Patient, focused, encouraging and time efficient. He was good at keeping our youngster on task and making the experience fun. Wish he was able to take our child further with piano. I don't know how much was Tyler and how much was our child, but our kiddo learned quickly from Tyler. Thank you Tyler!

Students will learn how to distinguish notes, rhythms and chords from music they hear. Students will be able to write what they hear and/or perform what they hear.

About Carl

As far back as I can remember I have always enjoyed performing music. I can remember during my elementary school years how I would play drums during church service. Some days I would sneak in my dad's closet to play his saxophone. I began learning how to play saxophone in middle school and by the time I was in high school I was learning piano, performing jazz, and composing music.
I went on to get a Bachelor of Music at the University of North Texas. I have been performing professionally for over 18 years. I also have taught band for 11 years in Dallas ISD. I enjoy teaching and mentoring other up and coming musicians. It's a joy to see another world open up to them through music.
Through my warm and positive personality and experience as a certified music teacher and music performer, I understand how to meet the social and education

al needs of each music student. I am well versed at solving problems and helping students thrive and reach their full potential. I think that I do this best by personalizing the instruction experience for each unique situation. I love to encourage students and help them discover the music in them.

Private Ear Training Teacher

Having a strong ear is vital to be able to move your craft to the next level. Ear training can include transcribing, identifying melodies and harmonies (chords), and sight singing.

About Nick

***About Me***
Music is more than a passion for me, it's how I hear the world! That guy singing the harmony to the crosswalk jingle? That's me.

Though my love for music began long before I ever picked up an instrument, I began taking guitar lessons at age 10. By age 12 I was writing music and by 13 I played my music at my first talent show with my band. In high school, I started studying piano and voice and performed with the Guitar Program, Jazz Ensemble, and Men's Choir. I played solo and with multiple bands, playing rock, acoustic, jazz, rock, metal and classical guitar.

After High School, I spent a year studying music at the University of Oregon. Though I enjoyed my time at U of O, I left the next year and moved to Boston to study at the prestigious Berklee College of Music, where I graduated Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelor of

Music in Film Scoring. While at Berklee, I studied with some of the most acclaimed musicians in the country, studying jazz, arranging, contemporary composition, music production, songwriting and more. After graduating I moved to Los Angeles, where I worked on multiple feature films as a composer's assistant, copyist, music editor, and music supervisor. After some time in LA, I decided to relocate to Portland and enroll in Berklee's online Masters Certificate in Music Business and Technology, which I completed in 2013.

Currently, I'm an active composer for film, Television and video games. Though you won't see me performing on stage as often, I'm very often performing and recording myself and other performers in my home studio. In 2017, I began teaching full-time as an elementary music teacher in Happy Valley.

Music can be a great hobby or a path to a fulfilling career - either way, it's a lot of fun!

*** Lesson Details ***
I teach students of all ages! I'm very easy-going, and I'm more than happy to teach what the students want to learn at their own pace - after all, we're here to learn and have FUN! That being said, I do expect some level of practicing or studying. It's all part of the gig!

During our first lesson, we'll go over what the student's goals are and what styles of music the student is interested in. I use a combination of books, listening, and custom assignments tailored to the student's specific needs.

In the first 3-6 months:

Beginners can expect to have basic knowledge of the instrument and technique, and begin looking at songs incorporate techniques addressed in our lessons.

Intermediate students can expect to address any problem areas in their technique and begin looking at stretching their understanding of theory and technique into new areas.

*** Studio Equipment ***
In-Studio lessons take place in a home studio office, complete with full-size electric piano, recording equipment and plenty of room for parents to sit in on the lessons! Parking is plentiful for most of the day.

I expect students to have their own instrument and copy of lesson material including notes and books. I can provide lesson material while students wait to purchase their own.

*** Specialties ***
Basic to Intermediate Piano.
Advanced Music Theory and Orchestration.
Genres include Contemporary Styles (Pop, Blues, Country, Funk, Rock) Jazz, and Classical

We are loving working with Nick. He is teaching both me (mom) and my daughter (age 6) in beginner piano. He has a great way of teaching so it's not overwhelming, but we feel like we progress each week. He's calm and kind and very well educated in his craft. Highly recommended!

Nick is very professional, kind, and courteous. In our first consultation meeting, he was very interested in assessing my skill level and seeing how he could best help me. He was a joy to meet, and a pleasure to talk with.

However, I am taking a star off because he didn't seem prepared to teach a student at the mid-intermediate level. I wouldn't have taken this star off if he would have shown the initiative to discover my experience level before our first lesson (a 30 minute phone interview probably would have been a good idea). At the time, he didn't have any content that fit what I was hoping for.

Because of this reason, I didn't pursue any further lessons with him. However, based on what I saw and the level of professionalism, I would recommend him to people who are just beginning or are in the developing stages of learning how to play the piano. He seemed to be teaching the perfect mix of theory and practice, which is a must!

My goal as a teacher is to give you the facility to express yourself through music. The key parts to developing this facility are:

1. theory -- if you know your theory, you know the best way to express your idea without having to think about it
2. technique -- the last thing you want is for your technique to hinder your ability to express your idea. Having good technique lets your ideas flow naturally

When you take lessons with me, you get out of it what you put in. Your job as student is to be honest with what you expect to achieve and my job as teacher is to give you the tools to achieve it

About David

I am a bass player first, not a guitarist who also teaches bass. Students will learn technique, theory and groove from a teacher who understands that as bass players, we are in a unique position. Since bass is both a harmony and rhythm instrument we have the opportunity to develop into leaders in a way other instrumentalists don't. I will encourage students interested in exploring this aspect of their instrument

I have a degree in jazz performance from The Ohio State University and have played in numerous rock, jazz and off-broadway bands over the last 20 years. Now playing is something I do primarily for fun and my #1 goal is always that my students have as much fun playing as I do

David went over basic music theory and rhythm with me, and corrected some technique issues. He explained things clearly and when we put some of it into practice in the final minutes I saw instant results. Absolutely excited to do my homework and for my next lesson.

As a beginning, self-taught bass player of four months, I wanted to find a teacher who could analyze and critique my playing. I scheduled five lessons with David over a time period of three months. David was instrumental in analyzing and critiquing bad techniques and habits I acquired. He very thoroughly emphasized proper fretting technique and finger positioning; exercises were given that helped me obtain full tonal quality and efficient fretboard navigation skills. We also reviewed basic theory, scale modes, rhythmic weight, pentatonics and arpeggios; seminal knowledge for the beginner.

A technical type player, David has excellent playing skills as well as a comprehensive knowledge of theory and its practical application. He is a good listener and showed a genuine interest in helping me achieve my goals. I definitely can see an improvement in my playing skills....playing more confidently and efficiently.

Highly recommended.......

David has really tailored our lessons for what I was interested in doing. We are working on technique, musicianship and jazz. He was able to assess quickly where I was at with my skill set and pin point ideas and exercises to help me improve. I'm eager to keep on studying with him!

"Fawn is great. She's reliable, punctual, smart, patient and great training me and my daughter how to sing on pitch. I can tell you that before Fawn, my da
ughter had 3 other vocal coaches and she was frustrated with little or no improvement. Once Fawn came into the picture, that all changed after the very first lesson! My daughter came home last night beaming because she got the LEAD, yes, the LEAD in her school musical. Something that has never happened and would have never happened without Fawn. We are sticking with her. I can't wait to see and hear my daughter and myself continually improve and become the best version we can of ourselves."

"I brought my son to Randy two years ago to see if he would be a good fit as an instructor.

I had always wanted to learn to play the piano myself, but
thought that because I never learned (and probably never would), I would make sure my son learned how!

My son is not only well on his way to learning to play the piano by by ear, he is also having a blast recording his own music! Randy always emails out a recap of the lesson along with things to work on for the upcoming week. I love these recaps because I can listen to the music they recorded and know what my son should be working on. It's great!

I always remembered hearing about what learning to play an instrument was like when I was younger (probably why I never tried to learn), an old blue hair wapping your hand with a ruler when you did not practice enough.

This is not what it is like at all with Randy. Lessons can be as engaging as you want them to be. Randy has a special talent to know what to focus on every week based on how his student is feeling.

I know this because I have witnessed several lessons where my son has been a real bundle of energy bouncing off the walls and Randy was able to reel him in and make progress for the day!

I have enjoyed watching my son grow as a musician so much , that I started taking lessons from Randy about a year ago. My favorite part about the process is I told Randy up front that I wanted to play November Rain by Guns -n- Roses, (no easy task). He did not tell me that it was an impossible, or that it was a bad idea... He just drew the sheet music and we got after it. It has been awesome learning my favorite song along and at the same time learning how to play the piano by ear.

You will begin to listen to all music differently after spending time with Randy, that is a fact.

I have always been a lover of music, but it goes to the next level when you start to gain an understanding and a feeling of how the music is put together.

I know that Randy is able to look down the road with each student and know how exactly how to teach each individual because everyone responds differently.

Randy really does a terrific job making sure you know that it is not IF you will reach your goals, but WHEN.

I am confident that we will be his students as long as he will have us, and I highly recommend you give him a try! You won't be disappointed!"
