San Diego: A Great Place to Teach Drums

By David W. – San Diego Drums Instructor

Although I was born in San Diego in 1981, my family moved to Wisconsin when I was very young. Since that time, I have been fortunate to enjoy a successful career as an orchestral percussionist, a jazz and rock musician, a scholar, and a teacher of all things drum and percussion. I moved back to the West coast in September of 2010 to write my (now completed) dissertation.

I love teaching percussion and drum lessons in San Diego. The weather is beautiful, there are many excellent venues for live music, great orchestras, and no shortage of people interested in learning to play! San Diego also serves as a fine base of operations for my career as a performer. Although I'm in San Diego today, yesterday I was playing xylophone in Mississippi at a symphony concert with violin virtuoso Isaac Perlman; a day earlier I was rocking-out at the Soundwave, Mission Beach's top-notch venue for great original rock 'n' roll; the day before that I was performing a solo concert of tabla music and North Indian classical music on drum set; and next week I will share my passion for percussion, drum set, and music to mass audiences of elementary through high school aged youth.

The core of my daily activity revolves around the students in my San Diego percussion studio. I never leave town for very long because being a drum instructor is top priority. Watching kids become inspired and beginners learn valuable life skills brings me great joy, and I hope to be teaching music lessons for many years to come.

About David
After graduating from Salford University, England with a Bachelors degree (Honors) in Music and Composing I worked for a short time as a commercial "jingle" writer, before moving to San Diego, marrying my dream girl, and opening my own music recording, teaching and production studio. From there I have been teaching lessons, recording bands and writing music for independent film ad video games for the last 6 years. Throughout this time I've been continually performing live in venues all over California.

*** Lesson Details ***
I teach both from a privately rented studio in Santee and from my
home studio in La Mesa. Both are fully equipped for guitar, bass and drum lessons and even have recording facilities! In my lesson plans I try to combine theory and technique with practical application (that is, playing music and rocking out!).

A typical lesson begins with a warm up and review of last weeks' lesson, and then moves to a new concept or technique. Once this new idea is understood, we give it a practical application by using it a song the student is familiar with. We finish up by setting some homework and answering any questions the student my have.

My lessons are structured and goal orientated (I want my students playing songs they love as soon as possible to keep the inspiration and excitement going!) but I adapt each lesson plan to suit the student, accommodating different musical tastes and learning styles. Most important I keep the lessons fun and engaging - it's the best way to learn!

*** Studio Equipment ***
Fulling equipped, professional teaching studio.
Guitars, drums, amps, PAs, Pianos, Mandolins and much more!

*** Specialties ***
Very versatile both in preferred styles and my ability to adapt to students requests. Can cover anything from jazz to metal, or pop to blues, on guitar, bass or drums.

Drums is my primary instrument, the one I chose to follow as a career in music. Drums make us dance, make us smile, and they are simply extremely fun to play. The most important thing I focus on is in playing music with the drums. There is nothing more rewarding and fun than playing with and for other people. Whether you are interested in learning how to play your favorite pop or rock song or a jazz standard, I can teach you what makes drumming unique in each style, and what you will need to know to express yourself in the instrument.

About Francisco
I was born in Argentina. I began playing bass when I was ten years old, while my younger brother began playing drums. I started taking bass classes, and also formed several bands as a bass player, although the drums had always been sounding in the back of my head. After listening to Tool’s Danny Carey and Mike Portnoy of Dream Theater, at the age of 17, I realized the drums were my true love, and began studying the instrument. I continued playing bass in several bands, until I joined the band The Evenfall as a drummer, in 2009. At this time, my family was considering moving to the U.S, and tha
t's when I got the chance to apply to the Berklee College of Music. I graduated Magna Cum Laude in 2012 with a degree in Drumset Performance. There I studied with the most respected drummers and teachers in the world, and learned not only from their way of playing, but also from their style of teaching. I have a curriculum which includes material learned from all my years as Berklee, as well as material I acquired in my own experience performing and recording with many acts and in many different genres, ranging from Rock and Metal, to Latin and Jazz, and even Musical Theater.

*** Lesson Details ***
I custom make my lessons to fit each of my student's needs and goals. If you want to study Metal drumming, I won't aim my lessons to teach the same material I teach to a student who wants to learn Latin music, or Jazz. Music is never ending, and different music affects each person differently. Also, every person has a different voice in their instrument. That's why what works for what some people doesn't do it for others. I focus on what is important to YOU, and what better suits your interests.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I could provide the students with sticks and the materials to work on. I would expect the students to provide the necessary books when needed. A drumset is not required for beginners, although it will be for more advanced students.

*** Specialties ***
My teaching method focuses on the interest of the student. I try to have my classes follow each student's own interest and goals, and guide them on the best possible ways to help them achieve those. I try to present short term goals for my students, to ensure that they can experience a feeling on success that will keep them motivated. I specialize in Rock and Pop music, as well as Latin music (Brazilian and Afro-Caribbean in particular).

Francisco is such a great teacher. He tailors his lessons to your needs and challenges you just enough. I took lessons with him for about 8 months, which ended when he moved to the west coast. Otherwise I would still be with him. But he taught me so much and still checks in to make sure I'm sticking with it months after our sessions have ended. He genuinely cares about his students and their love of music and he enjoys teaching and motivating others to play. I highly recommend Francisco as a teacher as he will get you where you want to be.

I took up drums 2 years ago in my early 40's. Francisco was my first drum teacher, and he patiently introduced me to the instrument, exposed me to many different musical concepts and traditions, and really increased my interest in music and drumming. He is an amazing player, and I learned much from watching him play in lessons and also live. Unfortunately he moved from Boston to CA, which was my loss.I reccommend him without reservation.

I took many lessons with Francisco after a period of relative inactivity from playing drums on a consistent basis. I had been playing for years, but had unfortunately become rusty and out of practice at the time. Francisco helped me build my chops back up, and introduced me to new unique concepts in phrasing, approaching grooves, technique, and much more. Francisco's down-to-earth and very friendly personality, combined with his obvious passion for drums and percussion, made every lesson an event I looked forward to. He gave me a lot to think about each lesson, providing me with great musical concepts that can be studied for life. Francisco isn't a teacher who only thrives teaching beginners. As a drummer for several years with lots of performing experience, he still managed to significantly help improve my playing and reignite my spark in drumming. Thanks, dude

I have been teaching drumset to students of all ages and levels for over 5 years. My students are commonly surprised to see how quickly they progress - often within the first couple of lessons, we are playing along to their favorite songs! My approach is very straightforward, fun, and can be applied to whichever style(s) the student is interested in. Having studied with some of the top percussion educators from around the world at Berklee College of Music (including Grammy award winners Mark Walker and Terri Lyne Carrington), I use a culmination of methods along with my own personal experiences to help the student progress.

The drumset student can expect to learn very quickly about the following topics, which can be tailored to their particular needs/goals:

-Proper stick technique/control and posture
-Rudimental studies
-Drumset coordination and independence
-Development of speed and efficiency of motion
-Grooves and various styles of drumming
-Reading music
-Study of ...

Charlie is exactly what I was looking for. My situation is unique but that didn't phase him. By lesson's end, I felt more like a partner in this process than a student. And that's how I operate the best, and learn the most. I'm excited. After all these years, I'm finally going to learn to play the keys!

I've played/taught drums for 40+ years! If you have experience I will listen to you play during your first lesson and create a custom practice routine to help sharpen your skills. If you are a total beginner I'll cover all the basics in a few lessons and get you playing songs quickly. I specialize in rock but teach most styles. I use "Stick Control for the Snare Drummer" and other books as needed, and we will use my electronic drum kit. Your lessons will be fun, challenging, and inspiring!

About Andy
I have been playing drums and mountain dulcimer since the late sixties. My musical background is in rock but I am comfortable playing and teaching most styles of popular music. I've done a fair amount of recording and have performed in every kind of venue, from private parties to concert situations where the band I was in opened for national touring acts. I'm an encouraging teacher, and I especially like working with beginners (of any age - you are never too old to learn to play an instrument). If you have played before, I can listen to you play and suggest a custom practice routine to addres
s and strengthen any weaknesses. Learning should be fun, so I encourage my students to begin playing songs they like as soon as possible in addition to building their skills. Click the green button to request a lesson!

I started taking drumming lessons from Andy in February and I am just having a blast. I am 57 years old and I had absolutely no musical training. I grew up in the 70’s and I enjoy listening to classic rock. I have many friends that play music and they often get together and jam in a garage. A few months ago, I decided that I would pick up drumming so I could participate. I found Andy online and he has since shown me a wonderful world that I can now begin to break down and understand.

Andy explained to me the different types of music from the 60’s, 70’s, 80’s to the present. He also showed me the different drumming styles from the different genres and culture. It is so much fun to listen to him. I often feel like a kindergarten kid that is not taking full advantage of a college professor’s vast knowledge. Most of all, Andy is a very nice and cool guy. He is patient and he takes time to explain everything to me. Andy is very precise in the drumming techniques. I remember a couple of months ago at a jamming session, I was able to see certain drummers’ bad habits and limitations. That was exciting to me because I knew that I was on the right track. My goal is that when I retire, I can jam with my friends and have garage jamming be one of my regular activities. I am confident that with Andy’s help, I can achieve that.

Andy is experienced and knowledgeable. I think he has done pretty much all the things that a drummer could dream of doing, and he is there to help me. I really enjoy my lessons. It is a good way to relax and decompress. If you are thinking of picking up drumming or improving your existing techniques, you ought to give Andy a call. Take it from me, you are never too old to learn!

Students can expect to will learn how to play drum set with proper technique, learn how to read music, write music, and transcribe by ear. We will focus primary on learning songs by ear together! When I teach I am quite fun and energetic. My goal is to help my students grow as students and as people!

About Samuel
Hello, my name is Sam! I received my Bachelor of Fine Arts in Percussion Performance from University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee in 2016. I am currently working towards a Masters Degree at San Diego State University where I serve as a Graduate Assistant. I conduct and artistically direct the SDSU Percussion Ensemble!

Rock n' Roll drew me into playing drum set at a young age. I have coached and taught various high school ensembles, honor bands, summer bands and private lessons.

I teach Drum Set, Marimba, and Classical Percussion. Although these are separate, some of these aspects of percussi
on can be merged if you want. Just let me know when we have our first lesson!

My teaching style is laid back but fun. I like to work from workbooks and sheet music to give a wide understanding of technique and repertoire. The primary focus of my lessons is to make the experience as exciting and fun as possible to help others grow not only as musicians, but as people!

After being a self taught drummer and in need of help, I ran across Sam a soft spoken young man with a great background in percussion instruments. You never know what kind of personality you could end up with, but I scored when I met Sam. He was kind and very easy to work with. He went the extra mile in writing out lesson plans and making sure I stayed on course. If you get the chance to take lessons, take them from Sam P.
