About Kevin
I truly enjoy teaching. I've taught in the public school classroom for 11 years. Teaching music is so so much FUN! And it should be fun for the students to learn. When I'm teaching I tell all my students that if they don't enjoy and smile about something, then we need to change something.

I'm Lucas, a professional drummer and educator in Chicago. I'm passionate about playing music and am so grateful that I get to make a living doing what I love. I played drum set with Blue Man Group, I regularly perform at the top jazz clubs in Chicago, and I've toured the country with indie bands. I'm also a high school percussion ensemble director and college drum set teacher, so I have a broad range of experiences to pull from as I craft a customized plan to help you meet your drumming goals.
I started playing the drums in my hometown of Tucson, AZ at 9 years old, following in my mom’s footsteps, who played drums at my church. It wasn’t long before I started playing in punk bands, jazz groups, and youth orchestras. I moved to the Midwest to study music at Northern Illinois University, and eventually went on to earn a master's degree at DePaul University. The Chicago music scene has provided me countless opportunities to play with inspiring musicians over the years, and I'm always

I have 17 years experience performing drum set, hand drums, mallets and many other percussion instruments. I received a Bachelor's in Music for Percussion Performance and Music Education from the Sacramento State School of Music and I received my Master's in Music for Percussion Performance from the University of Nevada, Reno. I have experience teaching in public schools (high school and middle school levels), the collegiate level, music camps, and I have maintained a private studio for over two years. I have a method of teaching based on what you want to learn while also going over technique, posture, musicianship and music theory. My teaching is based entirely on the student as many people have different ways of learning so I do my best to make myself clear. My goal is to make lessons fun and informative, so let's enjoy the journey of making music!

Hello, my name is Christian and thank you for checking out my page! I look forward to working with you on your journey to becoming a better drummer!
I'm an easy-going and passionate educator who truly enjoys welcoming others to the world of drumming. I love helping students like you become better players as you deepen your love of music and feel great about yourself in the process.
I devote time to helping you develop a strong foundation of fundamentals while also guiding you as you immerse yourself into your passions. Simply, I can teach you how to learn and appreciate music - a skill that can be applied to all areas of your life.
I believe that we can be complete musicians, not JUST drummers, so I like to involve music making into all we do in our time together. I’m also a constant learner, so if you want to learn something that I don't know, then we can explore it together and I'll teach you my process for educating myself.
If you have other musical interests, like ...

I strongly recommend Christian Johnson for any type of percussion teaching.
Chris was able to get me caught up to the other drummers within a couple months. I was finally able to read sheet music fluently and began to be assigned more advanced parts to play in the school band. Each week Chris gave me homework assignments such as working on different rudiments or reading and playing different types of percussion sheet music (bells, xylophone, etc). My lessons with a Chris paid off over the years, as I was able to join the high school marching band as a middle schooler and went on to win accolades for my drumming in the school plays. Everything I learned and accomplished most definitely stemmed from my lessons with Chris!

iI've been taking classes with Rafael Leal for six months. During these six months there has been a lot of progress with the knowledge of music theory and my drums skills. There are a lot of music teachers out there, but Rafael's combination of knowledge and skills can not only craft you into a great drummer, but a great musician as well!I highly recommend you contact Rafael leal and pursue taking your music education to a new level."

His teaching style is creative and interesting in terms of what material he brings and how he incorporates it into what you're working on, he communicates in a way that I find easy to understand, and scheduling and communication outside of the lesson has been a breeze. Our online lessons have been surprisingly easy (as someone new to this way of learning)--Evan's set up is easy to see and hear and feel like you're talking to a human being, and having the lesson recorded and sent over has been hugely helpful for reviewing the material.
Evan also happens to be in my opinion the most creative, interesting, and musical drummer in the city of Seattle, at least that I know of. Highly recommend!"

Popular Drum Articles from our Blog
If you're like most drummers, you have one hand that doesn't always like to cooperate. And for some, the frustration that ensues makes it much easier to just ignore the problem and favor the dominant hand. Over time, while the stronger hand gets better control and technique, the weaker hand just gets... well, weaker and weaker. But just like switch hitters are invaluable players on a baseball team, learning how to build strength in your weaker hand can make you a much more efficient drummer. …
