I want to make sure my students have a good time learning drums but I also want to make sure they learn a lot..! I always make sure to ask my students what they want to learn and what their favorite music is... after that, I figure out what type of lessons to plan out.

About Emerson
Thanks so much for your interest in starting music lessons with me. I’m so excited to share my passion for music with you! As Lao Tzu said: “Music in the soul can be heard by the universe."

Lesson details:
My main goal as a teacher is to help my students reach their goals. If my student wants to learn how to play rock, hip-hop, and jazz drums I believe that it's my job to teach them how to play those styles..! If my student wants to get accepted into a music school I will make sure that they are prepared for an audition whether it be for orchestral percussion, jazz drums, rock drums, etc.

What students should have:
All students should (but don't have to) have a 3-ring binder to organize handouts in...!

Things that drum students should have: A drum set, drum sticks, a drum pad, and a music stand.

Recommended
books for a beginning drum student:
Fundamentals for Snare Drum by Garwood Whaley
Elementary Snare Drum by Mitchell Peters
Encyclopedia for Reading Rhythms by Gary Hess

Things that guitar students should have: A guitar, a guitar tuner, and a music stand.

Recommended book: Hal Leonard Guitar Method (Complete Edition) by Schmid and Koch.

My specialties:

Drum specialties: Jazz, Latin (Brazilian, Cuban), African, Rock, Funk, Metal, Pop, Hip-hop, R&B, Blues, Country, Reggae, and Marching. I am proficient in drum reading, drum transcription, practice techniques, and drum rudiments and their application on the drum set.

Orchestral percussion specialties: keyboard percussion (marimba, xylophone, glockenspiel, vibraphone, chimes), snare drum, timpani, bass drum, cymbals, tambourine, triangle, orchestral excerpts, etudes, technique, important literature, and practice techniques.

Guitar specialties: reading music, tablature, chords, scales, improvisation, and technique.

Emerson is an amazing instructor. Besides being a very knowledgeable and gifted musician, he’s patient, kind, and makes learning the drums fun. What I appreciate most about Emerson is that he’s interested in helping me reach my goals. I happen to be interested in learning Latin style drums and lucky for me, Latin is one (of many) of Emerson’s specialties. So many people have told me that Latin is hard to learn, but in four short lessons, I already know how to play a basic Bossa Nova beat. Emerson is a very organized and efficient instructor. We work with handouts, video (I record him as he instructs) and reading exercises from a book. A highlight for me in our sessions is when Emerson accompanies my drum playing with another instrument, the piano for example. I really get the feeling like we’re having a little jam session and it's fun because I can hear that I'm making music and that's an awesome feeling.

Choose Emerson as your music instructor and you will not be disappointed.

Wide variety of styles/genres:
e.g. Rock, Swing, Latin, etc.
Includes all snare rudiments, as well as full trap-kit exercises.
Familiarization of multiple time signatures.

About Brett
MUSIC INSTRUCTION AND
ENJOYMENT OFFERED. Very enthusiastic and
experienced musician available for instruction offering the following:

# In-depth written music theory coupled with an equivalent of ear training and tone
recognition

# Introduction to performance skills with instruments that include:

Guitar - electric & acoustic
Drum Kit and percussion rhythms
Piano/Keyboard

# Group lessons or private instruction, depending on personal preferences and age
groups

Personal
experience includes:

1) 15 years of GUITAR: professional performance
and composition. Styles include rock, folk, blues, chord
progressions, and alternate tuning.

2) 15 years of DRUMS and PERCUSSION: Latin, swing, blues, as well as rock, funk, punk, and reduced to
p forty beats.

3) 15 years of PIANO: which utilize
several years of personal instruction in classical, popular, and some ragtime,
in addition to an intimate knowledge of Piano Proficiency (scales & modes,
chord structures & inversions, common chord progressions, intervals, circle
of 5th, and finger exercises)

4) 2 years of MUSIC THEORY and COMPOSITION at college level.

Lessons will include additional materials to the primary instrument such as sheet music for
sight reading, rhythm patterns, tabletures, and chord charts.

***Above all, I encourage students to select those pieces, tunes, or songs that have appealed to them the most; perhaps even inspiring them to learn a musical instrument in the first place. Adaptations are a common and enjoyable part of the teaching process.

*** Lesson Details ***
Expect efforts, on my part, to steer learning into areas of the students particular interest as well as conventional genres such as classical, popular, folk, blues, etc...

Moreover, I rely on ear training as a strong complement to written music theory and sight-reading; often using recorded music samples or simple patterns on a piano.

I try to balance method-type published lesson books with beginner, intermediate, or original composition sheet music to specifically selected pieces.

Ideally, with a reasonable practice schedule each week, full comprehension of the written music grand staff and an ear to catch a false note will become second nature. By then, more opportunities to learn actual pieces and styles become greater, having got the initial learning curve under the students belt.

*** Studio Equipment ***
*snare drum
*electronic keyboard/piano

*** Travel Equipment ***
lesson material/music media samples can be provided for copy
student would have own instrument

*** Specialties ***
Electric Guitar, Acoustic Guitar, Piano, Drums, Percussion, Music Theory
finger picking styles and chord progressions - guitar
lead and rhythm patterns - electric guitar
latin, blues, rock, jazz styles - drum kit & percussion
classical & popular tunes - piano/keyboard

I'm into my second month of weekly guitar lessons with Brett and can't believe how well I am playing already!! I've had some basic guitar lessons in the past but still very much a beginner. Brett knew precisely where to start and what I needed next to advance my playing, and broke it down into attainable steps. So far I've learned a good handful of strum patterns; I can finally play two songs pretty well and sing along; and I am in the rudimentary stage of learning to finger pick. Really love the fact that beautiful sounds are coming from my instrument! Highly recommend if you're ready to make the commitment to becoming a capable player.

What a terrible experience. I signed up for lessons for my wife from Brett as a gift because he listed times that would work for my wife given that we have a young daughter, and have a hard time making time for lessons. Brett told us 3 days before the lesson that the time wouldn't work, then simply never showed for the rescheduled first lesson. Worse, he simply refused to do scheduling via email (he would leave voicemails and failed to return my wife's call when she called back as they were playing phone tag), and then told us he had another commitment during the slot we had supposedly reserved for him. Worse, he failed to update the site as he continually cancelled lessons and never showed up for scheduled times. I now have a huge hassle of getting a refund on the money I paid for lessons as opposed to a lovely gift for my wife. Life's too short and we're too busy for such an awful experience.

Experienced drum teacher of 7 years! My lesson plan is simple : 1. we warm up with basic beats + rudiments + paradiddles, 2. we focus on rhythm + proper technique, and 3. we play a song that incorporates the techniques we're working on.

The time devoted to each portion of the lesson is totally adjustable. You will learn what you want to learn at your own pace.

I could not ask for more in a teacher. Ryan is amazing in every way. He has been teaching my 4 year old son the drums for nearly a year. When my son started lessons, he was actually below the minimum age for students, but he shared a passion for music that Ryan was willing to cultivate and be patient with.

Ryan is versatile in his teaching methods, creative, open, patient. Teaching a young student, Ryan adjusted to teaching music reading fundamentals with colors and shapes. He also figured out ways to correct, critique and build all the while building a young child's confidence.

Ryan provides a written evaluation of our son annually and has him prepare for two public recitals a year. Ryan integrates modern technology into the lessons to quickly provide feedback and create customized beats and tempos to practice to.

Above all, Ryan smiles and laughs. He makes every lesson pleasant and we treasure him, truly.

Cooper is enjoying drum lessons with Timothy. He is very good at keeping Cooper focused and attending to the lesson. He is teaching Cooper to read drum music as well as play, which is great for Cooper as he has a good ear for music; but needs help slowing down and focusing to read the music. Timothy is great about mixing reading and playing the lesson and letting Cooper ad-lib. Thanks Timothy.

I believe teaching needs to be tailor-fit to the individual. There is no one-size-fits-all when it comes to private instruction. Our lessons will begin by me getting to know who you are as a student and as a musician. We will determine what you want out of music and your instrument, then we will set goals to get there. All of this will be a collaboration between me and you. I believe that music must be a self-driven endeavor. It is a vehicle for self-discovery.

That being said, I do believe in having a solid technical foundation, and I will push you to develop a daily practice routine. I try to begin every lesson with a rudimental warmup, regardless of age or experience. I also try to include free-play time, playing together, or playing along to music with every session to have fun and develop creativity. I believe fun, creativity, and human-connection is what music is all about, and technique is the work you put in to make those things happen. We will always end on a positive note ...

About Alex
Alex began his drumming career at age 11, and it quickly became his number one passion. Graduating from the snare drum to the drum set in high school, he learned to love the excitement of the stage with his rock band, Ghost Animals, and dove deep into the world of jazz while playing in his high school jazz band. He pushed himself to be well-rounded by participating in any ensemble he could, from the drum line to the pit orchestra, even winning the local solo & ensemble competition on timpani. He continued to study music in college where he was exposed to composition and music theory. Today Alex continues to share his passion by making a career in music as a performer and teacher. He loves the unique opportunity teaching gives to inspire both children and adults to discover themselves through music.

Whether a beginner or an advanced musician, I love working with students of any age and skill level. I tailor each lesson to specifically fit the student’s skills and interests, making sure that they are not only progressing but enjoying the process of making music.

About Taylor
I'm a video game composer who loves working with students of any age and skill level, whether they are beginning to compose for the first time or have been composing for years. Getting people started composing and watching them discover that they have a lot to say through music, is such a joy of mine. I tailor each lesson to specifically fit the student’s skills and interests, making sure that they are not only progressing but enjoying the process of making music.

My students have gone on to record their music in the Netherlands, write a musical that was performed at their college, write a song for their middle school talent show, score a short film - and much more!

With me, students can learn:

• Composition (any style: jazz, classical, pop – you name it, we can do it!)
• Composing for film, T.V. and video games
• How to us
e music composition software (Logic, Digital Performer, Cubase, Studio One, Pro Tools, Ableton etc.)
• Music theory
• Songwriting
• Music production
• How to use music notation software (write out your parts, charts, lead sheets etc. so that others can play your original compositions)
• Classical percussion techniques

Students can expect to have a lot of fun learning with me! We can write soundtracks, band pieces, solo pieces - whatever the student finds most interesting.

My goal as an instructor is to create excited, focused, and skilled MUSICIANS, not just drummers.

When I started the drums at 8 years old, I've been a dedicated and passionate learner and explorer of all kinds of music, and I believe it has made me a great all-around musician. I believe this positively affects my teaching style, as I approach the concept of drumming through the window of music-making and practical application, rather than only technical drumming execution. Instead, I want to cater my lessons to the interests of my students, and help them build the tools to explore their musical aspirations with me. This will be done by studying songs, genres, performers on the instrument, as well as practicing listening and playing. Music theory will play a role in a helpful way, not as a burden.

I have a Bachelor of Music degree in Jazz Drum Set from the University of Washington, and I am well-connected in the Seattle area with other skilled musicians with whom I connect my ...

About Remy
I am a drum instructor that focuses on musicianship. I’ve been passionate about music since I was born, and have devoted my life to it since I was eight years old. This passion is one I intend to convey to students to help them figure out their own skills and interests.

As your instructor, I like to dive into what it is you like, and help you create that same happiness for yourself through the art of drumming and musicianship. I have a wide range of experience playing and writing music, all the way from jazz and rock, to improvised music, and I use the skills I've acquired from personal events and studying music in college to help interpret the world of music we live in.

From a drumming perspective, we will be focusing on technical skill and drum sound crafting as a base for our training. Meanwhile, we will also be tackling basic
and advanced concepts of musical thinking, music playing, and music listening. Drummers have to be both versatile musically and physically comfortable on their instrument, so the end goal is for us to be able to apply both concepts (musicality and technique) to our drumming lives freely.

I look forward to hearing from you and continuing your musical journey!

I enjoy teaching drums and music, and I look forward to sharing that excitement with you! I have 25 years experience playing drums. I play live shows regularly in several bands, and I have recorded several albums. I will work with you toward your goals, from just having fun to learning hand technique to learning a song to learning music theory concepts. I'll make sure you're seeing progress and having fun!

About Kai
I’ve been performing, touring, and recording as a drummer and percussionist for 25 years. My background in trumpet also provided me with ear training and music theory that I use as a composer. I’ve recently taken up theremin–a fretless and touchless instrument that challenges my intonation abilities. Through these experiences, I have a broad perspective on instrumentation, texture, and the integration of percussion and music.

I always tailor my private lessons to the goals of my students. As we work toward your goals, I weave in core concepts while encouraging each student’s own voice or style. My primary philosophy is that music should be rewarding, so I want to help you have fun today, see progress tomorrow, and also build a foundation to set you up for success in future challenges.

Drum lessons
My focus as a performer and recordin
g artist is on the drum kit, which is a superset of the core snare drum. Within customized lesson plans, I typically include the following key concepts: Hand technique, relaxation, time-keeping, sight-reading, rudiments, music styles, listening/watching, dynamics, phrasing, rhythmic feel, creativity, performance, and more. These concepts are learned in context of your personal needs, and I always make sure we’re having tons of fun!

I also specialize in snare drum concepts, as well as electronic drums. I have a strong background in music theory, and can show you how to use the theory to help you be productive and creative.

Whatever we’re working on–I approach it holistically as music education, not just percussion technique.

Additional music topics
For other musical instrumentalists and songwriters, I can help you take your playing to the next level by teaching percussion concepts in context of your chosen musical instrument. Understanding how to integrate this often overlooked aspect of performance and composition can dramatically improve the rhythmic feel of your portfolio. Learn how to take advantage of rhythmic concepts and elements to improve your sense of time, note placement within each measure, sight reading, push and pull time across phrases, rhythmic feel, pragmatic use of a metronome, and more. As a composer, I can work with you to understand how a percussionist approaches a score or lead sheet, how we think, what we find useful, and so on.

I have a background in fundamental rhythm, rather than teaching the student to simply play, I teach them to read and write their own rhythms and drum beats in a fun and hands on manner using methods that music teachers around the country use in their classrooms. Furthermore, I have years of experience teaching children as young as 4 years old from their very first lesson. I’ve developed my own method for children to read drum music using simple and an easy and simple to understand rhythmic language.

About Trevor
My name is Trevor Sellman and I’m excited to help you learn to play drums and percussion. I have over 12+ years of experience playing and 5 years teaching. I hold a Bachelors in Music Business with a focus on percussion and drum set. I’ve taught students from ages 4 to 50 and I enjoy giving every person the opportunity to pick up some sticks and learn. I’ve played styles from jazz to heavy rock, orchestral to country and everything in between, there’s no style that I’m uncomfortable teaching. I look forward to meeting you and having fun while learning the fundamentals of rhythm, drums, and percussion.
