Ear Training:
A great technique for those who have never trained their ear and want to learn to be on pitch, to those who have good ears, but want to learn to sing notes that are written on the staff, ear training can be fun. I always start out with the basics and only progress as the student feels comfortable, learning and matching notes and rhythms.

About Karen

Hi! My name is Karen D. I’ve had the pleasure of performing, singing, writing, and recording since I was seven years old. Besides being an Honor Graduate of Berklee School of Music, I have been a lifelong student of the international world-renowned instructors Dante Pavone and Charlie Banacos.

Extremely knowledgeable! Karen is a superb guitar instructor. Honestly, I was struggling. Discouraged! She helped me understand my strengths and weaknesses, and moved me from beginner to intermediate in a matter of months. If you’re getting tired of learning from YouTube and smart phone apps, let Karen kick start your guitar playing. You’ll be glad you did. Thanks Karen!!

Karen was great!

This teacher misrepresented her ability to teach the C system chromatic button accordion. I don't believe that she has ever played one. I asked her before purchasing a set of classes if she knew this instrument and was competent to teach it, and she said she was.

She didn't have one, so she could never demonstrate anything I asked about. She didn't know the key layout. She didn't know the conventions for numbering fingers. She didn't know the basic home key scale pattern.

I waited until I'd finished four classes with my new teacher before writing this so I'd have a good basis for comparison. He is immensely better at teaching this than she was. It further convinced me that she never should have represented herself as competent to teach this particular instrument.

Dan has been an amazing help through my vocal journey. He's been working with me for 2 months now and he's taught me how to gain better control of my voice and be more thoughtful of my placement and breath support. His session have been a good mix of fun and supportive but also challenging. He continues to be a great vocal trainer to work with.

I have been fortunate enough to take lessons with Dan for over a year now. Taking lessons with him has been an absolute game changer. He is very focused during class and is incredibly patient. He takes notes during each class so he knows exactly what songs I'm working on, which parts of my range need work, how my range has changed, etc. I highly recommend his vocal coaching.

Developing our ears is a crucial part of nurturing our musicianship. Having the ability to hear specific aspects of music allows us to strengthen our understand and appreciation of music.

Like my trombone lessons, ear training lessons will start by solidifying (or reviewing) fundamentals. Once established, we will build upon those fundamental skills to further develop our musical ear.

He recognized what I needed to improve upon in order to reach my goals in a timely manner, armed me with the tools to do so, and I have no doubt that I will achieve those goals as the lessons progress.

Dr. C has the unique ability to make his lessons fun and profound. As someone who didn’t have a formal classical music background, he has consistently encouraged me and has intensified my creativity and curiosity by exposing me to music and ideas that are now indispensable to me. He is passionate, funny, witty, and undoubtedly the most valuable instructor I’ve ever had.
Dr. Daniel Plante
Dr. C. is a longtime trusted colleague with a sterling resume and excellent reputation among his students at both Queens College and Mannes College. Having taught a good number of his former students, I can attest to both the preparation they received from him but their respect and admiration they hold. Much Recommended.

Dr. Eric C. is one of the most influential people in my life, and I have the honor of being coached by him. His attention to detail, intuition as a coach, and professor is truly one that is unmatched. He has the ability to show you something in a different light, which opens
up doors for you that you didn't know existed before. With his guidance, compassion, complete joy of this art form, and incredible knowledge, I was able to perform very difficult pieces. He always works diligently,
to ensure that no stone is left unturned, and every detail of the music is conveyed in how it is intended.

Any questions I have are always met with the utmost clarity. I appreciate greatly that he takes the time to ensure I understand the “why" of what I'm learning. He has a remarkable way knowing how to break
things down in a way that I always remember and am able to process, which has helped me immensely. My knowledge and understanding is always
expanding because of him. During my undergrad at the Aaron Copland School of Music, he was my theory and ear training professor. He goes above and beyond for all of his students and will always make sure that
they understand every detail in what they are learning. Any fears I ever had in learning the "challenging" concepts of music have been taken away
because of him, and now I welcome the challenges that come my way.

He has taught me how to truly listen to music, and dive into the depths of it, which in turn has given me an appreciation of this art form that can only be explained as transcendent. No matter how much knowledge I
acquire on my path as a musician, I will forever be in total awe of this art form. My gratitude for him is immense. "Before anything, you are a
musician first."-Dr. C.

"I brought my son to Randy two years ago to see if he would be a good fit as an instructor.

I had always wanted to learn to play the piano myself, but thought that because I never learned (and probably never would), I would make sure my son learned how!

My son is not only well on his way to learning to play the piano by by ear, he is also having a blast recording his own music! Randy always emails out a recap of the lesson along with things to work on for the upcoming week. I love these recaps because I can listen to the music they recorded and know what my son should be working on. It's great!

I always remembered hearing about what learning to play an instrument was like when I was younger (probably why I never tried to learn), an old blue hair wapping your hand with a ruler when you did not practice enough.

This is not what it is like at all with Randy. Lessons can be as engaging as you want them to be. Randy has a special talent to know what to focus on every week based on how his student is feeling.

I know this because I have witnessed several lessons where my son has been a real bundle of energy bouncing off the walls and Randy was able to reel him in and make progress for the day!

I have enjoyed watching my son grow as a musician so much , that I started taking lessons from Randy about a year ago. My favorite part about the process is I told Randy up front that I wanted to play November Rain by Guns -n- Roses, (no easy task). He did not tell me that it was an impossible, or that it was a bad idea... He just drew the sheet music and we got after it. It has been awesome learning my favorite song along and at the same time learning how to play the piano by ear.

You will begin to listen to all music differently after spending time with Randy, that is a fact.

I have always been a lover of music, but it goes to the next level when you start to gain an understanding and a feeling of how the music is put together.

I know that Randy is able to look down the road with each student and know how exactly how to teach each individual because everyone responds differently.

Randy really does a terrific job making sure you know that it is not IF you will reach your goals, but WHEN.

I am confident that we will be his students as long as he will have us, and I highly recommend you give him a try! You won't be disappointed!"

"Can't say enough about Yoon. He is not a mere teacher, but a mentor of sorts. Not only does he know his stuff, but what he teaches can be applied to other areas of life. He goes above and beyond the material. Teaching you not just about music, but how to learn more efficiently and how to build yourself up. Here I was, late to the music game, playing catch-up. In a couple of months, I have made massive improvements to my rhythm and intonation. More than that, Yoon instills a drop more of confidence in me every single lesson and that is invaluable. I would recommend him to anyone who is serious about getting right kind of instruction!"

He took a very personalized approach with my ear training, developing a solid idea of my strengths and weaknesses before honing in on specific issues. "Aaron has an ability to make difficult things interesting and fun. While I was at the University of Oregon, Aaron provided me private instruction for what was one of the most disliked classes amongst the undergrads. Aaron turned what used to be something that I would dread into something that was entertaining and effective. He would come with real world examples and allegories regarding music theory and composition to apply context to whatever it was we were studying. Despite my apparent deficiencies in ear training, he was not only incredibly patient but also very effective in helping me overcome my challenges and earn a passing grade."
