I've been making a living primarily off my ears for a decade! Being a freelance saxophonist most professional gigs I take I have to learn everything by ear, and be expected to roll with the changes on stage as I hear them.
Now I don't have perfect pitch, far from it! But with my approach to ear training and musical theory you can shape your ear into a powerful instrument to help you know exactly where you are and what you're hearing, and what you're going to hear! With just a little dedication and practice you too can have control over your ears. So lets get started today!
About Phillip
Since 2011 I've been a full-time professional saxophonist, composer, and studio musician based out of New Orleans. Since moving to the city I've played literally thousands of gigs with dozens of bands ranging from Swamp Pop and Funk to Jazz and Blues, and have toured both the East and West coasts.

If you think you are tone deaf, unless a doctor has diagnosed you as such, think again! Listening and hearing tones and being able to reproduce them is simply a matter of skill, built by accurate repetition. In our first lesson, we will discuss your goals for ear training and where you would like to apply your skills, be it at guitar, piano, or simply being able to sing in public without being shy! You will leave your first lesson with a handful of simple exercises to begin your daily work, and by the end of your first package of lessons, you will be able to sing or play simple songs by ear!
Students describe me as patient, fun, and encouraging! I work with Alfred's Complete Music Theory curriculum, along with the solfege system to help you develop an ear for hearing intervals and chord qualities, on up to complete chord progressions and inversions! We will work towards what YOU want to learn. *Please check my availability before signing up, as my time slots are quickly filling ...

I had always wanted to learn to play the piano myself, but thought that because I never learned (and probably never would), I would make sure my son learned how!
My son is not only well on his way to learning to play the piano by by ear, he is also having a blast recording his own music! Randy always emails out a recap of the lesson along with things to work on for the upcoming week. I love these recaps because I can listen to the music they recorded and know what my son should be working on. It's great!
I always remembered hearing about what learning to play an instrument was like when I was younger (probably why I never tried to learn), an old blue hair wapping your hand with a ruler when you did not practice enough.
This is not what it is like at all with Randy. Lessons can be as engaging as you want them to be. Randy has a special talent to know what to focus on every week based on how his student is feeling.
I know this because I have witnessed several lessons where my son has been a real bundle of energy bouncing off the walls and Randy was able to reel him in and make progress for the day!
I have enjoyed watching my son grow as a musician so much , that I started taking lessons from Randy about a year ago. My favorite part about the process is I told Randy up front that I wanted to play November Rain by Guns -n- Roses, (no easy task). He did not tell me that it was an impossible, or that it was a bad idea... He just drew the sheet music and we got after it. It has been awesome learning my favorite song along and at the same time learning how to play the piano by ear.
You will begin to listen to all music differently after spending time with Randy, that is a fact.
I have always been a lover of music, but it goes to the next level when you start to gain an understanding and a feeling of how the music is put together.
I know that Randy is able to look down the road with each student and know how exactly how to teach each individual because everyone responds differently.
Randy really does a terrific job making sure you know that it is not IF you will reach your goals, but WHEN.
I am confident that we will be his students as long as he will have us, and I highly recommend you give him a try! You won't be disappointed!"
