Great start in technique and scales and learning how to read music!

About John
I am a 36 year old professional musician, and music and tennis Instructor. I teach Trumpet, French Horn, singing and tennis. I have 25 years experience playing trumpet, French Horn and Singing and play in several groups around the San Diego area including:
The New City Sinfonia (Chamber Orchestra)
The Amalgamated, (a Ska/Reggae Band)
Full Strength Funk Band
Heartland Brass Ensemble
Trumpets R Us
Filarmonica Portuguesa Uniao De San Diego
Tierrasanta Lutheran Church,
Elk Tones Big Band
Dim The Lights Disco Tribute Band

I am very passionate about music, from learning to teaching, practicing, performing and recording. Every day my goal is to promote music, learn, practice and help people enjoy music either by listening or performing.

*** Lesson Details ***
Lessons will start with good solid warm-up exercises focusing on
breathing and proper technique for Brass playing.
The 2nd part of lessons will be technique, Scales and method books for trumpet and french horn.
The last part of lessons will be working on Solo repertoire and learning songs for performance, sight reading, playing duets and learning jazz improvisation if interested. Lessons will include sight reading, play along/sing along CD's Scales and technique as well as theory.

For my Trumpet Students I use Herbert L. Clarke Technical Studies Book to help improve aerobic endurance, technical and finger velocity as well as production of good tone quality. I will also use the Earl Irons Group of 27 exercises as well as the Max Schlossberg Method to help improve air flow, breathing control and fluidity of sound throughout all registers. I also use the J. B. Arban's Conservatory method for other techniques including scales, double and triple tonguing, intervals as well as duets and solo repertoire.
For jazz minded students I will start with basic fundamentals of improvisation including melodic improv, Blues forms and blues scales as well as reading through chord changes and playing in several modes and other scales used in jazz.

I also provide tailored instruction on Bugling, and the proper playing of military bugle calls for those students interested as well as those involved with Boy Scouts who wish to earn their Bugle Merit Badge.

For my French Horn Students I will use the same technique books as Trumpet but learning traditional French Horn Solo repertoire, as well as Brass quintet/choir repertoire and orchestral and concert repertoire. Focus for French Horn students will be mainly on control of partials and tuning techniques.

For my Voice students I will start with good breathing technique and warm up exercises designed to get the vocal chords warmed up and get all the other muscles relaxed in order to produce great tone quality. Focus will be on intonation, and learning to use the air and support to extend the vocalists range higher and lower as well as gain power and confidence in singing.
Each Vocal student will have a piece to practice or will bring a piece of their choosing in that they would like to learn and this will be used to apply the techniques learned at the beginning of lessons. Styles of singing that I sing and can teach are Classical, Jazz, Big Band and Standards, Oldies, Pop, Country, Soul, Rock, R&B, Christian Rock and Church Music and also harmonizing like in a duet style or choir/vocal ensemble setting. I will also teach performance techniques, showmanship, stage presence and the overall performance package every singer needs to have confidence while singing.

I am a classically trained musician on Trumpet, French Horn and Voice and reading music, articulations, dynamics and learning musical forms is an essential part to any performers success. I also have studied various jazz styles and improvisational techniques as well. I want to teach students the basics of good musicianship and help them to excel in learning, practicing and performing in their own selected styles of music, whether its classical music, or jazz/rock/pop/country and any other styles students are interested in.

For Academic students who need tutoring I have a very extensive background in history, specifically focusing on US History, Military History, and the study of different eras including major war eras. Academic tutoring can be geared towards the understanding, comprehension and critical thinking understanding of the subject matter, as well as research, essay writing, as well as public speaking and project presentation.

For Tennis Students, I focus on the basics from footwork, to basic swing mechanics as well as strategy. Tennis lessons can be geared to develop specific areas of the game of tennis, or an overall game improvement whether for those who want to be competitive, or just enjoy a friendly game. I am also willing to do group lessons of up to 4-5 players to enhance a group learning environment as well as combining the skills from each player to enhance the other and create a fun learning environment on the tennis court.
*** Studio Equipment ***

My main teaching location is my private studio in Spring Valley and at the Ramona Music Center in downtown Ramona for students in the area. I have all items needed including music stands, CD player for play along programs as well as an upright piano.

*** Travel Equipment ***
When traveling I can bring my own personal music stand and electric keyboard with stand as well. Technique and song repertoire and theory books I can provide when needed.
For tennis instruction I have my own rackets as well as a ball hopper full of practice balls to bring to any location or public open tennis court. I also have reels of string and a stringing machine to restring tennis rackets with broken strings.

*** Specialties ***
Classical, Jazz, Reggae, Ska, Pop, Rock, Hard Rock, Funk, Soul, R&B, Blues, Church/Worship.

Tennis: Ground strokes, both 1 hand and two handed back hand. Serve, kick serve, slice serve, tomahawk serve, net play including volleys, over heads as well as other specialty shots including forehand and backhand slice and approach shots, Lobs, topspin lobs, and drop shots. I had an instructor prior to him for nearly a year. I hired JR because after that time I didn’t even learn how to read music. I learned more today from JR than the entire time I had my previous instructor. JR is detailed and patient for an old, inexperienced fart like me. Thank you, JR!

About Nathan
I have been teaching piano and guitar for seven years now. I am a graduate from Temple University with my Bachelors of Music, specializing in music theory and Classical piano. I have been playing piano for nearly 20 years, and guitar for 15 years. I have a strong Classical background, especially in piano, but I also have an extensive rock background.

When I take on a new student, I find out as much about their personal musical interests as I can. Though I typically use lesson book-based teaching for beginning students, I also use any other materials the student is interested in once they have some experience with their instrument. This includes Classical repertoire, or any pop or rock songs they would like to learn.

I have played with various gigging bands around Philadelphia and Central PA on guitar, keyboards, vocals, and d
rums. These bands include progressive rockers Igor's Egg, synth rock band Coup Couroux, and cover band Bombay Zoo.

*** Lesson Details ***
I offer a performance and theory-based approach to learning piano and guitar. I find that teaching theory from the beginning gives the student a much more thorough understanding of their instrument and music in general. I am a rather laid-back teacher--I will not shout when the student makes mistakes (one of my childhood teachers actually did this!). I try to instill as much interest as I can in my students. However, the level of commitment and time they put into learning their instrument is up to them.

For piano I typically use the Bastien series of lesson books. For guitar, usually Hal Leonard or sometimes the Alfred series. Once I have talked to a new student, I take my time shopping for a book that suits that students needs and interests.

After several months of lessons with me, and sufficient practice time on their own, the student will know the mechanics of their instrument. For guitar, they will know which notes are played on each string and several chords. They will also know the correct way to hold the guitar, the pick, and correct hand and finger position for playing the fret board. For piano, they will know where to find each key (A through G) on any part of the piano. They will also know the correct way to sit at the piano and the correct hand and finger position while playing the piano. For both instruments, the student will know how to read music on the staff, will have a basic understanding of rhythm, and will understand basic musical concepts such as chords, scales, sharps and flats, and intervals.

To summarize, after approximately three months of teaching, the student will know the basics of their instrument, and will be able to make an informed decision as to what kind of musician he or she would like to become.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I provide no equipment unless asked specifically. The most I have ever needed to bring to a student's home would be a music stand or guitar picks.

I expect my student to provide an instrument (piano or guitar), and if playing electric guitar, an amplifier. A music stand is an essential piece of equipment also. If playing guitar, the student should have his or her own set of spare strings and guitar picks.

A note on keyboards-
A real piano is best for learning, and there really is no ideal substitution. If a student is playing on an electric keyboard, he or she will not attain the technique needed to be a serious pianist, nor will they acquire a sense of touch and key sensitivity. However, a keyboard will suffice for learning beginning concepts!

*** Specialties ***
I use a technique and theory inclusive approach. I typically use a lesson and a theory book. I find that teaching theory strengthens the student's overall understanding and appreciation of music. I do, of course, weight the student's interest when deciding whether or not to use theory at all.

rom Disney. Students have the options of borrowing my used books or purchasing new books.

My new students love the patience and personalization that I bring to each lesson. I combine theory, technique, practice, rhythm (counting), vocabulary, and performance pieces. Demonstrating each piece, we often have fun singing along and adding games or flashcards to aid in understanding.

Students are expected to practice a minimum of an hour a week at home and schedule reoccurring lessons on this site. They have the chance to earn a stamp on their Piano Passport for completing each piece at 80 percent or better. Further, student receive awards for practice each week. These awards include a variety of stickers and breaks for Piano Tiles on my iPad.

I teach inside my home studio or at your home location, considering you have a piano or keyboard.

Visual Arts:

For four years I taught drawing, painting, sculpture and mixed media to students from grades 5-12 at the San Diego School of Creative and Performing Arts, Torrey Pines High School, and Endeavour Academy. My lessons focused on individual creativity and learning about historical and cultural art techniques from around the world. Through the Language of Art, I taught the Elements (line, shape, form, value, space, color, and texture) as well as the Principles (balance, contrast, proportion, variety, unity, and gradation) in each art project. I encouraged every student to analyze their own artwork and the artwork of others through discussions and presentations. Today, I offer private art lessons to individuals of any age who would like to explore their creative side in their media of choice.

I teach inside my home studio or at your home location. Basic materials like paper and pencils are included. Students are expected to buy or pay for canvases, brushes, paints, etc.

Yoga:
When I first tried yoga, my fingertips were 6-8 inches from touching the ground. I learned that yoga is not for the flexible, but it is here to help us become more flexible, strong, and balanced as well as develop inner peace. Over the past 7 years, yoga has woven intricately into my life as I study and write about yoga philosophy.

In March 2015, I received my 200-Hour Yoga Teacher Certificate from Yoga One San Diego. I currently teach with yoga one and donation classes at Mission Bay Park. I’ve attended and taught at International Yoga Conventions and have led 3 local yoga wellness retreats and one international yoga pilgrimage in the summer of 2018. I emphasize the benefits of breathing with your movement, chakra energy, and alignment, and safety in getting into and out of poses. Hannah aspires to share her light and enthusiasm to anyone who is open.

I can teach yoga inside your home, yard, or in Balboa Park.

Combination Lessons
I also offer combination lessons. If you are interested in one hour of yoga and drawing or painting and piano, I’m happy to accommodate.

It is with great pleasure I recommended Yelena if you are looking for piano teacher. Yelena has been my teacher for much of 2009, after i made the drcision to pursue piano lessons as an adult. AlthoughI had taken piano lessons for a couple years as a child, my knowledge of the keyboard and understanding were of music were limited. I have worked with other piano teachers since reaching childhood, but the expeirience was not inspiring
or motivational.
That all changed when i started working with Yelena.
Her passion for sharing her love of music with her studentshas been great source of joy for me. With her guidance, I am playing at a much advanced level
Then ever before, and with a deeper appriciation of what i am doing. She combines the rigth amount of theory and scale work, with learning classisl pieces.
Yelena has the patience and warms of a great teacher, and believe she would be equally good working with children as she is with adults. Her contribution to promote the love of playing music in her students is a true gift to us all.
