About Me

I grew up in the South Bronx during the 70s and 80s. I understand the importance of community and how a neighborhood can be destroyed if the people do not get involved and work together for real solutions. Music and films were my salvation. I began to write songs and play guitar at the age of ten, and 15 years ago I started a band to raise the awareness level of teens and adults regarding the world around them. The band is called Glass of Know. The group had songs playing on rotation on upstate NY

radio.

Although music was my first love I always had a fascination with film. I began to study with the successful theater and film coach Ruth Kulerman four years ago. After many lessons and plenty of encouragement from Ruth, I decided to start testing the waters. Early in 2007 I went out and started auditioning. The response was overwhelming and I landed 17 roles in 5 months. Not a bad problem to have your first time out of the gate. It wasn'€™t prime time or the big screen, but it gave me enough confidence to continue to work hard and more importantly, I knew I had something special to offer.

I've had films in the Asian American Film Festival, New Film Maker Festival, and 2 years ago the film En Route won first place at the Milford Connecticut Film Festival, in which I was the lead. I was nominated for best actor at the Columbia film festival for the short Good Bye. In 2011 I was the lead in the film Down & Across which went to the Cannes film festival. I'm currently working on a TV pilot with the same team. The Coffee List was my first attempt at the writer, director, and actor. The film has been screened at International Manhattan Film Festival, The Katra Film Series and we came in 3rd place for the HollyShorts Challenge on Indi website.

I can teach any level in the styles of Pop, Rock, Folk, Jazz, Blues etc. I have taught many acoustic guitar students and usually create a unique lesson plan for every student. I have helped many people learn their favorite songs and given them the tools necessary for creating their own music. The is an option to learn to read music or just focus on learning songs.

About Christopher

In my many years of teaching and being taught I have realized that the best teachers are those who really focus on the needs of the student and help them realize their passion for playing music. This usually involves a lesson plan which combines both technical aspects and working on songs, so that the student is both working and having fun at the same time.

A little about me: I am a professional bassist, guitarist and producer working out of Brooklyn. Since getting a Batchelor's degree in Jazz Studies from NYU, I have performed in festivals and concert halls all over the world. Notably, I have toured extensively with Blue Note-Capital recording artist Kandace Springs, with whom I opened for Daryl Hall & John Oats and Train at Madison Square Garden and dozens of other arenas.

I can travel to Brooklyn and Manhattan to give lessons

. I can teach kids as well as adults.

*** Specialties ***
I can teach from beginner to intermediate on guitar, and beginner to advanced on bass guitar and upright bass in the styles of Rock, Jazz, Blues, Pop, R&B, Hip-Hop etc. I also have experience in other subjects such as Production, Composition, Music Theory.

Chris was on time and well prepared. He spent time understanding where my 11-year old son was in terms of skills, experience and interests, and tailored the lesson accordingly. My son thinks Chris is "awesome", and is looking forward to the next lesson!

I've really enjoyed taking lessons from Chris. He is knowledgable and able to articulate intricate musical concepts while presenting a casual, welcoming vibe. He honed in quickly on where I was in my training and steered the lessons to what I needed most to learn at that moment. I've progressed quite a bit since taking lessons with Chris. I'm playing more and better and I can't think of any higher praise for a teacher.

It was always a lifelong dream of mine to play the bass and Chris has made that a reality by providing affordable lessons and taking a slow, hands on approach to teaching me the bass. He is also such a nice guy so that makes the whole experience that much better. I am forever thankful that I met Chris and look forward to working with him more!

Private Acoustic Guitar Teacher

I'm a specialist in Brazilian Guitar and have played and used American Folk Styles to teach finger picking for many years. This includes Travis Picking, Blues and arrangement of all sorts of melodies for guitar. One of the first world musics I played was Irish music and I have a nice repertoire of these melodies to help the student learn how to play a linear melody. Reading is not necessary but I'm expert at getting people to read by using simple familiar music.

About Billy

Billy N. has played Jazz, Brazilian and Classical music in the NYC area for the last 20 years. He has actively taught both finger-style and pick guitar for the last 20 years. He was on staff at the American Institute of Guitar for 11 years. His book on Brazilian Guitar is published by Alfred Music and currently available. He now offers online lessons via Skype as well as in his private studio. Playing credits include many museums and clubs in the NY area including Museum of Modern Art Museum of the City of NY and an extended stay at the Guggenheim museum in the Summer of 2000. Also he has been in the Brooklyn Museum concert series with his group Afinidades Bronx Libraries Brooklyn College and the Jewish Museum in trio and duo setting with great Percussionist Vanderlei Pereira. He has performed in Brazil as well most recently in the South

of Brazil,  receiving TV and radio coverage. He has also done workshops and performed at the Conservatory of the state of Pernambuco. In August 2004 he performed weekly at Rio Scenarium in Rio de Janeiro. His Band Brooklyn Brazil Bop has played at Joe's Pub as well as Central Park Festival. His band the Brazilian Acoustic ensemble performs periodically at 'Barbes' an important performance space in Brooklyn NY. In 2007 he gave a successful jazz workshop and concert in the city of Florianopolis Brazil. Billy has been awarded 3 prestigious composer's residencies 2006 - Yaddo and 2007 - The MacDowell Colony. He was featured on the PBS news hour during his residence at MacDowell. In 2008 he was awarded another MacDowell residency and followed this with a 3 hour appearance presenting his compositions live on WKCR Jazz Radio and another live radio appearance with band in 2010. Billy regularly plays in many venues around NY in Jazz trio settings as well as with Brazilian vocalists and instrumentalists. Most Recently his groups have been performing at the famed Cornelia Street Cafe in New York City. He also specializes in solo guitar and can double on percussion (Pandeiro) and Cavaquinho. Billy has completed two CD's of his original music and an EP of his original Choro music. He has a BFA in Jazz Performance from CCNY.

Testimonials:
From Coda Magazine August 2012: by Seton Hawkins

Through outstanding collaborations like the Brazilian Acoustic Ensemble, guitarist and composer Billy N has emerged as a leading exponent of the music of Brazil. Exploring far beyond the well-trodden bossa nova path. Billy unearths the full range of styles the country offers, including choro, baiào, valsa and samba, and gives American audiences a rich panoramic glimpse into Brazilian art, highlighting its parallels with progressive jazz.

A recipient of composers residencies at Yaddo and MacDowell Colony, he is the curator of a three-day series at the club dedicated to the country's music. Billy will showcase his own group—a sextet with drummer Matt Kane, bassist Leco Reis, saxophonists Michael Attias and Eric Schugren and trumpeter Ben Holmes—in a concert primarily featuring his original works. SH

Reviews of my Book on Alfred Brazil: Guitar Atlas,  I love this series and this is the best of the six titles I have. Billy really knows his stuff; the analysis of time at the beginning is superb: something I now use in my teaching. This is definitely for intermediate and higher guitarists, but the pieces are worth the effort to get right, and the accompanying CD shows you what you are aiming for. This is as good as my other Brazilian guitar book (by Nelson Faria) and much more compact and easier to follow. Highly recommended!

#2

This book is essential homework for students of Brazilian guitar. It is one of the best resources out there, along with Nelson Faria's "The Brazilian Guitar Book." The original etudes are not only instructional, but are nice pieces in their own right. An excellent value.

*** Lesson Details ***
I've taught all levels over 20 years both in NYC and Brazil. I work with the material that the student wants and also through recordings and charts introduce much music that the student might have been unfamiliar with. My lessons are catered to the individual. There is no obstacle anyone has that is too great to work through. My approach to rhythmic training has helped many. I have simple way of breaking down the guitar fingerboard which can used as a guide to learn harmony. I'll get you into the horizontal aspects of guitar, traveling across the neck, making music across one string as well, mastering the guitar in a small fret range - " vertical position playing".

*** Studio Equipment ***
I have guitar for the student, either electric or nylon. Cavaquinho students bring their instrument. First time students must bring their instrument so I can see what they are playing on.

*** Specialties ***
Brazilian Fingerstyle - Choro, Samba, Baiao Solo
Jazz Guitar - Pick or Fingers
Beginning Flamenco
Cavaquinho
Improvisation for any instrument
Harmony and Theory

I have been taking lessons with Billy since January 2015. I am a total beginner and I really think I have made the best choice ever to pick him as my teacher. Billy is an experienced guitar teacher and a professional player that knows great techniques for beginners. He has been teaching me basics of guitar in a smart way, and at each lesson I feel I learn something new and at the same time I can clearly see how much progress I have made since our first lesson. He has also been teaching me how to read music and tabs which proofed to be extremely useful every time I want to learn a new song by myself. Highly recommended!

I cannot recommend Billy enough. I studied jazz improvisation with Billy for three years, and later returned to study Brazilian guitar and Piedmont-style finger picking with him. I had been playing for more than twenty years when I started studying with him and he not only helped me improve my playing technically and creatively (on electric and nylon stringed guitars) but also expanded my knowledge of theory and helped me develop new approaches to composing and arranging. I am still working with the material he gave me and take lessons from him whenever my schedule allows.

I took Brazilian guitar lessons from Billy for several years. His method focuses on absorbing the many rhythms of Brazil and translating them from percussion instruments to the guitar. Much of his effort is devoted on achieving the elusive Brazilian swing, which non Brazilians need to learn. Billy is excellent in breaking down the rhythms and explaining them. He even has a book out on his method. He covers various Brazilian genres: choro, bossa nova, samba, baiao and more.
Billy also is an accomplished jazz, classical and flamenco guitarist with a thorough understanding of harmony and improvisation. He is very patient and has years of teaching and performance experience. You will be lucky to study with him!

I've been playing guitar for recordings for years, and can show you the fundamentals of rhythm guitar, finger picking, and soloing.

About Chris

I'm a bass player, educator, composer, arranger and band leader living in Brooklyn, NY, and am active in a diverse group of projects that include polka, jazz, classical, and commercial music. I've been teaching double bass and electric bass for 20 years, and have recently added synth bass to my lesson repertoire. I grew up playing orchestral music, jazz, and rock throughout high school, and attended NYU Jazz Performance program, from which I graduated in 2005. While there I studied with a variety of teachers including John Scofield, Mike Richmond, Billy Hart, and Ron McClure.

I've performed with a wide variety of acts, including The Lone Bellow, Grace McLean (Marya in Broadway's "The Great Comet of 1812"), Major Attaway (Genie in Broadway's "Aladdin"), Donnell James Foreman, (Broadway's "The Book Of Mormon"), and I'm currently the Mus

ical Director for Melanie Penn and Porter and Sayles. I've appeared in performance on ABC's "The Chew" and "The Bachelor," and perform regularly with New York City's most renown Polka Band, The Polka Brothers.

I've thoroughly enjoyed working and growing as a musician, and I'm passionate about helping others do the same. I currently teach at NYU, as well as occasional programs at the Turtle Bay Music School in Manhattan.

Guitar lessons are a fun, laid-back, and encouraging experience for anyone to pursue. My lessons are specifically designed to accomplish the goals of the student, whether it's as simple as playing along with your favorite songs, or obtaining the musical foundation to begin writing your own songs. Former students have thanked me for being laid-back, non-rigid, and down to earth. My diverse musical background lets me offer students of any genre a fast track to learning the skills they desire, and having fun along the way as well!

About Nikolas

With 10 years of live band experience, 8 years of music composition, and 7 years of teaching guitar, I offer vast expertise and a large musical background for very affordable rates! My lessons are described by former/current students as being laid-back, detail-oriented, and very encouraging. My students range in age from 8 years old to adults in their 30's. You can always learn something new!

Most of my musical experience has entailed Rock, Indie-Rock, Blues, Acoustic, Bossa Nova, and Experimental/Contemporary. If students are looking to expand into a genre which I am not necessarily familiar with, I am always able to examine and learn the material myself in order to pass along to the student.

My students always decide the curriculum and pace which they would like their lessons to held at. I make sure to break the lesson down into simp

le, fundamental bullet points so that students do not find themselves lost or confused. Overall, my combination of friendly attitude and communication skills means that all my students get a lesson they enjoy, remember, and improve with.

With a Berklee degree in Professional Music with an emphasis on Performance as well as over five years of performing and teaching full time, I offer a unique combination of talent, experience and a love for teaching. You are getting a teacher who defies the standard, "those who can't do, teach" because you are gaining an instructor who regularly performs in addition to teaching. At the same time, you are not getting a teacher who only plays and has no concrete lesson plans or goals for you because I have extensive teaching experience as well. For me, one of the greatest joys of teaching is watching students take all the hard work they've done and perform for their school or get accepted to a conservatory.

About Phil

I have taught students as young as four years old to adults and everything from pure beginner to advanced students who want to learn more about jazz, music theory or technique. I teach a wide range of styles including current pop/top 40, classic hits, jazz, funk and classical.
