Classical guitar students start with five subjects.

1) Technique is concerned with the development of the physical mechanics involved in playing the instrument.

2) Scales are a part of basic music vocabulary and building blocks of the musical language.

3) Chords are also basic vocabulary of the musical language.

4) Note reading is not required for every student. It really depends on the students' goals. However, I strongly encourage everyone learn to read musical notation, (more than tablature). Literacy in reading music is analogous to literacy in reading in our English language. Can you imagine how much smaller our world would be if we couldn't read?

5) Classical repertoire (songs) utilize the skills and concepts of all the previously mentioned subjects and are the goal of studying music. And by the way, they are really fun to play.

A beginning student will practice all these subjects as part of the daily practice routine. A half hour practice session will ...

About Phillip
I teach music. The guitar, bass guitar, and ukulele just happen to be the particular instruments I choose. Music as a language, discipline, and art, is the goal. I've been teaching, performing, studying, composing, for some thirty years. I've studied and gigged in the classical, jazz, rock, blues, R & B, and country idioms. I've taught composition and improvisation to instruments other than guitar, (vocalists, fiddle, sax, piano, trumpet) I've taught all ages and levels. I currently pursue a doctorate of music in guitar at university. Students learn many things when studying with me. They learn physically how to play a particular instrument while learning music as its own language. Students learn how to learn, learn self-discipline, and access their musical expression, all potential life changing experiences. I am happy and
excited to announce I am available for on-line lessons, and will now be able to work with students from all over the world, regardless of distance or location!

*** Lesson Details ***
I am laid back, but at the same time very goal directed. I like to do technique and/or vocabulary, note reading, and songs every lesson. After six months students are able to to 'jam', (improvise over chord changes such as the blues). They are well on their way to becoming literate, probably a third way through the first book. They probably can play a half dozen songs well, and are starting to strum (comp) chord progressions in a musically rhythmic way. They may even have played in a couple concerts by then.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Office studio w/ guitar, bass, amps, and seating for parents, computer with skype capability.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I bring my guitar and writing tools, extra picks, extra paper etc. Students provide their own instrument, method book, staff paper, notebook paper. Hopefully they have a music stand and their own guitar picks and other items relevant for the study of their instrument.

*** Specialties ***
Classical, jazz, rock, blues, country, bluegrass, theory/composition, improvisation

Time is spent on exercises, learning songs, and personal projects

About Bryan
Bryan is a lifelong student trained in both Contemporary and Classical methodology. Bryan's extensive education paired with his passion for music make him the perfect teacher for any student. Bryan's love for music started at a young age. He began taking private guitar lessons at the age of 10 learning the basics. This knowledge has served as the basis for all of his musical training as it provided a strong backbone of fundamental skills to build upon. Graduating from the University of Oregon in 2005, he practiced and perfected the classical approach to music. Bryan's education continued at the Musicians Institute based in the music capital of the world, Los Angeles. Here he diversified his music skills with vigorous training in the contemporary study of music. This contrast allows Bryan to teach everything from Rock n' Roll to Beethoven!

Bryan Specializes in the guitar and Bass Guitar; however, he is proficient in piano and drums as well. His interests range from simply perfecting the art of guitar playing, to composing modern music for entire bands. Additionally, Bryan's expertise extends into the technological side of recording and producing music. Thorough knowledge of popular computer programs allows Bryan to complete almost any music related task.

Bryan has been teaching private lessons for the past 10 years.

*** Lesson Details ***
I am an incredibly patient teacher with only one goal in mind: help the student progress steadily! For this reason, every students lessons will be different. However, a typical lesson will aim to improve on 4 basic categories... Guitar technique and dexterity, Music Theory / Improvisation, Learning students favorite Songs, and Personal projects. Personal projects can range from writing songs, to recording songs, or to learning the basics of other instruments.

As a lifetime musician I have a very good idea of what works for most students. However, my goal is to be YOUR teacher, and I will focus on whatever it is that interests you the most!

*** Studio Equipment ***
My studio is made up of high quality equipment. It currently includes electric guitars, Acoustic guitars, BASS Guitars, baritone guitars, a piano, Mac computers and a Professional PA system. My name is Ronald S. At the age of 9, I started playing the guitar for my Father's Gospel Group who is a great Gospel D.J. (Big Clyde). Through the years I have taken several guitar courses from several instructors. In the last seven months I have taken instructions from Mr. Christian, I have excelled further and have learned more than all my other adventures.

Micheal's business based environment in an open studio type classroom is a must. In Micheal's unique style of teaching you not only learn to play the guitar, but he also instructs you in song with a spirit of being well satisfied.

As shoppers pass through the store they enjoy the sounds of students playing their guitars following the guidance of Mr. Christian. This also gives his students a chance to perform in front of other people giving them a finer definitions for the art of music. If you are looking for a music instructor, one who focuses in on your difficult areas and searches for improvement to make you the best musician possible in all areas, or if you are just looking to learn and have lots of fun, then Mr. Christian is your contact. Please visit him at one of his jam sessions..

In April of this year, I retained Michael to instruct my 13 year old daughter, Jennifer, in guitar lessons. I was quite impressed with Mr. Michael right from the beginning.

Since I knew nothing about guitars, I had no idea what type of guitar to purchase for Jennifer. Mr. Christian offered on his own time to go with us to help in the purchase of the guitar. He kept in mind what we could afford and the quality of the guitars, it was very reassuring to know that he was looking out for our welfare and to be able trust him.

I am very impressed with the progress Jennifer has made in playing the guitar. She looked forward to her lessons with Mike. She looked forward to her lessons with Mike. He made the lessons interesting and "fun". Mike not only taught her to play the guitar but also how to read music and understand it.

Mike is a very kind, moral, talented young man and I recommend him highly. We are sorry to see him leave, however, our loss is your gain.

I have always wanted to play the guitar but felt too intimidated. A friend told me about TakeLessons and I chose Marcin because he seemed to have a lot of different experiences with music.

Marcin was extremely professional and nice and made me feel at ease. He made it easy to ask questions and explained things really well for me. I took five lessons with him (I've been traveling and haven't been back yet) and was able to play a few songs. What I really like was Marcin's enthusiasm, which, for me, is really encouraging. He was interested in my goals and kept them in mind with each lessons. I could tell that he was preparing each lesson just for me and based on my progress and I felt that I could be honest with what I was doing. Totally recommend Marcin for lesson!

All in all. For me, as a starter. He's a good guitar teacher.

Some press:

Phil's compositions showcase a variety of ideas and are quite effective at setting up the soloists to explore the various permutations suggested by his tunes. His compositional originality is matched by his incisive playing which ranges from "inside" lyricism to hard edged, riff based, screaming rock and satisfying surreal textures aided by his intelligent use of electronics."

Although I'm not technically a student of Phil's, I learn a lot from him every time I play and teach with him. We perform regularly at Berklee, where I'm a professor, and we give concerts and masterclasses all over the Northeast together (most recent was at Cornell). Phil's a warmhearted, patient, brilliant teacher and an outstanding and creative musician, seamlessly putting together everything he knows--jazz, shredding, classical--there's no boundaries for him! He's great at explaining things, and he never belittles a question, no matter how dumb you might have thought it was. In addition to being the most talented guitarist and musician I have ever had the opportunity to play with, Phil is an astoundingly good teacher. I've played guitar for 8 years and taken private lessons the entire time. Phil has been my teacher for the past 2 years and in that time I have progressed as a musician more than I could have ever imagined. Phil has been the biggest factor in my decision to major in music, due to his unrivaled musical talent, his kind, unassuming, (and funny) demeanor and his seemingly limitless knowledge of the fretboard. He is well versed in so many genres of music, and has such an effortless grasp on improvisation. Any guitarist, from immediate beginners to seasoned professionals, can learn so much from Phil. I've been working with Dennis for about 5 years, and who knows, I may be learning from him 5 years from now. It's great learning from him. Not only does he know his stuff and makes his teaching personal to your needs, but he also has a way to make you feel successful even when you are struggling. I always feel better about my playing when I leave than when I got to his studio. He recognizes my learning style and what I want to accomplish, then builds his teaching around that. Dennis a masterful teacher. He has the ability to listen and understand where I am in my learning curve and adjust his lessons to my skill level. When I wanted theory, he went there. When I wanted to learn blues riffs he patiently showed me a few scales. I always leave a session having learned something new.

If you are looking for a guitar teacher (and yes, he also teaches keyboards and other instruments) I'd say put your time and money into Dennis and you, like I, will feel it is one of your best investments
