I am a Musician by profession and has been teaching Ear Training and Music Theory to students in a Lower Elementary and Middle School level. Here, you will learn to use solfege to help you internalize the music you hear and then easily transpose melodies to different keys. Learn to hear melody and then write it down. Develop your memory for melodies and rhythms. Listening is the most important skill in music.

Learn ear training from a guitarists perspective! I can work with you to learn your favorite songs by ear!
Intermediate/advanced: we can delve into formal ear training lessons tailored to your needs (hearing chords, intervals, modes)
I help students make the guitar a part of their life, teaching them to play with individuality, creativity, and proper technique.
***for DC In-home students, minimum lesson time must be 60 minutes.***
Taught privately in the Washington DC area for 3 years before moving to NYC to earn my Bachelors of Fine Arts in Music majoring in Jazz Guitar. I have accumulated more than 10 years of experience teaching the guitar. I gigged regularly in the DMV and NYC areas and have been doing a lot of shows, private parties, receptions, weddings, and business events. i have made recordings in studios and I am very musically active. I am extremely passionate, and I live to play, learn, and of course teach the guitar.
*** Lesson Details and Teaching Philosophy *** I love playing guitar and YOU will too!
The guitar is a fantastic instrument
and is so much fun to play. I incorporate musical fun into my lesson as much as I can because I want students to learn how to "play" music not "work" music. I have learned from many great musicians that music is driven by passion and should be enjoyable to the performer and this is felt by the audience. Teaching and learning are similar. I enjoy teaching so much and my students always have a smile on their face after the lesson.
Play the music YOU love!
I have learned in my experience that students show the most growth and progress while learning material that they are interested in. I have been trained to be able to play almost any tune I hear, so I can teach my students how to play their favorite tunes exactly how they hear them!
This means that lessons are customized and fine-tuned for every student!
Slow and steady WINS the race!
Learning music is not a race, but this lesson is true when learning music. I am able to work with students to help them improve by identifying and isolating problems in their playing. I can create simple exercises for the student to slowly and surely become closer to the guitarist they wish to be.
I am very flexible and prioritize the students need over everything else. But with everything I teach, I am able to relate back to theory. I show students how to practice effectively to build their chops. And I of course I can instruct the students how to read and write music, with proper technique. I also have an educated background with Theory and Ear Training, all of which I pass on to all my students.
I care very much about my students and love to see them excel!
*** Studio Equipment *** music studio in basement; amps; guitars (acoustic & electric); cables, music stands, sheet music
*** Travel Equipment *** I can provide with me sheet music paper, a music stand, and a small amplifier if necessary.

Marvin is an excellent instructor who works with your skill level and customizes teaching accordingly. He also gives homework to your range and tips depending on your schedule. Goal is to have fun, learn, and one of your favorite songs.

Marvin has been a wonderful instructor. Patient yet sets high expectations for us, which pushes us to meet those expectations. In just a few lessons I can already see a lot of improvement. He's professional and reliable, and a pleasure to work with. We've very much enjoyed taking lessons with him.

Marvin has taught guitar to my 2 sons for 4 years. Marvin is very easy going and has a relaxed and fun approach to teaching. My boys enjoy learning from Marvin. I would definitely recommend him to anyone looking for a guitar teacher.

Some of his students have also gone on to pursue careers in music, others have just learned as a hobby, and some have been somewhere in between the two. All are welcome!
*** Studio Equipment *** Lessons in living room with couches, chairs, cables/amps, as well as extra guitars (acoustic and electric) and a bass guitar, if needed.
*** Travel Equipment *** I can provide amps and stands, etc if needs be. However, if they are already provided for the student's sake/in terms of the student (i.e. I'll bring the equipment needed for myself), this would be ideal.
*** Specialties *** Pop, rock, jazz, blues, classical, metal and funk.
I had to switch the lesson to in-home roughly 3 hours before the scheduled lesson. David was great and accommodating. He gave me a crash course on scales, which I didn't know anything about, and explained them so that I actually started to understand.
March 10, 2017
My first lesson with David was excellent! He is very patient and knowledgeable. I now have extremely high expectations for learning to play the guitar. I highly recommend him. He gave me a thorough explanation about how guitars are made made, the parts, we tuned the guitar and I am ready to groove!

Feeling very confidant with my choice in instructor!
Consists of learning to sight read, hearing intervals, melodic dictation, rhythmic dictation, and harmonic dictation. Students will learn to hear melodies, harmonies, chords, and rhythms then write them down without the help of the piano. Students will be able to read music without the help of any musical instrument. Specially helpful for those students hoping to go to college for music as it is a required class in order to graduate.
My name is Jennifer. I got my degree in vocal performance and minored in Jazz. I began voice lessons myself when I was eight. I am a mezzo soprano, and can teach both female and male voices. I have performed in several opera productions including but not limited to The Marriage of Figaro, Dido and Aeneus, Tenderland, and Hand of Bridge. I have worked and performed in masterworks by Brahms, Chopin, Mozart to name a few. I studied in French, English, Spanish, Italian, and German. I studied diction, ear training, piano, music history, pedagogy, and music theory. I have also performed with artists such as New York Voices, Bobby Mcferrin and Kurt Elling. I was blessed with many learning opportunities to grow in my passion and I would love to pass that knowledge and passion to anyone who wants to learn.
*** Lesson Details *** Lessons are de
signed around the needs of each student. The first lessons is always spent testing range, knowledge and abilities already known by the student. Then the student weighs in on what kind of music they would like to learn and what they hope to gain from the lessons. Theory and ear training are incorporated into the lessons. We work on breathing, technique and style. Generally we start with English or Italian. We work on vocal performance from a classical standpoint but Jazz and Broadway can also be taught if desired by the student. Scales and exercises are given each week to be worked on until the next lesson. A recording device is encouraged if the student cannot play the piano. Also, a voice note book to take notes during the lesson to be used during practice during the week.
Omg seriously best vocal teacher ever!!! After my first lesson I had already started seeing improvements!! If you want to strengthen your vocals, Ms. Jenn is definitely the person for you!! Absolutely love going to lessons! I will not be stopping anytime soon!
August 2, 2019
Jen was really nice, put me at ease right away!! I'm looking forward to my next lesson!
May 23, 2019
Hannah is really enjoying her lessons and is always letting me know how much she is learning. I hear her practicing every night. Jennifer is professional, very experienced and wonderful to work with
Beginning ear training begins with pitch recognition. From there, we work through recognizing patterns, chord qualities, and sight-singing. More advanced students can expect to work on melodic and harmonic dictations.
Each session is tailored to the student's specific needs. We will move at his/her pace.

Sang in choirs for more than 10 years. Experienced at playing guitar and piano by ear, and learning songs by listening as well as reading written music. Experienced at teaching how to apply music theory and ear training exercises to learning songs. Have taught improvisation and ear training to various instrumentalists, including guitar, flute, violin, cello, and clarinet.
I played on a toy piano when I was very young, learning a bit of sight reading from my Mother, while listening to classical, jazz, and rock music. When I was 12, I learned guitar and later took private piano lessons from a prominent Philadelphia instructor. After playing in a rock band in high school, I went to college and received my degree in Physics. During this time, I joined a choir, and sang and played guitar in a contemporary vocal group where I became the lead guitarist and vocal arranger, and later became the director. I also played guitar in my church, as well as in a small folk group, performing music of the Beatles, Bacharach, Crosby, Stills, and Nash, and many others. I also played or sung in a number of weddings during my college days.
Upon graduation, I moved to the DC area to work in the engineering field, while s
imultaneously pursuing my music ambition. I studied classical guitar at American University with a student of the great Andres Segovia, and also studied jazz guitar with a former student of a prominent jazz guitarist, Pat Martino. Additionally, I sang in choirs and studied composition privately with a prominent Washington area composer and performer from Catholic University, I also began to teach at an area performing arts academy.
My most long-term experiences in music have been serving in my local church for over 30 years, either playing guitar (acoustic, electric, bass), piano, or arranging vocals in a contemporary worship band. I also started a church choir, and led both choir and small orchestra in a number of special performances. Additionally, I led congregational worship in different scenarios. During this time I also taught students of all ages guitar, piano, and music theory, and have continued to today in helping students to find their musical potential and pursue their musical ambitions.
I have recently retired from my engineering career so I can use my musical gifts in my local church and teach music as a second career. I have completed my second degree at George Mason University, and continue to play with other musicians there. More importantly, I continue to learn how to better teach others of all ages how to grow in all aspects of music-making.
*** Lesson Details *** Having taught for many years, my approach is flexible and I can adjust my teaching style and/or curriculum to maximize the student's potential for learning at any age. I encourage disciplined practice while working to make learning music an enjoyable experience. Although I specialize in guitar styles, I also teach piano, and can include music theory, sight reading, composition, and how to improvise on any instrument. I have taught improvisation on a number of different instruments such as violin, cello, flute, and clarinet.
Here are some testimonials from present or former students/parents:
"Mr. S. is very earnest; when he gives you a compliment, you can tell he really means it. He's very patient and experienced and skilled and he is willing to take what he's teaching down to my level to help me understand it." Gregory K., age 10 Geoff is a patient and encouraging instructor. He tailored my lessons towards the skills that I needed. He provides the necessary encouragement when the long hours of practice seem impossible to sustain. I could write a book about Geoff's credentials: highly qualified is an understatement. -- Neal B. Mr. S. is awesome at playing and teaching guitar, and he is nice and helps you. -- Michael B., age 12 I'm sure I could learn to Play Guitar Today using books and videos, but I think I'm on the right track with private one-on-one instruction. Linda H. The guitar lessons are fun, interactive, and instructive. A great way to make learning a delight! Gina R., parent

I'm very familiar with 60's music (e.g., Beatles) I've performed a lot of folk music, rock music, and classical music I've played classical guitar and in classical and jazz ensembles at weddings and other special events.
I totally enjoyed my class with Geoff. We immediately started my lesson with tuning the ukulele. Then we went over the cords and strumming. I have been researching on playing the ukulele and his explanation on the strumming was a lot better than the book. He is teaching me how to play by listening to the notes which is great because I would be able to play the Hawaiian music for my hula classes. In addition, his studio is only a 5 minute drive from my house, which means I don’t have to deal with traffic.

great understanding of what I know and how to improve! Experienced instructor
January 17, 2018
Geoff is great! Really knows what he’s doing. I’ve learned a lot in the three weeks that I’ve been working with him.
I have been in several situations that required that I catch on quickly and have been able to pull off a successful performance virtually every time. I will share with you some of the secrets to accomplishing this over and over again.
This International guitarist is now offering in-person and online coaching sessions. With more than thirty years of experience, he has performed with many well-known artists including grammy-nominated celebrities and others such as Freddie Jackson, Regina Belle, EU, Angela Bofill, Alyson Williams, Mya, Syleena Johnson, Marion Meadows, Nick Colionne, Mike Phillips, Michael Lington, Bobby Lyle, Marcus Johnson, Bob Baldwin, Pamela Williams, Carolyn Malachi and more.
I can't say enough good things about Earl's instruction. He's extremely knowledgeable and talented and yet responsive, inspiring, and kind. Rather than applying a narrow and rigid approach to teaching, lessons are built around my abilities and interests and he has taught me new ways of looking at music and playing guitar. I feel very fortunate to be one of his students.
To be fluent in the language of music, Ear Training is key! This is not only about listening well but fully comprehending and then coding what is heard. Including this process in any music study, accelerates growth and helps establish full music competency.
A graduate of Duke Ellington School for the Arts and the prestigious Berklee College of Music, Rachel Panay is a 6 time Billboard Club charting singer/songwriter in the Dance music genre. She recently returned to her musical theatre roots appearing as Rose in Theatre Lab's production of The Secret Garden. Rachel is also a Wolftrap resident teaching artist in DC schools and has been commissioned by Wolftrap to create and perform her original children's performance piece, Jazz Cat/Blues Kitty.
As teacher, Rachel is warm, friendly & energetic. Her passion for every facet of music is expressed in her desire to impart that same appreciation to her students. She tailors lessons according to the individual student's goals and interests.
With younger students, Rachel communicates regularly with parents so they can work together to
Rachel knows her stuff but I felt like she was rushing our lessons or cutting them short for the next student. The lessons were also generic and all we did was warm-ups. She'd promise we'd get to the song next time but we never got through the entire thing after five lessons and there was no progression.

Piano lessons with Rachel were a gift from a friend and it has been one of the best gifts I’ve ever received. From day one I knew I had the right teacher because of how she responded to all of my questions of “why”. She appreciates and feeds off of my curiosity which in turn nourishes and excites me. She explains the theory and why music works the way it does. We’ve even dabbled into voice a bit. Continuing piano lessons with her has been the best thing I’ve done this year and I’m looking forward to many more lessons.

Rachel is an outstanding piano teacher -- especially for adult students.
As an exceptional teacher, she knows exactly how to motivate a student by making the subject both fun and rewarding. She knows music theory so extensively that her lessons are more than simply about playing keys on the piano. My understanding of the piano is so much richer because she presents every lesson in the context of theory.
Rachel is particularly adept in tailoring a piano program around the student's interests and learning style. This has made the lessons fun as I quickly learned to play songs that interest me.
I would recommend Rachel for any student -- young or mature -- who is interested in learning to play the piano as a lifetime skill.
"Stephanie is an amazing teacher! She has helped me so much with basic ear training! I was worried about learning basic ear training online but her method
is great and I have made so my progress in a short amount of time spent with her already! I highly recommend her for lessons!"
"Fawn is great. She's reliable, punctual, smart, patient and great training me and my daughter how to sing on pitch. I can tell you that before Fawn, my da
ughter had 3 other vocal coaches and she was frustrated with little or no improvement. Once Fawn came into the picture, that all changed after the very first lesson! My daughter came home last night beaming because she got the LEAD, yes, the LEAD in her school musical. Something that has never happened and would have never happened without Fawn. We are sticking with her. I can't wait to see and hear my daughter and myself continually improve and become the best version we can of ourselves."
"I have known Carlos for more than 30 years. He’s always been a real mentor, and a leader for all his students. Carlos is an Innovator and creator of c
utting edge learning programs, he has taught thousands of successful students and has many years of experience as a music educator."
"If you are aurally challenged when it comes to intervals and harmonic progressions, I definitely recommend tutoring. Michelle was very patient during our
lessons and had different tips on how to identify certain progressions, which I appreciated. We also worked on complex rhythms together. It was actually really fun. She's very kind, resourceful, and an excellent tutor."
"Ms. Jackson is a dynamic teacher whose energy elevates my soul!"
"Rachel is great! So happy to be taking lessons and hearing differences in my voice already!"
"I have known Professor Carlos Campos for more than few years since he was teaching at Shepherd University and I was doing my Masters in Film Scoring. Prof
essor Campos is an excellent musician and educator who has always been willing to share his knowledge of musicianship, composition, ear training, jazz harmony, and piano. I hope that you give Professor Campos an opportunity to share his knowledge with you. He really cares about his students."
"Randy, I like your "Semper Method of Music” teaching method. It's applying knowledge with fun, and common sense... the best combination. Good luck. You’
re a great musician. Joe Messina Motown recording guitarist & Funk Brother"
"She's a really patient teacher, and she helped me a lot. After the lesson with her, I analyzed how to listen to the bass line quickly. She also taught me
a lot short hands for ear training. I hope I could take her lesson again."
