About Alexander
My name is Alex, and my passion is teaching music. I offer clients a unique learning experience with customized lesson plans and personalized attention to fit your exact goals and needs. These aren’t just words to me…they are a commitment I make to everyone that I have the pleasure of working with.

Here’s who I am…

I earned a Bachelor's of Music from Berklee College of Music where I studied Bass Performance and Composition. I have years of experience playing upright and electric bass in many styles such as rock, jazz, orchestral, and big band. I’ve studied a variety of instruments over the last 20 years including guitar, bass, drums, ukulele, and piano.

Here’s what I can do for you…

I will give you my full attention and unyielding patience with each and every lesson. Together we will explore the principals of music that
will enable you to learn to play in any style you choose to study. Ultimately my job is not to teach you to play, but to show you how to teach yourself. I will arm you with a thorough understanding of technique and theory.

I love working with kids and adults. I love brand new players with no experience as well as seasoned players who just want to fill in some gaps in their knowledge. Whatever your age, and wherever you’re at with your playing, I hope you will give me the chance to help you have more fun and confidence in music.

Every player I work with gets access to a personal online Lesson Journal where you can see my notes from our lessons, do homework from your “Stuff to work on” lists, and access my entire digital library! Every lesson is designed just for you.

Let’s get started…

You can take lessons at my studio, in your home, or online via Skype.

For lessons in my studio, I can provide instruments and amplifiers for both of us.

There is ample seating for parents to sit in on lessons. Parking is available in the driveway.

You’re going to love your lessons!
-Alex

I aim to instill a love of music and of the instrument through both student guided song selections from popular genres and movie/video game soundtracks, as well as the pedagogy and technical exercises that are required to play the double bass. I complement this with various etudes and repertoire from both the classical and jazz idioms to create a bassist that not only knows how to groove, but has a solid command of the bass.

About Nicholas
Detroit native, Nicholas C. K., demonstrated an innate musical talent from a young age. His command of piano, guitar, trumpet and bass progressed to studies at both Columbia University in Chicago and Wayne State University in Detroit. Since age 16 Nic has toured the country sharing the stage with acclaimed rock acts such as; Tesla, Bret Michaels, 3 Doors Down and many others. He is currently endorsed by Warwick Basses.

Nicholas been a musician in some form or another for as long as he can remember. His musical journey started when he was only six, with a delve into the realm of classical piano. While there he studied under world class child prodigy Josh Cullen. The composers that he studied include Bach, Beethoven, Barton, Hayden and many others.

From here he progressed to playing jazz trumpet, studying the Jamey Aebersold method un
der Paul Finkbeiner, the lead trumpet player for the Paul Keller Ensemble.

Then at the age of 11, with the help of his grandfather he discovered the guitar. He learned quickly on his old SR guitar. He quickly discovered that he had a natural taste for blues phrasing, and his soloing abilities quickly blossomed. 2 years later, he had formed his first band, Spherical. It was through this band that he found the bass.

His journey into the realm of bass, began out of necessity and progressed into love of the bottom end. Since then, he has been collecting basses, playing, living and breathing bass. He now realizes the importance of a funky beat, a subtle line and most important of all A Tight Groove!!!

The benefit of studying under someone with a vast array of both talent and experience is clear.

*** Lesson Details ***
During his musical career Nicholas has played almost every style of music; from folk to experimental from jazz to rock. One thread holds true through all music, it has to groove.
During the course of a lesson he will cover a broad range of topics starting from the basics, and moving into ear training, sight-reading, theoretical knowledge and most important for bass players, groove. Just as every player has their own musical personality and voice, so to does every lesson that Nicholas gives.
In a supportive, patient environment, every lesson is custom tailored to the student.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Home: lessons in dedicated music room with piano and stereo, guitars/basses, cables/amps

*** Specialties ***
Jazz Studies major at Wayne State University. Has a firm understanding of music across both the classical and jazz idioms spanning multiple instruments.

My goal as a teacher is to foster a strong and healthy foundation, so that students are well equipped to pursue and explore music as they desire. Lessons focus on developing core skills, such as music literacy and a healthy, proficient technique, and on fostering a healthy learning process – one that ensures that music is not just fun, but a rewarding, joy-filled process of discovery for a student. It is easy to focus on producing results and treating music competitively, but in my own studies, I have found that it is vital to be able to enjoy the process of learning, or else that original joy for music will be stifled. It has taken me years to learn this, and I hope to spare students that lost time. To this end, lesson materials are chosen specifically for each student, to best cater to their strengths, weaknesses, and musical tastes and goals. I specifically and intentionally approach teaching students the upright bass from a body-centric perspective, utilizing "Deep Listening" concepts. More than anything, though, I'm interested in catering to your individual needs as a student and musician. I'll do whatever I can do to support you in reaching your goal(s) with the upright bass, and try to make the journey to reaching that goal as accessible and exciting as possible!

About Kelley
I've been formally studying music and playing instruments since my first guitar lesson at four years old, when my hands were still too small to play chords on the instrument. Since then, my passion for music has only grown - I've continued to study the guitar, as well as the upright bass, saxophone, and piano, and now hold a BA in Music and German from Hampshire College, as well as an MA in Music Composition from Mills College. I'm currently in the process of applying to PhD programs in Musicology for 2019.

I've been teaching for quite a few years now, and have found that it's another passion of mine. Helping others to learn their own language of music is one of the most emotionally rewarding experiences I've ever been lucky enough to have.

My lessons always start with a focus on listening, and then move outwardly to sounding and mu
sic-making. I'm happy to cater to each individual student's musical goals and needs - so whether you're interested in learning advanced music theory, just learning a few chords on the guitar so that you can play while you sing with friends, or anything in between, I'm more than happy to support you in doing so!

I aim to create as safe a space as possible for folks of all ages, abilities, genders, and identities to explore their musicality.

About Julianna
Dear Student,

I am so excited you want to take music lessons! If you love music, we'll have a lot of fun learning together. My best memories are from playing with friends in band and orchestra. Playing the flute took me to college and to visit Europe, even to meet my best friend and my husband! I love to listen to and teach all kinds of music and can't wait to hear what your favorites are. I studied to be a classical flutist so I play a beautiful silver flute in the orchestra but my husband and I also love popular music. In our group, "Mr & Mrs Music" I play a hot pink flute and he plays an electric cello! We mix classical music, pop, and movie hits and have so much fun performing in our community. I can't wait to meet you and make music together!

Dear Parents,

Thank you for giving your child the gift of music! Even if they don
’t recognize it right away, they are so fortunate to have your support. As the founder and owner of NOVA Music Academy, I believe that children always win when parents and teachers unite to provide support. We hope that by inviting you into the NOVA Music Academy family, your unique child will find joy in learning music and grow to appreciate the deeply expressive power of art for a lifetime.

I can personally attest to the joy that music has brought my life, including full scholarships for a bachelors, master's and doctoral degree and I could never have done it without my amazing flute teachers. I'm looking forward to repaying their investment into the next generation of musicians, I sincerely hope your child is one of them! Having Julie for a flute teacher greatly improved my daughter's proficiency and love for music. Julie was very professional and thorough in her lessons. Most importantly, my daughter was inspired to practice and improve. After taking lessons with Julie, my daughter improved to the level that she began to be hired to perform for Weddings, Church Masses, and Catholic School Masses.
