My goal as a teacher is to give you the facility to express yourself through music. The key parts to developing this facility are:

1. theory -- notice i say theory, not rules. learning music theory is not about learning rigid rules that will stifle your creativity. when you learn theory, you learn to identify patterns and give them names so you can remember and reuse them. the more you know your theory, the more ways you know to express your ideas
2. technique -- the last thing you want is for your technique to hinder your ability to express your idea. Having good technique lets your ideas flow naturally. and really, why would you not want to be the best you can be?

When you take lessons with me, you get out of it what you put in. Your job as student is to be honest with what you expect to achieve and my job as teacher is to give you the tools to achieve it

About David

I have been playing music almost my entire life. I first started on trombone in 4th grade then switched to guitar in 6th. I picked up the electric bass in my later teenage years and learned the upright bass (both jazz and classical) in college. My students get the benefit of my education, as well

5 lessons in and David has gotten me to break through some of my bad techniques and has also given me completely different ways to think about my instrument. We're just getting started and I couldn't be more excited to see where this journey is going to take my skills.

David was/is a great guitar teacher ! I came to him with some knowledge on how to strum but he completely transformed my technique... making it easier & better to play! I’m looking forward to continuing my lessons with him & improving my guitar skill!! I Highly recommend David !

Very grateful to have found David on this site and add to the chorus of great reviews. I have entered the world of music through the bass guitar with David's instruction and am already hooked. Bass is a fascinating (and challenging) instrument so I appreciate working with a professional who caters to beginners. I am looking forward to exploring more about music with each lesson and gaining more confidence playing this instrument. Thanks David!

I have studied music theory at the college level and have been writing and composing for over a decade, both alone and in a number of successful bands. I believe in theory as a creative tool rather than simply as an intellectual exercise, and I put strong emphasis on putting knowledge to use.

I had a one off single lesson with Matthew, I was only in New York for a couple days and was lucky enough to get a sing writing session with him. He gave some great insight and valid techniques towards song writing. He was easy going and very friendly. Would certainly recommend.

Matt is an awesome instructor. Unlike a traditional guitar teacher, Matt understands what his students want to play, making lessons much more interesting and making practicing much easier. I've had a few lessons with Matt and have learned more in those lessons that I could have ever learned by myself. Highly recommend.

Just had my first piano lesson with Matthew today. He is a truly great artist and instructor who will teach you not just about the playing technique but about the music theory/history behind it. Would definitely recommend!

Ear training entails cultivating an inner understanding and conception of music. Through ear training, students can learn how to identify the pitches, rhythms, and harmonies in music and sounds they hear around them. Ear training can also help develop the ability to look at a written piece of music and know what it sounds like!

Most ear training comes in two distinct categories: transcription, aka the categorization of what you hear around you (learning to write down what you hear) and sight singing, aka learning how to hear sounds internally and reproduce them with your voice (learning how to hear what is written down)

Matt Burkett is a great music instructor. My son has been his student for about 2 years already . Matt helped my son improve his sound, his low notes, and sight reading. But most importantly he motivates my son to practice more and have fun playing his saxophone.
Highly recommend.
Chad
I've been playing the saxophone for 10 years, and I have never sounded as good or felt as confident since taking lessons with Matt. Matt plans lessons around achieving my goals as a musician, specifically improving my improvisation. Matt explains ideas I have struggled to comprehend in a way that makes me feel like I could have discovered these musical ideas myself. We work on everything from fundamentals, sound, technique, and theory, and Matt provides fun exercises that allow me to put ideas into practice. Contemplating concepts like voice leading, chord progressions, and substitutions have given me a plethora of material to keep me busy, and makes me excited to pick up the saxophone and continue working on my musical journey. I highly recommend lessons with Matt for any level player.

"Can't say enough about Yoon. He is not a mere teacher, but a mentor of sorts. Not only does he know his stuff, but what he teaches can be applied to other areas of life. He goes above and beyond the material. Teaching you not just about music, but how to learn more efficiently and how to build yourself up. Here I was, late to the music game, playing catch-up. In a couple of months, I have made massive improvements to my rhythm and intonation. More than that, Yoon instills a drop more of confidence in me every single lesson and that is invaluable. I would recommend him to anyone who is serious about getting right kind of instruction!"

"I needed help singing in the church choir. Rebekah was amazing and personally took the time to teach me and work with me to help me to be able to sing in the choir on Christmas Eve. She was very patient and never criticized, but gently taught me to sing various styles of notes. I'm not a musical person, so I can't really get the terminology right, but she helped me to be able to located the different notes in the hymnal as I was singing. On Christmas Eve, with Rebekah's lessons, I accomplished what we had set out to do and was able to sing in the Christmas Eve service.

I've also known Rebekah personally for a long time now. She is full of personality and is exciting to be around. She is very professional and kind to all of her students. She is patient, considerate, and her students thrive under her supervision. I would highly recommend anyone to chose Rebekah as their personal instructor and not only for themselves, but for their children as well."

"It has been a pleasure having Yoon Jae as a teacher. He took a very personalized approach with my ear training, developing a solid idea of my strengths and weaknesses before honing in on specific issues. What sets him apart is that he's adamant about reinforcing the musical applications of the skills I'm developing, and he challenges me in ways that never feel dry or superfluous. I've seen great improvement in the relatively short time I've been with him."
