Hello and welcome to my studio!

Your first lesson begins with breathing exercises as we need air to play trumpet. Proper posture, embouchure, and making a nice sound will come next. And later we will work on the more intricate aspects of trumpet playing such as articulations and range, while learning new songs!

If you are already familiar with the basics of playing trumpet, we will work on the specific areas you want to work on.

I'm glad you have decided to take trumpet lessons and look forward to helping you make great music! So what are you waiting for? Let's get started!

About Andrew

Hello and welcome to my studio! I started trumpet as a young elementary schooler and began teaching private lessons in 2015. I had very poor technique up through highschool but landed a jazz performance major in college. I hurt myself playing and started to tear muscle in my lip. I decided I

I believe that it is very important to have a good musical foundation in addition to playing the trumpet. We will go over aspects of music theory such as scales and key signatures. We will go over the fundamentals of playing trumpet and use exercises from various different method books. We will also go in depth into any styles that you are interested in. I will ask you to listen to recordings of great trumpet players so you can model their sound. Lessons will be rewarding and fun!

About Matt

I attended West Chester University from 2011-2015 and graduated with my bachleor's in music education. I performed in the marching band, symphonic band, wind ensemble, jazz ensembles, various trumpet ensembles, and a brass quintet. One of my trumpet ensembles made it to the semifinals in the Nation

"Ms. Laverty has been my son’s private trumpet teacher since the summer of 2012. She is patient, kind and very supportive of his efforts in playing the trumpet. In large part, she is the reason that my son enjoys playing trumpet and continues to thrive as a musician.

From the beginning she tailored her lessons to include the music that my son was interested in and also added increasingly more complex music to work on and master.

Sandra has taped him playing during lessons to show him how and where he can improve in body position, quality of sound and other nuances. She regularly uses her laptop computer to show videos of performances that support the lesson and also assigns various Internet sites to view for exposure to other musicians and styles.

Sandra regularly provides opportunities for my son to perform in public. He has performed at the annual CMEA event at San Jose State University, and other smaller events where he played solo on stage. They have both joined in at a local café for practice in improvisation, as my son loves to play jazz. This has really helped in his jazz solo opportunities at school. She has also organized a quartet of student trumpet players to work together on various music pieces and then they all performed together for family and friends. This was a unique experience for the children to practice and play together and perform as a group.

My son is also interested in basketball and baseball, and Sandra has been very flexible in scheduling lessons to accommodate my son’s athletic and school schedules. After about 6 months of lessons, she offered twice a week lessons to capitalize on my son’s enthusiasm and increase the speed of musical advancement so his confidence soared and he wanted to play more because he liked doing something he felt he was good at. He kept this schedule for about a year and then back to once a week to allow for more time for other interests.

During middle school, my son played trumpet in both the Advanced Band and also Jazz Band classes. This past summer, Sandra again offered twice weekly lessons to get ready for his high school debut. As a result, he was chosen to play first chair in the high school jazz band. He was also one of only two freshmen that were accepted into the most advanced band class (also known at Wind Ensemble) at Lincoln High School.

I recommend Sandra Laverty, without reservation, for any trumpet teaching opportunity."

"Zachary has been a fantastic instructor for my son who is new to the trumpet and has never taken lessons before. Zachary is a very encouraging teacher, and he communicates very well regarding scheduling. He has also kept lessons fresh and interesting for my fifth grader, sometimes bringing different instruments and teaching tools that keep my son engaged. Highly recommended!"

"My 9year old is loving her lessons with Caleb. He is super patient with her many questions. I personally appreciate his willingness to let me watch/participate and his openness to new ways to approach helping her learn. He handled the differences in what she hears from her band teacher extremely well- being respectful of what the band leader said while explaining why we should really do something different."

"Teaches both technique and jazz lessons. Uses his personal musical experiences to teach his students which range from beginners to adult. He is a very personable guy and easy to deal with. Teaches from Clarke, Gordon, Pappy Mitchell, & Chas Collin etudes and weaves in his own Bob Valli instructional experiences. After having a triple bypass surgery, I was able to hit E's above high C after about a few months of instruction from Phil. He is also a phenomenal performer and one should always take the time to see him perform at one of his gigs. Loved playing the pop or TV tunes he always gives to his students."

His resume is an impressive one, but his personality and teaching style are far more impressive because those are things you can't get from a resume. My ten year old just completed her second session with Caleb and has already shown improvement of which she is super excited about, and can't wait to improve more under Caleb's tutelage."
