), Funk-o-matic (jazz combo), Smooth (jazz combo), and The Deadline Arrives at Dawn (alto saxophone and electronics). As an advocate of new music involving the saxophone, he has participated in a commissioning consortium for Alone Together by composer David MacDonald through Kick Starter. In 2013, Spaeth performed the premier of Cuento #3 by Nelson Ramirez Diaz. During summer of 2014, he recorded selections from Dr. John Walker's "The Alto Saxophone in the Attic," published by Carl Fischer. At the 10th Annual SDSU/Brookings Optimist Jazz Festival in 2015, Spaeth directed SDSU Jazz Ensemble I's premier of Dog, Tired by David von Kampen.

​Dr. Spaeth is a Conn-Selmer Endorsing Artist. He hosted the North American Saxophone Alliance Region 3 (ND, SD, NE, MN, IA) Conference at South Dakota State University on March 17-18, 2017. On Saturday, April 8, 2017, Spaeth performed Dreams in the Dusk by David Biedenbender with South Dakota State University's Wind Symphony, directed by Dr. Jacob Wallace. On Monday, February 6, 2017, Spaeth performed the premiere of Lhotse for alto saxophone and percussion by Steve Danyew with Dr. Aaron Ragsdale. In April 2017, Spaeth performed solo tenor saxophone and orchestral clarinet in Ethan Bortnick's national PBS Special called "Generations of Music," which featured special guest, Peter Yarrow, from Peter, Paul and Mary.

I graduated from NYU, and earned a Master degree in Music Performance. I've been teaching Piano and Flute since I was in college. My students are ranging from 3 years old to 50 years old. And now, I am teaching at Cary School of Music, I have rich experiences to teach students. I always create different teaching and practicing strategies/methods for different students. I usually combine piano/ flute lessons with music theory, I teach music theory as well as piano and flute lessons while we're having lessons.

As a professional performer, I know how to train my students into a music professionals. However, my students will not feel much pressure to be a music professionals, because I want y students to learn it happily with a high music level standards.

I have a very complete formal classical music education background. I have been learning piano when I was 5, and I have been learning flute when I was 9. I was educated in music school during middle school, high school, undergraduate, and graduate school (New York University). I also took many classes, which are related to woodwind teaching in college. I've started my teaching career since 2011, I am good at providing different teaching methods for different students. I have 13 years of teaching experience. The lessons are molded to what you want to accomplish, and I will push you to make that happen. My own goals with each student is that they play with proper technique, understand music theory, read sheet music, are able to sight read, develop their ears, appreciate different genres of music, and most important of all, that they play from the heart. I specialize in classical music but I believe that this is the basis of all types of music and through this I can teach you any genre. I always tell my students that I can't do all the magic myself, they have to put forth the effort too. You get out of it what you put in it. I am a professional pianist, vocal coach and organist. I am originally from Puerto Rico, were I got my Bachelors in Music Performance with a specialization in piano from the Conservatory of Music in P.R. and have two Masters of Music from Eastern Michigan University, in Piano Perfomance, and The University of Michigan, in Collaborative Piano.

My philosophy has always been to ask the student what he/she wants to accomplish with their piano studies and then come up with a plan to accomplish this. Pair that with my teachings of proper technique and becoming a well rounded musician which includes: sheet music reading, music theory, sight reading, ear training and playing from the heart and you have the perfect formula for success. As a pianist I do a lot of freelance work with singers and instrumentalists. Working with them for their concerts/recitals, competitions and recordings. I work also with middle/high school students as the choir accompanist for the Bowling Green City Schools in Ohio. I perform my organist duties at Olivet Lutheran Church in Sylvania, OH.

I'm a 50+ adult who took years of lessons as a kid and am now returning to piano. Xavier is patient, pleasant, selects appropriate music, works on both technique as well as musicality, and is great fun.

Mr Suarez has been teaching my 9 year old for just over 2 months. My son was excited about piano before we started, but now he loves it even more. He practices every single day without being told. Mr Suarez is patient, kind and teaches supportively with humor. He pushes just enough to make my son want to be better, without making him feel bad about his performance, should he be struggling. I highly recommend Mr. Suarez.

I have been teaching piano for over 30 years. For beginning student's, I use the "Alfred's Basic Piano Series". This will teach them playing the piano immediately. I will be teaching music theory, notation, technique, and different chords progressions. This will be introduce as my student's progress in their studies. For Intermediate and advance student's they usually want to focus on a certain type of music. For example, they might want to learn jazz techniques, classical, country, or latin jazz techniques. I will always tailor and cater to my student's ability to progress, not forgetting to use a little bit of humor so that they will have a rewarding career in music.

I would always tailor lessons to their level of skill. Nothing is more rewarding than to see one of my students at a recital and i hear their parents tell their friends,"that's my son, he learned from the best". I personally believe "teaching music" can not be taught in a classroom. One must have a love of teaching and a love of teaching that particular instrument to my students. For my beginning students, i use the the "Alfred's basic music series". For my intermediate to advance students, i start at their level of piano playing. Rees was AMAZING with my boys, at the time they were 8 and 10. They are very different in the way they learn and he was able to adapt to teach them each in an individual way that they loved. I only wish he still lived in town.

Rees inspired a love of music in my daughter that has lasted for the past 7 years when she first started with him. He has an attention to detail and music composition which he's able to incorporate into a fun learning environment. He's since moved from our area but his impression has lived on in my daughters love of music. Consider yourself incredibly fortunate if you have the opportunity to bring him into your child's musical instruction. We've yet to be able to recreate the Rees experience but our fortunate that the base he provided has carried us even now that he has moved on.

I have been teaching music for 28 years and have a tremendous amount of passion and enthusiasm. I am a classically trained flutist and pianist as well as music history and theory enthusiast. I teach students with different methods, depends on their preference.
For beginners, I focus more on fundamental technique, such as the hand position, and relaxation....etc

Dr. Shih-Ting is an accomplished pianist, performer, educator, and musical artist who is originally from Taiwan. She possesses an extensive education in the realm of music, recently earning her Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Piano Performance from University of Texas at Austin in the Spring of 2018 under Professor Gregory Allen’s studio. She also obtained her Master of Music and Bachelor of Music, both in Piano Performance, from The Boston Conservatory and National Taiwan University of Arts (NTUA) in 2015 and 2012 respectively, where she studied with Dr. Jonathan Bass and Dr. Chi-Yin Lin.
Moreover, Dr. Shih-Ting is a seasoned performer and a veteran of the concert stage. She has performed as a soloist but has also collaborated with various instrumentalists in a variety of different settings. She attended the Mozarteum Internationale So
mmerakademie in Salzburg in 2013 and 2014, where she studied in Professor Ya-Fei Chuang’s studio. Also in 2014, she attended the Duxbury Music Festival and studied Chamber Music with Mr. Jeffrey Cohen and Mr. Amir Elden, as well as Solo Piano with Dr. Jonathan Bass. Dr. Shih-Ting has held over ten piano solo recitals and performed in a multitude cities, including but not limited to Kaohsiung, Taipei, Austin, Boston, New York, and Salzburg. From 2016 onward, she began focusing on collaborating with an array of instruments and groups. She also began studying with Dr. Colette Valentine and Dr. Anton Nel. As of lately, she has performed at multiple concerts, including a duet with cello in May of 2018, a duet with bassoon in October and November of 2017, and a trio in April of 2017. Furthermore, she is an energetic, inspirational accompanist, and has been meticulously working in Dr. James Morrow’s studio at University of Texas at Austin, performing for lessons, seminars, university choirs, and Bach cantata projects.
Presently, Dr. Shih-Ting provides instruction in her personal studio and educates students utilizing her own unique strategies and methods she has refined throughout the course of her musical career. Ultimately, she strives to continue performing, teaching, and enriching people’s lives through her heartfelt music.

Teaching Philosophy ----- Giving students to achieve their dreams
Dr. Ada Shih-Ting teaches piano lessons, viola lessons, music theory in levels of beginner, intermediate and advanced, from age 4 and up.
I have a deep passion for teaching, especially when I see student's development with their musicality and creative ideas. As a teacher, teaching students is a reward to me. I divide my teaching strategy into different levels.
For beginners, the fundamental studies have always played an extremely significant role in their future learnings. I focus on the specific aspects, such as the hand posture, relaxation, or rhythm. From their first few lessons, I start to build their good habits on piano practice. Also, during lessons, I divide time into sections, 2/3 on pieces, 1/3 on studies (like scales or some exercises) and theory. Generally, I ask beginning students to practice as lesson length daily.
In intermediate, (the level from sonatines or above) I ask students to define their interests on specific genres and composers. But I also open and assign them to a variety of repertoires. It helps them to build the enjoyment of piano playing. For motivations, I train students for piano contests based on their willingness. Generally, I also ask intermediate to practice as lesson length daily.
For advanced students, the lessons concentrate on building their professionality and musicality. I focus not only on musical techniques but also on artistic expressions. I describe piece as a story, which creates imaginations and helps on creating their musical ideas. But I even analysis piece logically, it helps them to memorize.
Moreover, I use different learning modalities by aural, visual, or kinesthetic learners, always demonstrate in lessons.

A great teacher with patience and passion. Technically, she offers couple ways for students to practice a complicated phrase in the lessons. she lets me know how to present the music emotionally but logically. I made a great deal of progress after working with her!
