Abby has been very patient with me. I am learning a new instrument and slow right now. She is teaching me the proper techniques that will build in playing the harp beautifully as it is meant to be. I am building strength and gaining muscle memory. Abby is a great teacher. I recommend her to any serious learner.

FAQs:

Do I need to have any musical experience to learn to play the Celtic harp?

It's not necessary to have any prior musical background before embarking on harp lessons. If you have never taken up an instrument before, Anne will teach you harp technique and how to read music, too. It's a plus if you have some past musical experience, because you'll already know the rudiments of reading sheet music. Anne teaches from ages 7 and up. If your child is younger than 7 and anxious to play the harp, get them started on the piano first. This way, when they come to Anne at an older age, they will already know how to read music (harp sheet music and piano sheet music look alike).

Is the harp difficult to learn?

It's no more difficult to learn than any other instrument. If you really want to learn and you practice, you'll learn quickly. It's all about motivation.

Do I need to own a harp to learn to play?

For online lessons, you'll need to have your own harp. You can also buy a harp from Anne. She uses Triplett Harps as rentals and can help you get started on a rent-to-own harp, and is an authorized dealer if you decide you want to purchase a harp in the future. (Note: Anne only rents to students taking lessons from her in her studio. Rentals are not available to students taking online lessons.)

What does Anne teach?

Anne assesses your goals and your experience before designing a learning path that is right for you. For this reason, her lessons are always one-on-one and not taught in a group fashion. Of course, parents are welcome to sit in on their child's lesson.

What is Anne's experience?

Anne studied music theory and received her formal music education at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). When the Celtic harp piqued her interest, she studied harp techniques from world-renowned harpist Sylvia Woods and later contributed to her book Music Theory & Arranging Techniques for Folk Harps. Anne also studied professional stage performance with Ed Hooks (San Francisco, CA) and at the Living History Centre (Novato, CA). Anne applied her formal training to teaching music for the Los Angeles Unified School District. She continues to work with students presenting educational demonstrations for school assemblies. Anne has given workshops to students in the Sacramento Waldorf School, El Dorado Union School District, Merced Union High School District, and Minden Elementary School. She has taught harp since 1987, offering educational demonstrations, focused workshops, and taking on private students. She performed on the 2015 GRAMMY® Award Winning Best New Age Album, "Winds of Samsara".

Liza is extremely flexible and patient. She has tailored each lesson to my specific needs and has given me tools I needed to make me a better harp player. She chooses pieces that challenge me and has allowed me to chose from several different pieces/styles that I would enjoy learning, too. If I had to miss a lesson for some reason she went above-and-beyond to accommodate a make-up lesson. She has always been very encouraging and I have loved having her has my harp teacher! --Olivia (14 years old)

The harp has honestly taught me so many valuable lessons and I would not be the same person without it. I highly recommend it because it is a glorious instrument that will change your life. You will learn technique, theory, dynamics, and different styles of playing the harp. Anyone can play the harp regardless of age. I would say a lesson with me is encouraging, yet challenging. I would you to fall in love with the harp, just as much as I am in love with it and I also want you to feel as though you are being stretched. Happy harping!

About Lauren
Hello, my name is Lauren and I am a harpist living in New York City, Manhattan and Oxnard, California. I first fell in love with the harp when I was five years old. I attended a wedding in Minnesota where I saw a beautiful pedal harp and immediately took an affinity to the instrument. It took my mom and I three years to find a harp teacher, but when I was eight, I had my first lesson. Since then and now, much has happened. I’ve played at several weddings and events. In 2011, I placed second in the Redlands Harp Competition and I have even been blessed to preform at spectacular venues such as The Thousand Oaks Civics Arts Plaza and The Grand Ole Opry in Tennessee. I have also attended the prestigious summer intensive "Young Artist's Harp Seminar." For my first year of college, I was the principal harpist for Pepperdine University's Symph
ony and Woodwind Ensemble. Currently, I am pursuing a Film and Television degree from New York University Tisch as well as involving myself in the music community at NYU Steinhardt.

When I am not harping, I like to watch movies (Wes Anderson films are my favorite!), go to coffee shops, and visit museums. Being able to play the harp is a wonderful experience and I hope to share my gift with as many people as possible.

I believe lessons should be fun and expansive journeys. I enjoy truly connecting with each student in a light, enjoyable atmosphere. Lessons are tailored to meet each student where they are at, while still pushing them at a rate that inspires them. Positive reinforcement and constructive feedback are always used, while negative criticism is not. I specialize in teaching proper harp technique designed to allow the player to play for a lifetime! If pain arises from playing students will never be asked to push through pain or discomfort. Rather, we will find a different approach that works. Lastly, I love working with students on pieces they really love. No piece of music is off limits! We can make any song work on the harp!

About Pheobe
Hello there, and thank you so much for considering me as a potential teacher! I truly love teaching and so enjoy connecting with each and every student.

I have been playing the harp since age six. While I am primarily a classical pedal harpist, I also love to play jazz, pop, folk, and contemporary music. I love teaching all of these styles as well, and students may choose to play either the lever harp or the pedal harp.

I have been blessed to have studied with some incredible teachers. Studying Salzedo Technique with Cynthia Otis, herself a former student of Carlos Salzedo, allowed me to develop strong and stable harp technique. I went on to study both jazz and classical with Felice Pomeranz at Berklee College of Music. From these experiences, I have developed a style of teaching that focuses strongly on technique while incorporating
styles and pieces tailored to each individual student’s musical taste and goals.

Currently, I am completing a certification in Clinical Musicianship. I am thrilled to be learning about the endless healing components of harp music. I believe that music should be a source of joy, a belief that is ever present throughout her lessons.
