I am a Florida native, active doctoral student, teacher and practitioner. My career includes performing and recording as a guitarist and teaching subjects such as music or math. Grade-school academic strengths in mathematics represent my enthusiasm for the subject. The math equivalent in music can be considered music theory, which is another passion of mine. I hope to take these well-rounded characteristics to teach and influence others with what I have learned in my education and career thus far.

Education & Teaching Experience:

I am currently pursuing my Doctorate of Musical Arts from Shenandoah University and hold a Masters of Music from the University of Akron and a Bachelor of Music from Stetson University (all degrees with a guitar performance emphasis). I also have a temporary teaching certificate for Music K-12 fro
m the Florida Department of Education. I have taught in Florida as a preferred substitute for general music classes, K-12. In college, I have given study sessions for music theory levels ranging from 4-part writing to post-serialism.

I am interested in teaching you what you need and want to learn so that you achieve your dreams. Please note that I only take serious students who will practice at least 30 minutes every day or 35 a day 6 days a week at home. I would like you to keep a log of how much you practice. This will enable you to make progress through the curriculum as you will be a beginner for the first 3.3 years, an intermediate for the next 3.3 years, and then an advanced student for 3.3 years. I will give you assignments to do over the week, and the next week we will go over them, learn something new and get new assignments. It takes 10,000 hours of practice to become an expert!

About Tammye
I am a 2008 graduate of the University of North Texas with a Bachelor of Arts in Music degree. While at North Texas I taught trumpet lessons in the Denton area. I have also taught piano, clarinet, and saxophone as well as all the other brass instruments. I have performed with the UNT Concert Band, the UNT Brass Band, the UNT Nine O'Clock Lab Band, the Collin County Jazz Band, and the San Jose Metropolitan Band.

Currently, I teach clarinet, saxophone, trumpet and piano in the DFW area. I also play trumpet in the both the Frisco Community Band and the Frisco Community Brass Ensemble.

All students are required to purchase the Musician's Practice Planner, which you can find at any music store. You will also need to g
et any books that we play through (but I'll give you time to get them, so don't worry.) Any books that we use will be easy to find and won't cost a whole lot of money.

I will always bring my instrument with me when I attend a lesson, so I expect my students to do the same when they come to my studio. Also, make sure you have any books and music that we will be playing out of. I always have a copy of anything that we are playing, so I expect the student to have a copy as well.

I've studied with some of the finest trombonists in the US and completed my Bachelors degree in Trombone Performance at the University of Arizona. My performing background is a balanced mix of classical and commercial ensembles. I've played in symphony orchestras, pit orchestras, show bands, jazz bands, chamber music, and dixieland to name just a few. It all starts with learning the basics and that's how I approach brass playing (which includes trumpet, french horn, trombone, bass trombone, baritone/euphonium, and tuba) with my students. I am starting over from scratch with trumpet. Tom is helping me to rebuild and strengthen that foundation, develop good habits and skills with meaningful exercises and great learning materials. In just a few lesson I feel I have made great progress while enjoying myself immensely. Tom's lessons are a delightful experience; I alway leave them feeling very energized and refreshed. My favorite part of our lesson is when we play duets together. Tom plays his Euphonium, I love the sound of that instrument, while I play trumpet; these duets sound just heavenly. I do not have enough good things to say about this instructor, other than I am simply delighted with the experience. Thank you Tom. -s.

The student is my ultimate focus during the lesson time. Sometimes my students arrive and have a total different idea of concepts or literature in which they wish to make progress different from what I had planned. We are always able to accommodate these shifts in plans while reaching our lesson goals.
I enjoy working with students in the middle school ages. I find that this is when they make the greatest growth. There is nothing better that seeing a child's face as the bulbs go off concerning musical concepts. I believe that together we can reach great heights in your musical development. Dr. Mealey was the man who taught me my very first lesson on the tuba oh so many years ago. I have since had the privilege of performing professionally in over 40 states and 30 countries around the world as a soloist and as a member of Boston Brass. The years of private lessons I took with Dr. Mealey gave me the perfect musical foundation to eventually pursue my dreams.

I still remember how much he cared for every single kid in each of his bands. There are people who are put on this earth to teach and he is one of those. I can't imagine how my life would have turned out if it weren't for Dr. Mealey.

I can't recommend studying with him any more highly.

I had the pleasure of working with Dr. Mealey for fourteen years, first as a colleague and then as his supervisor. Bob is a very skilled musician and teacher. He has had many years of experience bringing his students' performance levels to new heights. He works hard and expects the same from his students. This winning combination has helped to create some very skilled musicians, with many of them going on to enjoy playing in ensembles for many years.

It was always a pleasure to watch Dr. Mealey and his students perform in concert. The looks of joy were always evident with everyone in the house - members of the ensemble, its director, and the audience.

Leandro was energetic and approachable right from the start. My five year old was so excited and we originally thought he might not have the attention span for more than 1/2 hr. But my little boy was mesmerized by Leandro. Such great energy! He made it easy enough for my 5 year old to comprehend and even wrote down easy step by step instructions for practicing at home! I look forward to watching my son blossom under his instruction!

My experience with Leandro was incredible. I managed to improve a lot my technique and the quality of my sound during the time I was studying with him.
He is a great teacher, always manages to make the lessons exiting, using many different methods from classic to jazz and even practising improvisation.
He is very good in detecting your flaws and adapts the lessons focusing on what you need or whish to improve.

Horn players can expect to have a unique sound, and I intend to let the student harness that rather than stick to whatever standard of sound is preferred in our community. From my experience, horn players tend to build tension in the jaw, and as a person with TMJ (Temporomandibular joint dysfunction), I know how to recognize these pains and how to release tension and prevent it!

I have been studying classical horn playing for 7 years and have had experiences in various orchestras such as the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra and the Ocala Symphony Orchestra. I am also a part of the National Orchestral Institute + Festival of the University of Maryland, College Park in 2018, a n
ationally-acclaimed summer festival. In addition, I studied the Natural Horn for 2 years, the predecessor to the modern French Horn. Despite having a classical background, I frequently have to play jazz when playing modern compositions and learned how to read lead sheets, so therefore I can bring a multi-faceted way of teaching every day.

I have experience teaching young kids in Baltimore through the OrchKids Summer Program. I was a Brass Intern and taught the horn players and at times the trumpet players. From this experience, I developed patience and an even stronger love for teaching to play the instrument to which I am dedicating my life. I haven't taken lessons from Xin, but as a colleague of hers at the Eastman School of Music, I can honestly say that she is one of the best and most dedicated horn players I've ever met. I have no doubt that Xin's skills as a musician would transfer well to her teaching. You won't go wrong with her.
