Students would be able to learn Classical Guitar from the beginning and progress to learning compositions on their own. Preparation for competitions, such as NYSSMA is provided as well. Students are taught to play the music with feeling and moving up to advanced levels.
About Alex
Education and Experience: B.A. & M.A.in Guitar/Music Education from Brooklyn College. Music school training from early age on Guitar, Piano, Saxophon
*** Lesson Details ***
I am a laid back teacher with many years of experience, which gives me the confidence to make the lessons fun and educational. Even though I am not very strict, I do have some expectations of my students: they will have to practice in order to be ready for the next lesson and in order to improve and show progress. After 3 or 6 months, my students will be able to play songs with various chords already, be able to read simple music and start learning how to improvise.
*** Studio Equipment ***
Living Room: Amps, guitars, full keyboard
*** Travel Equipment ***
I would provide the book for the student on the first lesson, however after that the student would have to purchase the book. I will have my own instrument, but the student must have their own instrument in order to be ready for the lesson. I do have a number of guitars and if its a guitar student - I would be able to let the student use one of my guitars on the first lesson.
*** Specialties ***
I teach many various styles and incorporate the reading and music literacy in all of the styles. I specialize in teaching Classical and Rock genres of music. However I have taught: Metal, Bossa Nova, Pop, Punk, Flamenco, Progressive. Teaching classical genre - I incorporate a lot of various techniques that are very broad in spectrum to help the student learn to perform the music, read, improvise and compose. Teaching Rock genre - I teach my students to read music as well and concentrate on improvising and soloing techniques as well.

I have studied with Alex for over 5 years, time in which I feel I have accomplished so much on the guitar. Alex is awesome! He has real passion for the music and the instrument he teaches, he is extremely patient, has great insights in explaining the music or the techniques and shows a great resourcefulness in approaching various methods to each musical style he teaches.

Alex is a great teacher. He is extremely patient and very good at taking his time to explain the things you do not understand. It's easy for me to express my own concerns as well as ask him questions. I also think his teaching techniques are great. He uses songs of your choosing as well as knows plenty of songs to advance your techniques with the guitar in realistic stages. He is good with constructive criticism. I like his honesty and directness, but he never makes you feel like you can't do it. Alex can spot things wrong with your technique quickly and help correct them. He also promotes a positive environment for those not yet confident in their playing.
I am very happy with Alex as my guitar teacher and feel that I can learn so much from him and I would definitely recommend him to another guitar player.

About Sze Lim
My name is Sylivan. I'm a dedicated musician who is passionate in music education and guitar music. I have majored in Music and received my professional training at City College of New York with a minor in Education. I have been playing music for 20 years and have performed in many different occasions. Over the years, I have developed various kinds of skills in music from my education, formal training and experiences:
- Learned various types of music for over 10 years such as classical, rock, and pop
- Avid guitarist and also proficient in bass, drums, piano, and vocal
- Solid foundation of theory and harmony
- Worked as music and guitar instructor for private music lesson and other organizations such as summer camps and private music institutes.
I have also been teaching children and teenagers music for
- Explaining the structure of guitar and giving the basic information about the instrument
- Instructing students about both the basic and advance techniques in guitar playing
- Striking a fine blend of theory and practicality while teaching guitar playing
- Ability to understand the needs, short and long term goals of different students and changing the methods of teaching accordingly
- Preparing students for student recitals or public performances if necessary
I'm funny, friendly, outgoing, and love to play guitar. Iām also flexible and easy to work with, however when it comes to learning Iām strict and serious. Some of my students call me āThree-Faceā, for Iām not only your teacher but also your friend and your coach: I will introduce you to the world of guitar as a teacher; jam and have fun with you as a friend; and I will train you and make sure you are on the right as a coach.
I like all kinds of music, from Classical to Metal and everything in between. Some of my favorite bands/artists who influence me include: Joe Satriani, Slash, Santana, Jimi Hendrix, AC/DC, Metallica, Guns Nā Roses, Led Zeppelin, Disturbed, Antoine Carre, Niccolo Paganini, Antonio Vivaldiā¦
Sharing my knowledge in music and guitar makes me happy, and it is the greatest joy for me to see my students grow and play the music they like. Guitar lessons should be fun and enjoyable, yet challenging.
Thank you very much for visiting my page and I hope to teach you soon!
Best wishes,
- Sylivan T.
*** Lesson Details ***
During our first lesson, we will first talk about your goal and music direction that you want to pursuit. Then based on your goal and direction, I will customize a curricular track and briefly explain the things that you need to know and what you need to focus on in order to achieve your goal.
As your instructor, my goal is to help you to reach your goals and to have fun with the music you enjoy. In each lesson, according to your progress, I will introduce you new concepts/materials using fun and easy-to-learn activities. Then we will work on the materials together and have fun jamming together. Yes!! You will feel like you are jamming along with your friend instead of taking a guitar lesson, because guitar lessons suppose to be fun!!!
Each particular lesson I will assign you some assignments. They would either be things that we already jammed on during the lesson, or something that I want you to work on your own. Then when we meet again, we will go over the assignments together and I will give you comments and advises to help you play better.
Below are only some of the instructional books that I usually use for teaching beginners. I will also use other instructional books and music repertories according to the ability of the students and their music style:
- Hal Leonard Guitar Method: Will Schmid and Greg Koch
- Alfredās Basic Guitar Method: Alfred dā Auberge and Morton Manus
- Hal Leonard Rock Guitar Method: Michael Mueller
- Solo Guitar Playing: Frederick M. Noad
From my experience as a teacher and student, I believe there is no such thing as a āPerfect Instructional Bookā. Therefore along with the above instructional books I will add in some other activities and exercises written by myself.
*** Travel Equipment ***
I expect my students to have a guitar and a chromatic tuner. Also a note book, some staff paper, and a pen and a pencil.
For electric guitar, it's necessary to have an amp and a .25 inch cable at home
*** Specialties ***
Usually use Mei Bay Guitar Method as a general guide and text for guitar teaching.
*** Specialized in classical, rock, blues, and pop ***

About David C.
CloseAbout David
In 1997, I moved to Brooklyn and cut my teeth in the NYC R&B and rock club scene and with various jazz combos at many other clubs including the Blue Note and the Knitting Factory. In 2003 I returned to college at CCNY (city college of New York), majoring in Jazz Performance and studying with Ornette Coleman alum, Kenny Wessel. I also started my long standing weekly Hip Hop event, Freestyle Mondays in the East Village. Freestyle Mondays has attracted some of the best musicians in NYC and the world to sit in or just hang out, including Tarus Mateen, Marcus Miller (Miles Davis bassist)
For last 6 or 7 years, my bread and butter has been theater. It really tests my versatility. I have been a sub guitarist on Broadway for the Tony award (best score, best orchestration 2008) and Pulitzer prize winning musical Next To Normal, The Visit on Broadway, first guitar at the 2010 Williamstown Theater Festival Production of critically acclaimed musical "The Last Goodbye" which features the music of Jeff Buckley (the first project licensed by his estate since his untimely passing in 1997), Be More Chill at Two River Theater as well as many other regional theater productions. Most recently I performed with the Orlando Philharmonic and a veritable who's who of B'way including Kelli O'Hara, Chita Rivera, Brian Stokes Mitchell and Norbert Leo Butz in Orlando at a benefit for the Pulse Nightclub victims' families. My main gig, however, is with The Midtown Men. It features 4 stars from the original cast of Jersey Boys on Broadway. We have played at venues all over north America including the Beacon Theater and NJPAC as well as having a PBS special and performances on the Today Show.
*** Lesson Details ***
Like my musical abilities, I am an extremely versatile teacher. If you need a strict program, I can "crack the whip", but if you'd rather just learn some tunes you like, without all the theory and technical stuff, we'll find a balanced program that works for your learning style.
I have been teaching for 18 years, so whether you're trying to make the high school all state jazz band, learning your new favorite song or anything in between, I can steer you in the right direction. I'll keep you motivated to improve and become the artist you want to be. With simple, clear direction from me and a little practice and hard work from you, we'll have you playing your favorite music in just a couple of months.
*** Studio Equipment ***
Dedicated to music, many guitars and amps, weighted casio, room for parents to wait
*** Travel Equipment ***
I can provide a guitar, but if a student is going to practice, I would think they would need to purchase a guitar at some point. I suppose I could bring an amp as well. Students should also have a manuscript book and/or a method book (depending on their level).
*** Specialties ***
I specialize in jazz guitar, but am experienced and well versed in rock, blues, classical, hip hop, R&B, funk and pretty much anything else.

I am very laid back and friendly, and I want you or your child to be as comfortable as possible during our lessons. You or your child will develop confidence and musical intelligence. I will make your lessons fun, enjoyable, and effective. Boredom is not an option! Music is fun... let's keep it that way.
The teaching methods I use will be custom-tailored to your individual needs, personality and specific musical goals. If it's guitar or piano you want to learn, I want to get you playing exactly what you want to be playing as soon as possible. That's what you're here for, and that's what I'm here for. I will make it happen. If it's songwriting that you want to learn, I will help you access that place inside of you that is dying to express itself creatively, and will teach you techniques to harness that energy and translate it successfully into musical expression.
You can expect to learn all the basics of music theory, proper playing techniques, improvisation and spontaneous musical expression, and I will help you develop your "ear" so you can figure out songs you like just by listening to them. This is all about you and your goals, and I want you to achieve them in a fun and engaging way.
*** Studio Equipment ***
Living room: Upright piano, guitars, amps, keyboard, percussion
*** Specialties ***
I specialize in pop, rock, classical, jazz, blues, folk, fingerstyle (guitar), etc. I also teach improvisation and songwriting, and try to develop the student's ear for figuring out songs they like on their own.

About Marlon
Motivated by his passion to bring the wonderful music of the classical guitar to a wider audience, Oliveira has overcome many obstacles to his goals: He started the guitar at the late age of 16, significantly behind his peers in music school; he did not pass his first audition to get into music school, but changed his teacher and worked even harder to get in; and he overcame the debilitating effects of Repetitive Strain Injury that plagued him for 3 years by committing himself the study of better technique, better health, and better practice habits. Oliveira says, āThe injury slowed me down a bit, but I remained persistent in my practice and my studies and I have recovered s
Before auditioning for music school, Oliveira was enrolled at Queens College as an undeclared major. āI was scared to do music, because it seemed like such a hard living, especially when I saw many other guitarists drop out of the music program. But then I realized if I didnāt devote myself fully to the study of music, then nothing was going to happen with it, so I put everything else off to the side to pursue my degree and a life of music.āSince earning his degree in music, Oliveira continues teaching music for a living.
Since his graduation in 2011, Oliveira has performed at the International Toronto BrazilFest, at LIC Concerts, with the NYC Guitar Orchestra, and in many private events.

Classical Guitar Lesson Reviews from Students
Students are raving about their Classical Guitar instructors on TakeLessons. Check out some of these recent reviews.
Drew does a fantastic job at teaching classical guitar, and at the same time introduced me to the more modern world of improvisation guitar, which I now enjoy a lot more than before.
I'd highly recommend Drew if someone is interested in a well rounded musical education that goes beyond just playing an instrument. I not only learned a lot of guitar, but feel I'm an all around better musician after taking lessons with Drew"
