Working with Johnathan has been a joy.

It was my purpose setting out to study music in general, not just to study an instrument but to use the instrument as a means of approaching music in the abstract. I set out to study music’s mechanics and theoretical foundations.

Jonathan is very knowledgeable and very meticulous. He has a precise and analytical sort of mind, and very strong foundations in his classical training.

To have a wealth of knowledge in one's subject is not enough, one also has to know how to teach (which is a whole skillset of its own). It is clear Jonathan is an experienced teacher. I have never felt rushed with Jonathan, he is very generous with his time. He provides ample resources for study outside of our sessions, and is quick to respond to emails. He has lent me books, sent me links to videos, and provided me with plenty of homework.

Jonathan has also been very accommodating in allowing me to have some authority in planning lessons and exploring my own interests. Particularly I wanted to study modal music and found a folk song in the Locrian Mode. We took a break from the Suzuki work we had been doing and he helped me transcribe the song and practice.

I could not recommend Jonathan enough, I am switching focus from violin to piano for the time being and will be employing him as my piano tutor, and I’m very much considering taking spanish lessons under his tutelage as well.

Ian Really enjoyed his lesson. Jonathan is very knowledgeable and helped Ian with his basic skills and gave him great pointers. He also gave him an outline and daily practice requirements.
Jordan
Jordan really enjoyed his first lesson. Jonathan validated for him that the daily work he is putting in is helpful and gave him small steps to go forward with.

I really enjoyed my two years of ear training classes at UNT. I learned many different ways to think about intervallic relationships, harmony, and melody. I've used what I learned to transcribe saxophone and trumpet solos, renaissance vocal chamber music, and larger modern music groups. A good ear is equally as important as technical ability on your instrument.

Mason is an incredible performer, teacher, and musician. He is wonderfully talented at breaking down advanced drum and keyboard techniques in ways that players of any skill level will understand. Furthermore, he has a terrific ear for dynamics, musicality, musicianship, and composition. I'd highly recommend him!

Music is the language of emotion. That's the magic of music's beauty—it's an auditory stimulation we experience somatically. (Or more simply, "When we hear it, we feel it.")

Translating that sensation back into music, at will... that's kind of a superpower, isn't it? That's what I teach. The superpower of ear training, for the purpose of reproducing music for your own pleasure and others' delight, lies within your grasp. Some students find it easier to access than others. But at its core, music and the ancient practice of ear training grows from your personal experience of music's emotional language. I just teach you to speak it out loud.

I possess 30+ years of ear training expertise. I'd be honored to share that journey with you.

I decided to take lessons with Edwin for guitar because I had been trying to learn on my own but I just wasn't progressing fast enough. Edwin taught me things you just can't pick up unless you work one-on-one with a professional. He is always on time for our online lessons, friendly, and patient. Every week I felt like I was being challenged just a little bit more and picking up new things. I would recommend him to everyone I know in a heartbeat!

Edwin is a fantastic teacher and so patient. I am amazed at how much my son has learned in just a couple lessons.

I met Lisa while she was teaching Music at the American International School of Mozambique. She taught me for two enriching years and, since then, has continued to be influential in my musical career. When we first met, she was enthusiastic, encouraging, and – most importantly – filled with musical excitement. Under her, I studied the flute (starting as a complete beginner) and I had, within a short time, become a proud flutist. With her encouragement, I continued to study music with the unique opportunity to work with her one-on-one in pursuing an IB Music course. We studied not only the flute but all explored all aspects of music across cultures. While it was a heavy course load, she made the material engaging and interesting so that the work felt effortless and fun.

Lisa has a passion for music that I have yet to find in another teacher. Her unique teaching engages students and challenges them to discover on their own terms. Using games, flashcards, songs, and tapping into student creativity, she introduced and guided me through the complex world of music. I can say without a doubt that she is the reason I still love to play the flute!

I would recommend Lisa to any student: especially for students who are struggling to find their musical niche. Her passion spills over into everything that she does and makes any activity (be it practicing or performing) engaging, educational, and fun. Best of luck on your musical journey!

"Chris is an awesome teacher! I have been taking lessons with Chris for a few months. I had spent quite an extended period studying with other instructors but Chris is still helping develop me to a better musician and guitar player. Have been working on some ear training stuff that other instructors maybe would not have taken the time to work with me on! Working on hearing and playing the divided sky by phish right now not an easy piece of music. Also working on more phrasing and country blues licks and theory. I would definitely recommend Chris to anyone👍🎸"

"It has been a pleasure having Yoon Jae as a teacher. He took a very personalized approach with my ear training, developing a solid idea of my strengths and weaknesses before honing in on specific issues. What sets him apart is that he's adamant about reinforcing the musical applications of the skills I'm developing, and he challenges me in ways that never feel dry or superfluous. I've seen great improvement in the relatively short time I've been with him."
