Drum Lessons in San Jose: Your Guide to Music in the South Bay
Want to take drum lessons in San Jose? You're in a great city to pursue your passion. There are lots of awesome drum teachers in the city, and San Jose is a great place for aspiring drummers!
The first thing you will need for your drum lessons is the right gear. You can buy new and used gear at the San Jose Pro Drum shop, which is owned and operated by Paul Batres and Jimmy DeGrasso. Batres teaches drum lessons, and is very helpful and knowledgeable, and DeGrasso has played with famous musicians and bands like Ozzy Osbourne, Y&T, and Suicidal Tendencies. Stop by the store and these guys will help you find everything you need to get started.
If you're not quite ready to shell out the cash to buy new drum gear, you can get rent-to-own equipment from Music Village. There are two locations in the San Jose area, so you can definitely find a store near you.
When you’re taking drum lessons in San Jose, you have to check out the live music scene. Watching other performers will not only give you inspiration to help you practice, you will be exposed to all different types of music. Plus, live shows are a lot of fun!
Hedley Club Lounge
The Hedley Club lounge is located inside the Hotel De Anza, and it’s one of the best places to see live jazz in the San Jose area. Grab some friends and head to the Hedley Club Jazz Jam. This event happens on the first and third Wednesday of each month, and features some of the South Bay’s best local artists.
The Quarter Note You can see local bands perform live every Friday and Saturday at the Quarter Note in San Jose. There are also pro jams on Sunday, Monday and Wednesday, so once you progress in your drum lessons, you can jump on stage and jam out with other musicians.
This is a smaller venue, but a good spot to see local talent. As the name implies, it’s most well-known for blues performances, but live bands also play rock, reggae, and Latin music.
If you’re interested in learning different types of drumming, which can make for a greater overall learning experience, look into some of the drum circle Meetup groups in your area. Meetup groups are a great way to meet other aspiring musicians, practice buddies, and new friends. The Bay Area Drum Circle (http://www.meetup.com/BAdrumcircle/) and Global Drum Circles (http://www.meetup.com/GlobalDrumCircles/) are two groups you may want to check out between drum lessons.
One of the best things about taking drum lessons in San Jose is the opportunity to explore everything your city has to offer. From drum shops to live music, there are countless ways to have fun and expand your knowledge while you learn your craft.
I'm not currently taking beginner drum students. Please refer to my studio partner Andrew:
Start to learn about polyrhythms as well as developing your ears and body to play songs more accurately. Start to spice up your playing with ways that are interesting, but not intrusive.
Really push your polyrhythms and add asymmetrical meters to your repertoire to expand your grasp of complex rhythms. Also learn to use dynamics, cymbal work, and fills to effectively communicate and lead a band without words.
I'm currently not taking beginner students on voice, guitar, bass, drums, piano, or ukulele. I highly recommend my studio partners Andrew and Melissa though. Please check out their profiles for the following topics:

I've been playing with classical ensembles and rock bands since 2001. Even though I started on classical trombone and rock guitar, I have come to expand my repertoire to a variety of instr
Since 2006 I have been an active teacher. This profession has taken me everywhere from working with classical guitar classes in New Mexico high schools to Elementary students in Japan to a variety of private students of various musical instruments and genres everywhere I've been. Since relocating to the Bay Area in 2010, I've had the pleasure of working with lots of great students from kids to adults with a wide range of ambitions. Since 2012 I've been running my own full time studio along.
Philosophy of Learning
Lessons are generally designed to work towards giving students the tools to accomplish their goals and become increasingly independent over time. While all students will study similar fundamentals regarding technique, theory, and performance, every lesson is as different as every person. What kind of music do you want to make? I'll tell you what you need to do to get there, and help you take the steps to achieve your aspirations.
I also love to help students put together a song, record, and produce it for them so that they can have a recording to share with their friends and family.
I also hold events for my students. (Check out our pictures and videos below!)
Younger students have the "Young Musicians Showcase" every few months where individual students and band classes have a chance to perform and celebrate their accomplishments with friends and family.
Adult students occasionally have events where they get a chance to get together and play music as well.
Aside from in-studio lessons, students also have the option to sign up for online lessons via Skype.
(*Online lessons offered during different times than in-studio lessons.)
*Unfortunately due to scheduling issues, I'm not currently accepting students for bi-weekly lessons. I can do regular weekly lessons, or occasional drop-in lessons, but bi-weekly appointments make it really hard for me to give the best scheduled times to my existing weekly students. I'm sorry for the inconvenience.

As a drummer, I love to perform many different styles such as Rock, Jazz, Latin, R&B, Funk, Blues, and Pop. I had the opportunity to play in the following ensembles while attending San Jose State University: Afro-Latin Jazz Ensemble, directed by Three-time Grammy Nominee Wayne Wallace; Symphonic Band; Marching Band; Jazz Combos; and Percussion Ensemble. I have also played in various musicals throughout the Central Valley and Bay Area. Playing in all of these different ensembles has not only exposed me to variety of musical styles but also made me as comfortable playing in a group setting as in a solo context.

In my lessons I like to help students achieve their musical goals and also make it fun. Lessons will be tailored to the needs and interests of each individual student. I will teach students proper technique and warm-up exercises that will provide them the skills required for the instrument. We will also work on various musical exercises to help strengthen the student's music vocabulary. Students will learn drum grooves from different musical styles such as Rock, Funk, Blues, R&B, Latin, and Jazz according to their area of interest. Technique and practice-exercises provide the core for study and development (but we won't let that get in the way of the fun!).

As a drummer, I’ve been fortunate to study with some of the world’s top musicians. I hold an AA in Drum Performance from Musicians Institute, and studied privately with many great drummers. Some notable instructors include John Xepoleas, Dave Elitch (Mars Volta, M83, Miley Cyrus), Chris Coleman, Michael Iveson (Gotye) and David Garibaldi (Tower of Power).

I will help you get familiar with a drum set or hand drum. I will make sure my students understand proper technique when playing drums. You will learn to count along to the music as you play to keep track of yourself and most importantly to keep a steady pace while playing (keeping time). We will discuss different rhythmic styles and how to apply them to the beat you play on the drums so that you can play any songs you like. I teach all my students to read music for their instrument so they can have a foundation that works with their instrument and other instruments as well. With drum lessons I always play a different instrument alongside to give it a bit of a group feel if you are interested in learning to play in a group. My lessons are adjusted to the specific student's pace and their learning style.
I have been training people in various fields since 2013. I am currently a junior instructor at MTS Studios in Sunnyvale CA where I teach a variety of instruments, including guitar, bass guitar, drums, piano and ukulele.
I am looking forward to helping you further your musical goals and aspirations

Tom is an accomplished drummer with his own unique style and one of the cool things about him is that he is interested in getting to know my son to encourage and develop his own unique musical taste and style.
Tom frequently requests that my son provide favorite songs, and then teaches those beats and techniques. This is a unique quality which makes learning music instantly rewarding for a young person and ultimately provides a foundation that my son can have fun with, as he learns the more technical and mundane aspects of music that every serious student must work through.
Whether you or your child would like to be the next Buddy Rich, Lars Ulrich, Neil Pert or Questlove Jenkins, Tom will work with you or your child to develop both a familiar and meaningful learning program that builds knowledge, confidence and enthusiasm for the drums.
I have the highest regard for Tom and highly recommend him as a drum teacher."
