We have had 4 or 5 lessons now with Michael and with each one, my 9 year old son learns so much. I'm amazed at the pace at which he is moving; Michael had him playing a song after his first lesson. We sometimes do lessons at Michael's location and other times on Skype. My son really likes Michael and he wants to work hard and keep learning. I highly recommend guitar with Michael.
Guitar lessons can include (but is not limited to): -basic chords in first position and strumming basics -advanced chords in other positions -flatpicking basics -advanced flatpicking techniques (cross-picking, speed and agility) -basic and advanced fingerpicking techniques and styles -learning to accompany yourself while singing -learning to play with other people -participating in jams -basic of chord theory and structure -reading music OR reading tablature OR learning by ear (or all three)

Hi! My name is Michelle. I’m a professional guitar and banjo player, and music teacher! I teach all levels of classical guitar, acoustic guitar, bluegrass and folk guitar. I also specialize in all levels of clawhammer banjo, but also offer 3-finger Scruggs-style bluegrass banjo lessons. I also teach all styles and levels of ukulele from basic strumming patterns to fingerpicking chord melodies.
I cater my lessons to each individual student. I love teaching all levels, so don’t worry if you’ve never picked up an instrument in your life…there’s no such thing as a hopeless case!! I work on building a strong foundation of form a
nd technique in all of my students regardless of level, whether you’re just starting out or are a more experienced player with some bad habits to break or looking to add to your musical toolbox!
My formal training is classical, I have a Bachelor’s degree from Oberlin Conservatory and a Master’s degree from Eastman School of Music, both in classical guitar performance. That being said, I’m a little different than most classically trained teachers, in that I have traveled outside of the classical world to the folk traditions of old-time and bluegrass music, and I am very passionate about this music. I also tour regularly with a folk/Americana trio called Harpeth Rising, which combines both classical and folk traditions into original music (but don't worry, it won't interfere much with teaching!)
My teaching style reflects my combination of influences. My style is fluid, and I work with each student’s individual strengths and weaknesses create a learning environment that is comfortable, relaxed, and ultimately very effective. I also expect my students to schedule regular practicing into their daily routines, which is something I also help my students with.
Thanks for visiting my page!
**Availability notice: As I am a touring musician, my availability is flexible. For online lessons, I may need to reschedule times while I'm on tour. For in person lessons, we may need to reschedule missed lesson while I'm on tour. This will happen infrequently, but I thought I'd give fair warning!
*** Travel Equipment *** I provide my own instrument, and I expect my students to have an instrument of their own. If you need help purchasing an instrument I have 8 years of experience and knowledge of fretted stringed instruments, so I am happy to help advise you once you purchase lessons!
Learn notes, scales, chords, and your favorite songs!
Hello! I've been teaching music full-time for the past 10 years. I graduated music school in 2008, holding a Bachelors in music from Columbia College Chicago, a thriving arts school in the heart of downtown Chicago. There, I primarily concentrated on music composition and guitar, while also studying piano and drums. My parents were musicians and school teachers, so music teaching is very much in my blood. I've been playing and writing songs in bands since I was 12 years old. I recorded 3 original albums in high school, which is a very unique thing. I played shows everywhere in Chicago through college and upon graduating started a successful band called Minor Characters. We worked on albums with Beau Sorenson (Death Cab for Cutie, Superchunk, Bob Mould) at April Base Studios (Bon Iver), toured extensively, and was featured at South By Sout
hwest Music Festival in 2012 and 2013. This past year I spent recording a number of online guitar courses that are available through my business Make Some Noise, Inc.
I did all of this while maintaining a full schedule of music students, where I put on recitals at cool music venues and had kids and adults play together in duos, trios, or bands. I'd love to do the same thing here in Los Angeles!
Very good teacher, knowledgeable, kind and patient

Andrew is so good and patient with my children. He has a firm understanding of music and how to implement that into a kid’s life. He’s so positive and understanding of our needs. The kids have so much fun with learning piano, we’re so glad we found him!
February 8, 2019
Andrew is wonderful! He taught my son piano in our home for several years. Andrew taught all aspects of music, including theory, and gave my son a better base to grow. Besides being a talented artist and great teacher, he's simply a wonderful person.
Through the foundation I've gained by the influences of Mel Bay, Hal Leonard, and Suzuki musical instruction methods, I compile my own teaching materials. Using personally constructed guitar lessons, I demonstrate, instruct, and guide the student based on my assessment of their individual needs, skill level, and progress. Lessons are formulated in Modules, and advancement through them is based on the student's personal aptitude, skill level, and practice commitment. Learning is accomplished by ear as well as through essential methods of musical notation (tablature, 5-line staff, rhythmic comprehension). Students are trained to perform written music as well as to write and express the music within themselves. I'm an encouraging and motivating guitar teacher with a casual relaxed approach. Teaching new guitarists is very rewarding to me. To see the light come on and watch a student perform a song, express themselves musically, and create their own composition is an awesome experience.
The key to learning guitar......is finding the right instructor!
I am an encouraging, effective guitar instructor and an experienced performing musician, offering in-person beginner through intermediate guitar instruction in my home and on line.
It is very rewarding to me to help others along the journey of creative expression through music. To see the light come on and watch a student perform a song, express themselves musically, and create their own composition is an awesome experience. To kick back after a long day and let your soul speak through a musical instrument is a wonderful release. Please let me guide you along this incredible adventure to bring out that inner artist!
You'll learn guitar playing posture, strumming patterns and an understanding of rhythm, tuning, chords progressions and chord theory, basic principle
s of reading tablature and 5 line staff, and great popular songs. You'll be playing your favorite tunes in no time!
Through formal and self- instructed lessons from age 12, I've learned country, folk, blues, rock, and metal techniques and formed several local bands as lead vocalist and lead/rhythm guitarist. Writing and recording my own music has been a hobby for over 30 years.
An active music enthusiast from a young age, I began with clarinet technique and music theory from age 9 through public schools, performing in orchestra and marching band.
I'm enjoying my lessons with Scott. He has taught me a lot. He makes playing and learning exciting. I can't wait for my next lesson.
May 12, 2018
I started with Scott as a newbie and he has definitely helped me grow as a guitarist. He takes time and makes things easier to learn. As complicated learning can be, he simplifies it and breaks it down. When I feel like I’m not progressing he always shows me how I am. His modules are easy to follow. His teaching style is compatible with all types of learners whether you are visual, hands on or a listener. It’s not just business with him. He’s always available for questions after or between lessons. He’s knowledgeable in equipment so don’t hesitate to ask for some advice on what to buy. He’s affordable and lesson times are flexible. I highly recommend him for all ages and learning needs.

Scott has been a great help to me, filling in the gaps and teaching exactly what I request: techniques, specific songs, and lesson times at work for me. He communicates well and follows up after each lesson with emails.

I have been playing guitar for 33 years and teaching since I was in high school. I majored in jazz guitar in college. I have taught guitar at the university and high school levels as well as privately to students from age 7 to 70. I am patient, kind and customize my lessons to various learning styles and aim to help my students stay motivated by helping them play music they really love from the beginning. I would love to help you or your child become a better guitarist!
I am originally from Houston, TX and began playing the guitar at the age of eight and began studying classical guitar at age ten.
While studying jazz at the High School for the Visual and Performing Arts in Houston TX, I began working professionally as a guitarist, playing locally in clubs and at corporate functions. It was also during this time that I first began teaching private music lessons at my local music store.
While attending the University of Miami under music scholarship, I performed in the award-winning University of Miami Concert Jazz Band and played with jazz greats Wynton Marsalis, Joe Lovano and others. I also played in several bands and with numerous local artists.
Upon graduating from college, I coached a jazz guitar ensemble of five undergraduate guitarists and a rhythm section at the University of Miami and
also led the jazz guitar program at Miami’s arts magnet high school, “New World School of the Arts” and taught jazz improvisation to a large class of multi-instrumentalists.
In 2000, I moved to New York City and began playing guitar for neo-soul songstress Angie Stone. We toured nationally in support of her album, “Mahogany Soul” and appeared on the “Tonight Show with Jay Leno”, “Live at the Apollo” and BET’s “106th and Park”. During this time I also performed, recorded and/or toured the US and Japan with Interscope Records avant-garde R&B artist Bilal Oliver, African pop singer and superstar fusion bassist Richard Bona and Japanese jazz pioneer and saxophonist Sadao Watanabe. Along with balancing performing, songwriting and recording, I taught guitar, bass and piano privately to a wide variety of students.
After moving to Japan in 2004, I performed with numerous bands and artists including Japanese taiko drummer Isaku Kageyama. Our CD, “Hybrid Soul”, a creative collaboration fusing musical elements from Japanese folk songs, psychedelic rock and ambient music was released in 2011.
I have over 30 years' experience as both a performer and teacher and this helps me instill confidence in my students and I am able to help them quickly progress on the guitar and have fun doing it!
“Chris was hired by our family several years ago to teach our two teenage sons to play guitar... His musical talent and knowledge along with his focus, maturity, creativeness and personality allows his students to receive his lessons with enthusiasm and retention." - Nancy C. (parent)
I am a novice guitar player who knew a few basic chords before enrolling with lessons from Chris. Since i had an elementary knowledge of playing, Chris asked some questions before we got started on what I was struggling with, and hurdles i was facing.
From there each successive lesson we attacked those weak areas of my play. I was able to get incrementally better each week from the advice and handouts he offered, overall elevating my ability to play dramatically.
Chris is a very down to earth guy - and despite being an excellent musician was not even a little pretentious in carefully explaining concepts that were basic, but that i needed to know.
Overall, Chris takes the time to very effectively communicate how you can improve your guitar skills, and if you put in the practice from his instruction - you'll see the results.

I have also performed live on various radio stations throughout the country. Recently I was involved in a Experimental Post-Rock instrumental project.
I have helped and worked with many students accomplish their own individual goals on the guitar. For instance, I worked with a student who was primarily a rock guitarist, earn first seat in a very prestigious High School Jazz band. I've also helped students pass their NYSSMA (New York State School Association) certifications in both the Classical guitar and Jazz guitar program. I've assisted and prepared students for Talent Shows, band auditions, open mics. music camp and college. I have worked with retirees who always wanted to learn how to play, but never had the time.

After very poor experiences at School Of Rock and Bach To Rock, which emphasized the depletion of my wallet as opposed to actually teaching my son guitar, I went online to search for a Guitar Teacher in my area. Several instructors came up on my radar. but something about James' profile intrigued me and I gave him a call. Instantly, I knew he was the right choice. From his buoyant and effervescent personality, to his savvy curriculum that combines both theory and learning to play songs that appeals to the student's musical interests, James possesses a unique quality that other instructors in the industry should emulate. Every week, my son really looks forward to having his lesson with James, and so do I, since he brings a positive energy into the house that's infectious. My son has progressed where not only can he read music and charts, but also has an arsenal of songs that he can play. In fact, every song my son has requested, no matter how complex, James has been able to teach him efficiently and effectively. Without reservation, I can easily recommend James as a reliable, fun and great guitar instructor.

I took lessons with James for about 18 months. Simply put, James is awesome. He is an awesome guitar player, and a fantastic teacher. I started out a total novice at the time of our first lesson. I could barely switch chords in the beginning. When I look back on what he tought me, I totally appreciate the importance of an actual teacher vs self teaching through videos and articles etc. A teacher is totally necessary and James' lessons covered all styles of music, music theory, improvising, and all done on both acoustic and electric guitars. He made learning the guitar easy and fun, which is always what he emphasized - learning should be fun and enjoyable. At the end of the day it is up to the guitar student to practice practice and practice some more - and with that discipline combined with James' instruction and coaching, you will be set up for success.
"My 9 year old daughter has been taking lessons with Jimmy for about six months. She has learned a lot about the guitar in general, as well as music as a w
hole, and I love to hear her strumming away in her bedroom. Jimmy is a patient and kind teacher, he's very good with kids and my daughter looks forward to her lessons with him all week. I am astounded by how much she's learned in just six short months."
"He is a very good instructor."
"Nick is an excellent guitar player and a great teacher! He is able to break things down in a way I can understand and has taught me to play things I initi
ally thought I couldn’t. Worth it!"
"Great teacher both online and in his studio"
"If you are searching for someone who has talent, enthusiasm and the gift of knowing how to share their musical knowledge with you in a manner that is also
FUN, then look no further. Francesca is the "real deal". In the short space of a single lesson she can tie in music theory, keyboards, harmonica and guitar so that it all makes sense. Thank you Francesca!"
"Always constructive criticism and support"
"Tanisha has been fabulous for me! She adapts to whatever I want to work on without a pause and has given me tips that have taken my guitar playing to a ne
w level. I highly recommend Tanisha as a guitar instructor."
Nobody likes trudging through difficult music that they don’t like. If a song is too hard, it’s not going to sound good. And if you don’t like the song, why bother putting in the effort?
To solve this problem for you, here’s a very eclectic list of easy songs to play on your acoustic guitar.
