I have taught guitar since 2012 and have been playing since 2000. I am happy to take students at the beginner and intermediate levels. I believe strongly in integrating music theory and ultimately moving students toward musical self-suffiency, rather than focusing exclusively on learning particular pieces.

Ben has been instructing my 2 kids (now aged 11 and 9) in-home for at least 5 years. We started off with piano for the first few years but then switched to a combination of piano and acoustic guitar (half a session dedicated to each instrument).

He is patient, kind, and highly knowledgeable. I clearly see the upward trajectory in my kids' musical capabilities. One of my kids can be difficult to deal with, especially when he is tired, but Ben would mold his approach to the lesson on the spot to keep my kid engaged (e.g., instead of continuing the lesson on the actual piano, he'd switch to a fun music-oriented game).

I hadn't played a musical instrument since elementary school when I started Ukulele lessons with Ben. Ben started from the beginning, answered all my questions along the way, and built upon that information in each lesson. It wasn't in a didactic way, but in a way that was really customized to fit my Ukulele lesson goals. Ben's teaching style is very flexible also. I had some Ukulele lesson books I had been gifted and we worked from those. I didn't feel that I had to buy a bunch of additional equipment, books, etc.

I recommend Ben as a music teacher. He is understanding, encouraging, and inspirational. I am looking forward to continuing lessons with Ben and JC Instrumental.

Ben has been working with our daughter since January 2019, when she turned 6 1/2. He arrives at our home on time each week and he works with her at an age appropriate level. We appreciate that he recognizes the effort she puts into the weeks when she practices often and he gently makes her aware when she hasn't practiced enough. He always speaks with her in a kind way and with us in a collaborative manner. We all want her to enjoy her piano experience, and we are thankful to have found Ben just a few blocks away from our home.

I am a technique-focused teacher insofar as making sure any student of mine is avoiding bad and sometimes unhealthy habits in their playing. I do, however, try to find fun ways to work on technique, with the end goal being playing repertoire that is fun for the student. I believe technical exercises have their place in learning any instrument, but that it's important to spend the majority of your practice time on material which is ultimately enjoyable to play.

I do have certain sets of books I like to follow depending on the student's interests, but I am always happy to tweak the lesson plan to fit the student's needs.

About Joshua

Hi there! My name is Josh, and I'd love to be your guitar teacher! I've been playing guitar since I was eight, starting out playing rock and roll, then focusing on classical training for my college career. In both undergraduate and graduate school, I studied classical composition as a classical gui

My son Jake wanted to learn some Boston songs that my husband always plays, and Josh was the perfect teacher for him! Jake had been playing 2 years when we found Josh. I was impressed by his ability to make stuff like technique and scales fun for students. Highly recommend!
Scott
My middle son took an interest in classical guitar and Josh was perfect to get him going. We bought the books recommended by Josh which gave my son the basics. Josh follows the pace of the student and was flexible when teaching from books.
Julie
I wanted to learn more than just the basic chords and Josh was a great teacher! He explains things in a way that's easy to understand. I took guitar lessons when I was little and he helped me to build on what I already knew. He also encouraged me to pick songs I wanted to learn rather than stick to a book. Scheduling was easy and he's really responsive to messages.

"Ahmad is great. I started with him in November last year and have been seeing him weekly since. He's that perfect blend of very, very smart about guitar+music, but down to earth in his style and methodology. He's also a great guy and makes lessons fun. I discovered Ahmad from the Internet then found out that a close friend had learned guitar from him a couple of years ago. She raves about him. Bottom-line: if you're looking for quality guitar instruction from a genuine and very capable teacher you can't do better than Ahmad."

"Cory is a fantastic instructor. Having previously taken violin lessons with very impatient instructors, I was anxious that classical guitar lessons would be the same since I had no experience. But Cory is not only patient, willing to repeat concepts and move a pace that best suits you, but also kind and genuinely enthusiastic about your progress with the instrument. I would highly recommend him as a teacher."

"My son Tyler has been taking classical guitar lessons with Raymond for several months now and we can happily say that we have found the best guitar teacher for Tyler. Tyler has taken guitar lessons with several instructors before but Raymond's approach is very different. He is very attentive to how Tyler plays and corrects it as necessary. Tyler has improved so much. He even memorizes his music sheets and plays anytime, anywhere I ask him to. We are very happy with the results. Highly recommended Raymond for a classical guitar teacher!"
